DATE NIGHT Our picks for Valentine's Day page 42

F

Summer in the Austrian mountains page 66

ebruary is widely agreed to be the most dismal of all months. It's dark, it's cold, there's no fun to be had. And then there's Valentine's Day, which can go either way. It can cheer us up or it can make us feel worse. A bottle of pink fizz, an earring or a little chocolate heart can sometimes be enough to renew one's faith in humanity, while the absence of these things can, on a bad day, be devastating. Still, we are featuring lots of delightful pink presents in these pages, along with other joyous things. There's the Fashion & Textile Museum's new exhibition, opening this month, which focuses on London in the 1960s, looking at fashion, design and culture with a large focus on Terence Conran and Mary Quant. We're hoping for an invitation to the opening party, which is rumoured to be fancy dress. Interiors-wise we admire Laura Fulmine's small but perfectly formed apartment, and Yoko Kloeden's design for the ultimate family home. Enjoy February.

S

winging London: A Lifestyle Revolution presents the fashion, design and art of the Chelsea Set, a group of radical young architects, designers, photographers and artists who were redefining the concept of youth and challenging the established order in 1950s London. At the forefront of this group of young revolutionaries were Mary Quant and Terence Conran. Spanning the period from 1952 – 1977, the exhibition includes fashion, textiles, furniture, lighting, homewares, ceramics and ephemera, exploring not only the style but the socio-economic importance of this transformative period. Key pieces include rare and early examples of designs by Conran and Quant, plus the avantgarde artists, designers and intellectuals who worked alongside them, such as designers Bernard and Laura Ashley, sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi and artist and photographer Nigel Henderson. PVC coats, OP Art and Space Age dresses by Mary Quant are seen alongside the early smocks, textile designs and dresses of Laura and Bernard Ashley and the modern wicker, steel and glass furniture of Terence Conran. The exhibition also includes the textiles, ceramics and furniture of Eduardo Paolozzi and Nigel Henderson, who were founding members of the Independent Group and together created innovative designs under their company, Hammer Prints, set up in 1954. The exhibition spotlights not only the design of the period, but also the creation of trailblazing shopping experiences from Mary Quant’s rebellious London boutique ‘Bazaar’ (opened in 1955) to Terence Conran’s Habitat (opened in 1964). These shops were not just about

Mary Quant by Vic Singh, c.1961. Courtesy of a Private Collection.

designing for a new youth generation, but also promoting a new way of shopping and living. With Bazaar, Quant irreversibly altered the traditional approach to fashion design and retailing and outraged the all-powerful French fashion establishment. With Habitat, Conran created a retail environment that was a total work of art; ‘a Gesamntkunstwerk’, combining the theatre of The Chelsea Set’s London, with the relatively new phenomenon of ‘serve yourself’, supermarket-style shopping. The influence of France (Conran first visited in 1953) can be seen in Conran’s informal, light and bright styling, with merchandise piled high, reminiscent of

the hustle and bustle of a colourful street market. Early designs by Quant for Bazaar are plain, unadorned and unstructured; simple pinafores with dropped waistlines often worn with coloured stockings. A remarkable cotton, red and white Broderie Anglaise lounging ensemble by Quant (1955/56), will be shown alongside a range of furniture, fabrics, enamelware and ephemera from the first days of Habitat. In order to spotlight not just the fashion, but the lifestyle and design of the time, Swinging London: A Lifestyle Revolution is presented in the form of detailed tableaus. During the mid 1950s, the increasing availability of inexpensive foreign package holidays and of films with exotic European settings inspired the eruption of coffee bars, bistros and other such distinctly continental establishments on British high streets. Throughout the exhibition, individual sets are inspired by these new and exciting continental trends, utilising fashion, furniture, textiles, ceramics and more to highlight how changes in social attitude intertwined with new ways of shopping, to create the designs that are now synonymous with 1960s life. There’s also an insight into the lesserknown early work of Laura and Bernard Ashley, whose ideas were influencing culture long before their iconic florals. Bernard Ashley’s textile design, Jazz Players, was probably the first example of a ‘Pop’ textile, whilst Laura’s simple hardwearing striped smocks, aprons and the easy to wear ‘basic dress’ would go on to become design classics. Furnishing fabrics by Laura and Bernard Ashley will be shown alongside ceramics by W.R Midwinter, jewellery by Wendy Ramshaw, textiles by David Whitehead, lighting by Bernard Schottlander, untouched makeup palettes and accessories by Mary Quant and myriad other ephemera, which will together create a comprehensive insight into the period.

