LETTER

All of us who started this year with so many high hopes and dreams are now holding on to the thought that love conquers all...

T

his has become the weddings theme of the year, with so many plans postponed and couples left wondering when their day will dawn. The stars will realign and love will prevail – and that's what has inspired our New Romantic issue. Our magical shoot at Country House Weddings' Bourton Hall from page 16 (a dead ringer for Tuscany although it's in romantic Shakespeare country) sets the tone for an issue which is all about love, dreams and happy endings. The beautiful gowns by Rosa Clará couldn't be more appropriate in capturing the magic we are all imagining. We are here with you in spirit and in life – our wonderful Venues Editor Isabella Eckett has postponed, just like so many other brides – and this issue is packed with ideas to help you make your beautiful dreams reality. Our Venues Hot List 2020 (from page 97) showcases the latest and greatest locations, every one visited and hand-picked by our team. All that plus fashion inspiration, planning insights and travel ideas for the ultimate honeymoon escape after your celebration. Love from all of us at Absolutely Weddings – keep the faith and keep planning for your perfect day.

Celebrating 25 brilliant years dressing brides – and now with a store in London, Rosa Clará remains a go-to for the ultimate dress. We speak to Rosa Clará Pallarès to find out what makes the brand unique Interview LIBBY NORMAN

Q You are celebrating 25 years at the forefront of bridal fashion When you look back, what have been the biggest changes and what things remain the same? A There have been many changes. The online world has made fashion available to many people and this was unthinkable a few years ago. Now brides have a culture in fashion that did not exist before. However, the main change is in the age. When we started, the typical bride was 23 or 24 years old at most. They were girls who came to try on dresses accompanied by their family, which greatly influenced them. Today, brides get married from the age of 30 – they know exactly what they want and make decisions for themselves.

Q While seasonal trends may shift, I've often heard it said that you can always spot a Rosa Clará gown. How would you describe the 'signature' of your brand? A A wedding dress has to stand the test of time, it must have a classic point, even if it innovates in neckline or details. Our collections have an impeccable pattern; we use the best fabrics and innovation is constant. Design, craftsmanship and quality are the DNA of the brand. Q Rosa Clará has distinct collections to match different styles of bride – could you outline the key design elements of the four collections? A Modern architecture inspires the Rosa

Clará Couture collection, with designs that keep to its 'less is more' concept. Simple lines, and exceptional fabrics, such as silk satin, crepe, georgette, Italian cloque and flocked plumetti tulle, define a sophisticated and romantic collection. The Rosa Clará line combines minimalism and sensuality in contemporary dresses that enhance the silhouette and faithfully represent the essence of the brand. Ethereal and delicate, Rosa Clará Soft also does not forget sensuality through muslin silk dresses with slits in the skirt. For a wedding in nature, Rosa Clará Bohème offers designs with artisanal details and Provencal lace bodies that represent a luxurious and delicate boho style – it's a Rosa Clará style of boho.

Q You also have Rosa Clarรก Cocktail, which is popular with mothers of the bride and guests. What is the inspiration behind these dresses and separates? A One of the main goals is to make women more beautiful and suit their needs. As with our bridal collections, in our cocktail line we have a wide variety of styles, silhouettes and cuts aimed at women of all ages. Our constant is to always use the best fabrics, and we are continually researching and looking for new options and trends every season.

Fashion Feature PROFILE

Q You are now a major presence in 80 countries. How have the many different brides and global bridal traditions you work with influenced the design of your collections? A They influence us a lot. Being present in so many countries and being able to listen to so many brides with different styles and cultures has allowed us to create collections designed and created around each one of them. In Rosa Clará you will not find a similar design, and this is thanks to them Brides are our main source of inspiration. Q Your HQ remains Barcelona, a city that is widely considered the 'world capital of bridal'. What does being in bridal's heart mean in terms of bridal talent, access to world markets and inspiration? A In our case, constant innovation and being able to reinvent and adapt ourselves in every situation

has played a very important role in our brand. We also have a product whose bases are craftsmanship, quality, and design. 'Made in Spain' provides a seal of quality. In Barcelona, there is a long tradition in textiles and this quality is recognised internationally. Q You now have a wonderful Rosa Clará store here in Mayfair where brides can see all your collections, alongside exclusive bridal accessories. Could you describe how the experience works for brides visiting one of your boutiques to choose a dress? A The experience is the same in all our stores. It is a unique experience since it is about finding the most important dress of your life. I always tell brides to listen to our professional advisors. Q Finally, having reached an amazing 25-year milestone, can you share any of Rosa Clará's plans for the upcoming seasons? A The bridal fashion industry is a constant challenge. To keep Rosa Clará the innovative brand it is, we

must constantly contribute new ideas that position us first. On top of this, we also need to grow the brand in markets where we are already recognised. Above all, the incorporation of my son Daniel into the business project is something that makes me especially excited. He is well prepared, so that makes me think that he can do it much better than me.

MINI MARVEL

Chic and slimline gowns are popular across new-season collections but Isabel Sanchis can always be relied on to add a sophisticated twist. We love this tailored off-the-shoulder design for its clean lines and sparkling trim at the neckline. isabelsanchis.com

Tiers are adding a lighthearted twist to 2021 bridal collections and Rembo Styling has a classic look for the high-summer or beach bride in Eco Love. It has bootlace straps, a bandeau neckline and layered tiers to give plenty of movement to the skirt. rembo-styling.com

We've seen a few bold minis this year but this delicious babydoll-style design by Poesie Sposa tops our list for its fun take on bridal traditions. With a round embellished illusion-panel neckline, it has a frothy spotted skirt with silk frill. poesiesposa.it

f you're a James Bond fan I (and we are) then you are eagerly awaiting the release of Time to Die after this autumn's disappointment. Grooms can steal a march by tuning into 007's sartorial style. Iconic British shoemaker Crockett & Jones collaborated with EON Productions and Bond wears several pairs of its Northamptonmade shoes as he restores order to a topsy-turvy world. First up there's a limited-edition James shoe inspired by the secret servant's impeccable

evening attire. Made from the finest box calf and featuring a hand grade leather sole, it's available as a limited edition and has an investment price tag, but makes the perfect choice for a black-tie party (or business wear). Bond also wears two other pairs from its collection – the Highbury in black calf bridges the gap between formal and less formal, while Molton (as worn by Bond in the field) is in rough-cut suede with a sporting/ military twist. All offer a classic style boost – we say your beloved will be shaken, if not a little bit stirred.

