verybody loves Christmas, yet still we all complain when it seems to start earlier each year, and go on for longer, and involve more intense preparation. But there's no denying that decorations do get better every year: more stylish, more varied and more humorous. Some of my favourites this year include the hot dog stand bauble at the Conran Shop, the do-it-yourself wooden elves at Skandium and the intensely colourful boiled wool creations at Anthropologie. Also this year, crackers have got serious with new offerings from Claridges and a huge range at Harrods – while a strong focus on sustainability is leading to a rejection of anything single-use (yes, including crackers). Not everything in this issue is Christmassy, however, because we're combining December and January into a single winter magazine – so as well as Christmas excess we're looking at January lounging. Lighting plays a role as we admire Plumo's energy-efficient bulbs and Cameron Design's on-trend strip lights – and swoon over Bella Freud's showhome in TV Centre. The fashion designer has teamed up with salvage expert Maria Speake from Retrouvius to furnish an entire penthouse, and it's not just the lighting that's covetable. Happy Christmas.

o celebrate the launch of their yearlong partnership with American businesswoman, interior designer and style icon Iris Apfel, global design brand Nude is launching an Inspired by Iris collection of striking designs which draw on Iris’s indomitable style at Maison & Objet in January. Working with Nude’s design team, Iris has added her own unique touch to existing Nude collections in the only way she knows how: by adding layers of decoration and colour. Tomas Kral’s iconic Beak collection has been reimagined in acid bright colours and bold stripes. Suitable for water or wine, this whimsical collection is the perfect dinner party accompaniment. The once simple Mono Box, originally designed by Ayse Birsel for Nude, has similarly undergone an Iris Apfel transformation, with clashing colours and elegant patterns being added to the vase’s curved exterior. An art piece in itself, the multifunctional Mono Box can be used as a vase to complement a beautiful floral arrangement, as a bowl or even as an ice bucket. Other new pieces include a pair of lead-free crystal Iris Apfel paperweights which feature the American fashion hero’s iconic glasses and red lipstick. Nude’s ethos of ‘simple is beautiful’ might not seem an obvious match for Apfel’s bold, challenging and decidedly unsimple style, but the two agree on one core message: ‘simple is beautiful’. Apfel says: “As you can see I am hardly a minimalist. I love to layer accessories and dress in colour, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think simple. Nude is my simplicity, simplicity is a state of mind, and I think simple is beautiful” The new collections will be available in spring 2019 at nudeglass.com.

here’s something intriguingly atmospheric about the Television Centre flats. Windows in the circular Helios building face inwards, allowing residents to look into each other’s rooms in a Rear Windowesque way, which of course gives the site excellent cinematic potential. This slightly surreal element is put to brilliantly stylish effect by Bella Freud, who together with Retrouvius’s Maria Speake has devised a complete interior for the penthouse apartment. Their inspiration for it came from cinema, the 1970s and porn – and the result is glamorous, retro and colourful. Bella Freud, daughter of Lucian, greatgranddaughter of Sigmund, epitomises west London cool, not just because of her heritage but because of her enduring and timeless style. Her iconic Word jumpers remain objects of desire season after season. The Grade IIlisted Helios building is an icon on the west