SWINGING LONDON A Lifestyle Revolution runs from 8 February to 2 June at the Fashion and Textile Museum, 83 Bermondsey Street, SE1 ftmlondon.org

Hydrafacial treatment

t’s a chilly evening and I’m visiting the Waterhouse Young clinic to try their signature Hydrafacial treatment. A firm favourite with celebrities and skin care professionals, it is described as a non-invasive resurfacing treatment, and can be used for treating everything from fine lines to acne-prone skin, as well as general skin rejuvenation. For me, it’s a serious case of winter and insomnia-induced dullness. After a quick cleanse to remove makeup, the practitioner uses a hand-piece with a series of HydroPeel tips, which work together to remove dead skin cells and impurities, while infusing it with cleansing, hydrating and moisturising serums. This is followed by a light glycolic and salicylic acid peel, which is applied to give a deeper exfoliation and rejuvenation. The sensation is a light tingling, but by no means painful. Already feeling throughly refreshed, the final part of the treatment involves placing red LED light onto the skin to boost circulation, reduce redness and irritation, and to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Blue LED light is also used in particular areas of congestion to combat bacteria. Luckily, there is zero downtime, so I leave the clinic straight away - just bear in mind that there might be a small amount of redness, however this fades after about 30 minutes. For optimum results, I'm advised a six-week course, however I see a difference after one treatment. My complexion looks smoother and brighter and pigmentation has faded considerably. Finn Dental Specialists talk us through the procedure of dental implants

N

othing boosts confidence like a winning smile, which means that missing teeth can have a detrimental impact on a person’s self esteem. Sadly, teeth can be lost for several reasons such as accidental trauma or tooth decay. If you are suffering from the likes, your dentist may suggest dental implants. These are longlasting prosthetic replacements for missing teeth, consisting of a titanium screw which is placed into the jawbone, an attachment called an abutment which connects the implant to the artificial tooth, and a crown. Dental implants can be a highly realistic and

permanent solution for replacement of one or more missing teeth. They function and look like natural teeth and can even be used to replace teeth that have been missing for a long time. Every implant placement is different and the entire process of placing an implant can take several months. The process is normally made up of the following stages:

C O N S U LTAT I O N A N D P R E PA R AT I O N

Whilst a general dentist can place implants, many people choose to see a specialist dentist due to their expertise in implant placement. The specialist conducts a thorough examination which includes x-rays

Whilst implant placement is a surgical procedure, it can be performed at the dental practice. The gum is cut and the implant is screwed into the jawbone. The gum is then stitched back up. It normally takes a couple of hours to place each implant, but this can vary from case to case. The implant is then left to heal. During this time the bone heals and the implant fuses into the bone. A temporary tooth or teeth can be made for you to wear while the implant heals if necessary, so you will never need to be without teeth.

ABUTMENT FIT

In some cases, a further appointment is required for the abutment to be fitted to the implant screw, which is again accessed through the gum.

C R OW N F I T

This is the part of the process that you’ve been waiting for. The crown, which has been made to your exact requirements by a specialist laboratory, is fitted onto the abutment. You have your new smile. Implants can last a lifetime, but they do require aftercare. You will need to take care of them (just like normal teeth) by practising good oral hygiene habits and visiting your hygienist for professional cleaning. You should also expect to visit the person who placed the implant annually to check all is well. Implants are a well-established treatment which have the power to transform people’s lives. A specialist dentist is ideally placed to tell you if you are a suitable candidate for implants so why not book an appointment today. PERFUME

HOT STUFF Olfactory winter warmers B y M I C H A E L D O N OVA N

F

ebruary is notoriously our coldest month and, as I write, it is predicted that the ‘Beast From The East’ will return to British shores. So to warm you up and leave your skin and nose aglow I thought it would be appropriate to suggest a collection of olfactory winter warmers. From woods and spices to amber-resinous scents, each and every one of these cosy fragrances will envelope you in a comforting, security blanket, adding an extra layer of defence against harsh winter chills. One of our best-selling, toasty perfumes is Amber by Laboratory Perfumes. We usually have a waiting list for this one once the temperatures plummet. The fragrance conjures a stroll along the East Anglia coastline, with fresh green notes of the diverse grasses carried by the breeze across the windswept plains of the Fens, adding energy and vitality. The heart, of woods and spices, delivers the gloves and scarf but it is the wool greatcoat of amber that really delivers a sense of rosy wellbeing. Labdanum is one of my favourite winter notes. A sticky resin obtained from a species of the rock rose, it was used in ancient Egypt and is mentioned in the Bible twice. It is also the main ingredient in the Amber perfumes. My favourite incarnation is Grey Labdanum by Abel, a 100% natural fragrance which utilises the dark incense to perfection. Combined with earthy patchouli and clary sage, plus a dash of winter sun in the form of bitter orange at the top, this is a smouldering scent of great quality. Feu Secret by San Franciscan Bruno Fazzolari imagines the secret fire of the alchemists: the elusive scent of iris root smoulders with spice, cedar and smoke in a transformative hidden blaze. Bright, joyful and ardent, this one makes your toes curl in the good way.