edding trends come and go but the waistcoat is a classic that is worth investing in. Whether it's morning suit, black tie or a more relaxed look for a summer or destination party, there's a waistcoat that works. The main rule is to get it made – it's the only way to ensure it fits properly with no gaps or creases. Co-ordinating with the wedding colours is the smart way to go and once you have the waistcoat chosen, you can add tie and buttonhole. We recommend you give Neal & Palmer a call, as they can give you a steer on the cut, fabric and finish that will work best. They will also advise on wedding suits to buy or hire, whatever your style.

RULE BREAKERS

e're noticing more grooms using shoes to bring colour to their day. There are no rules, but even if there are, they exist to be broken. So, whether it's an impeccable black shoe with a pop of white (such as Percy Stride's natty clock-dressed Oxford), a two-tone shoe with a bold-coloured sole or a radically different colour, we approve. Also look out for unusual textures for dress shoes, coming through strongly in Dune London's brilliant new collection.

inishing touches are the other great way to personalise your wedding attire. Cufflinks are subtle and always in style, and so is a perfect wedding-day watch. BEAUTY BOOST

IMPECCABLE WEDDING BEAUTY BY SOPHIE TILLEY

Bridal SKINCARE TIPS

Beauty expert Sophie Tilley knows everything about preparation for big events – working with both brides and celebrities. Here she gives advice on being wedding-day ready, and it all starts with your skin...

1. Cleanse properly

You may be waiting to set the date, but it’s never too early to start perfecting your regime. Two leading bridal specialists give us their advice for being your best self on the day

It may seem obvious but many of us aren’t doing this first step quite right. And think about it, if you’re not cleaning your skin properly (that’s surface skin as well as deep into the pores) none of your serums, moisturisers and treatments can penetrate efficiently. Consider what you’re using in the morning separately to the evening as these ideally should be different textures. Morning is easy: a non-foaming facewash with a gel or cream-based product will do the trick. The evening is where you should spend a bit more time after a long day, where you’ve likely been wearing skincare and make-up. Remove your makeup with a simple cleanser or micellar water, then clean your skin thoroughly. A balm cleanser is ideal for this as it will melt away impurities from fine lines and pores. Use with a muslin or microfibre cloth for extra polishing benefits.

2. Exfoliate regularly

New, fresh skin is what we all want. Uncover it by promoting your skin’s renewal process. This means sloughing off any dead, dry surface skin but also stimulating the next layer to come through. We’re not talking scrubs here (save that for your body) or anything too abrasive – gently does it. The best way is by using a liquid exfoliant. One containing BHA’s (beta-hydroxy acid) and AHA’s (alpha-hydroxy acid) will rid your face of surplus debris and you don’t even need to remove it. Some are mild enough to use every day, others you can space out throughout the week. Ease yourself in and get ready to see glass-like skin revealed.

3. SPF always

This should go without saying but protecting your skin from sun damage and all the harmful rays we’re faced with on a daily basis, is integral. Sun protection (that’s UVA & UVB rays) is the most anti-ageing product you can apply to your skin. Rain or shine, winter or summer, if you can see your hand in front of your face, you should be wearing sunscreen. I always advise SPF50 and there are plenty on the market, most of which are very affordable and will pay dividends on your flawless skin goals.

retinol at night. Antioxidant vitamin C yields a host of benefits: radiance boosting, treating uneven skin tone (pigmentation) and calming redness. Available in a variety of percentages, go for the highest you can afford. Retinol (only to be applied at night) renews skin by promoting cell turnover. It will gradually shed the outermost dead cells of your skin, revealing fresh, new layers. Retinol comes in a variety of strengths so ease yourself in and gradually build up resilience. Be sure to wear SPF the following day – very important as retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays.

5. Treat your skin

Whether it’s a mask or a moisturiser, keep an eye out for these key ingredients, depending on your main concern. If you want hydration, look for hyaluronic acid (naturally occurring in our skin), which can hold a hundred times its own weight in water. Humectants like glycerin draw moisture to the top layer of the skin, a great combination. For breakouts, salicylic acid is a good antidote, helping to control excess sebum whilst calming any redness or sensitivity. If you want an all-rounder Niacinamide is a great ingredient, helping skin to repair, retain hydration levels and build resilience. sophietilley.uk

4. Serum counts

Think of serum as taking your vitamins before eating your meal. We want to boost the nutrients and actives to improve our skin’s daily diet. The key couple I’d say here are vitamin C for the morning and

HAIR BY SUMMER LANGTON, MICHAEL VAN CLARKE

Great WEDDING HAIR

Summer Langton, Senior Stylist and bridal expert at Michael Van Clarke in Marylebone, has expert tips on trends and pre-wedding care

The key trends:

A key trend right now is for very soft pretty hair – from loose waves to a sophisticated but relaxed chignon. Classic half up half down remains a favourite for brides (from 1960s volume to boho plaits) and works really well with a veil. It’s also smart but ensures brides still feel like themselves. Accessories are also becoming popular with brides – some choosing this route over wearing a veil – and many are also keen to change their look from an up-do for ceremony to down for the reception.