London skyline, its midcentury aesthetic lovingly restored in its conversion to a residential development. She said: ‘It was great to work in a place with so much history – that has been so entwined with my life and my interests – and to imagine how I would live there.’ The seventh floor penthouse’s layout is upside down, with bedrooms on the lower floor as you enter, and a large open plan living/ dining area and kitchen upstairs, on top of the world. Impressive views stretch for miles over west London on one side of the building – on the other side you can see directly into the neighbours’ lives. Residents have been instructed to keep their laundry out of sight (literally and figuratively) and sliding glass doors open onto large terraces. The living area is decadent – think rich shades of rust, green and gold with stylish lacquered sofa frames in black – and walls range from murky green to ochre to neutral. Vintage light fittings are large in scale: above the glass dining table is a 1960s chandelier arrangement in gold and frosted glass, and a collection of Marcel Breuer cantilever cane chairs. A small snug room leads off the kitchen area, designed with Bella’s teenage son Jimmy in mind and simply furnished with an outsize screen and a gold corduroy sofa, with cork wall tiles and more gold light fittings. MARIA SPEAKE (LEFT) AND BELLA FREUD IN THE PENTHOUSE
Downstairs, the bedrooms are cosier and darker. The master bedroom is painted deep, dark red and a low, metal-framed bed is arranged with Bella’s slogan blankets and cushions. The second bedroom has a thick golden carpet - Bella calls the shade ‘marigold’ – and woollen wall hangings create a luxurious, rich feel. Maria Speake – dressed on brand in a red 1970 sweater – explains the design process: “We kept saying, ‘is it porny enough?’” Artworks include photographs from Lorena Lohr, sexy, colourful and subversive plates by Eliza Hopewell, and op-art prints by Jacob Wolff. This isn’t the first time Freud and Speake have collaborated: they have worked on two successive London homes for Bella, as well as her flagship store on Chiltern Street. Speake said: ‘This was a fantastic excuse to work with Bella again. his kitchen takes up most of the ground floor of a Victorian house in south London belonging to Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead of 2LG Studio. It showcases a range designed by the studio for John Lewis of Hungerford, and its beautiful scheme is complemented by specially designed lighting by Cameron Design House. The challenge was to take the classic strip light and re-imagine it in a contemporary context. “We love to disrupt the norm and wanted to do just that with our Victorian property. The lights are a key part of that for us, bringing an ultra modern edge to the period architecture.” say 2LG. “We wanted to create lighting that was functional and beautiful. We started with a fluorescent strip light as a base and went
from there,” say 2LG. The idea was to create something that felt at once familiar and alien; and it had to feature colour. “We are often drawn to what other may see as ugly. This intrigues us. So we loved the idea of taking a strip light and making it sexy.” The elegant lights come in green, pink, brushed brass and blue, which have become 2LG’s core colours over the past five years. The lights have a pill shape and look almost as though you could break the glass in case of emergency to release a life-giving substance. They are beautifully crafted, yet playful. This collaboration between Cameron Design House and 2LG Studio has captured the attention of the design world with its promotion of the importance of individuality through interiors. 2LG say: “We like to disrupt spaces and for us this light works in both modern and period settings. There is an exciting tension when you place a bold modern statement in a classical or persion setting. They would be equally at home on a spaceship from the future or on the set of a Kubrick movie.” The kitchen range features curved tops and fluted glass and is available in 2LG’s signature colour palette of pale pinks, garden green and electric blue. The star piece is the freestanding larder unit with fluted glass doors and a painted interior.

Q: Many of us struggle to understand the environmental impacts of different bulbs. Could you explain quickly? A: The main thing to focus on is efficiency. LED bulbs use less than 20% of the energy incandescent bulbs use to create the same amount of light. Because lighting accounts for such a large percentage of domestic and industrial energy use, then this 80%+ reduction is a huge chunk of saved energy. And when your energy use is reduced, you don’t need to burn so much coal to generate energy. If we can get clean energy generation to grow and energy use to fall, then one day (hopefully very soon) they’ll meet in the middle and we’ll no longer need to burn things every time we flip a switch. Q: As the world’s first ‘designer efficient light bulb’ was the Plumen bulb devised to address primarily the ugliness of the original low-voltage bulbs, or the nasty light they made? A: We started Plumen to address all the issues that stopped people buying efficient bulbs. People’s primary complaints were the ugliness of the products, the bad light quality and the slowness of ignition. So we made a pretty bulb, with nice light and instant startup. Good looks, plus the quality and experience of light are of equal performance. We knew we had to really make people fall in love with the designs and user experience if we were going to make any impact and build a brand. Q: And how did you go about making it? A: We started with a bunch of sketches with pipe cleaners, then when we’d lined up a factory we brought in a designer to work with (Samuel Wilkinson) and then went out to research what was possible on the production lines in China. After lots of iterations and trial and error, we arrived at a viable industrial product.
We made a pretty bulb, with nice light and instant startup
Q: What is Plumen’s best-selling product? A: It is still the classic 001 design although the other models are building all the time. The 003 is like a best kept secret, but because it produces such a magical light, there’s a growing fan base around it’s golden glow.
PLUMEN FOUNDERS NICHOLAS ROOPE (LEFT) AND MICHAEL-GEORGE HEMUS
D E S I G N LIGHTING
Q: What is it makes the quality of some lighting so ugly and how can you avoid this? A: It’s to do with new lighting technology. The cheap tech doesn’t possess the full spectrum of light. And if certain areas of the spectrum in the light are patchy, then the colours you perceive in that light feel flat, grey and cold – like a horror movie. If you love high quality white light then look for the CRI (Colour Rending Index). Anything in the high 80s and above is going to be pleasant. The other key thing for buyers is to be aware of kelvin. With LED you can buy different light temperatures. If you want the warmer light of a standard incandescent then make sure you buy ‘warm white’ which is usually somewhere around 2700k (kelvins). A cooler, daylight bulb or “cool white” will be a higher number, e,g. 4000k. These are good for bright, awake spaces, but a bit of a vibe-killer in cosier places. plumen.com
Q: Are Plumen bulbs designed to be used without a shade? A: Yes they are. It’s obviously part of the efficiency drive. The less you shade, the more efficient. But if you don’t shade then the bulbs has to be beautiful and interesting. Now that the 001 design is LED it also dims which makes it work even better naked. We still love seeing our bulbs together with shades and accessories though. Even if a glass shades is clear it adds a lot to the look (but doesn’t cost efficiency). We’re Pinterest obsessives, always looking for brands and designs to buddy up with.