Chambre Noir by Olfactive Studio is a sultry and enigmatic fragrance that looks to the shadows for inspiration. Intense and slightly spicy, it's a deep, rich scent, redolent of leather, incense, and patchouli. With a lightly spiced opening of pink peppercorn in the top notes, the floral, smoky heart gently dies away and we are left with a classic base of musk and a striking vanilla accord. It’s daring and naughty - the 'Eyes Wide Shut' of fragrance! We are introducing a new collection called Bon Parfumeur from Paris this month. The range uses what we in the industry call ‘short formulae', which means that they are minimal in terms of the ingredients they use. I think less is more and simplicity can really work. It allows us to recognise and connect with almost all of the notes. 902 from this range uses coffee and armagnac over tobacco and cannelle to create a deliciously gourmand fragrance, it imagines a ski chalet before a roaring fire. The leather of the sofas and the pousse-café blend into a post-piste cloud of privilege and comfort. Berlin Im Winter from Baruti is a stunning scent that captures the energy and effusive welcome of the city. Cassis and mastic oil over iris, plum, frankincense and myrrh are hypnotising and a clever urban collation of whiskey with amber, tonka bean and leather would not be out of place at Soho House. Modern and moving. Finally the Dante-esque Fuoco Infernale or Hell Fire from Linari takes us to the very gates, with an enticing blend of carnation and labdanum, warm cinnamon, herbal marjoram and tar-like birch. A simple heart of bittersweet tonka bean and olibanum descend into a firy pit of spicy gurjan balsam, backed by clean white musk and premium atlas cedar, before meeting opulent ambergris for a luxurious and sophisticated finish. Devilish. February should be about indulgence so wrap yourselves up in a warm and wonderful fragrance - the olfactory equivalent of a toasted crumpet. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

TASTING NOTES

London’s food news and most exciting openings this February By FLORA THOMAS

Wine recommendations for the month By BERRY BROS. AND RUDD

2017 Côtes du Rhône Rouge  £11.45 Made with exclusively organic grapes, the wine displays real purity of dark-berried fruit, with subtle spicy notes and a black-olive twist that is so typical of this region. Its juicy fruit core is wonderfully balanced by refreshing acidity and crunchy, chalky tannins.

2016 Bourgogne Aligoté  £18.50 Pale in colour, this has a steely and mineral nose, offering some green apple aromas and a touch of cream. Ageing in old oak barrels gives a subtle hint of spice and some breadth to the palate, accompanying the precise acidity and chalky finish.

2015 Anthonij Rupert, L'Ormarins, Brut Rosé,  £19.95 Eye-catching faint salmon pink hue. Bubbles rise in a consistent vigorous, lively stream. Gentle berry notes on the nose – strawberry and raspberry with a slight cream and biscuit nuance. The palate is vibrant and lively with crisp berry fruit flavours. BERRY BROS. & RUDD Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant, having traded from the same shop since 1698. Today the company also has offices in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, a Wine School and an exclusive fine wine and dining venue in St James's.

1 Preheat the oven to fan 180°C, fan oven 160°, Gas Mark 4. Grease and line a 23cm square cake tin with baking paper, using a little butter. 2 Melt the remaining butter in a large saucepan over a low heat, without letting it get too hot. Remove from the heat, then add the orange juice and beaten eggs. Reserve the orange zest for the frosting. 3 Sift together the flour, salt, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and ground ginger in a mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar, organic carrots and courgettes, then add the melted mixture and stir together well. 4 Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a fine skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Cool in the tin for 20 minutes, then turn out carefully. Cool completely on a wire rack. 5 Make the frosting by beating the low fat soft cheese, vanilla extract and reserved orange zest together. Spread on top of the cooled cake. Put the grated organic carrot into a frying pan with the sugar and heat gently to melt and caramelise. Cool, then scatter over the cake.

Cook’s tip: Keep the cake refrigerated, though serve at room temperature. You can freeze the cake for up to 2 months without the frosting. Use organic ingredients where possible.

