A
t this time when nobody knows what to expect from anything, it's inspiring to see so many people and organisations showing energy and optimism. So there are lots of things going on in London, whether we're experiencing them on our screens or in real life. But since we are spending so much time on our screens at home, it's apt that our focus this month is on homes and interiors. Our special Home section includes more than 70 pages of ideas and inspiration for the home, spanning improvements to make yourself as well as major building projects to consider. We look at everything from paint colour trends and sleep-enabling bedroom decor to loft conversions and home offices, via lighting ideas and wardrobe solutions. So with a long winter ahead of us, now's the time to transform our homes into the havens we all need. Because whether it's a new lamp or a kitchen extension, an update to your space can make all the difference. Enjoy October.

Rite of PASSAGE Absolutely previews a new exhibition of Leila Alaoui’s work at Somerset House By ABBIE SCHOFIELD
T
hree young Moroccan men wait patiently at the waterfront, amongst the ruins of buildings. They are pensive, dreaming of starting a new life across the barrier of the sea. Having sacrificed their old lives and relationships in hopes of a better future in Europe, they are now stuck on their journey. They can’t move forward, but they can’t turn back. This powerful photograph was taken by French-Moroccan photographer Leila Alaoui in 2008 as part of her series No Pasara, meaning Entry Denied. Alaoui was known for capturing the struggles of those displaced by conflict, providing insight into their rich cultures and individual worlds, from refugees to migrant workers. In 2016, Alaoui was injured in a terrorist attack while working on a photography project in Burkina Faso and died shortly afterwards. She was 33. No Pasara is one of three collections on display at Somerset House this season in collaboration with 1-54 Contemporary African Art fair, the first major retrospective exhibition of Alaoui’s work in the UK. Natreen (We Wait) was commissioned by the Danish Refugee Council and shows Syrian refugees fleeing the war in Lebanon. Alaoui captures their strength, resilience and beauty, a challenge to stereotypical media portrayals of refugees and immigrants. L’Île du Diable (Devil’s Island) is a work of film combining testimonials, sounds, videos and photographs depicting a generation of migrant workers who moved to Europe after World War II. They were displaced from their homes while working for an automobile factory in France, and Alaoui explores the impact of this on future generations. Alaoui’s photographs attempt to

show historically misunderstood and misrepresented groups in a new light, whether through a celebration of traditional clothing or showing their pain via raw and moving portraits. She spent time getting to know her subjects, and these personal relationships add a level of profound intimacy to her work. Alaoui lifts the voices and faces of those forgotten during conflict. TASTING NOTES
London’s food news and most exciting openings this month By ABBIE SCHOFIELD
By BERRY BROS. & RUDD
Berry Bros. & Rudd Cremant de Limoux by Antech £13.95 A blend of 70% Chardonnay and 15% each of Chenin Blanc and Mauzac, this is a beautiful, balanced wine with elegant aromas of orchard fruit and honeyed spice. The palate marries more exotic fruits with a clean, pebbly backdrop.
2018 Château Fontarèche, Blanc, Pays d'Oc £9.95 Fontarèche is one of the oldest vineyards of the Languedoc, with some of the plantings dating back as far as 1350. In 1682, the Mignard family purchased Château Fontarèche and today, nine generations on, the Lamy family own and run the estate.
2016 Ronan by Clinet, Pur'Cab, Bordeaux £14.50 Only made in tiny quantities, the 2016 Pur’Cab gives a profound nose of cassis, cocoa, blackcurrant leaf and plum. The palate is textured and savoury, while the tannins are evident but beautifully rounded – a hallmark of the excellent vintage. BERRY BROS. & RUDD Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant, having traded from the same shop since 1698. Today the company also has offices in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, a Wine School and an exclusive fine wine and dining venue in St James's.

When it comes to high-quality craftsmanship, Japana knives are a cut above the rest
By EVE HERBERT
J SAKAI KYUBA SET
apana celebrates Japanese craftsmanship and minimalist aesthetics. Since its beginnings in early 2016, the company has gone from selling handmade Japanese knives to a whole range of kitchenware such as knife racks, porcelain dinner plates and cutting boards. It began when Kamila Hankiewicz was trying to find a quality, affordable Japanese knife as a Christmas gift for her boyfriend. After no luck, she decided to contact a Japanese blacksmith herself and had the knife custom made. They both instantly fell in love with the product. Wanting more people to experience the joy of using it, Kamila set up Japana with her high school friend Anna. They had to overcome many challenges when dealing with the male-dominated, conservative and patriarchal business system of Japanese blacksmiths. However, their love and passion for Japanese craftsmanship prevailed.
Today, Japana is based in London with an international customer base. Its mission is to bring high-quality Japanese kitchen knives and accessories to homes worldwide. As a sustainable company, Japana's products are made to last with no massproduction or ready-made components, only true craftsmanship. Japana believes less is more – more space, time and peace of mind – and all of their products embody this philosophy. The team personally oversee the end-to-end crafting process to make sure their knives serve you and your family for generations. Japana only works with artisans who pride themselves on vigilance and respect for their craft, which no machine can replicate. For instance, each blade is forged and hand-polished in Japan by master swordsmen whose techniques have been perfected by their families over centuries. Japana's signature range, Sakai Kyuba, is forged with the highest quality V10 46-layer Damascus hammered stainless steel, and is beaten, shaped and polish by hand. By using the same techniques that were used to make katanas (Samurai weapons) thousands of years ago, the knife is sturdier and sharper than anything you will have experienced. Each handle is unique and made with rare European maple burl dyed in green, blue and brown which is dried for two years before assembling. When you buy a Japana knife, you are getting a beautiful piece of art with an extraordinary history. JA PA N A Shop online at japanahome.com

larke’s has been in Kensington Church Street for 35 years, but it still feels fresh. Sally Clarke and her team worked throughout lockdown to revamp the interior, which has a stylish, suitably feminine feel with carefully chosen paint colours in shades of olive and sage. It’s a popular place, busy with a local crowd on our midweek visit, and despite restrictions on diner numbers and extra space between tables, it all feels very normal. It’s lovely to be greeted by Sally herself, who shows us to our table and chats proudly about her team’s
dedicated work. Armed with white peach Bellinis and some of Clarke’s famed sourdough, we embark on the impressive menu. It’s littered with unusual ingredients – summer truffle, girolles, cob nuts, deer – and put together with a huge amount of thought. We order a crab salad to start, with Vesuvio tomato, lemon mayonnaise, fennel and rye toasts, which is a fresh and sweet mix, with impossibly thin wafers of crisp toast and sharp fennel. My vegan companion has burrata salad without the burrata, a delicious mix of figs, nuts and leaves, as suggested by our waiter who couldn’t have

been more accommodating about the vegan request. Main course options are appealing: scallops with girolles and summer truffle was tempting, but I chose roasted Rhug Estate fallow deer loin (I’m still not sure why it’s called deer and not venison) with purple figs, rainbow chard, root vegetables and herbed spelt, which I was warned would be pink. Pink it was - in the prettiest way, perfectly cooked to be soft, silky and light, its sweetness complemented by figs and caramelised vegetables. My friend’s vegan option was a warm salad of girolles, white beans, fennel and other roasted root vegetables cooked to tasty perfection. For pudding, chocolate mousse tart was decadent yet light, while my combo of dark chocolate truffle, pistachio amaretti and home made nougat with a glass of chilled Balfour English sparkling wine was a treat - essentially petit fours and fizz. With further restrictions placed on restaurants since our visit, now’s the time to be supporting wonderful local businesses like Clarke’s by booking a table.

Tequila is having a moment. Here are three to try By ABBIE SCHOFIELD

THAT'S THE SPIRIT VIVIR
Koktail A letterbox drinks subscription By PENDLE HARTE
Independent British tequila brand VIVIR creates its blue agavebased spirits at a fifth generation family-owned distillery in Jalisco, Mexico. The award-winning Tequila Blanco is smooth, clean and floral, with fresh aromas that make it seriously easy drinking.

As part of Selfridge’s new sustainable initiative Project Earth, Clase Azul has redesigned its iconic tequila bottle so it can be reused as a lamp, tumbler or ornament. Available exclusively at Selfridges, each bottle is handmade by artisans in the Mexican town of Santa Maria Canchesda.
ne lockdown thing that's set to stay in my house is the fixed routine of cocktail hour at 6pm. Just as the cat knows instinctively when it's time for his food, the adults in my house sense the approach of 6pm and gather with anticipation in the vicinity of the fridge. This signifies the end of the working day and the start of the evening, at a time when there's not much else to mark out the difference. It might be a simple gin and tonic, or possibly a glass of wine, sometimes it's a serious negroni – though our creativity is limited. So it's fortuitous that another good thing to come out of lockdown is Kocktail, a new cocktail delivery subscription service designed to increase the domestic repertoire. It works like this: sign up and you'll receive a monthly box of four dinky bottles containing hand-mixed and carefully crafted cocktails in single servings, packaged to fit through your letterbox. All you need to do is express a preference for light or dark. Each drink comes with an informative recipe card and a small sachet of garnish. Remember that these won't necessarily be cocktails you've had before – the idea is to expand your remit. So in our box we had Whiskey and Peach, described as 'a take on a Whiskey Sour'. We're told to shake and serve over ice with garhishes of Maraschino cherry and dehydrated lemon – and we're sold. Also in the box was a Toronto (essentially an Old Fashioned but with Fernet Branca), a Cucumber and Elderflower Rickey (dating back to the 1880s) and a Charlie Chaplin (sloe gin, apricot and lime). Lucky us – cheers.