Your wedding routine

Get yourself into a good hair routine. That includes trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks, avoiding unnecessary blow drying and applying treatments (try Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Pre-wash once a week, leaving it in overnight). Do get to know the hairdresser who will be doing your hair so they know your style – and the atmosphere you want to create. I recommend a hair trial after you have chosen your dress. Take along lots of pictures – the more the better – wear a top with a similar colour and neckline and don’t be afraid to try different styles. It’s wonderful if you can time a dress fitting for after your hair trial, so you see how everything works together. vanclarke.com

presents would look in your own home. With your own Wedding List Advisor you can enjoy browsing gift ideas in person, while sipping free-flowing Champagne. This personal service and Showroom experience is what makes a wedding list with us so special and is why most of our couples come to us on a word-of-mouth recommendation. Q For couples who are already living together, what are the advantages of still choosing to compile a gift list? A Most of our couples already live together, so this is something we are well versed in. Firstly, it’s a brilliant opportunity to upgrade items, but you can also add objects that you may not have been able to justify buying yourselves. With our handy group gift feature your guests can individually contribute to these extra-special, higher price-point presents. One of the biggest advantages of having a gift list is that your guests will love that you have one – it takes the stress out of choosing a present. Q When it comes to alternative gift ideas, what do you offer that’s truly unique? A We work with over 450 brands, from the big name ‘must haves’ right down to small bespoke artisans with amazing stories. We also offer the option to add presents to your wedding list from brands we don’t work with, meaning you have complete flexibility to choose exactly what you want. We even

offer an antique sourcing service, something that you won’t find with any other gift list company. Plus, you’ll find experiences and subscriptions, such as Mr & Mrs Smith and Bloom & Wild. And, of course, we offer funds towards your honeymoon, a special piece of artwork or even a wine cellar. Q How long before the wedding should you start building your list? A Generally, we suggest you start thinking about your wedding list about nine months before your wedding. We think it’s something you should take your time over and really enjoy. I can’t think of another time in your life where you’ll have the equivalent of a personal shopper helping you kit out your home, where you don’t have to foot the bill! Q Many couples are facing the tough decision to postpone their wedding at the moment. What happens to their gift list in this scenario? A It has been heartbreaking seeing so many of our wonderful couples having to postpone this year. If you find yourself in this scenario, we will work with you individually to ensure your gift list supports your new plans. Flexibility is at the heart of our business. It always has been, and it always will be. Q Finally, what special little touches can couples expect? A I can’t reveal too many special touches, otherwise it would ruin the surprise! We’re all about unexpected generosity at The Wedding Present Company. For instance, we donate 2% of the value of your wedding list to a charity of your choice. This contribution always comes from our pocket – it’s our way of giving something back on your behalf. We also offer free storage for your gifts and have a fabulous in-house delivery team who can deliver your presents after work, or at the weekend, with unlimited slots available.

or Victoria and Luca, it just had to be Italy. She is BritishGreek and he's Italian, so it felt like a natural choice for the couple, and with a home from home flavour for many of their guests. "We chose to get married by the sea in a town called Santa Margherita Ligure, by Portofino," says Victoria. "We loved how it was the perfect mix between Italy and Greece." The theme for the day was in keeping with their stunning Italian Riviera setting – bright, bold and colourful. "This was something I was very keen on since I’m a travel and fashion photographer with a

love of colour," says Victoria. Their chosen date was in late August, so the golden days of late summer, with lush foliage and flowers and warm breezes from the sea added to the splendour of the setting. As the wedding was organised from a distance, Victoria and Luca enlisted the services of local wedding planner and co-ordinator Anna Chiantella who was, they say, incredible and brought their vision for their celebration to life. Victoria had chosen a stunning gown by star Lebanese designer Gemy Maalouf, discovered in Islington at bridal store Mirror Mirror. With its flattering v neckline, fine lace and floaty full skirt, it was the perfect choice for a summer wedding.

“The theme for the day was in keeping with the stunning Italian Riviera setting – bright, bold and colourful” Her bridesmaids were outfitted in soft one-shoulder gowns in a subtle gold to apricot shade, while Luca had chosen a classic DJ with rich burgundy jacket. Flowers from local designer Sara Cattaneo picked out the lovely tones of their outfits, with soft blush apricots, bolder pinks and deep reds in the mix. Their reception setting was Villa Durazzo, a beautiful pink stucco villa overlooking the sea with classic gardens, grand period rooms and views over the Gulf of Tigullio. This also meant they could get married in the glorious Catholic church located right next door. The weather couldn't have been finer, says Victoria. "We were blessed with the most perfect day." The church ceremony began proceedings, after which they moved

into Villa Durazzo's glorious gardens to enjoy the welcome aperitivo hour catered by Capurro Ricevimenti. This, as with every other element of the catering, was superb – and much commented upon by guests (no mean feat in a country famed for superb dining). Victoria says: "The food was outstanding. Many Italians at the wedding commented that it was some of the best wedding food they had experienced in Italy". After drinks, there was a traditional element in honour of Victoria's family heritage that moved them naturally on to the feasting. "My father led a Greek blessing around the well located at the back of the villa, and we then relocated to the seafront side of the villa to enjoy a candlelit dinner as the sun went down." The dinner was, say Victoria and Luca, one of many high points of a perfect day. "Pink flowers dotted every table (created by Sara Cattaneo) and they perfectly

complemented the pink villa façade. An Italian roaming band accompanied us during the welcome drinks and serenaded the dinner tables as we dined." The music – booked through Scarlett Entertainment – was, like the rest of the day, exactly what Victoria and Luca dreamed of. With dinner concluded, there was one final formal touch – cake cutting with a dramatic backdrop of sparkler fireworks. Official duties over, they and their guests could move on to the party, held in the villa's amazing foyer area and presided over by DJ Fabrizio Valenza. It was the perfect finale to a dreamy Mediterranean wedding.