Spiced organic carrot and ginger soup This soup is super-simple to make, with just a few ingredients and three easy steps. Serves 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 600g British organic carrots, peeled and chopped • 1 large onion, chopped • 2 celery sticks, sliced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 5cm piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and grated • 1tsp medium curry powder • 1.2 litres vegetable stock • 100g low fat soft cheese • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 4tbsp low fat plain yogurt

METHOD 1 Put the organic carrots, onion and celery into a large saucepan with the garlic, ginger, curry powder and stock. 2 Bring up to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, for 20-25 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. 3 Blend the soup to a puree using a hand-held stick blender, or transfer to a food processor or blender and whizz until smooth. Add the soft cheese and blend again until it is thoroughly mixed in. Reheat gently, and season to taste. 4 Serve, topped with a swirl of natural yogurt and a little extra black pepper.

Cook’s tip: Cover, cool and refrigerate the soup, using it within 3 days of making it, and re-heating it thoroughly when ready to serve. Use organic ingredients where possible.

Organic carrot, sage and taleggio risotto Creamy and comforting, there’s nothing quite like a delicious risotto! Serves 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 2tbsp olive oil • 400g British organic carrots, peeled and cut into small cubes • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 350g risotto rice (arborio or carnaroli) • 200ml dry white wine • 1 litre hot vegetable stock • 1tbsp chopped fresh sage • 100g Taleggio cheese, cut into small chunks • 30g Parmesan cheese, finely grated • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Sage leaves and grated Parmesan cheese, to garnish

METHOD 1 Heat the oil in a large sauté pan or saucepan and add the organic carrots and onion. Cook gently, stirring often, for 10 minutes. Add the rice and stir over a low heat for 2-3 more minutes, without browning. 2 Add the wine and let it bubble up for a moment or two. Pour in half the stock. Stir well, then cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3 Cook until the rice is tender, gradually adding the remaining stock, and stirring often. This will take a further 10-15 minutes. Check that the rice is done to your liking – it should be soft, with just a hint of ‘bite’. 4 Stir in the sage, Taleggio and grated Parmesan cheese. Check the seasoning, adding a little salt and pepper if needed. Serve, garnished with fresh sage leaves and grated Parmesan cheese, with a little extra black pepper.

Cook’s tip: If you like, serve the risotto with a few torn-up slices of Parma ham scattered over the top. You could use Brie instead of Taleggio cheese. Use organic ingredients where possible.

Oaty organic carrot and oregano muffins These savoury muffins make a tasty home-from-school. Or why not pop one into a packed lunch? Serves 8 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

Glazed organic carrot, feta and red onion tart It’s amazing how much f lavour there is in the not-so-humble organic carrot Serves 6 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 300g British organic carrots, peeled and cut into batons • 2 red onions, sliced • 1tbsp olive oil • 2 sprigs rosemary • 2 sprigs thyme • 500g pack puff pastry • A little flour, for dusting • 1 small egg, beaten with 1tbsp water • 1tbsp balsamic vinegar • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 4tbsp pesto sauce • 100g feta cheese • Rosemary or thyme sprigs, to garnish

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 220°C, fan oven 200°C, Gas Mark 7. 2 Put the organic carrots and onions into a roasting tin and add the olive oil, tossing to coat. Add the herb sprigs and roast for 20 minutes, or until the carrots are tender. 3 Meanwhile, roll out the pastry into a rectangle measuring approximately 35x25cm. Transfer to a lightly greased baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score a border about 3cm from the edges of the pastry, without cutting right through. Brush this border with the beaten egg mixture. 4 Allow the organic carrots and onions to cool, removing the herb sprigs. Stir in the balsamic vinegar with a little salt and pepper and toss together. While the carrots are cooling, bake the pastry for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden. 5 Gently press down the pastry within the border. Spread the pesto sauce over this area, then arrange the roasted carrots and onion on top. Crumble over the feta cheese and bake for a further 5 minutes. Serve, garnished with rosemary or thyme sprigs.

Cook’s tip: Use regular onions if you don’t have red ones. Use organic ingredients where possible.

• 125g butter, melted and cooled slightly • 2tbsp milk • 2 large eggs, beaten • 200g British organic carrots, peeled and grated • 100g wholemeal self-raising flour • 1tsp baking powder • 2tsp dried oregano or mixed dried herbs • 75g porridge oats • 1/2tsp salt

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan oven 160°C, Gas Mark 6. Line a muffin tin with 8 paper muffin cases or squares of baking paper. 2 Mix together the cooled butter, milk and eggs. Stir in the grated organic carrots. 3 In a separate large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, dried herbs, porridge oats and salt. 4 Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, taking care that you don’t over-mix. Share the mixture between the muffin cases and bake for 25-30 minutes, until firm and golden. Cool on a wire rack.

Cook’s tips: The secret of successful muffins is to avoid over-mixing the wet and dry ingredients. Freeze some of the muffins in a freezer bag or box – they will keep for up to 3 months. Use organic ingredients where possible.