etal-framed windows are on-trend at the moment, and can make a real design statement, both inside and outside your home. They also have a much longer life-span than uPVC windows, meaning that they’re a real investment. But not all steel windows are the same. Fabco Sanctuary, based in West Sussex, has one of the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the industry, enabling it to provide some of the highest thermally performing products. All Fabco Sanctuary windows and doors are supplied with toughened glass, filled with Krypton gas, which gives more insulation than the standard double glazing. They also feature laser-cut hinges, which are machined through the frame rather than added on afterwards, for a more secure hinge. This attention to detail at every stage of the process ensures that your bespoke windows and doors are both durable and attractive. A whole house renovation took place in Clapham Common, in 2017. Steel framed Glazing from Fabco Sanctuary offers unparalleled performance values out the property and chose to install Fabco’s bespoke steel doors throughout the ground floor of their home. With the help of their architect they looked at several steel window companies, but Fabco stood out straight away. Their pricing was competitive, lead times were workable, and the builders chosen to complete the renovation had worked with them in the past. All of Fabco’s products are engineered on specialised CNC machinery. This ensures higher degrees of accuracy and allows them to work within much smaller tolerances. The benefits are numerous. his project involved the reconversion and extension of a semi-detached Victorian villa which had been carved up into four separate flats. Among the clients’ priorities was to have generous living spaces with ample room to display a large private art collection. A strong sense of light throughout was also desired, especially in the new basement rooms. A simple pallet of materials runs through the house. There is a pale oak herringbone floor on the upper levels and a cast in-situ power floated concrete floor at the lower levels which, together with painted plaster walls, were chosen as a backdrop for more distinctive furniture and artwork throughout. Wall panelling was employed in the TV nook and ground floor study to create more intimate spaces. Extensive built-in joinery throughout makes efficient use of the space available as well as adding accent colours to various rooms. The staircase features a simple ribbon of solid plaster balustrade with timber handrail, supported by bespoke cast brass brackets. At the rear of the house, new rear extensions make use of glazed terrace floors, which also act as rooflights, bringing in generous amounts of natural light.
Q: The house is beautiful. How big was the project and where did you begin? A: Thank you. The house is not large by west London standards, but the project was a significant undertaking as it involved an almost total rebuild of the original house, including a large new basement, on a tight, tricky site. Q: What was the brief? A: The brief was to create a comfortable family home, maximising available light and space and to accommodate an extensive art collection. Q: How did you change the building’s layout? A: The two really significant changes were the creation of a new basement and a total reworking of the original staircase. The house was divided into four flats when we began so there is pretty much nothing left of the original layout. Q: There are lots of glass doors and partitions. Can you tell us about them? A: We wanted to create a sense of openness

The rooms are all simple rectangular spaces so we wanted the circulation spaces to be a bit softer and more organic throughout the house, in particular within and between the principal floors. There was some conflict between this desire and the need to create functional spaces that could be used separately and privately. Glazed partitions provide the best of both worlds, creating separation but retaining the strong visual connections that we sought. Q: How was the storage created? A: Storage has been created on every level. It has all been integrated in such a way as to minimise its visual impact and use ‘leftover’ space as much as possible. The brief demanded a large art store which has been incorporated into the basement behind a huge secret door. Q: The staircase is a beautiful shape and the halls seem so wide. Can you tell us about that? A: The staircase is in fact very modest in size but the simple white sculptural shapes, huge window and skylight and the narrow double-height volume all make it feel larger than it really is. The rooms are all simple rectangular spaces so we wanted the circulation spaces to be a bit softer and more organic. Q: Can you describe the colour scheme and the materials used? A: The materials palette has been kept very simple. White walls, a mix of polished concrete and oak parquet on the floors, black Crittal windows and subtle details highlighted in brass. The idea was to make calm, beautiful spaces and to let the owners’ collection of beautiful art and furniture shine. We were lucky enough to have a client with a fantastic eye for style and colour. We worked very closely together to ensure a seamless continuity between the architecture and interior design. 318.studio