atherine and Rob knew they wanted a classic celebration, as Katherine describes it: "a traditional English garden wedding". But they also live in London, where perfect garden settings are in short supply. The capital won. "First of all, we both love London – we’re still waiting for its novelty to wear off. Secondly, we wanted our wedding to be easy and stress-free for our guests to attend." Sourcing a central garden location meant they had to find a very special spot – and what could be finer for an early June wedding than Chelsea Physic Garden. This historic botanic garden boasts a positively tropical profusion of rare trees, flowers and herbs, thanks to its mellow stone walls and

sheltered location close to the Thames. This proved to be perfect for their garden vision. "We also had a slight military edge to the day as Rob was a serving cavalry officer at the time," adds Katherine. With such a glorious backdrop chosen, the couple went for a simple and very summery theme of sky blue, with pink and white accents – reflecting the flowers in bloom in early summer. The couple opted to get married in Christ Church Chelsea, an early Victorian church located close to Royal Hospital and also within strolling distance of the Physic Garden. With venue and church in place, planning in earnest could begin, and having everything London local made planning meetings much easier. The June weather did them proud and London put on its best show, adding to ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

“I walked through the Guard of Honour, under the flower arch and down the aisle to meet a smiling Rob” what Katherine describes as the summer vibe. "We massively lucked out with the weather – blue skies and hot, hot, hot!" Katherine had chosen a gorgeous sleeveless silk gown by Peter Langner, found at Browns Bride in Marylebone. She says the team were exceptional. "I cannot recommend them highly enough – the experience from initial to final fittings was perfect and at no point stressful." She

worked with make up artist Frey-ja Barker, who has a studio at Fenwick, and found going for a trial to get her look fun. "She also brought quite a lot of cool, calm and collected to the day itself!" adds Katherine. Rob wore a bespoke morning suit and waistcoat sourced from Buckleigh of London, also star suppliers. "Lots of our wedding party also used Buckleigh and it was thumbs up all round." The formal

attire of groom worked wonderfully with the military uniforms of Rob's colleagues who were there to make their service even more special. This church service became a high point of the day. "It was the favourite part for both of us, from beginning to end," says Katherine. "Having dreaded the inevitable attention, I actually loved arriving at the church with my family, bridesmaids and bridesman in white London taxis to be met by our bagpiper, who looked so smart in head-to-toe tartan." "We walked through the Guard of Honour – an arch formed by Rob’s soldiers with their swords – under the flower arch and down the aisle to meet a smiling Rob. Rob and I then lit candles for absent family, which, together with the amazing Christ Church choir, set the tone for a special service." After the service, everyone made their way to Chelsea Physic Garden where a Raj Tents marquee had been set up for the reception. This definitely brought extra magic to an already beautiful venue. "They also supplied lighting and lovely wicker furniture with matching parasols for outside the marquee. The

aesthetic was spot on," says Katherine. The drinks reception was another favourite part of the day. "I’ll never forget the scene: a kaleidoscope of colourful summer dresses, glasses brimming with champagne, rosé and Aperol spritz, all against the backdrop of the tropical Chelsea Physic Garden on a hot summer's day – it was spectacular!" Their florist Joan Holdsworth (who has worked with Christ Church Chelsea for many years) had come up trumps with arrangements – both the showstopping floral arch in the church and the simple and country-style table flowers were beautiful and perfectly in tune with both the setting and the season. While the party was glorious, Katherine and Rob would, on reflection, have chosen a dedicated co-ordinator just to take away those inevitable pre-party stresses. Their other tip for couples is to make an event of all the wonderful small and large preparations that happen in the run up to the big day. "We had such fun at the various tastings with family, the dress and suit fittings with friends, also listening and choosing music together and picking out wedding bands." All these extra elements have become part of the memories of a perfect June wedding celebration.

STAT E LY SPLENDOUR Emma and Jack chose Gosfield Hall for their wedding celebration with friends, taking over its wonderful rooms and grounds for an elegant country party Photography JONNY SCOTT

W

hen Emma and Jack got engaged during a wonderful trip to the Rocky Mountains in Canada, they knew their wedding had to be something to match this for glamour. The most important things for their day were: first and foremost venue, followed by photographer, dress and flowers. "As we both work in design and fashion, we had a particular style we wanted so we were keen to find the right suppliers," says Jack. Then everything fell into place. "We wanted a venue that had something different about it, was stylish and people could stay the night," says Emma. The minute they walked into Gosfield Hall, an exclusive-use Country House Weddings property near Halstead, their search came to an end. "For us it was the interior features, the coloured doors – and when we were told we could get married in the Grand Salon that sold it. Jack’s Mum

really sadly passed away just after we got engaged and she had told Jack that she loved Gosfield Hall too, so for us that was the blessing we needed to go ahead." With such a striking backdrop, very little extra dressing was needed. So, the couple thought in terms of colours rather than theme, with soft pinks and grey-lilac predominating. There were small pops of yellow and blue in the flowers to add extra zing. Behind the theme were lovely personal touches. "We scented the wedding with candles sourced from Saint James Paris, a hotel Jack took me to for my 30th birthday," says Emma. They also collated photos of different points in their life as a couple for the tables. In this way, they created a lovely memory board to set the scene. Guests were also made to feel welcome with extra touches, from heel protectors, fans and confetti packs to hangover kits in the rooms (with so many guests staying over). "Together, we made the welcome A-board and postbox and Jack made all of the order of service, table plan and drinks signs," adds Emma.

While they enjoyed being creative (and also saved on their budget), one item on their 'splurge' list was photography. They searched high and low for several months, eventually spotting the work of Tom Halliday. Emma happened upon videographer RJ Films at a wedding fair and booked this as a surprise for Jack. "We have lost count of the amount of times we have watched our video and have had so many comments on it. I would definitely recommend a videographer as it's a memory you will have forever. Another key element was Emma's dress and it ended up being not at all the gown she had planned. She went to Mirror Mirror in Islington and described what she wanted. Then the clever fitter brought along another dress saying it was 'just to try'. At first Emma was dead set against it, but an hour later she was changing her mind. "Two appointments later and I was in love and had purchased it." Designed by Gemy Maalouf, it's perfect for a country house setting, made of structured and fitted lace with a dramatic low back. "My favourite part is the huge silk skirt that goes over the top and can be worn down as a huge