“Prawns’ heads arrive intact to squeeze over your plate”

asa do Frango means chicken house. It’s a fitting name for this house-sized chicken restaurant, located a stone’s throw from Borough Market. High ceilings, long, communal dining tables and vibrant plants occupy the light, bright space. The menu is confident and concise: diners here are after the chicken. In a month saturated by veganism it’s comforting not to feel the need to shun meat. The small plates on offer are what you might expect from an Algarveinspired restaurant, but they’re playfully supersized. Giant grilled prawns retain their crunch and come with their juicy heads intact

to squeeze over your plate. The black olive mayonnaise, while not an immediately inviting colour, is divine and balances the hot (very hot) guindilla peppers. I have a penchant for whitebait, and these are some of the best I’ve had, they’re light and airy with a satisfying crunch which only occurs when special care and attention has been paid to both the batter and frying. Our waiter warns us about the colour of the batatas fritas - chips - when we order them: they’re pale, sure, but they’ve been fried twice and taste great. The surprise highlight is the montanheiro (mountain) salad: green and red tomatoes, blow-torched green pepper and dried oregano bring a freshness and splash of colour to the table.

VERDICT Southwark’s answer to piri piri chicken

Butterflied, charcoal-grilled, oregano-scattered free-range chicken is as good as it sounds. We share half a chicken which is enough, but I’d suggest ordering a half each if you’re very hungry. For drinks, go for the vinho verde - it literally means green wine, but translates as young wine, usually released three months after harvesting. It’s dry, citrusy and slightly fizzy; it complements the fried and grilled food well. At Casa do Frango, the pastel de nata are cooked in-house. There are other desserts to choose from, but you’d be mad to turn down the chance to try one of these beautiful little tarts. Utterly delicious, we share one and greedily order a second. Our waiter is keen for us to see the adjoining cocktail bar before we leave. It’s low-lit by old fashioned table lamps and decked out in plush emerald green and ruby red velvet sofas. Monday means it’s closed but we leave Casa do Frango intent on returning midweek to try their cocktails and sit in the glamourous Green Room. CASA DO FRANGO First Floor, 32 Southwark Street, SE1 1TU

and blood orange, or blended with crème fraiche, lemon and horseradish to make a deliciously comforting pâté. Look out for whole, hot-smoked mackerel, sold on the bone; it will have a fuller flavour and the texture is creamier and moister than the vacuum-packed fillets. I’m serving my pâté with chicory, pickled cucumber

Sustainable and delicious, it’s little wonder many chefs list mackerel as their favourite fish

• 350g hot-smoked mackerel fillet • 125g cream cheese • 100g crème fraiche • squeeze lemon • 1 teaspoon finely chopped dill • 3 teaspoons freshly grated horseradish • black pepper

METHOD 1 Pull the fillets from the bone and remove the skin. Carefully remove any remaining bones. 2 Flake three quarters of the fish into a food processor with the cream cheese, crème fraiche and grated horseradish. Whizz until smooth. 3 Add the remaining mackerel and pulse briefly until blended but with some larger flakes of fish still visible. Gently mix in the chopped dill. Season to taste with black pepper and lemon juice. 4 Serve with dressed bitter leaves, pickled cucumber & sourdough crostini. 5 To make the crostini slice the sourdough as thinly as you can, drizzle with olive oil and lightly season with salt. Bake at 180C for 8 minutes then remove to a wire rack to cool. Top tip – just before serving finely grate some fresh horseradish and lemon zest over the dish for an intense lemon and peppery hit.

and sourdough crostini. Chicory - now in peak condition, adds a welcome bitterness, while the acidity from the pickled cucumber helps to cut through the creamy richness of the pâté. The crostini adds texture, giving the dish a satisfying crunch. To make the pickled cucumber, bring 225ml of cider vinegar and 100g of caster sugar to the boil. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon, then add 2 sprigs of dill and a few black peppercorns and leave to cool. Pour the pickling liquor over the cucumber and refrigerate overnight. lain English was conceived by accident 25 years ago when Katie Fontana and her husband Tony Niblock swapped life in the capital for a rural idyll in Suffolk. “We decided to move to Suffolk and take the time out to build our own house, so it was an interesting year of living in a caravan. When it came to the kitchen, I assumed that I’d be able to find something and just buy it. But there was nothing I liked. Everything had twiddly bits or was too look-at-me flashy. In the end I found a local joiner and we did it ourselves.” That might have been the end of the story had it not been for the nudge from a friend to enter the house into a Telegraph competition for the best self-build house in the country. “We came runner up and were later featured in a magazine. People kept calling to ask where we’d got our kitchen. So without thinking things began to take shape.