Stuffed Aubergine
in Curry and Coconut Dal INGREDIENTS • 3 large aubergines, cut lengthways into 6 x 1⁄2cm-thick slices (750g) • 3 tbsp olive oil; 220g paneer (or extra-firm tofu), roughly grated • 2 limes • 45g hot mango pickle • 5g coriander • 100g large (not baby) spinach leaves, stems removed (60g) • Salt and black pepper Coconut Dal • 3 tbsp olive oil • 5 banana shallots • 45g fresh ginger • 2 red chillies, finely chopped • 30 fresh curry leaves • 1 tsp black mustard seeds • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander ;1 ⁄ 2 tsp ground turmeric; 2 tsp medium curry powder • 2 tsp tomato paste • 100g dried red lentils • 1 x 400ml tin of coconut milk
B
oth the aubergine slices and the lentil sauce can be prepared the day before, if you want to get ahead. In fact, you can make the whole dish a day ahead, up until before it goes into the oven, chill in the fridge and then just bring to room temperature before warming up.
METHOD Heat the oven to 220°C fan. In a large bowl, toss the aubergines together with the oil, 3 ⁄ 4 teaspoon of salt and a good grind of black pepper. Spread out on two parchment-lined baking trays and bake for 25 minutes, flipping halfway, until softened and lightly browned. Set aside to cool. 3 For the coconut dal, put 2 tablespoons of the oil into a large sauté pan on a mediumhigh heat. Once hot, add the shallots and fry for 8 minutes, until golden. Add the ginger, half the chilli and half the curry leaves (if using), cook for 2 minutes, then add the spices, tomato paste and lentils. Stir for a minute, then add the coconut milk, 600ml of water and 3 ⁄ 4 teaspoon of salt. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to medium and leave to simmer for 20 minutes, stirring once in a while, until the lentils are soft and the sauce is thick. Pour into a medium baking dish, around 28cm x 18cm, if making the aubergine rolls, and set aside. 4 In a small bowl, toss together the paneer, lime zest, mango pickle, 1 tablespoon of lime juice, the coriander and 1 ⁄ 8 teaspoon of salt. 1
2
5 Place one spinach leaf on top of each slice of aubergine. Put a heaped teaspoon of the paneer mixture in the middle, then roll up the aubergine, from the thinner end at the top down to the thicker bottom end, so the filling is encased. Put the aubergine roll seam side down in the lentil sauce, and repeat with the remaining aubergine slices, spinach and paneer. You should end up with about 18 rolls, all sitting snugly in the sauce. Press the rolls gently into the sauce, but not so far that they are submerged, and bake for 15–20 minutes, until the aubergine is golden-brown on top and the sauce is bubbling. Remove from the oven and leave to rest for 5 minutes. 6 Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a small pan on a medium-high heat. Add the remaining chilli and curry leaves and fry for a minute, until the curry leaves are crisp and fragrant. Spoon over the aubergine rolls, drizzle over the lime juice and serve with the coriander sprinkled on top.
Berry Platter with Sheep’s Labneh and Orange Oil
INGREDIENTS • 900g sheep’s yoghurt, or cow’s yoghurt as an alternative • 1 ⁄ 2 tsp salt • 100ml good-quality olive oil • 10g lemon thyme sprigs, plus a few extra picked thyme leaves to serve • 1 orange: finely shave the skin to get 6 strips • 200g blackberries • 250g raspberries • 300g strawberries, hulled and halved lengthways (or quartered if they’re larger) • 50g caster sugar • 1 lime: finely grate the zest to get 1 tsp, then juice to get 1 tbsp • 200g blueberries 150g cherries, pitted
T
his display of the season’s best can double up as a light dessert or as a brunch centrepiece. The berries you use are totally up to you, depending on what’s good and not too expensive. You can use fewer types, or some frozen berries, if you like, especially for those which get blitzed in the recipe. You’ll make more oil than you need; store it in a glass jar to drizzle over salads or lightly cooked vegetables.
METHOD 1 Put the yoghurt and salt into a medium bowl and mix well to combine. Line a colander with a piece of muslin large enough to hang over the sides and place the colander over a bowl. Transfer the yoghurt to the muslin and fold over the sides to completely encase the yoghurt. Place a heavy weight over the muslin (a few tins or jars will do), and transfer to the fridge to drain for at least 24 hours (and up to 48). 2 Meanwhile, put the oil into a small saucepan, for which you have a lid, on a medium heat. Heat gently for about 7 minutes, or until tiny air bubbles form. Remove from the heat, add the thyme and orange strips, then cover with a lid and leave to infuse, ideally overnight, though half an hour will also do the job. 3 The next day, put 50g of blackberries, 100g of raspberries and 100g of strawberries into the small bowl of a food processor along with the sugar and lime juice and blitz until completely smooth. Put all the remaining berries and the cherries into a large bowl along with the blitzed fruit and gently combine. You can serve it straight away or leave it in the fridge for a few hours, bringing it back to room temperature before serving. 4 Spread the labneh out on a large platter. Spoon over the berries, then sprinkle with the lime zest. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the infused oil, along with a couple of the orange strips and the extra picked thyme leaves.

dish its distinctive flavour. It gets its sharpness from amchoor, dried mango powder, which is used widely in Indian cooking as a souring agent. You’d recognise the flavour from samosas and pakoras, where it is often used. Both the coriander chutney and the tamarind sauce are great condiments to have on hand to brighten up sandwiches and wraps, to spoon over eggs, or to serve alongside tofu or fish. Double or triple them, if you like – the coriander chutney will keep in the fridge for up to a week and the tamarind sauce for up to 2 weeks.
METHOD 1
Preheat the oven to 220°C fan. Put the potatoes and 2 teaspoons of salt into a medium saucepan and top with enough cold water to cover by about 4cm. Place on a medium- high heat, bring to the boil, then simmer for 6 minutes, or until they’re almost cooked through but still retain a bite. Drain through a sieve and pat dry, then transfer to a large parchment-lined baking tray and toss with the oil, chaat masala, turmeric, 1⁄3 teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper. Roast, stirring once or twice, for 35 minutes, or until deeply golden. 3 Meanwhile, make the coriander chutney. Put all the ingredients and 1 ⁄ 4 teaspoon of salt into the small bowl of a food processor and blitz until smooth. Set aside until needed. 4 For the tamarind dressing, whisk together all the ingredients in a small bowl with 1 ½ teaspoons of water and set aside. 5 Spread the yoghurt out on a large round serving platter. Top with the coriander chutney, swirling it through without completely incorporating. Drizzle with half the tamarind dressing, and top with the potatoes, onion and chilli. Drizzle over the remaining tamarind, then sprinkle over the seeds and serve. 2

INGREDIENTS • 750g baby new potatoes, cut lengthways into 1cm-thick slices • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 tsp chaat masala • 1 ⁄ 2 tsp ground turmeric • 250g Greek-style yoghurt • 1 ⁄ 2 small red onion, peeled and thinly sliced into rounds on a mandolin, if you have one, or by hand (45g) • 1 green chilli, thinly sliced into rounds (10g) • 1 ½ tsp coriander seeds, toasted • 1 ½ tsp nigella seeds, toasted • Salt
Coriander Chutney • 30g fresh coriander • 1 green chilli, deseeded and roughly chopped (10g) • 1 tbsp lime juice 60ml olive oil Sweet Tamarind Dressing • 1 ½ tbsp shop-bought tamarind paste, or double if you’re extracting it yourself from pulp (see p. 20) • 1 ½ tsp caster sugar • 1 ⁄ 4 tsp chaat masala

his dish is inspired by aloo chaat, an Indian street food that has many regional variations, all of which are not for the faint-hearted because they are loaded with sweet and sour and a fair bit of crunch. This is a slightly tamer version, though still pretty ‘noisy’, both in flavour and in looks. It’s absolutely perfect for a weekend lunch, alongside other vegetables. Chaat masala is the slightly tangy spice mix that gives this

t’s not often that I read a menu and could happily enjoy every single dish on it. But that’s what happened when I sat down at Zuaya, Kensington. The Latin American restaurant serves sharing dishes inspired by the cuisines of Peru, Brazil and Mexico, with a bit of a Mediterranean influence thrown in. The result is a plethora of exciting tapas plates, where, unusually for a heavily-themed restaurant, taste is not overshadowed by concept and presentation. Entering Zuaya is like being swallowed up by a subterranean rainforest. It’s a concept that could
DECOR easily come off as Rainforest Café rather than luxe jungle, but it’s executed rather well, although probably not everyone’s cup of tea. There’s a small upstairs area and outside terrace, but sit downstairs for the full effect. The space is large, but tables are housed in little nooks and intimate booths, so everything feels pleasantly private — a must in this new age of socially-distanced dining. Verdant faux foliage hangs from the ceiling, tasselled lamps decorated with various exotic birds perch on tables and the forest green walls are accompanied by gold accents to give it a modern edge.
Exotic and Insta-friendly
PRICE Small plates £3-£8.75, Medium plates £8.50-£18.75
VERDICT As good as it looks
Zuaya’s signature cocktails make a refreshing liquid starter — ‘London to Lima’ combines pisco, falernum, lime, agave syrup and egg white — followed by the tapas which gradually come out one or two at a time. Dishes range from the wacky (raspberry gazpacho sprinkled with feta and pistachio) to crowd pleasers (wagyu beef short rib bao) but it all works. Slightly larger plates like Ibérico pork with butternut squash purée and garlic prawns in a sweet, buttery sauce go down well too. A surprising favourite is the wild rice. What I expect to be a filling yet unmemorable side dish is fantastically flavourful, mixed with sticky and sweet duck confit, tenderstem broccoli and shitake mushrooms. We’re too full for dessert, which is always a good sign. The attentive but not overbearing service makes the whole experience smooth and easy, despite the extra Coronavirus precautions. Zuaya gets a thumbs up from me. Z UAYA 35B Kensington High Street, W8 5EB;

Q&A
Girl's best
FRIEND Meet Jessica Warch and Sidney Neuhaus, whose lab-grown diamonds are revolutionising the industry I n t e r v i e w P H I L I P PA T H O M A S Q What is the founding
story behind Kimaï?
A Jess: Sidney and I are childhood friends
and grew up together in Antwerp, Belgium, where we were both surrounded by families who were embedded in the diamond and jewellery industry. We became more and more curious about supply chains and it became important to us to know where things we were buying originated from. So that’s why in 2018, we joined our creative and business heads to co-found Kimaï. The diamond jewellery industry really lacked transparency, so our main goal was to build a brand which set out to deliver progressive – but still luxurious – fine jewellery, catered to an ethically and environmentally conscious generation of consumers.
Q How did your backgrounds influence
your approach to your brand?
A Sidney: We were always fascinated
and drawn to diamonds while growing up, being granted uncommon insight into the industry from a young age. With Jess being born into a family of diamond traders and both my father and grandfather being well established Belgian jewellers, the diamond industry is a world we understand well. However, it is one famously shrouded in mystery and controversy. We wanted to address this lack of transparency and set out to re-align the world of fine jewellery by creating a modern brand with clarity, traceability and ethics at its core.
Q Kimaï diamonds differ from
regular diamonds in that they are lab-grown. Can you tell us about the differences between the two? A Jess: Physically and aesthetically, they are identical. The only difference is how the diamond has formed. In 2018, the US Federal Trade Commission