train or slightly shorter. Obviously, it was trodden on all day and was a nightmare to walk in, but who cares – it was amazing.” The dress was accessorised with suede Jimmy Choos – a something blue – and a Tiffany pearl necklace bought as a gift by Jack to create her something new. Jack wore a smart navy-blue suit with grey waistcoat and an Omega watch that was a surprise from Emma on the morning of the wedding. The couple say the ceremony was perfect, with a violin and piano music blending classical and modern to match their style. There were candles burning in honour of those who couldn't be at the celebration. The Grand Salon of Gosfield Hall made the event feel truly special, especially as the couple had written their own vows. The party that followed captured more special memories. Emma and Jack chose a favourite drink each and one they both loved. This meant guests could choose from

prosecco, Aperol spritz and mojito (with lots of non-alcoholic refreshments available, alongside beer). Gorgeous canapés were served by the in-house caterers at Country House Weddings. "For entertainment we had a jazz quartet who were brilliant and were lucky enough to have the most amazing weather," says Emma. A delicious wedding breakfast followed and then guests spread out to enjoy the after party with a DJ who had, say the couple, a very long list of songs. As a lovely extra touch, guests had each chosen a favourite song on their RSVP to add to the set. Canary Photobooths added to the fun, creating party memories to last long after the celebration. Emma and Jack's tip for other couples would be to take time out as a couple – and also with bridesmaids and groomsmen – so you can all reflect on a day that passes all too quickly. But they definitely have no regrets about the choices they made for their wedding. "I don't think we could change anything – it wouldn't beat the day we had," says Emma.

Country PA RT Y Alex and Will had to change their wedding

plans but, as it turned out, they wouldn't have altered a thing – hosting a perfect country celebration on home turf with friends and family there to wish them all the love in the world Photography BILL SYKES

A

lex and Will had planned a classic country wedding at her family's home in Rotherfield, surrounded by the rolling Sussex countryside, but then life (or rather Covid-19) intervened to force a change of plan. With new rules and social distancing in place, their wedding day became something different, but the location and the overall vision remained true. The English country wedding is a timehonoured format – celebrated in film and life – and this was just what they had always planned. "I wanted the wedding to have a relaxed feeling with the dogs running around – a country at home feeling," says Alex. She and Will had set the date

and started to put everything in place. It would be at her parents' house in East Sussex. "It's where we spend a lot of time at weekends, Christmas, Easter – basically whenever I can be there as I love being in the country, seeing my family and the dogs." They had planned for a traditional format, with ceremony at her local church and party in the back garden at home. Originally, the guest list was going to run to around 150 people. Once the plans started to shift there was, says Alex, a lot of back and forth to decide how to proceed. But in the end they decided to stick to the original plan, albeit with a new and much smaller guest list, and make some clever adjustments. And so, on a beautiful summer's day, guests and family gathered in Rotherfield. The couple started their wedding day at the village's lovely church. "We had a very small ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK   91

“I wanted the wedding to have a relaxed feeling with the dogs running around – a country at home feeling” ceremony in the church, with my parents, brother and maid of honour and Will's parents and his brother, who was best man," says Alex. She and Will had decided to keep numbers small for a very good reason. "I didn't want all my guest in masks." The ceremony was beautiful and her father was still able to walk her up the aisle, with Will and Alex coming down the church path to the traditional cloud of confetti petals. With ceremony over, family and guests returned home. The setting, in a field behind their garden, was something special, offering beautiful views over the rolling Downs. It needed very little dressing but had delightfully rustic hay bales for guests to sit and enjoy the pastoral view. There followed a lovely alfresco ceremony under a glorious floral arch so

that everyone who couldn't be with them in the church could be with them here. This meant that the bride was walked up the aisle twice – a personal and very elegant solution that meant everyone could feel part of Will and Alex's special day. The original colour themes had remained unchanged, with glorious pale pinks and creams and lots of green foliage. Alex says she went big on flowers – a decision that definitely paid off as they added amazing colour to this glorious country scene. "They were amazing!" she says. Alex's bridesmaids wore lovely soft pink Maids to Measure gowns, while her flowergirls were in pretty white gowns

with floral headbands and big pink sashes. Alex wore a beautiful sleeveless silk dress by Caroline Castigliano, paired to Jimmy Choos and a glorious custom-made veil by Unveiled by Sophie. "She creates bespoke veils that are amazing – she sources the silk and the lace," says Alex. After this special ceremony and lots of photographs, everyone moved into the marquee for the wedding feast. Canvas had been dressed for the occasion with lavish garlands of flowers, elegant candles and neutral linens, with sides left open to make the most of the High Weald views and the summer weather. Alex and Will were incredibly grateful to the team from Papakata, who did everything possible to help make their marquee a wonderful centrepiece of the celebration. "Honestly, amazing in the planning and all the changes due to Covid. The guys who came to set up and take down were just so great! We would highly recommend them." While this wasn't on the scale of the country wedding Alex and Will had originally planned, it was a perfect day, fulfilling all the originals of their vision. Alex says: "The best thing about our celebration was being with friends and family and dogs at home, and the lovely weather." Her advice to other couples is to stress less – wise words indeed from a bride and

groom who really did have to rethink plans from the ground up. "Everyone says this but the day goes so quickly after so much planning, you really need to try and take it all in. I stressed so much over so many things, but actually none of it matters in the end," says Alex. "Obviously, it was going to be much bigger, but in hindsight I wouldn't change things – the size was perfect."