Plain English is the cognoscenti’s favourite for its honest craftsmanship

I was quite resistant at first; to me, as an interior designer, just doing kitchens seemed quite limited, but Tony insisted.” Twenty-five years on, Plain English is still the cognoscenti’s favourite, its incomparable honest craftsmanship and its spare simplicity outstripping other, slicker, contenders. Plain English Kitchens are so versatile, as at home in country homes as they are in more urban settings. “I think it’s because we’re selling good, honest, non-branded cupboards, so you can dress them up or down. I am very anti-ostentation and I hate this obsession with logos emblazoned everywhere. Historically, kitchens were just functional, which is why I’ve always liked the below-stairs kitchen quarters of stately homes. Ultimately, I like the elemental things in life: marble, slate, wood. I think subconsciously it’s all about stuff that will stand the test of time.” On Fontana’s watch, the likes of pantries and sculleries are afforded their place once more, rescued from the wasteland of upstairs-downstairs period dramas. “In the 1960s, everyone wanted to be so modern and get rid of the larder and you can understand it. They’d all been to the Ideal Home Show! But it’s like a pendulum swinging, now we’re seeing the value in those rooms again.” This brightly coloured kitchen features handcrafted Plain English Spitalfields cupboards with a contemporary Osea island and theatrical woven lighting taking centre stage. The open plan space is perfect for cooking, entertaining and family life. Cupboards are painted in a variety of bright and bold Plain English colours: Starched Apron, Boiled Dishcloth and Pretty Pickle. plainenglishdesign.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

Ballet Shoes is the enduring tale of the determined Fossil sisters, Pauline, Petrova and Posy, who vow to put their family name in the history books. Through Madame Fidolia’s School of Performing Arts, they enter an exciting world full of ups and downs, learning important lessons about life and themselves on the way. Ballet Shoes is filled with inspiring characters, beautiful choreography and is a sure-fire hit for the whole family. HI G H There are few places more beautiful – or more fun – than the Austrian Tyrol in summer. Absolutely takes the family to the mountains Wo r d s P E N D L E H A R T E

hen I tell my Austrian friend proudly that we’re going to the place where they filmed James Bond, I’m expecting her to know exactly where I mean. She doesn’t: “Oh they filmed Bond all over the place.” It’s true that a lot of Austrian ski resorts show off about their 007 connections, but nowhere apart from Sölden has a special Bond museum built at 3,000 metres at the exact location of much of the action in Spectre. And nowhere else has a glass cube structure at its highest peak, housing a restaurant with a Tom Dixon interior and spectacular 360 degree views. For Austria, Sölden is prime Bond territory. But that’s not really why we came. Sölden is an alpine resort in the Tyrol’s Otztal Valley, south of Innsbruck and near the Italian border. Nearby Obergurgl is a popular

ski area for British people, but Sölden, home to the skiing World Cup opener, is more popular with Dutch and German skiiers. In the summer it’s quieter but there’s still a lot to be said for it, and not just the low season rates, the vast beauty of the landscape, the clarity of the air and the enormous range of activities. We are here as a family with two daughters aged 12 and 9 and the family suite at Das Central is perfect: two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a cosy seating area, two balconies. Half-board means breakfast and dinner every day, and they seat you at the same table every time, which instantly makes you feel like a regular. Staff wear traditional dirndls and the buffet breakfasts are as huge and generous as you would imagine. It’s all wooden chaletstyle with a contemporary slant. One of the best things about staying here is that you are automatically issued with a Premium Card for the region, which allows you free or discounted entry to so many things that there’s a weighty booklet to list them all. Ski lifts, swimming pools, mountain bike school, public transport, museums. We pledge to try everything. On day one we turn up bright and early at Bike Republic, the mountain bike centre where we are introduced to an instructor from the Ride On bike school, who promises that we’ll be speeding down the mountain after a bit of gentle practice on the town’s pump track. Her three-year old daughter can do it, she says. We are confident urban cyclists: we’re sure we’ll be fine. The pump track looks small but quickly it becomes clear that in our family at least, fear levels are directly proportional with age. The nine year-old is entirely comfortable with tight hairpin bends and a tilt that leaves her knee perilously close to the ground, while the adults are significantly less comfortable, and A B S O L U T E LY. In our family at least, fear levels are directly proportional with age less nimble. We struggle to get around the track. Still, an hour in and we are ready to take our bikes into the cable car and up: a fortifying plate of dumplings at the middle station’s Tirolerstube prepares us for a steep and bumpy downhill bike ride. Taking our positions: standing up in the saddle, forefingers only on the brakes, knees bent, we hurtle down the path with varying degrees of confidence at speeds that range