(FTC) re-categorised the definition of a diamond, removing the word ‘natural’. So, there is now no classified, scientific or molecular difference between mined and lab-grown diamonds, with industry experts unable to tell the difference visually. By replicating the conditions in which traditional diamonds grow below the earth’s surface, our lab-grown diamonds – identical in colour, cut, carat and clarity – retain the sought-after magic of traditional diamonds. But, without the ethical and environmental impact the industry has long been associated with. Q What was the decision behind making
your collections made-to-order?
A Sidney: The main reason is because
we’ve grown our business starting from a small budget and without huge investments. By selling directly to our customers, this also allows us to eliminate waste, so we don’t have excess inventory stock. Ultimately it benefits us as a growing brand, but also provides women with more purchasing power.
“Diamonds are shrouded in mystery and controversy”
Q Why is sustainability and transparency
so important to your business?
A Jess: It’s something that has become
increasingly important to us, especially as we’ve grown to understand more about diamond trading. We want to offer an alternative to the traditional industry; a place where you can still enjoy its beauty but without the negative connotations. Social media has also played a big part in it, now there’s so much information readily available to our generation and we’ve realised the impact we have. Because of this, we owe it to our customers to be as clear as possible about where our diamonds are made and our recycled gold is from.
Q As designers, where do you draw
inspiration for your collections from?
A Sidney: We draw inspiration directly
from our surroundings - whether it’s an emotional memory, or an innovative piece of art that we like, I design a piece of jewellery that’s elevated from my response to these experiences. For example, in September we launched our Unity necklace, which is a chain of gold links, inspired by the bond of communities during the lockdown. We are also constantly inspired by the women A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

design, but if I had to pick a favourite it would be the Bold earring or Signet ring. Q How would you recommend
clients style their pieces?
A Jess: All of our pieces are designed to be
that surround us. When designing our jewellery we tend to envision a woman wearing the piece, as a female led business, we want to empower and celebrate women. Q You have received a lot of support
from female investors such as Diane von Furstenberg and pride yourselves on being female entrepreneurs in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Is there a particular type of woman that you have in mind when you design your pieces? A Jess: The woman we have in mind is a modern woman who is taking a dominant role in purchasing jewellery, as well as pledging their commitment to an ethically and environmentally conscious future. Q What is your favourite item of
jewellery from your collection?
A Jess: Mine would have to be the
Semi hoops, I never take them off, even when I sleep. And the Swing earring, I love wearing it on the other ear. Sidney: It’s tough for me as I form a strong bond with all the pieces we
44
worn every day. They work as stand-alone pieces, but we encourage people to mix and match styles. There are pieces that look great when they are layered – particularly the bracelets and necklaces – which can be played around with, depending on if your style is more minimal, or if you prefer to go for the overstated look. Sidney and I have quite different styles, so we’re proof that the same pieces can suit any style, it’s just about what you put with it.
Q Where do you see the
future of Kimaï going?
A Sidney: Our mission is to re-educate,
re-align and re-imagine the diamond industry by being a driving force for the use of lab-grown diamonds. We’re advocating the beginning of a new movement, a shift in the traditional narrative where lab-grown diamonds become a proud symbol for morally and ethically conscious consumers. We believe that luxury doesn’t have to compromise the planet and the modern way is defined by transparency.

arc came to life in 2017 after spotting a gap in the market for highquality, socially conscious accessories for your four-legged friends. There was clearly a need for affordable and aesthetic products that stood out for all the right reasons, and Barc's range of stylish dog collars, leads and harnesses does just that, all while giving back at the same time. Barc's stripped-back style includes a range of wearable and contemporary shades, from Candyfloss Stripe to Soft Nude. Each colour seamlessly slots into everyday life no matter what your style, giving you the option to mix-andmatch, or coordinate with your pup. But it’s not just appearances they’re into. Barc also wanted to find a way to help dogs less fortunate than their own and have worked with a few charities over recent years. From November 2020, £1 from every Barc purchase will be donated to Wild at Heart Foundation to help save rescue dogs in need from cruelty, abuse and neglect. Later this month, Barc will be launching a brand new range of high-quality microfiber vegan leather, replacing their popular leather line. As well as fresh colourways, the newly upgraded metalware will have an anti-tarnish nanocoating. The move to a leather alternative
is just another example of how they are pushing the brand forward, becoming as socially conscious as possible. Barc will also be launching a range of toys and jackets this year, so keep your eyes peeled. BARC Barc are currently offering an exclusive discount to Absolutely readers. Head to the Barc website and enter code BARC20 at checkout for 20% off your first purchase. barclondon.com

Beautiful skin from the inside Skincare innovation in a drink
Skinade has been a game changer for skin hydration “My hair and nails look healthier as well. Even my Dermatologist noticed the improvement in my skin”.
Joelle - March 2019
2 weeks to Wow! “The difference was clear after 2 weeks! I am now in my 2nd month of Skinade and the suppleness in my skin is incredible. I have noticed a marked difference in the hydration and texture in my face. I am hooked!”
Andrea - March 2019
The brand trusted by professionals, and loved by you... The inside-out approach to skincare is becoming an increasingly appealing and effective way to achieve visible results. As we age, our collagen production slows down, affecting the appearance of our skin. Skinade’s active ingredients work together to produce a daily drink aimed at nourishing and supporting the skin from the inside for beautiful skin on the outside.
Love skinade “I just started my third month and see a great difference in the texture, elasticity and brightness of my skin highly recommend to everyone”.

aving a stranger touch your face isn’t anyone's idea of fun at the moment. Thankfully, the No-Touch Facial at The House of Elemis in Mayfair promises to deliver the same transformative results as Elemis’ other treatments, but instead of getting hands-on, the therapist uses various high-tech machines and safe-touch tools. They offer two facials, an antiaging Hydra-firm facial and the Resurfacer, which I opt for as it works on blemishes, uneven skin tone and pigmentation. Before the treatment, a camera scans my face to show which areas are dry, oily, have blocked pores and fine lines. The machine then gives product recommendations for the therapist to use. My skin is dry, so we concentrate on nourishing and hydrating with the Elemis Superfood range. The whole process is deeply relaxing, from the cool roller-balls which gently massage the skin to the soft silicone pads and LED light mask. An oxygen machine is also used to help my skin absorb active ingredients better. After the hour-long treatment, my skin looks juicy and glowing.

“It is amazing what the Hogarth have achieved in this small but unique club which we all love. Hats off to Tim and the team for the ingenuity that has gone into making the cub safe but still atmospheric to spend time. Our new Robot "Helios" is the latest new member keeping the club hygienically on top of this virus. Thank you to all its a haven for me and many of our fellow guests!” Christina Hodder

ager to get back to the gym after months of Covid-19 induced closures, members of The Hogarth Club have embraced its new health and safety measures. The Chiswick gem, which boasts two acres of beautifully maintained grounds with tennis courts, a pool, gym, studios, beauty clinic and bar, has thoughtfully considered how to make the club Covid-safe, while providing the best possible experience for members. “The staff has put in humongous efforts to make the club safe - and it shows! New online booking for the pool (only 3 max at a time), cleaning crews continuously cleaning, staff all wearing protective face coverings, anti-bacterial stations everywhere, newly designed lockers, one-way system, socially distanced equipment/ barrier in betweens, etc... it is deeply reassuring to see them making us all feel safe enough to visit, stay and use their facilities! Keeping the guests safe, AND the staff safe - that’s how it should be! Thanks, Hogarth!” Diana Tan
“It's been a joy to return to the Hogarth since they've reopened. All measures in place have made me feel comfortable and safe without imposing on my gym experience. It feels great to move again, thanks so much for looking after us members so well throughout lockdown and now going forward” Sarah Clark
“IT IS AMAZING WHAT THE HOGARTH HAVE ACHIEVED IN THIS SMALL BUT UNIQUE CLUB WHICH WE ALL LOVE”
“Myself and my partner have joined the club recently and could not be more impressed. The H&S measures around the club are easy to follow and enforced in an incredibly polite manner when necessary by the wonderful staff. The bar is lovely and again really good cleaning mechanisms in place in all parts of the club. I think of all the public spaces I have been since lockdown being relaxed, here is the place dealing with the new guidelines in the best manner. Love it!” Opeline Kellet
“Have been back to the club on numerous occasions since reopening; the level of cleanliness and signage is better than in any other establishment I’ve visited.” James McFadden
“The Hogarth staff have done amazingly well to provide a super safe environment for members returning to use the facilities. It is wonderful to be able to swim again and to enjoy drinks in the bar or on the terrace. Brilliantly done, Hogarth. Thank you!” Alison Martin
“Brilliant service and great health club overall. I've been a member little over a year and can honestly not recommend this place enough. Friendly staff with and great overall atmosphere and top of the range facilities that are improving with the new outside gym space.” Ashley Prowse

“Victorian layouts don’t suit the demands of 21st century family life – let alone the reality of a pandemic”
O
ur homes have never b e en more important – and never has so much been ex pected of them as during this pandemic. Where we used to leave in the morning and come back in the evening, we are now working form home, possibly alongside our partners and children, and the demands on our spaces have changed. We now need home offices and space to do yoga, as well as quiet places for children to learn. Now, more than ever, people have become aware of the limitations of their spaces, and extensions are the obvious solution. The proliferation of scaffolding, skips and drilling noise on our streets and endless school gates conversations all underline the fact that everyone is at it. Building projects are everywhere, because we’re just not as willing to put up with outdated layouts, awkward spaces or unattractive features as we used to be – plus we’re all savvy investors too. Not only do we all want to improve our living spaces, but we also want to profit financially from them. Much of the UK’s housing stock is made up of standard Victorian or Edwardian terraced houses, with their warrens of
small rooms, galley kitchens and unused side returns. These layouts don’t suit the demands of 21st century family life – let alone the reality of a pandemic. In some ways we now need less separation, with kitchens at the centre of the home and living areas often integrated with cooking areas. Extending across the side return to create what can become a vast kitchen space has become commonplace, often taking over the former dining room or back room too and creating space for a separate utility room. The awkward space that once was the top of the side return can happily accommodate a desk and shelves to become a workspace for a home-working adult, or a homework space for two children. Living rooms commonly shrink to become essentially tv rooms, while kitchens dominate most of the ground floor footprint. In terms of investment, a side return is certainly worth it, says Hamish Allan of Winkworth. “It’s an expensive project if you look at it per square foot, but it creates a very different family space and will increase desirability tenfold when selling,” he says. The other obvious thing to do with your three-bed terrace is to extend into the loft to create another bedroom and bathroom – this is so cost-effective that it’s simply the sensible thing to do. A smaller first floor bedroom

can then be freed up to become a home office, or a separate study space can be cleverly carved into the eaves. A well-designed home can improve quality of life, offer functional solutions on the smallest of sites, and create beautiful spaces even within the most restricted of budgets. However, taking on a house refurbishment can be daunting and harder than you think. While anyone can have a vision, knowing how to realise it doesn’t necessarily follow. Hiring a fleet of architects and builders can be timeconsuming and costly, and managing them all is a job in itself, which is why many people look to companies that can do everything for them. West London-based Elnaz Namaki and her business partner Hugo van Bilderbeek run a streamlined business in complete house refurbishments, including a property search service. They’ll find houses for their clients and then strip them back to create luxurious contemporary residences, navigating planning and managing the entire project, from conception to moving in. They’ll take care of floorplans, extensions, moodboards, lighting design and joinery – and they’ll make sure that all the sockets and switches are in the right place too. Their vision is a complete transformation and there are certain clever things that A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