fter the devastation of the city of Cologne during the war, a father who had a stroke of ingenuity sent out four brothers into the darkness of the night to collect empty bullet cartridges. The city was leveled, and struggled to light up the night with a lack of electricity, but the blacksmith father saw the brass cartridges that carpeted the floors everywhere as being merely a material from which he could mold all sorts of required amenities. He started to work with all the brass war remnants to create initially simple amenities like ashtrays and vases, but quickly saw that at night, the darkness was fended off with difficulty in a skeletal city that had just suffered the repeated bombings of the whole war. So he saw that he could transform all the brass material he could get his hands on, which was to say, a near seemingly infinite source, into simple and effective candleholders. Thus the very first true Nagel Candleholder was born. However, this is just the beginning of the story.
JEREMIAH EIHOLZER
Some few years later, after all the rebuilding of Germany made a substantial difference, the sons, inspired by their fathers artistic metalwork, all applied to the Cologne Art School. All filled with passion for art and design in their own ways. One of the Nagel sons went on to become a painter and a sculptor, another a silversmith, but third one, Hans, was determined to pursue his father’s work, and served as CEO of the small family company. Not even 20 years had passed since the end of the war, when the son who directly filled his father’s role at his company met the architect and artist Werner Stoff in the design community of Cologne. Stoff at the time was a performing artist, but also had developed his own signature aesthetic of rounded objects, or as he described them; “items without corners”. The two artists found that they shared a love for design and their passion for art sparked a creative match. During a ski trip, Hans accidentally tumbled backwards and broke his fall with one hand, which left three finger impressions in the snow that Hans says to be the exact moment the idea struck him. He saw in it the perfect candleholder. Nagel told this to Stoff, and asked him to make a design for a candleholder with this concept, of three legs and three slots. It was then that the Stoff-Nagel candleholder was born. It launched with tremendous success in the late 60s, but has recently been unavailable in stores. However, the Danish design company Just Right resuscitated the piece, and is launching the timeless icon again for the generations to come.

hese are probably the most famous treats to come out of Sweden (besides the Plopp chocolate bar). This recipe is a quick dough which is easy to roll out so the kids can make lots of festive shapes. Every December, families across Scandinavia will sit around a table with a batch of dough, festive music on, making loads of cookies and baked goods for all the coming Sundays of Advent.
2 Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) Gas 6. Line several baking sheets with baking parchment. 3 On a floured surface, roll out the dough very thinly (around 2 mm/1/8 in. thick), and use cookie cutters to cut your desired shapes. Make sure they are thin biscuits. Place them on the lined baking sheets. 4 Bake in the preheated oven – each batch will take 5–6 minutes, depending on the thickness. The biscuits should be a darker shade of brown without being burnt. Remove from the oven and leave to cool before storing in an airtight container. 5 If you wish, you can let the kids loose with colourful icing/frosting. Icing/confectioners’ sugar mixed with beaten egg white and a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice makes the best decorative icing as it goes hard when it dries.

Black is a great base to accentuate colour and texture. I’ve used black dinnerware as the base to this look and then layered gold and pine on top. Adding texture – like the pine fronds and pompoms – helps add warmth. Layering fir tree branches down the centre of the table and entwining battery-operated fairy lights will create a stunning centrepiece, giving a cool Scandi feel as well as filling the room with a pine scent.
TIP 2
N A M E P L AC E S
A great tip is to always take a look in the decorations section to get some inspiration for your dining table. A favourite of mine is to use baubles as name places for the dinner table. Attach gift tags to each bauble as a name card and then guests can then also take the bauble away with them to decorate their own tree.

This is so easy to create. Lay a line of eucalyptus stems along the length of the table and intersperse with warm gold, copper or bronze baubles which reflect candlelight. The colours look incredible together and the eucalyptus gives off a great relaxing aroma. You can also add in fruits such as pomegranates, walnuts, oranges – here I’ve spray-painted some of them gold too. Then add a selection of candlesticks (marble or metallic) of different heights to create some atmospheric lighting.