from fast to hypersonic, or at least feel that way. We are proud of ourselves Day two: let’s go to Italy. It’s only about 70km from Sölden to Merano but the drive is likely to take more than two hours over the spectacular Timmelsjoch mountain pass. Open only during the snow-free months between April and October, this is one of the world’s most beautiful roads, twisting and turning to reveal ever-more impressive vistas and countless viewpoint stops. In the light of our mountain biking experience we admire all passing cyclists – the ascent looks calf-wrenchingly impossible, the freewheeling descent terrifying. Despite the intense beauty, it is a long drive, especially when you know that you need to be back before the road closes at 8pm. We drive into beautiful Merano, which is German-speaking despite being well into Italy (the South Tyrol retains a strong Austrian identity that defies the border). Finding a lovely public pool, we spend happy hours on the slides and diving boards, enjoying the views of mountains around us. We drive back before the curfew, happy not to have to tackle the mountainous terrain in the dark. There’s some rain the next day so we head to the Aqua Dome, a vast indoor and outdoor swimming world that features heated outdoor pools (rain no problem) as well as a saltwater pool, a pool with a strong current, some amazing waterslides (one, a dark hole, even shows a live broadcast of its current inhabitant on a screen) and lots of indoor sun loungers. But the best watersports activities in the area are to be found at Area 47, a large lake near a rapid river where you can try out all the watersports you’ve ever heard of, as

well as many that you haven’t. So there’s blobbing (hilariously), and canonball, wakeboarding and more slides than we’ve ever seen, some of them improbably high. There’s a slackline across the lake which we happily fall off repeatedly, a climbing wall from which you can fall into the water and a restaurant terrace allowing great views over everything. We spend the whole morning entering and exiting the water by different means before assembling for our rafting afternoon. We are kitted out in full body wetsuits with boots, hats and life vests and given a detailed introductory talk (the instructor is English; most staff here are students who have found the best summer job ever) and we set off down the river, 12 of us all clinging to our paddles (it's a 50 euro fine for each lost one) and shrieking with laughter as we cascade down the river. It’s the most fun we’ve had as a family in a long time (or certainly since mountain biking). We were having so much fun that we’d almost forgotten about James Bond. Our last day dawns misty and significantly cooler: we don layers and head up in the high tech gondola all the way to the top. At 3,000 metres the Ice-Q, the glass structure that so impressed Spectre’s location scouts, is impressive and next to it is a new concrete bunker that’s home to the museum. It’s a high tech exhibit focusing on the history of Bond and the creative feats involved in making the films. Enthusiasts will love it, and it’s accessible for the less obsessed too. So whether you’re a 007 disciple or not, and whether you ski or not, there are many reasons to visit the Otztal.

EXCEPTIONAL VILLAS The Thinking Traveller’s collection of villas in the heart of the Mediterranean features 5-star oases of fully-serviced luxury, beachfront summer houses, gems of contemporary architecture, sumptuous masserie, chic trulli, romantic retreats, and much more. No property enters the collection until Rossella and Huw have seen it for themselves, and only about 1% of the villas offered to the company make it onto their books.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

W

hen Huw and Rossella Beaugié founded The Thinking Traveller in 2002, they did so with two clear aims: to offer a luxury experience that can’t be sourced elsewhere, and to inspire their clients to say, “That was the best holiday we’ve ever had. We’ll be back.” Judging by the company’s success – it has been voted Favourite Villa Rental Company four times (including in 2016, 2017 and 2018) at the prestigious Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Travel Awards – Huw and Rossella’s innovative approach, based on four guiding principles, is fully achieving its aims.

The Thinking Traveller’s team visit and stay at the company’s properties several times a year, experiencing everything that you’ll experience while you’re on holiday. The company’s concierges, meanwhile, are true locals who know the destinations inside out. They have all the right connections and a magical ability to make things happen. You might not need them, but it’s always reassuring to know they’re on hand if you do.

PERSONAL SERVICE The Thinking Traveller’s experts will always go that extra mile to transform your dreams into reality. Excellent listeners, creative thinkers, and resourceful logisticians, they use their first-hand knowledge to give you all the options, suggest possibilities you might not have considered, and conjure up solutions that exceed your brief.

QUALITY THROUGH EXCLUSIVITY Exclusivity is a much misused word in the travel industry. For The Thinking Traveller, it’s a simple concept: the villas are not “shared” with numerous other rental agencies – they are all available exclusively through them. This not only gives clients a truly exclusive experience, but also allows the company to have a hands-on role in quality assurance (something that’s not possible when properties are rented through multiple channels). Exclusivity also allows clients to book online 24/7, whenever it’s most convenient.