“Even the trickiest spaces can be transformed”
PROCTER & SHAW’S AWARDWINNING EXTENSION
they will always do. Like maximising ceiling height, for instance. Old houses will often have enormous firehoods behind ceiling lights – and it’s easy enough to strip them away and gain probably 15cm. Doors too – they’ll raise the frame and install a taller door. Stripping a house back and redoing the infrastructure may not be for the fainthearted but there’s no other way to create the full luxe feel with underfloor heating, carefully placed lighting, soundproof doors and unobtrusive pipework. This type of project may seem eyewateringly expensive, but likely to be well worth the investment. Namaki and van Bilderbeeek’s recent project in Kensington went on to break all sales records for its street. It was an unusual house, taller than its neighbours and unusual, with an Art Nouveau style that hadn’t been touched over the years. Inside, Namaki reconfigured the entire layout, which was lacking in natural light and divided into lots of little rooms around a central staircase. Changing the style and location of the windows opened up the space and the final result was an impressive contemporary home featuring all of Namaki’s signature design features.
Every year, London’s most ingenious residential design projects are celebrated in New London Architecture’s Don’t Move Improve Awards, all demonstrating how even the trickiest spaces can be entirely transformed with a bit of architectural nous. This year’s winner was a terrace house refurbishment and rear extension in south London by architects Procter & Shaw, which provided the existing residence with additional living, dining and study spaces, and was praised by the judges for introducing more natural light via a large glass skylight. Sympathetically renovated period properties offer the highest returns, and it’s always advisable to maintain a house’s history and character while incorporating contemporary elements and beautiful finishes – and considering clever ways to accommodate activities that once would have taken place outside the home. Space is everything now.

key characteristic of all XUL projects is light. The question of how best to channel three directions of light into the building – from above, back and front – is a basic starting point for the architects. This family home in Highgate had multiple circulation issues with different levels and spaces flowing in an uncomfortabe and unordered manner. By addressing these issues, the architects were able to create a space which is usable and filled with light. Key to the refurbishment was the scheme to open up the view from the front door, allowing the eye to see straight through to the garden. This draws light in from both sides – XUL opened up the plastic skylight above the stairwell and replaced it with a contemporary glass alternative which now floods the space with light. The entrance hall now includes a bench in place of the dining room door to allow for storage within

this vestibule and a wider wall area in the dining room. Opening up the walls from the kitchen and living room into the dining room allowed for this door area to be reclaimed for another use. Sebastian Sandler, director at XUL explains: “The house was spread over three floors and we decided to relocate the master bedroom to the top floor and create a suite. This allowed the middle floor to become bedrooms for children and guests.” The master suite comprises a bedroom, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe, accessed via the bathroom. The bath takes central space under the dormer window and curved ceiling and has a steam shower in addition to a standard shower. The kitchen floor was laid with polished concrete which was continued to the kitchen countertop. Together with the grey cabinets, this took on an industrial look which was warmed up with the clever use of plywood, terracotta lamps and pots and decorated with greenery throughout. The room is filled with light from two sides and has a view to the front door. The practice has gained a reputation for nurturing relationships through projects. XUL was invited to create a concept for this project
as directors Sebastian Sandler and Maia Lemlij are close friends with the homeowners. This is a common thread with their projects as they work extremely closely with the owners and build even deeper friendships. “As long as you are honest and communication is always open, who can you trust more than your friends to have your interest at heart? It is nice to then get to enjoy their houses together spending time there” explains Maia Lemlij. Restoring original features of the property was part of the brief to the architects. Reclaimed wood was used for the flooring within the refurbished living room. The music room (or “green room” as the owners refer to it) has builtin storage which was already present in the house from a previous renovation. The homeowner enlisted the services of a fabric consultant who chose fabrics for the rooms to add colour and warmth to this vibrant home. The interior design was originally conceived by Philip Lihou from Inner Space London (innerspacelondon.com). xularchitecture.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

BIRD Ed Carpenter, founder of Very Good and Proper, tells Absolutely about the launch of his hero Pigeon Light 20 years ago Words E V E H E R B E R T
How did the pigeon light come about? The idea came from a project whilst studying at the RCA. The brief for the project was something like “Inside Out” and from what I remember it was essentially about looking at cities in a different way. For some reason, I ended up focusing on souvenirs – what they mean and how, as objects, they can represent a city. At the time I was commuting to the Royal College from the East End and most mornings I’d get off the tube and walk through Hyde Park. I noticed that pigeons were practically the only wild animal that you’d see in London. Researching souvenirs, I became interested in these kitsch animal figurines you could buy that always related to the countryside. I decided that I wanted to celebrate something urban and the Pigeon Light evolved from that. It became a design icon, stocked in museum and design shops everywhere. What do you think made it such a success? I think its wide appeal made it such a success. People could relate to either its design simplicity or reference to the kitsch aesthetic – it didn’t matter which one, and it felt at home in most places. Why the reissue and what has changed? It’s been 20 years since I designed the original and to coincide with the launch of our new e-commerce shop, I felt it was the perfect time to bring the Pigeon
Light back. I worked closely with our in-house design team to update and streamline the design, which in the end has resulted in a more refined, functional and minimal product while retaining the warmth and humour of the original. The materials have also been updated and the shell is now made from a high-quality and fully recyclable polycarbonate this is much stronger than the original acrylic. We’ve also added a solid beech base with powder-coated metal weight which vastly improves the light when free standing. Tell us about its manufacture The original Pigeon Light mould was sculpted and shaped in clay by myself and the whole making process after that was time consuming and handson (including the vacuum forming process which I also did myself at first.) It was great fun, but these materials and processes had limitations in terms of strength and scalability. So when the time came to look at all this again after 20 years, the industrial designer in me wanted to improve things – we spent a lot of time designing how all the parts are assembled and clip together. For example, the shell is now injection moulded in a high-quality polycarbonate which enables us to clip and snap things together without fear of the material sheering. I also decided to drop the original clothes peg (which was somewhat controversial in the design studio) as I felt it could be improved as part of the new production process. The final thing we did was to introduce a turned beech wood base which means the light can sit on a table more easily than before. What other design projects are you involved in? Lots! As CEO and Creative Director of VG&P and Isokon Plus I’m involved in many different design projects at a time – not all of which are my own – which I really enjoy. Highlights at the moment include a new outdoor chair, a storage system, new home-working solutions and adding to our expanding range of accessories for our new e-commerce venture. Which designers do you admire? Masters such as Achiile Castiglioni, Jean Prouvé, Marcel Breuer and Charlotte Perriand. Closer to home designers such as Jasper Morrison, Michael Marriott and Barber Osgerby. Slightly more contemporary I also really like the work of Cecilie Manz and also the designers we work with at VG&P. verygoodandproper.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

s we spend more time at home, colours need to be easy to live with. Farrow and Ball’s colour expert Joa Studholme says quite rightly: “We need colours that are warm, welcoming as a result of wanting to find calm within the chaos of our turbulent world. We want our homes to be places not just for rest and recovery, but also for rejuvenation and inspiration.’ So it’s no suprise that Dulux’s colour of the year for 2021 is Brave Ground, a natural earthy shade. But earthy shades are not the only ones we’ll be seeing in 2021, as other, contrasting trends focus on colour and drama. It’s a mixed bag.
Creating a welcoming interior to come home to will reduce feelings of anxiety and allow you to enjoy the space you’re in
Earthy Dulux’s colour of the year for 2021 is Brave Gound, an earthy, mushroomy shade that’s calming and warm, while retaining a chic urban vibe. A warm, elemental neutral, Brave Ground brings a bolstering, balancing feel to any room. It’s also a versatile shade that lets other colours shine. This warm balancing neutral connects us back to the colours of the earth – it’s a versatile colour that flexes in tone depending on the time of day. Valspar shade Brown Bunny will be bang on trend for 2021, giving a premium and luxury feel to interiors. This warm and earthy shade is perfect for creating a chic and contemporary scheme at home, and matches perfectly with sleek modern furnishings, gold fixtures and green accessories to achieve a sophisticated elegance. This hue along with Valspar’s exceptional range of neutral shades will create welcoming
interiors ideal for the winter months. Sue Kim, Valspar’s Senior Design Expert, says: “We’re constantly battling being busy in all aspects of life and more and more we’re seeking respite from stress with products, tools and services that balance our fast-paced lifestyles. Creating a welcoming interior to come home to will reduce feelings of anxiety to allow you to really enjoy the space you’re in. Neutral tones such as Brown Bunny are restful, yet stimulating and help to create a clean and balanced design. Chalky whites also blend quietly with these colours so you are left with a calming interior that will rejuvenate

H O M E | COLOUR TRENDS EARTHBORN PAINTS: GRASSY
Rich and Warm In challenging times, we crave warm tones that will enrich our homes and create cosy sanctuaries away from the outside world. In 2021 we have moved away from dark charcoals and blues and towards the warmer tones of nature. Incredibly chic by day and cosy by night, they bring a grounded but luxurious atmosphere that is thoughtprovoking as well as soothing, particularly when paired with other hues found in the natural world.
Greens Greens reinforce our connection to nature and create the perfect welcome. Farrow and Ball’s olive-coloured Sap Green has a mid-century modern feel, while Crown’s Botanical Noir is a dark and dramatic shade of tropical leaf with a hint of peacock, part of the Elle Decoration range. Very different in mood is Earthborn’s Grasy, which is a cooler and calmer backdrop for a bedroom and also works well in a bathroom.
Blues become richer and more luxurious in the evening light CROWN: CUSHION CRAZE AND POWDERED CLAY
CROWN: AFTERSHOW
LITTLE GREENE: BLUE VERDITER
Blues Uncomplicated blues feel familiar and have a soothing effect in the home despite their cooler undertones. When used in areas deprived of light or in evening rooms lit by table lamps, they become much richer and more luxurious in feel. Crown’s Aftershow is a deep, purply shade with an inky tone, while Earthborn’s Skipper and Little Greene’s Blue Verditer are lighter, cooler and more suited to daylight.