THE HANGING D I S P L AY
I’ve used a small bunch of willow branches attached to two leather straps (or you can use ribbon) to hang above the table or kitchen counter. Select a colour palette of 2-3 colours (we’ve used gold and orange) and attach a selection of lightweight baubles to the branches at different heights using invisible thread. Here, we’ve also added in some miniature Christingles. Alternatively if you have a pendant light or chandelier, you can always hang baubles from them using the invisible thread.

1 Preheat the oven to fan 180°C, fan oven 160°, Gas Mark 4. Grease and line a 23cm square cake tins with baking paper, using a little butter. 2 Melt the remaining butter in a large saucepan over a low heat, without letting it get too hot. Remove from the heat, then add the orange juice and beaten eggs. Reserve the orange zest for the frosting. 3 Sift together the flour, salt, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and ground ginger in a mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar, carrots and courgettes, then add the melted mixture and stir together well.

imply because British organic carrots taste delicious. They are produced using only natural processes including crop rotation and the use of ladybirds to control pests – natural, sustainable soil fertility is encouraged through composting and rotation with legumes to provide nitrogen, rather than synthetic fertilisers. Organic crops can lead to increased intake of nutritionally desirable antioxidants, according to a University of Newcastle study. Organic farming minimises disruption to the natural environment; the UK government has said that organic farming is better for wildlife, causes lower pollution from sprays, produces less carbon dioxide and fewer dangerous wastes.

e loveChristmas.Like, really love it. It’s the diamond nestled among the grubby coals of an English winter, the thing that gives colour to those colourless months of grey skies and sodden ground. But there’s no denying Christmas is complicated. Years ago, we could enjoy the festive period in relatively straightforward style, complete with plastic trees, plastic decorations, plastic toys and every other throwaway (probably plastic) novelty the high street could muster. But those guilty times were also, ironically, more innocent. Many of us didn’t realise the impact of our actions – and our consumption. Now we do. And with rising awareness about the environmental effects of unfettered consumption comes a tricky relationship with this most wasteful of holidays. So how to create a Christmas brimming with magic and fun (not to mention toys) without wrecking the planet? Here are five simple (and easily achievable) starting steps...
1 . K E E P YO U R T R E E
P
otted trees are better for the planet, as they can go on absorbing carbon dioxide when they’re replanted in your garden after the holiday. But even if you don’t have the space to keep your tree forever (think how cool it is for kids to welcome a tree back into the home like an old friend, year after year), there are ways to ensure a cut tree doesn’t go to waste completely. Namely, your local council’s recycling programme or a homegrown alternative: chop your tree into logs and use them to fuel a fire or wood-burning stove. You’ll be releasing carbon dioxide into the air when you burn it, but if you buy your tree from a local, responsible provider – one who can assure you they plant a new tree for every one they sell – you’ll at least know that your tree’s replacement will absorb an equal amount.
ecorations provide ample opportunity to ditch synthetic materials and embrace natural, eco-friendly alternatives. Use beeswax or soy candles instead of paraffin ones, layer your tree with Scandi-style paper chains instead of tinsel and invest in keepsake decorations of brass, wood, paper and shatterproof glass. Kids will love getting crafty with wool, felt, cardboard and foil paper, making decorations you can treasure rather than trend-led, cheaply made tat that’s probably travelled from China to reach your tree. reetings cards appear to be on the decline, which is a shame in one sense – it’s always good to stay in touch. But we still send hundreds of millions every year, so if you fancy getting back in the game (or if you never got out of it), the key is to ensure your cards are printed with non-toxic inks on sustainably sourced paper. Cards you receive should of course be reused or recycled after the season – one tip is to save them for your kids to make new collage-style cards or gift tags the following year. Or you could move beyond the material realm entirely, and opt for digital greetings cards – which are usually much more costeffective too. C H EC K O UT • PAPIER POST for digital

4. GIFT LIST
U
nwanted gifts are depressing on every level, and each Christmas in the UK alone more than 80,000 tonnes of unwanted clothes – most of which will have come from the other side of the world – are sent straight to landfill. Surprises may carry a certain romance, but it’s worth getting your kids (and other loved ones) to provide some sort of list so as to avoid buying stuff they simply don’t want. When shopping, try to focus on locally produced gear that hasn’t got many miles under its belt. Organic materials are obviously better all-round, and for kids there are a host of independent businesses focused on producing top-notch toys from sustainably sourced materials. Failing all that, subscriptions to digital services (Netflix, Spotify etc.) are a safe bet.