GOLDEN COURTYARD Marlborough Road, Royal Arsenal Riverside SE18 Estate Agent: Knight Frank

F

or those looking to own a little slice of history this Grade II listed apartment within the former Woolwich Arsenal, is ideal. The Royal Arsenal Riverside development, by Berkeley, has seen the building of almost 3,000 new homes so far, on the site of the former Woolwich munitions factory and barracks. A number of the original buildings have also been renovated, including Building 36 – which is part of the ‘Golden Courtyard’ of listed storage warehouses from the 1800s. This particular characterful, two bedroom apartment offers 914 sq ft (84.95 sq m) of living space set across the ground and first floors of the building. It benefits from well-preserved and tastefully restored original features; such as exposed brickwork, oak beams,

large industrial windows and double height ceilings. On the ground floor, there is a bright, open plan reception/dining space, which leads onto the kitchen, and a family bathroom near the front door. The upper floor holds the two, well-sized bedrooms, with the master having an en-suite shower room. The second bedroom is the larger and is set in mezzanine over the living space. The southerly aspect of the flat offers views towards Wellington Park and allows an abundance of natural light to flood the rooms; with the high ceilings adding to the feeling of ample space and comfort. Residents of Building 36 have access to the 24-hour concierge service and residents' only gymnasium. The property also comes with an allocated parking space. Within Royal Arsenal Riverside,

“the flat offers views towards Wellington Park and allows an abundance of natural light" you will find a choice of locations to eat and drink – including The Guard House, The Dial Arch and Italian restaurant, Congusto. Travel to and from central London is already very easy via the DLR, Mainline station and Thames Clipper, but will soon be made even simpler with the arrival of the Woolwich Crossrail station later on this year. Woolwich Arsenal to Bond Street will take only 22 minutes! The local high street is currently undergoing a regeneration, with remaining listed buildings getting a spruce up and new amenities built. There is already landscape planting, seating areas and a large digital media display in General Gordon Square, as well as up-andcoming craft breweries, a successful bi-weekly Farmers Market and a Street Feast food hall. Work has also started on the Woolwich ‘creative district’ – which will give the area a range of theatre spaces, artist studios and community spaces within the next few years. Guide Price: £515,000. TURN UP FOR THE BOOKS The Acorn Book Club is a new CSR initiative from The Acorn Group which aims to ensure young people have free access to a wide range of books.

T

he Acorn Group have been supporting and sponsoring local schools, charities and communities for a number of years. Their hands-on staff can often be found helping set up community events, serving food at the Manna Centre in SE1, or taking part in their ‘Acorn Bake Off’ to raise money for local causes, all whilst running one of London’s leading independent estate agencies. However, in 2018 the Group’s Corporate and Social Responsibility team embarked on a project quite unlike any other. A chance meeting between Acorn’s CEO Rob Sargent and Jo Chandler, Head of Governors at St Saviour’s School, sparked the beginning of something special, and when Jo explained how funding reforms meant that the school were

unable to develop under-utilised spaces within the building, Rob was certain he wanted to help. Following a visit to St Saviour’s, Rob and the Acorn CSR team offered to refurbish their uninspiring library facility and transform it into a colourful, engaging and vibrant space to learn. Both the staff and students were involved in the creative design, and thousands of brilliant books were donated by the public to stock the new space. Lewisham Mayor Damien Egan, who officially opened the new library, said of the project: “This is exactly the kind of investment that we need more of. The help that it will give young people should not be underestimated.” Having been blown away by both the quality and quantity of books donated, The Acorn Group decided to develop the book collection idea

MAYOR OF LEWISHAM DAMIEN EGAN HELPING ST SAVIOUR’S STUDENTS PICK THEIR FAVOURITE BOOK.

“The ABC is now the primary focus of the property firm’s charitable giving and CSR work" into an ongoing initiative, and at the end of 2018 the Acorn Book Club launched. Run by Emma Fox, CSR Manager, the Acorn Book Club (or ABC) works with the public, their staff and clients throughout The Acorn Group to ensure pre-loved children’s books get into the hands of local schools, hospices and organisations that do not have sufficient funding to purchase them from new. Donations are accepted at any Acorn, Langford Russell or John Payne office within the Group’s extensive London and Kent branch network. These books are then redistributed locally, with the aim of promoting a life-long love and passion for reading. The ABC is now the primary focus of the property firm’s charitable giving and CSR work. With five new offices opened in 2018 and two already set for 2019, there’s no doubt the Group’s reach is significant. If you require any further information please visit acornbookclub.co.uk, or to express an interest in a donation of books, please contact Emma Fox emma.fox@acornbookclub.co.uk