e have all spent so much time looking at our homes this year. Everyone will have at some point felt the urge to improve, or even simply to change, something about their space. Often we want to change something without knowing exactly what it is we want to change. And spending so much time at home has led many of us to consider things that we can actually do ourselves, projects that are achievable and realistic for those of us with limited DIY skills. Hanging pictures, for instance, or putting up shelves. Painting a small room perhaps, or a single wall. But one way of creating a dramatic change that’s much less frightening than it sounds is to paint a floor. If your floorboards are in fairly good shape, you can change a room’s whole feel and character in a single day with a couple of coats of paint and a little bit of prep work.
You can change a room’s whole feel and character in a single day with a couple of coats of paint and a little bit of prep work
FLOOR AND WALLS PAINTED IN FARROW AND BALL BLACKENED NO.2011
Okay, maybe quite a lot of prep work. Yes, you’ll have to move furniture out of the room, of course. And you’ll have to think carefully if you’re painting any kind of thoroughfare, being careful not to paint yourself into a corner. But Patrick O’ Donnell, brand ambassador for Farrow & Ball Brand, knows that it’s worth it. And it’s not as hard as it sounds, partly because all mistakes are rectifiable, mostly by simply painting over them. Painting your floorboards is not only a stylish solution, but an economical one too – vastly cheaper than tiles, carpet or parquet, yet beautiful and a great base for rugs. Once you’re comfortable with the idea, why not experiment with some stencilling too?
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
H OW TO PA I NT A F LO O R Advice from Farrow and Ball’s Patrick O’Donnell is key. This is the labour 1here,Preparation of love - there are no shortcuts but some patience. Following the manufacturer’s guidelines will give your floor the best longevity and finish for every day modern living.
For bare wood floors, sand back 2 sharp edges and any raised grain then fill any open joints with a
dedicated non-flexible wood filler. Ensure the floor is thoroughly clean then sand to a smooth finish, vacuum, and wipe down with a damp cloth- you are now ready to start painting. Apply the first coat of wood floor primer undercoat, allow to dry, then apply two coats of your chosen colour topcoat. Remember to work back to your natural exit point of the room! If previously painted, you will need to try and remove as much of the old paint as possible for the best adhesion.
If your room is starved of natural 3 light, this can be another way to encourage light to bounce around
the room. Paint your floor in pale colours from All White and Ammonite, through to Cromarty and Skylight, then scatter with Berber weave rugs or sisal mats to soften the space.
For more drama, go dark, try a shade like Railings for a beautiful blueblack note and even continue the colour on all your skirting and door architraves for a super sleek look. farrow-ball.com

H O M E | PROMOTION
It’s crucial to create clear boundaries research found that more than half of global executives do not plan to return to the same fast pace of life, and many have spent more time focusing on their wellbeing, passions and hobbies. “This is important for protecting wellbeing and mental health. We also believe that individuals, families and employers must be committed to talking openly about concerns, and to seeking help early,” says Dr James.
Get help when you need it
Business as unusual
F
Stigmas around mental health conditions can lead to delays in getting treatment. But early diagnosis can have a positive impact on the long-term prognosis. Dr James concludes: “At Bupa Global, we recognise that mental health is just as important as physical health and believe in helping people to feel their best and stay that way too. We know that when a family member is struggling with their mental health, it can impact the whole family – that’s why we offer extensive mental health cover for individuals and their families.”
Protecting your wellbeing while working from home
For many people, the home is the place they return to, to unburden themselves of the stresses and strains of life. But during the pandemic many aspects of life have merged, and homes have had to provide not only a safe-haven for individuals and their families, but a functional space to work too. Recent data from Bupa Global’s Executive Wellbeing Index 1, shows that 38 per cent of high-net-worth individuals plan to continue working flexibly from home, and almost one in five will work from their holiday home. But mental health experts advise that the blurring of divisions between work and home-life and the impact on wellbeing can be complex. So, what steps can people take to protect their family space and wellbeing and ensure the ‘home-boardroom’ is productive and fulfilling?
Create physical and mental boundaries
For Dr Luke James, Bupa Global’s Medical Director, it’s crucial to create clear boundaries at home: “We hear from many executives that they’re not able to turn off, or that they’re struggling to concentrate, and it’s here where a physical workspace, which can be exited after the working day is over, can really help.” It also means imposing psychological boundaries too, ensuring that both work time and family time are protected. For some, this means shutting down emails and collaborative technologies once the working day is over or reducing non-urgent calls at weekends. For others, preserving lunch breaks and time to exercise is particularly important.
Stay focused on the ‘life-work’ balance you want
For many, life is not going back to ‘business as usual’ anytime soon. Bupa Global’s

MODERN LIFE Inside Waldo Works’ stylishly designed apartment at Television Centre Words E V E H E R B E R T

esign studio Waldo Works has completed the interiors of a penthouse apartment inside London’s Television Centre, which takes cues from the “pure geometrics” of post-war British aesthetics. The apartment takes over the top two floors of the ring-shaped Helios building in west London’s Television Centre. Having served as the headquarters for the BBC until 2013, the centre has since been converted into high-end residences and leisure facilities by architecture firm AHMM. East London-based Waldo Works was brought on board to develop the interiors of the penthouse which, measuring 377 square metres, is the largest residence to complete at the Television Centre. Instead of trying to channel a contemporary aesthetic, the studio looked into the context surrounding the 1960s Television Centre complex. The Festival of Britain became a key influence – taking place in 1951, the event set out to celebrate

A playful and upbeat type of modernism has been applied to the textures, patterns and colour palettes throughout the space the nation’s achievements and the regeneration of its architecture, design, science and arts industries following the devastation of the second world war. These bold and contemporary interiors for a three-bedroom, triple aspect penthouse, which crowns the top level of the Crescent offering unparalleled vistas across Hammersmith Park. Inspired by the colours and structures of the time when the BBC Television Centre was conceived – a playful and upbeat type of modernism has been applied to the textures, patterns and colour palettes throughout the space. The penthouse is artfully curated with furniture by Living Divani, Glas Italia, Felix McCormack, Herrenhuis, Cristian Zuzunaga alongside bespoke designs by Waldo Works. The studio chose graphic textiles by Anni Albers and Christopher Farr which complement the expressive interior architecture from Archer Humphryes. Added intrigue is created through a commissioned paper sculpture designed by Deepa Panchamia rising through the living room. Archer Humphryes has created a maximalist aesthetic, inspired by an individual interested in the arts, for the statement penthouse. A hallway mirrors that of a gallery and makes a breath-taking first impression and displays extraordinary attention to detail with a bespoke poured resin floor. An innate sense of luxury underpins Archer Humphryes’ overall design vision. A fireplace placed in the centre of the living room provides a sense of spatial drama and offers an indulgent setting for entertaining guests. The bedrooms have been designed with exquisite and surprising design details including a marbleclad master bathroom, which is concealed behind a hands-free door and features a dramatic circular bath providing a hidden sanctuary. Apartment C5.802, spanning 3,203 sq.ft accompanies the top level and offers 1,498 sq.ft of outside space over four roof terraces and is available to buy for £5,995,000. A B S O L U T E LY. At the heart of everything creates is verve and love of pattern and colour
I
nternationally acclaimed designer Sarah Campbell has been a painter of patterns all her working life. She and her sister, the late Susan Collier, embarked on their careers in the 1960s. Starting out by creating designs for Liberty, they later co-founded the original design partnership Collier Campbell in 1979. Working together for more than 50 years, they made many iconic designs that are recognizable today – Bauhaus, Egyptian Birds, Cote d’Azure and the stunning Central Park design, commissioned by a woman whose own apartment overlooks that famous New York attraction. Since 2011, Sarah has worked independently, successfully establishing a new chapter in her creative story. Verve, love of pattern and colour, and inventive freshness are at the heart of everything she creates. With a lifetime in pattern she is constantly developing her skills and design language, marrying hand-painted technique with new digital technology. She writes a blog reflecting on the world as she sees it and is the author of ‘The Art of Pattern’ a book recording work made for Liberty of London prints in the ‘60s and ‘70s and ‘Dailies’, a visual journal of 2019 recorded with a different piece of work for each day.

THE MATTRESS Choosing a mattress is a minefield. Springs or foam? Natural materials or hypoallergenic ones? Or a hybrid? We are sold on Brooke and Wilde’s Elite mattress, which is impressively thick and offers the magical balance of support and cosiness. You can jump on it and sink into it because it’s both soft and sturdy in an improbable combination. Its secret? It contains both memory foam and mini pocket springs among its multiple layers. Adding springs to a foam mattress gives it that bounce that pure foam lacks, while this specialist foam has cushioning qualities to create the perfect supportive environment. And there are layers to control temperature too, avoiding any of the nasty overheating of some memory foam mattresses as well as the unwelcoming cold that sprung mattresses sometimes generate. What's not to like? The cover is removable for washing and there’s a 100 night trial period. From £799 brookeandwilde.com

THE LINEN Not sure what kind of bedding you like best? Take Tom and Dick’s clever online sleep quiz, a series of probing questions that will determine whether you’re more of a percale, a sateen or a linen person. It ultimately comes down to whether you’re more likely to be hot or cold. We scored linen – and Tom and Dick’s Portland range is laid back and light with a beautiful natural texture. Linen keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, and its casually rumpled look is a beautiful addition to your bedroom. Tom and Dick’s stylish packaging is a real treat too. he perfect night’s sleep is the holy grail of life. The quality of our sleep defines our day – and a good night will always lead to happier, more productive and successful waking hours. But how to achieve it? When designing a bedroom, there are lots of factors to consider – lighting, temperature, colours. But most important is, of course, the bed itself. Swedish bed company Carpe Diem Beds was founded 25 years ago by chiropractor Börje Thuleskär, a firm believer in the importance of sleep for body and mind. He sought out the best mattress on the market, but wasn’t impressed by it. One day he fell asleep on a bed of heather by the sea in Sweden – where he realised that nature
112
contoured to his body far more than any bed ever had. This led him to embark on a quest to build the perfect bed, one that would mimic the feeling of weightlessness he had had on the heather. The quest took thousands of hours and a partnership with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden. The final result is Carpe Diem’s patented Contour Pocket System, which has a unique cushioning ability. It gently yields and supports at the same time, instantly moulding to your body’s contours and changing with your every movement. You can feel the mattress embrace your hips and shoulders while gently supporting your lumbar and waist. Your spine is relieved of tension, and your muscles can finally relax. Just like lying on a bed of heather on the cliffs by the Swedish sea.