Hold the wedding itself in Sibton Park or one of the pretty nearby churches. Follow the ceremony with a wedding breakfast for 120 in the Orangery or up to 240 in the adjoining marquee, before partying in the cellars until dawn. Begin the next day with a stylish pool party or brunch down by the lake. Be surprised by the beauty of Sibton, with its lake, woods and wildowers, and the quality of the interior design. Inside our Venues Hot List you’ll find the best new openings and handpicked venues that used this time to cleverly inject fresh ideas. You and your fiancé can set the trend by being one of the first to tie the knot at these glorious locations. Imagine arriving by boat at the brand-new Mitre Hotel opposite Hampton Court Palace. Or take over a lovingly restored stately home such as Holmewood or the super-chic Chapel Barn Estate. We’ve been to visit venues that have undergone major refurbishments. Affluent estates are offering thoughtful packages for intimate weddings, while live streaming has become the norm. Nearly all venues are now offering virtual showrounds which is a brilliant way to get an initial feel for the place. As we prepare for a wedding boom in 2021, we’re predicting a big rise in midweek weddings. Many couples are deciding to add an extra day or two. Cherishing that special time with friends and family, more important now, than ever before. Locations such as Deer Park in Devon are perfectly designed for this kind of wedding. It’s also the time to be creative, so if your guest list is smaller why not go all out on the details? Innovation is at the heart of weddings and all of these venues are ready to help you plan your dream celebration. As all romantics know, love wins and weddings are the ultimate showcase of that. Let your exciting countdown begin.

edding gift lists are definitely branching out and one of our favourite trends is for artisan creations. The bonus for your guests is that they are gifting something that they know ticks boxes for style, individuality and matching your taste. All the gift list companies offer choice names, but we're very taken by some of the designers working with The Wedding Present Company. For instance, Cheskie offers superb talking-point silver and copper holloware made in central Mexico. We love the toucan and cockatoo creamer jugs in double-plated silver or copper (from £270). Also check out The Wedding Present Company's Issy Granger glass candlesticks – elegant with a delightful antique meets modern flavour (from £22). They also stock her lovely carafes and jugs. Of course, if you can't find the designer you want on their books, just ask. It's all part of the service. weddingpresentco.com

ou may not think you know Juliet Glaves' work, but you almost certainly do if you've ever admired one of Temperley London's lush flower crowns – invariably a feature of the British designer's bridal collection shoots. Juliet brings a theatrical and set designer's eye to fashion shoots, film, TV and events, as well as helping brides' dreams come true (she works on limited weddings each year). What is really exciting about her approach is her founding principles of seasonality and sustainability – key themes coming through in every aspect of bridal right now, and especially so in flowers. Many consider Juliet a pioneer in this approach, since she not only designs with flowers, but also grows her own on a large and verdant plot in Shropshire. Her flower farm initiative began after a 2007 documentary she made for the BBC about the traditional cut-flower industry in Britain – at that stage almost rendered extinct by hothouse imports. Now her carefully tended acres are a mecca for wildlife (win-win for brides whose flowers have also looked after Brothers pollinators) and take us backLeeming to a time when bespoke invitation handbrides carried whatever wasfeaturing in season. drawn illustration. There is, says Juliet, "a magical quality leemingbrothers.co.uk to flowers that have lived a natural life". julietglaves.com

• Listen to your floral designer's advice – they know what works and also what will stand up to a long wedding day. • Be inspired by local growers – there's now a network of great florists who work very sustainably.

irtual bridal appointments have been part of the bridal scene for a while now – always useful for brides living overseas or with a busy working schedule. But now they are being used to help brides, grooms and guests make their shopping decisions if they can't or don't want to visit in person right now. At Emmy London, for example, virtual appointments are helping brides and occasion goers choose a gorgeous pair of collection or bespoke shoes. You can have a one-to-one with a stylist and create the design in the colour you want, with perfect finishing-touch details. Lalage Beaumont also offers virtual appointments for glamorous mother of the bride and guest outfits, helping to narrow down the kind of look that will work with the event, the season and your style. All designers will tell you that nothing beats face to face (and there are lots of safety measures in place at a personal appointment), but right now we salute this approach to helping people get started on finding their dream outfit without having to travel. emmylondon.com and lalagebeaumont.com

e're predicting a new wave of couples looking at auctions as a way to add style to their home. One reason is antique furniture is at an historically depressed price point – you can pick up a Georgian chest of drawers for a fraction of what you would have paid a decade or so ago and often the craftsmanship is superb. The trend here is for one or two choice pieces that sit comfortably alongside more modern finds. Also check out the 20th Century sales – you'll find pieces from names such as Heal's and Liberty in the mix, alongside quality mid-century style by the likes of Ercol (now fetching quite high prices at specialist sales). The Saleroom is the place to check for sales up and down the country and these days you can bid remotely or join a timed auction. As ever, check the condition report, set your limit and factor in the commission – think around 30 per cent. If you buy art, you may also have to pay an additional fee under Artists' Resale Rights. Why not add an auction gift fund to your wedding list? saleroom.com

ith many brides yet to set the date (even find the place), how do you decide what to choose for a 2021 or 2022 wedding? We spoke to Clare Thompson of The Wedding Club to get insights into some of the key upcoming trends spotted at the New York and Barcelona virtual shows. • Designers are including lots of square necklines – a classic look revived in different ways on both ballgowns and more form-fitting dresses. • Off the shoulder remains a key trend. Also look out for dresses with adjustable features such as half-sleeves – these are becoming popular across collections. • Florals are always in the mix, but there are wonderful 3D and appliqué embellishments for the 2021-22 season. • Romantic and softer, flowing lines are gaining ground. There is also a trend coming through for clean and simple lines and minimal embellishment. thewedding-club.co.uk ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK   115