LINDA SCHORI, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT CARPE DIEM BEDS
Linda Schori, Creative Director at Carpe Diem Beds is excited for the brand to reach the London market. “Sleep is so important – an entirely sensorial experience. We want your bedroom to be your sanctuary, the place where you go to truly unwind and relax. We have been a leader in the Scandinavian markets for 25 years and are excited for Londoners to be able to experience the same relaxation they would by the Swedish seaside – right in their own bedrooms. All of our beds are hand-made in our factory in Lysekil – the place where our founder was first inspired to start redesigning what it means to unwind. This allows our heritage to trickle through everything we do. Our beds are a true piece of craftmanship, and just like any piece of art, the bed-maker signs the finished bed as a stamp of quality.” With an array of legs, headboards, fabrics and functions, these beds are designed to be as beautiful to look at as they are to sleep in. Carpe Diem Beds offers a full bedroom design experience so that you can create your individual sanctuary where you can unwind. As beautiful as they are innovative, these beds are handmade-to-order and are fully customisable to your needs. From beautiful nature-inspired fabrics from the Designers’ Guild and Romo Group to an assortment of bed linen, bedroom accessories, and furniture, Carpe Diem Beds will help you design the bedroom sanctuary of your dreams. lice Temperley’s new homeware range is a capsule collection of luxury pieces that epitomise her brand’s signature modern bohemianism. Having launched her eponymous label in 2000, Temperley pioneers artisan techniques and intricate hand-worked embellishment, an aesthetic synonymous with her creative style. The debut homeware collection, which incorporates velvet and satin embroidered cushions as well hand-embroidered throws and statement tablecloths, reinforces the Temperley lifestyle. She says: “I first made quilts for my home 12 years ago and still love them all. People used to stay over and want to leave with them, so it feels completely natural to be incorporating them into our collections. Homeware is a form of luxury and each piece in our line is designed to decorate any room of the home, adding a touch of fun through colour and pattern.” Iconic archive prints are reimagined and translated by Alice into luxurious pieces that add statement and comfort to any home. Square velvet cushions feature the ‘Lotus’, Euphoria’ and ‘Harmony’ prints,

handcrafted in England and using an intricate placement print design from the brand’s archives. The same prints feature across the collection of throws and tablecloths, in addition to others including the ‘Escher’ and ‘Saba’, an iconic leopard print. Handmade and embroidered in India using traditional craftsmanship, the new luxury throws incorporate Alice’s exclusive design and represent the reinvention of a classic. C
harlie Smallbone, founder of Ledbury Studio, and his team faced a signif icant design challenge in this latest project. The existing kitchen of a 1920s house in north London was long and narrow with very little natural light. Located to the rear of the house and accessed via an adjoining dining room off the entrance hall, the advantageous lofty proportions of the space were unfortunately complicated by three different ceiling heights (the consequence of crude building works some 30 years ago). At the back of the kitchen was a door leading to a former cold store that had been converted into a cramped utility room. Here, Charlie reveals how they created the stunning new space. Firstly, I wanted to get more natural light into the space. To achieve this, the utility room was replaced by a small lean-to extension accessed via glass doors at the rear of the kitchen and we also installed a large roof light. Secondly, the client was keen to push the cupboards as high as they could to maximise every inch of storage space. However, at the same time, they wanted to retain the original coving. My solution was to put coving on top of the furniture and use this as the lighting recess that runs all the way round the room. The recess then joins seamlessly with the ceiling coving above, which in turn becomes part of the furniture. It is a great way to link the ar-
chitecture of the room and the furniture, making them appear as one. We chose fluted glass for cabinet fronts to keep the design light and airy, but without having the contents on display as you would with open shelves. The worktops are hard-wearing Classico Marble Arabesque quartz coupled with Verre Eglomise splashbacks, whereby pure gold leaf was applied to the reverse of toughened glass and antiqued. Demonstrating an eye for detail, the client requested a floral design be gilded onto the Verre Eglomise surface behind the hob, transforming it into a standout feature. The kitchen is mainly taken from our Ledbury Shaker collection, but the client was also keen to introduce our signature use of metals. We added aged brass to the edge of the cooker hood and also used it for the plate rack’s supporting brackets, the hanging rails mounted on the splashbacks and the cupboard handles. The client is a prolific cook with a library of recipe books now housed in a floor-toceiling bookshelf within easy reach of the prep space. There is a generous break-
WE WANTED TO GET MORE NATURAL LIGHT INTO THE SPACE fast cupboard too, combining a wealth of storage with dedicated space for microwave and coffee machine. Space to store wine was another priority, so we integrated a wine storage appliance into the design, in addition to the open wine storage in the mint-coloured cupboard. To the right of this is a walk-in cupboard for the boiler, and a slot for the washing machine and tumble dryer, stacked one on top of the other to maximise space. Finally, the units either side of the range cooker constitute one of the most important parts of the design for me. What looks like multiple wall and base cupboards are actually two complete pieces of furniture. ledburystudio.com A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

ounded in France in 1925,Le Creuset is credited with bringing colour to the kitchen for the first time with its fiery orange cast iron, inspired by the glow of molten cast iron used to make each piece. Almost a century later all cast iron products are still handcrafted in the original foundry in Fresnoy-leGrand, France. 1935 saw the launch of the first advertising for Le Creuset with campaigns on radio and in print to promote the cooking benefits of enamelled cast iron. The adverts beautifully conveyed the message of home cooking with images of quintessentially French wives and mothers preparing evening meals in their Volcanic Le Creuset pieces. Le Creuset began to develop its product range with cookers, charcoal stoves, hot plates for electric cookers and kitchen utensils. After the Second World War, Le Creuset focused on developing the cast iron range and was a major innovator of the time with new and exciting styles and pieces such as the Légumier casserole inspired by the cuisine of the French Riviera. Throughout this period new, innovative enamel colours and finishes were launched. From 1952 onwards export to other European countries began and 50% of the production was for the United States. During the 1980s Le Creuset expanded to new audiences all over the world particularly the UK,

the US and Australia, with the famous slogan “Every good cook should know a little French: Le Creuset”– promoting the image of excellent taste and French cuisine on an international scale. In 1985 Le Creuset was classified among the 30 most well-known French products in the world. In 1989 Saatchi & Saatchi was appointed as advertising agency. Renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado agreed to take photographs in the French factory showing the care and craftsmanship that goes into every pot. In its 90th year Le Creuset updated its Classic Cast Iron range for the first time in 50 years, introducing an all-new improved Signature range. Crafted from the highest quality materials, every Le Creuset Cast Iron product passes through at least 15 pairs of skilled craftsmen’s hands to finish and inspect each the piece ensuring an exceptional quality reassuringly covered with a Lifetime Guarantee. Le Creuset’s beautiful new Marylebone store is stocking the entire range of 2020’s new Deep Teal colourway. Outside the BOX
Absolutely discovers how a simple lunchbox unlocked a design philosophy for Dan Black of Black+Blum Interview P E N D L E H A R T E
The western world is just beginning to wake up to the benefits that a good lunch box can give
What was the founding idea behind Black+Blum and what was your first product? At Black+Blum we aren’t into solving problems that don’t exist. We are not about following the latest trend or creating products that are similar to what is already on the market. From that perspective, we have an unusual business philosophy in that we are anti-commercial, anti-gadget and antifashion. We create premium-quality, good, honest products that work, with a focus on re-use and sustainability. As designers, we have the ability to shape, influence, and educate the market to be more discerning and this is our aim at Black+Blum. We launched our first lunch box, the Box Appetit, 12 years ago, taking inspiration from Japan, whose relationship with bento boxes and taking food on-the-go is so much more considered than the West. When it first launched the original design was revolutionary and received an amazing reaction from consumers. It might look like a simple product, but this hides the huge amount of design thought and testing that went into creating it. As a designer, the best thing that can happen is when you discover a category that hasn’t been addressed by design for a long time. Kids got fun lunchboxes and adults made do with boring, waxy plastic food containers. In Japan people were selling beautiful wood lacquered lunchboxes, which didn’t compare to the lacklustre sandwich, crisps and a penguin in a boring plastic container that the English and even US markets were
making do with. The western world is just beginning to wake up to the benefits that a good lunch box can give. What is your best-seller now? Our award-winning Stainless Steel Lunch Box continues to be one our best-selling product. The functional design is timeless in aesthetic and has an almost retro military/utilitarian look. The silicone band holds the fork, gives it a colour accent and is also a design nod to traditional bento A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

H O M E | Q&A
We want to create products that become antiques of the future
boxes. The end result is an iconic design that ages well and is a pleasure to carry your food in and eat from. In recent months it has received The Independent’s coveted Best Buy award, along with being voted number one reuseable lunchbox by the Evening Standard. Our hand-blown glass Eau Carafe has also been extremely popular, using a natural active charcoal filter to clean and purify water by removing chlorine and add good minerals. The result is purified, cleaner tasting tap water, which eliminates the need to buy single-use plastic bottles. Tell us about designing with sustainability in mind. We’re not going to solve the environmental issues that we’re passionate about by encouraging people to buy products that
they don’t need. There are already too many products being made in the world and there is far too much greenwashing across the category. But our designs can do their part for sustainability on two fronts. Firstly in relation to function. Our products help encourage people to lead a more sustainable life. Water bottles obviously help people stop buying bottled water, while lunch boxes can help people stop buying convenience take-out food which can save on food waste and packaging waste. Secondly, in relation to product longevity, we aim to create products with soul. This is all do with choosing materials, form, function and even colour/pattern (or lack of) that allows the designs to age well and last. If a product is truly functional (not a short term gimmick/fad) then it will be enjoyed and cherished for years to come. Our Stainless Steel Lunch Box is a good example, as it has the ability to age well. It can dent, scratch, and lose its shine, but this will all add to the character of the product. These lunchboxes were the first all-steel ones that are 100% leakproof due to the vacuum seal. They have a consciously retro aesthetic that helps give them an almost timeless, vintage appeal. We have kept colour to a minimum with only the fork holding silicone band offered in olive, ocean, or orange hues. Even the packaging is unbleached, easy to recycle cardboard that has a vintage appeal. Our designs might cost more than your standard plastic food containers, but it will last the user a lifetime and hopefully, one day, become a cherished ‘product with soul’. If we’ve done our job correctly, you’ll buy a product from us with a timeless aesthetic and function, that ages well, develops a story and soul and will work perfectly for a lifetime. Can you describe Black+Blum’s aesthetic in three words? In recent years we have adopted a ‘modern utilitarian’ aesthetic that is both minimal and timeless. It has a hint of vintage rugged honesty but is exercised in a contemporary way that avoids superfluous details that will age badly. The design also takes into consideration the factor of product integrity and how it will age in use. We avoid short term fashion-led colours or patterns or even functions wherever possible. We want to create products that will hold their appeal for a lifetime and have the chance of becoming antiques of the future. black-blum.com A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