A

trip to Lake Como has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, so when it came to choosing a minimoon destination we looked no further. Admittedly, we are technically 'pre-wedding honeymooners', an emerging travel group due to postponed celebrations, but our chosen spot is as special as it gets – the perfect place to celebrate being almost married. The butterflies of excitement build as we wind through the mountains, on the hour-long drive from Milan Malpensa Airport. We are staying at the 5-star, Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Boasting a rich history and still family owned, it has looked after the great and the good for a century and counting. The exterior is breathtakingly lovely, with a pale-yellow façade, sweeping staircase and palm trees swaying in the light breeze. We’re warmly greeted, our luggage is unloaded and our (slightly embarrassing) hire-car is whisked off by the valet to be parked among the Ferraris. Inside, the hotel's grandeur exceeds our expectations – it is palatial. The walls and ceilings are painted in bold Italian tones, there are towering marble pillars, ornamental furniture and velvet sofas for lounging. The air is scented by vases and urns of fresh red roses, all adding to the opulence. We check into a Prestige Lake View Room, which strikes the perfect balance of old meets new. There’s a golden antique king-size bed, mirrored wardrobes, marble bathroom and delightful balcony – perfect spot for an aperitif. Later, we sneak a room tour (already thinking ahead for a return visit). Suite Greta was designed with honeymooners in mind and has a four-poster bed looking straight out onto the water. Newly refurbed rooftop rooms also boast stunning views, while the Balbianello Suite has the serious wow-factor, with a large terrace, hot tub and avant-garde furniture. We learn that all the ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK   119

suites are named after powerful ladies of the lake, each deeply connected to the hotel's heritage. On our first afternoon, we head lakeside, to the recently created hotel beach area. Bright orange (the hotel's signature colour) parasols and comfy sun beds look pristine against the white sand. Staff are wearing orange Supergas and white shirts – even the uniforms here are chic. We settle at the wooden-decked bar area for light lunch and order two Aperol Spritz, the famous Italian cocktail much loved by us. Later we take a dip in the floating pool, described simply as ‘water on the water’ and definitely the hotel’s crown jewel. You can feel the sensation of the lake's waves rocking underneath

as you’re totally immersed in the amazing surroundings. Breakfast is a truly grand affair, definitely not to be missed, and takes place in the former ballroom of the hotel. Cured Italian meats, crumbling cheeses, delicate pastries and all the classics are served from silver finery. After indulging, we decide to burn off a few calories by exploring the tropical gardens. We follow the zigzag pathway up the steep landscape until we reach the viewing point. We’re met by the hotel's mascot, teddy-bear Bobo, who sits proudly on a bench overlooking the splendid grounds. Here, you can take in the panoramic scenery and spot Bellagio in the distance. The garden is also home to the

tranquil Flowers Pool and pizzeria for delicious lazy lunches. T Pizza boasts a wood-fired oven and menu with all the signature toppings. T Spa is another quiet haven with an infinity pool (again, with lake views) that can be privately hired after 8pm if you’d like it all to yourselves. Many of the treatment rooms have beautiful mosaic floors and hand-painted ceilings – a superb setting for a spoiling couple’s massage. A real highlight of our stay is the opportunity to sample the signature tasting menu of the great Maestro Gualtiero Marchesi. He is considered by many as the founder of modern Italian cuisine, and is even rumoured to have (fabulously) turned down Michelin stars as he valued guest feedback first and foremost. Today, the menu is created by the hotel’s Executive Chef Osvaldo Presazzi and served on the terrace – said to be one of the best spots in all of Lake Como. It's certainly the place to feast on the finest Italian cuisine over five courses, including

the restaurant's world-famous rice decorated with glistening gold and saffron. The sommelier is on hand to pair each course with wine. Later, a nightcap at the hotel's traditional T Bar rounds off a perfect luxurious culinary experience. The location of the hotel is hard to beat, with Bellagio only a 10-minute boat ride away. Tremezzo itself is small, with a handful of great restaurants including La Darsena (request a table outdoors). A short taxi ride up the hill takes you to the family-owned La Fagurida. Here, copper pans hang from the stone walls and the candlelit terrace couldn’t be cosier. The simple menu of traditional dishes is exceptional. We make the mistake of sharing the tiramisu, but we find it really is too good to halve. We discover there’s only one way to experience the lake in all its glory, and that’s from the water. Captain Carlo meets us on the hotel’s jetty to welcome us onboard Ruy, a magnificently restored period Venetian motorboat. A natural host, Carlo pops open a bottle of prosecco and points out all the sites dotted along the shores. These include Villa del Balbianello, made famous

by Ian Fleming's Casino Royale, and Le Rose, where Winston Churchill stayed in 1945. We also pass 18thcentury Villa Sola Cabiati, owned by Hotel Grand Tremezzo and now available for exclusive private hire. For maximum wow factor, do what we did and book the boat tour at golden hour. The sparkle of the water as you sip prosecco and watch the sun melt away behind the jagged spikes of the mountains is unforgettable. In fact, Captain Carlo’s tour was one of the most memorable, magical moments we’ve shared together to date. With the dramatic backdrop and everything on offer for guests, it occurs to me that this isn’t simply a hotel, it's a destination you can’t help but fall in love with. The home of our honeymoon, Grand Hotel Tremezzo we’ll be back!

TREASURES

Whether it's an enchanted weekend or an idyllic rural wedding you're after, you'll find magical settings in the countryside. We explore two perfect places for a UK getaway

W

WILDERNES S RESERVE

ilderness Reserve is at the top of everyone’s list for a UK staycation thanks to its gorgeous individual properties – twenty and counting. Located in Sibton, Suffolk, it's the place for exclusive hire, nailing the laid-back luxury approach for every size of party, writes Isabella Eckett. Over two decades, the 5,000-acre estate has been regenerated, with nature at the heart of every development. Cows and sheep graze the land freely and vast wildflower meadows add to the tranquility. But what really sets Wilderness Reserve apart is the incredibly chic interiors of the restored farmhouses and cottages in its grounds. The Grange has its own spa facilities, outdoor pool and hot tub, cosy girly bedrooms with rolltop baths and a large rustic kitchen for cooking or dancing around. The Walled Garden is Insta-famous for its floor-to-ceiling glass windows, while the Suffolk-pink Farmhouse makes a fabulously cosy

and chic backdrop for your luxury weekend away. Sibton Park manor house or the brand new Chapel Barn are perfect for accommodating larger celebrations. For weddings, the estate is available for exclusive hire – and there are only a handful each year, making this rather special. There are also a romantic boltholes for two nestled in the grounds. Candle-lit (electricityfree) Hex Cottage is a honeymooners' favourite. This is proper countryside, so with an abundance of activities on offer. Go paddle-boarding on the serpentine lake, explore by Pashley bicycle or shoot a few clays. The estate has its own ranger to show you around – hot tip: bird-watching has become the in thing among guests. Foodies are in heaven here. The Bonfire Experience, where you dine alfresco in the woods, is unmissable. If you want grand, hire one of the estate’s private chefs for a seasonal five-star feast. “We find that the golden Chelsea Bar is perfect for an after-dinner tipple or a cocktail (or two) post retail therapy”