B A N D Absolutely quizzes architect Massimo Minale about doorknobs, light switches and motorbikes Words P E N D L E H A R T E
Buster + Punch was a new venture for you, with an industrial feel. How did it come about? I founded Buster + Punch in 2013 out of my garage in Shoreditch. Up until then I had worked for many years as an architect and industrial designer. In designing so many incredible interiors for most of London’s skyline, I was particularly frustrated at the lack of choice when it came to interior fittings and finishing details, so I set about creating them myself. In contrast, by night I would make custom motorbikes, packed with beautiful solid metal details and this is when the penny dropped and Buster + Punch was born.
The range spans motorbikes and light switches, alongside doorknobs. What is the connection? Is it fuelled by your personal style? I have been lucky enough to make custom motorbikes for some of London’s most notorious rockstars and fashion designers and knowing that I was also an Architect, the same clientele asked me to make slower objects for their homes. It has been this contrast between ordinary type home fittings (light switches, door knobs etc) and a very exciting lifestyle (motorbikes, sub-cultures etc) which has fuelled both my design style and my brand. As a designer I am constantly inspired by London’s fashion, music and sub-culture scene and when injected into functional home fittings, creates a very unexpected and compelling product offering to a once ‘sleepy’ product sector. We have an amazing fan base, which exists through the innovation we put into our products, the lifestyle content that surrounds them and our ability to produce the unexpected and this is why when you go to our website you will see motorbikes mixed in with light switches, door knobs and raps videos. How would you describe your style? My personal style is somewhere between Alexander McQueen and the Queen. I love tradition and decoration,

The form of my designs are always born out of the function and I will always design from the inside out – ie. the engineering joints of a chair I design will dictate the final look of that chair and not the other way around. This is almost certainly a hangover of being an architect before an industrial designer. My style is always constantly changing and this is deeply connected to the manufacturing processes that I am obsessed with at the time – currently sand-casting. Your background is in architecture. Tell us about your career. Art and design has run in my family for years and my dad owned a notorious branding agency in the 60s and 70s that designed everything from the Armani eagle to Gucci’s iconic double ‘G’s’. Waking up as a seven year-old to find Giorgio Armani drinking coffee in your kitchen usually means your future is written in the stars. I have always had a passion for design and engineering and sensibly chose to study architecture at Cambridge and then London’s Bartlett school. I loved architecture and after graduating, completed an internship at Zaha Hadid before working at Foster + Partners and later Richard Rogers where I worked on projects including the Gherkin, One Hyde Park and the Leadenhall Building. I then set off on my own path and started
What is the significance of ‘home fashion’? I have worked and loved the interiors industry for over 20 years now and prior to, say, five years ago, could only ever describe it as ‘sleepy’ at best. I have always looked over my shoulder at the fashion industry as a constant source of influence, excitement and where I would love to drag the interiors industry. When I started Buster + Punch, I would describe us as a ‘home fashion’ label to constantly remind myself that this is where I want us to be. We make home products but operate like a fashion brand, by this I mean that we constantly surround our products with an exciting lifestyle piece to try and make it as compelling for a customer to buy a door handle as it would be a luxury handbag, we want you to feel the same excitement.

“I believe it is the functional fittings that make the biggest impact ” What was the first product for Buster + Punch? The first product I designed for Buster + Punch was actually the Rockstar Bar, a home whisky bar that was initially made for one of the Rolling Stones, but we later launched it as a standard product. Interestingly the part of the bar that everyone loved the most where to two brass handles positioned on the doors, we later launched these as standalone kitchen handles, and this was when the brand really took off and the concept of compelling ‘ordinary’ home fittings was born. Many of your products focus on finishing touches. What effect do beautiful switches and handles have on the finished product? Traditionally designers and home owners have been more interested in the larger pieces of furniture and lighting when designing a space – the sofa, chandelier or bed. I have always believed that it is the functional fittings that you touch every day that will ultimately make the biggest impact to how you feel about your home. For example, on average you touch your light switch eight times a day and the door handle to the kitchen 22 times. If that light switch and door handle are made of cheap metal and light under touch, your perception would be that the house was also poorly built. If that light switch or door handle is made from solid metal with a diamond-cut knurling texture, it will feel cold and heavy under touch, which is very satisfying and automatically makes you think the whole space is well put together. When I design an interior space, I put the initial effort towards all the
home fittings and lighting products, as these will make the biggest impact to a space. Larger pieces of furniture are important but can be added over time. What’s next? In a nutshell – dog collars, a new exciting lighting collection, a bathroom fittings range, a collaboration with American musician Travis Barker and a gold-plated motorbike helmet. Just another day in the life of Buster + Punch.

otte Fynboe is the founder of family lifestyle brand OYOY Living Design. She launched the business straight out of design school in 2012 and some of her very first pieces are still part of the collection. Playfulness meets simplicity and functionality in her design aesthetic and much of Lotte’s inspiration comes from her childhood memories. Here, the mama-of-two invites us to take a tour of her magical holiday home on the Danish West Coast...

How did you come to buy your holiday house and what drew you to it? A I have a passion for the raw brutalism architecture from the ‘50s and up to the early ‘70s where functionality is in focus, the light fantastic and everything unnecessary is gone. The first time I saw the holiday house I was sure it was perfect. I just love the way the house is divided in two with a yard between the two sections. The perfect place for outdoor living with a location close to the sea and with surroundings of the most beautiful nature. What was it like when you bought it and did you do any renovation work? The holiday house has not undergone a major transformation but we have added our own furniture and interior and painted a bit to make it appear as original as possible. As the house is not that big, we are planning a major renovation in the same architecture as the original, which will be completed spring 2021. What was your decorating vision and where did you look to for inspiration? The house must invite and encourage relaxation whilst remaining calm with functional simple items

that are usable. It must be a place totally relaxed with a cosy atmosphere where you want to stay. The colours and materials must be natural, clean and make you feel good. What have you done to your children’s rooms? They are quite small rooms but again they are cosy and relaxed with room for creativity and at the same time set up to be together as a family when we are in the house. How have you incorporated OYOY designs into the house and do you have any favourite pieces? The summer house is of course decorated everywhere with interior items, tableware, lighting and small furniture from OYOY Living Design throughout the kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms and living space as well as older Danish furniture and lamp classics.
And finally, how do you create a sense of hygge? Is there a room that you gather as a family the most in? There must be room for everyone and everything in the room must be used and worn so you can see people living there. As a family we gather a lot in the kitchen around good food and as soon as the weather is good it is in the yard between the two houses which is our favourite place to spend time together. @oyoylivingdesign @lottefynboe oyoylivingdesign.co.uk
Being a designer, is there a temptation to change things all the time? Now that I work with design every day where we are constantly developing new products, I need to make sure I am not constantly remodelling. It is important to me that I am personally surrounded A B S O L U T E LY. LO N D O N

KIDS & EDUCATION • FOCUS
to be human, and to live our lives well. Advances in technology will mean that our children’s lives will probably be unrecognisable from our own. We must equip them with the intellectual dexterity to understand and adapt to that which is new, and the moral strength to make good decisions which are of benefit to themselves and society. Young people with these attributes will indeed have confidence for life. Q Can you tell us about one pivotal
moment from your career?
A I utterly loved mathematics as
soon as I started learning it and always knew I would go on to teach. My earliest memories of maths are of my primary days, when I would return home from school and beg my father, a university lecturer, to write sums for me to solve for pleasure! Mathematics continues to bring me satisfaction and teaching it has been a privilege.
KATHY CREWE-READ The new Head of Bishop’s Stortford College on her educational background and philosophy
Q What is your background? A I joined Bishop’s Stortford
College in September 2020 from Wolverhampton Grammar School, where I had been Head since 2013. Prior to that I was Deputy Head at The King’s School, Chester. My background is as a teacher of mathematics and I’m also a school inspector with the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Q What excites you most
about your new role at Bishop’s Stortford College? A I was drawn to Bishop’s Stortford College primarily by its reputation for unpretentious excellence; I have been impressed by the academic results and facilities for some time. As I get
to know the College community more, I find I like its warmth and openness very much, too. The young people in our schools are the next generation of entrepreneurs, leaders and parents – the future of the world will lie in their hands – I find that extremely exciting. Q What is your academic
philosophy? A and so influence the courses of their own, and others’, lives for the better. Head teachers are in the unique position of creating an atmosphere in which such learning can take place. I find that compelling work. In a world that is changing rapidly for a variety of reasons, the most important calling for us all is to understand what it means
“Education must equip young people with the wherewithal to make wise choices ”
Q What is Bishop’s Stortford
College’s approach and what sets it apart? A The College takes pride in offering breadth and balance, an approach designed to ensure all-round growth – academically, morally, spiritually, ethically and creatively. At its heart though is community – a community of pupils, staff and parents who collectively strive for excellence in all they do, supporting each other along the way. It’s a lovely place to be. Q What makes a great student? A A great student is one who feeds
their intellectual curiosity, who is genuinely interested in knowing more, not just about their academic subjects but about the world around them and life in general. That willingness to learn – to understand more and to find answers to questions – makes for a fascinating individual, as well as a great student. Q From your experience, what
makes a great school environment?
A A great school environment is
about more than just well-equipped buildings and great teaching facilities. It is about the people who teach and inspire our young people, who are passionate about their subject and dedicated to sharing their knowledge. It’s also about the outside spaces, fresh air and nature, that will balance time spent in the classroom. A child who is excited and interested to learn and nurtured through their education will develop confidence for life A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

his visually appealing book brings one of the world’s most recognised scientific concepts to life for a young audience. Exploring the Elements is a comprehensive and thought-provoking introduction to the periodic table for budding boffins and designers alike, helping young readers to learn about the components that make up the universe. Thomas seamlessly brings chemistry to inquisitive young minds, also making challenging scientific concepts both relatable and compelling.
Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright! Selected by Fiona Waters NOSY CROW, £25
This wonderful book follows on from Nosy Crow's smash-hit nature anthology. Child pleasers abound and, from the classic title poem by William Blake to Ogden Nash's 'The Ant', this selection celebrates the breadth of
the animal kingdom. There's a range of poetic forms and talents, including Inuit songs, haiku and a Dinka poem about a magnificent bull. Britta Teckentrup's illustrations bring this poetic landscape to life, making it a lavish, read-out-loud treasure to return to time and again.

WHAT TO EAT THE HOTEL
O
verlooking grassy Queen Square and a ten minute walk from Bath Spa train station, Francis Hotel couldn’t be in a more fantastic location — all the major sights are a short stroll away. The hotel’s grand facade is characteristically Georgian and made from Bath Stone, limestone that covers the entire city in a honeyed hue. Inside, decor draws on the Regency period but with a stylish twist, combining period features with modern amenities. Rooms are luxurious (elegant mirrors, poster beds and floor-toceiling windows) yet quirky, colourful and full of character, decorated with art inspired by Bath’s history, from Romanstyle artefacts to illustrations of Georgian fashion.
THE HISTORY
Romans as a spa, creating the famous Roman Bathhouse that visitors can tour today. Bath became fashionable once again during the Georgian period, when wealthy families would visit to ‘take the waters’ and attend high-society balls, card games and concerts.
THINGS TO DO
A
trip to the city wouldn’t be complete without a tour of the Roman Baths. While you can’t take a dip, there are free audio guides which are well worth a listen as you explore. Nearby is Bath Abbey, a spectacular former Benedictine monastery set in
weekend
a bustling square with street performers. Then walk over to the Royal Crescent and the Circus, two wonderful examples of Georgian architecture from the late 1700s. If the weather is good and you fancy venturing further afield, the Bath Skyline is a National Trust route that takes you uphill and in a loop around town. It’s a good three to four hour walk through woodland, fields and country lanes, perfect for viewing Bath’s beauty from above and working up an appetite.

Bath has plenty to offer in terms of restaurants, from cosy cafés to fine dining. Sotto Sotto is an authentic Italian in a stone cellar just moments from the Roman Baths. For something more upmarket, head to The Circus, where innovative yet comforting European dishes are served with an excellent wine list, before ending the evening with cocktails at Circo Cellar. Bath is also known for its tea rooms and Sally Lunn is one of the oldest, established in 1680. The treats don’t stop there — for some proper west country fudge, visit The Fudge Kitchen where they serve every flavour imaginable, from salted caramel to lemon cheesecake, and even make the sticky sweet right in front of you.

f you want a rustic and authentic home from home for exploring Chianti (or, as it's fondly known by visitors and locals alike, 'Chiantishire'), Villa Cignano ticks all boxes. This traditional stone-built villa has views to die for, an infinity pool at the end of the garden, a choice of barbecues and plenty of space to spread out and live the dream of rustic Tuscan life, even though it's just for one week. The emphasis here is on cosy – homely, not precious – with cool stone floors and simple but comfortable furnishings. There’s a huge table just made for family gettogethers, well-loved sofa and easy chairs and a useful stack of local guidebooks on the antique dresser. The kitchen is a proper functioning space, with everything you need to rustle up both simple family meals and feasts. We are a party of four (although there's space for two more when the downstairs level is opened up) and with two double bedrooms and two bathrooms all on one level, there is room to spread out and still keep tabs on everyone. Having been hopeless enough to forget to pre-order shopping supplies and then miss the supermarket after a travel delay, we are delighted to arrive and find breakfast supplies. Better still, there's also a supper of homemade pasta bake
ready to warm and plenty of delicious local crusty bread and a bottle of wine. As we dine around the huge table on this most welcome late-night meal, we can’t get over how thoughtful our villa hosts Gianni and Rossana have been. It turns out to be the first of many hospitable touches. Waking early the next morning, nothing quite prepares us for the delights of the terrace. The villa sits at the brow of a hill in one of the most unspoilt and rural parts of Chianti – you will never tire of the views from the breakfast table. From the shaded terrace outside the house we look out over a vista dotted with olive groves. Traditional stone houses are tucked away in neighbouring hills and through the trees to the right of the house we can even glimpse the outskirts of Siena, some ten miles away. We have a choice of places to lounge – there’s this terrace, a shaded loggia by the infinity pool and a third lounging area offering views to the vineyard next door. The villa has been painstakingly restored, maintaining its authentic thick stone walls and traditional shuttered windows, so cool in the day and cosy at night, while the gardens offer plenty of space for junior explorers to let off steam. The one golden rule here is to always keep the gates at the top of the private drive shut – while nearly all nature is A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

allowed free rein, wild boar are not. The boar’s head on the wall of the living room is a daily reminder that they have very large tusks that can grub through a garden in no time at all. There’s plenty of more welcome wildlife in the garden – even a cuckoo who serenades us from the same tree at every breakfast. The children are fascinated by tiny lizards that sunbathe on the old stone walls and dart into the bushes whenever we pass by. We stock up on essential supplies from the tiny but picturesque local village Vagliagli, as well as making a couple of forays to the exceptionally well-stocked supermarket on the outskirts of Siena. This turns into a week of slow food without tears – simple salads from the divine local produce and plenty of space to flex those barbecue muscles. Gianni and Rossana are on hand if needed with advice on everything from the best local butcher (Mr Cesare) to the finest local wineries. We are even urged to pick the rosemary that grows with abandon in the rocks and the fennel that pops up in the lawn if we want authentic local flavours for our barbecues. Our hosts live in a property down the hillside and are extraordinarily welcoming to us all – but children are their most precious guests, of all so we never worry that ours are making a noise as they romp round our garden. Sightseeing in this quarter of Tuscany is always going to be a slow and leisurely
affair – the roads demand it anyway, but with one sometimes-car-sick child in the party we make frequent stops. We head off in our rental car, usually with no particular schedule. Part of the fun of exploring is getting a little lost and this is the place to do it as it’s jam-packed with beautiful villages, picturesque churches and castles and photogenic views. Castellina in Chianti turns out to be a highlight – with mighty fortifications that are fascinating to explore. The city of Siena is a manageable size and a gorgeous spot where we while away a happy ice cream-fuelled afternoon. Tuscany Now & More had helpfully supplied a guide to 43 must-see towns and villages in the locality, but we find the thought of sitting on our sunny terrace way too alluring to
manage more than a handful on the list. On one evening, Tuscany Now & More supply an in-villa chef and we have a fantastic and crowd-pleasing meal of panzanella salad, followed by Pici all'aglione (a rustic tomato and garlic sauce with hand-rolled pici pasta from Siena). Main course is perfect fried chicken with courgette pies and the finale is generous portions of the most exquisite homemade ice cream. Like all the meals you will eat in this part of the world, our chefprepared dinner relies on a few simple but exceptional ingredients (tomatoes here are something else) lovingly prepared. An adults-only pleasure is our wine tasting, also booked through Tuscany Now & More and an opportunity to explore some of the treasures from the abundant regional wineries. Our Master of Wine Valentina Mazzetti is a brilliant communicator and she teaches us more in three hours than I thought possible. Assessing the ‘legs’ of wine is a most pleasant way to spend a long and balmy evening on our terrace while the children sleep soundly after a happy day of playing in the mellow Chianti sunshine.

ll too often, it’s only when you try to make a claim that you discover your household insurance may not be quite what it seems. Already feeling sad about the loss of a precious watch or damage to an antique cabinet, the situation is made even worse when you find out that your insurance policy will not provide a like-for-like replacement or compensate you for restoration and any subsequent depreciation. What seemed like good value at the time has turned out to be worthless. This is where speaking to a specialist insurance broker before you take out a policy can make all the difference. An independent insurance broker like Smith Greenfield knows
the importance of not just listing items requiring insurance but also understanding how these items are enjoyed by their owners. For example, many of our clients have items of jewellery they always travel with. Often, a standard household insurance policy will only provide cover for these items at a single address. An insurance broker like Smith Greenfield can provide policies without restrictive clauses so that our clients have peace of mind when they go away for weekends or spend time at their other homes. In addition, a specialist insurance broker can help you with inventories and regular valuations, making sure that the sums insured are up to date. Over recent months, many of us have been working from home, setting up offices and acquiring new technology. We would strongly

advise checking that these additional items are covered by your insurance policy and to discuss any concerns with your insurance broker. And, if you are building a new home office or have building work taking place at home, such as an extension or conversion, make sure that this does not affect your insurance cover. Some policies are not valid during building projects. We also recommend ensuring that the rebuild cost of your home is regularly appraised, to avoid the heartache of discovering that your insurance cover is insufficient after a fire or other serious damage. If you are the owner of a higher value home and have higher value household contents, it is even more important that you seek the advice of an experienced broker. It is likely that you will be best served by a specialist insurance policy that can be tailored to cover your bespoke needs. At Smith Greenfield we only work with ‘A’ rated insurers who are able to do this, and our expert advisers act with discretion at all times. We believe that, in the event of a claim, there should be no unwelcome surprises. When working with an insurance broker, an expert will manage this process. Our aim is to bring you peace of mind.

The Acorn Group expansion resumes, with the opening of their Strood office
R
enowned South East London and Kent estate agency, The Acorn Group, reignites its growth strategy with the opening of a brand new office in the heart of Strood. The Group, which prides itself on being at the leading edge of property marketing, is set to shake things up in the area. They offer the latest innovations in digital marketing including their bespoke AcornIntel social media platform, alongside their unique 37 linked branch network infrastructure, to provide a genuinely different offering to that of their competitors. Coronavirus had put a temporary
halt to The Acorn Group’s expansion along the North Kent corridor which had seen them open 8 new offices since 2018. However, with the launch of their Strood office, these plans now seem very much back in play. "In recent years, we'd seen a growing demand from sellers looking to move further out of London towards Ebbsfleet, Gravesham, and Medway," said Neil Louth, Group MD. "Medway in particular, has had longstanding regeneration plans which have resulted in growth and transformation. In the early months of 2020 though, it was clear that the pandemic and the resulting lockdown would turn everything upside down.” Despite the lockdown, the
“This is The Acorn Group's 37th branch” Group continued preparations for Strood, with key staff who were able to work from home, and as of September 2020, the new 3,000 sqft office in the centre of Strood is now finally open. "This is the result of many months of hard work and planning," said Rob Sargent, Acorn Group CEO. "We are strong believers in the high-street model, and our airy, well-spaced office is designed to be Covid-secure for the safety of both our staff, and our clients. If anything, the events of 2020 have increased this migratory demand as homeowners and tenants, who have witnessed the perceived shortcomings of urban living, look to find a home with more space, inside and out.” "Our new Strood office will be run by Senior Manager, Scott Fletcher, who is also a local resident and takes the helm of The Acorn Group’s 37th branch. With its size and prominent high street position, Strood will become a satellite head-office, offering a full range of propertyrelated services and continuing the philosophy of providing our clients with a truly one-stop-shop for all their family’s property requirements. It will also be a springboard to opening several new offices in the surrounding areas in the coming months." A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N