E

legantly placed in a leafy Chelsea street, 11 Cadogan Gardens is tucked away behind bustling Sloane Square. The grand Victorian building promises luxury and style in a rather peaceful setting. And it totally lives up to this promise. The opulent decor brings a feel of indulgence and intimacy from the moment we enter – plush and welcoming carpets underfoot, moody lighting, art-adorned walls and sparkling chandeliers. Welcome to the ultimate in discreet London luxury. The hotel has a long and august history. It was built by Lord Chelsea in the late 19th century and originally comprised four separate Victorian townhouses. It very quickly became a favourite bolthole for travelling European aristocrats and bon viveurs. Later, it had a spell as a discreet and elite private members' club. Following extensive renovation, it reopened as a hotel in 2016 – and it has the perfect boutique credentials, with all you need to feel spoiled and special. Meandering period corridors and sweeping staircases connect the 56 rooms, including 25 suites, all of which are individually decorated. Our fabulous suite is beyond elegant. A giant four-poster bed dominates the bedroom area, with the crispest of linen and plumpest of pillows. Light pours in through the three large windows, framing the Chelsea skyline. The sparkling marble bathroom offers a huge deep bath and spacious shower, thick, cosy robes, slippers and divine Noble Isle toiletries. In the separate lounge there's a Nespresso machine and flat screen TV – perfect place to chill after a long hard day of shopping and dining. Outside our room, we discover a wealth of lovely shared spaces. The plush, light-filled Drawing Room offers classic English afternoon tea and a hidden terrace to the side where we catch some autumnal sunshine. Bibliophiles like us can easily get lost in the Library, with its extensive collection of unique books – some dating back to the mid-19th century. Our favourite place? The dramatic golden Chelsea Bar with its comfortable bar stools and inventive cocktail list. Perfect for an afterdinner tipple or a cocktail (or two) post retail therapy and before we head up at bedtime to our perfect suite. Also set on this charming street is the hotel’s restaurant – Hans’ Bar and Grill. This offers a tasty all-day menu created by recently arrived rising star chef Rowen Babe. With everything you could want,

from healthy breakfasts through to light bites, sharing platters and treats from the grill, we take advantage of its flexible eating. There are great fish and seafood dishes, alongside inventive vegetarian dishes, on the menu. When we do venture out to flex our shopping muscles, we discover that Harrods and Harvey Nichols are rather too handy, as are the world’s top brands, including Prada, Chanel and Tiffany’s. The iconic King's Road also offers myriad shopping and dining experiences. We explore Pavilion Road's artisanal food and flower shops, cafes and restaurants – perfect for a spot of people and pooch watching. No doubting that this is epicentre of shoppers' heaven and our credit cards do get a bit of a workout – especially as we can drop our bags off in between forays. And when we're finally done, it's lovely to return to our suite right in the heart of Chelsea.

The Insta-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site city of Petra has been named as the number one bucketlist experience in the world, while the rose-sand Wadi Rum desert, the Dead Sea and Dana Biosphere Reserve also make the list. While Petra needs very little introduction, it’s worth considering it in tandem with some of Jordan’s other great sites. Wadi Rum is home to nomadic Bedouin tribes and offers landscapes that will be familiar from several Hollywood films. The Dead Sea attracts visitors to Jordan from all over the world, keen to experience the natural treatments provided by its mineral-rich mud. Jordan’s largest nature reserve, Dana covers over 300 square kilometres along the face of the Great Rift Valley and is home to some 700 plant species and rare animals such as the lesser kestrel, Syrian wolf and sand cat. intrepidtravel.com

uoni has published a honeymoon report, tracking trends among couples whose plans have been thrown into disarray this year by Covid-19. Trends emerging so far include an increased spend – possibly couples have longer to save and have missed out on a trip or two during lockdown. Kuoni also reports a big increase in couples looking to take two honeymoons – a short haul just after the wedding, followed by a much bigger long-haul adventure a year or two down the line. So far, top three best-selling destinations for 2021 Kuoni honeymoons are the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Mauritius, while minimoon favourites are Italy, Greece and Spain. Trending requests include private-pool villas, African safaris with tended camps and UK and Ireland luxury trips. kuoni.co.uk

Real Weddings PERFECT DAY

There's an old rule about never working with animals or you will be upstaged, but any bride and groom worth knowing would make an honourable exception for camels called Eliza and Ed P h o t o g r a p h y : TA R A M O L L E R t a r a m o l l e r. c o m

edding photography has perils aplenty when it comes to managing the group shots – just think of all those sugar-fuelled flowergirls and page boys. But what if you get an unusual assignment for a set of formal photographs of bride, groom plus camels? Guess what, it was simply irresistible for photographer Tara Moller! Eliza and Ed are, after all, very special ungulates, being dearly

loved companions who have centre stage at many a family event. Having spent an awful lot of time with them at her family's home, the bride knew she had to have a formal portrait or two on her wedding day for posterity and to put in the photo album – a reminder of these favourite four-legged friends. Bride, groom, Eliza and Ed assembled – wedding finery paired to smart matching halters – and the animal magic began. It has to be said that camels are not normally known for their cheery demeanour –

sometimes they even look like they have the hump – but Eliza and Ed are used to being the centre of attention and they relished their moment in the camera's gaze and vogued like old timers. After the first shots were sent out, the bride expressed her heartfelt thanks for the beautiful pictures, adding: "Those camels are such posers, they always steal the limelight". They were, says Tara Moller, the ultimate wedding props, even though bride and groom definitely were most royally upstaged.