he same rules apply here: opt for local, organic produce wherever possible. One study estimated that the average British Christmas dinner featured ingredients that had travelled a combined total of around 45,000 miles to make it to the table, so choosing (often better quality) seasonal groceries has definite upsides for the planet. But what of all the food that gets thrown away? Compost it. Compost bins are widely available or you could try donating your food waste to a local allotment. Failing that, invest in a food waste disposal unit – they’ll grind your organic matter so finely, it can eventually be recovered from the waste water and used as soil conditioner. ost shops we encounter are variations on a theme – and slight variations at that. The ones that make an impression are those which offer something more, acting as finders and curators rather than sellers of stuff we’ve already seen elsewhere. BoNordic offers just such a curated experience. The site’s strength lies in the way it combines an expert edit of treasures from brands we’ve loved for some time – Konges Sløjd, MarMar Copenhagen – with hitherto unknown goodies from design-led brands that are new to us. These discoveries include Studio Bundis, purveyor of cute-as-a-button organic cotton “buddy” animals, and Stories in Structures, whose forte is architectural wooden structures that encourage imaginative play. Another fresh find is By Lille Vilde, whose sustainable kids tableware centres on gently sculptural animal reliefs. Our current crush is for Lilla Gunga’s range of indoor activity pieces, swings and trapeze rings in beautifully restrained shades of white, birch and oak. Sure to keep mini acrobats amused for hours, they’re a great way for kids to stay active during the rainy days to come – and they look ace, too. L I V I N G | PETS
A DOG’S LIFE As we continue to humanise our animals, furniture for pets is becoming more and more stylish. HOME investigates Words P E N D L E H A R T E
I
n the 2011 census, an intriguing 16 per cent of pet owners reportedly counted their animals on their forms, while as many as 90 per cent of us see our pets as part of the family. A sizeable minority will even admit to loving their pet more than their partner. And in the world of retail, thriving fashion, beauty and food industries sell cashmere jumpers for cockapoos and collections of cat couture. There is beer and even prosecco for dogs, gluten-free pet food, CBD for pets and an extensive world of therapists and whisperers to heal their woes. So it’s inevitable that the design industry is turning its focus towards what used to be simply the dog basket but is now a whole range of pet ‘furniture’. Whether dogs should sit on sofas might be controversial but Made’s stylishly formed and upholstered new dog sofas are a cut above the traditional dog bed. Or perhaps they’re designed to be in addition to a dog bed – maybe the dog sofa is designed for lounging and watching television in much the same way
80
as a regular sofa. Maybe the whole point is to get your dog off your sofa. Either way, it’s important for a dog to be able to feel comfortable in front of Netflix, and even more important for the experience to be compatible designwise with the rest of an interior; in this vein the new collection at Made includes stylish new feeding bowls in marble and copper too. Cats are catered to with structures that enable climbing as well as cosiness, while remaining true to Made’s pared back and stylish aesthetic. Ikea offers a cat house on legs – but only in Japan and the US. Elsewhere, the pet furniture market includes memory foam mattresses, Chesterfield-style diminutive sofas and even tiny bunk beds for miniature dogs. Mattress companies Casper and Otty make special dog mattresses that come in three sizes – Casper’s is eligible for the 100 night trial that the company offers for humans too. Pet comfort is here to stay.

he Art Deco period was one of innovation and iconic design, and evokes a timeless style, which tends to be extremely decorative, fun and colourful. Posters – once described as ‘a visual shout’ – proved an attractive, effective means of promotion and ‘at-a-glance’ display. In today’s digital age, poster advertisements are a thing of the past, but Art Deco posters remain as popular as ever, largely because the clean and uncluttered Art Deco style works so perfectly with modern interiors. Pullman Editions designs and publishes striking original posters in limited editions that capture the enduring appeal of Art Deco. Their newly-commissioned posters feature glamorous winter sports and summer resorts around the world, as well as the world’s greatest historic automobiles. Evoking memories of holidays and special occasions, their modern take on the Art Deco classics provide an affordable yet elegant way to decorate your home.
How to display Art Deco posters at home
Words G E O R G I N A K H AC H A D O U R I A N
The clean and uncluttered Art Deco style works perfectly with modern interiors
Although Pullman Editions’ posters are inspired by those from the 1920s and 30s, they have been brought up to date with a much more vivid colour palette; period posters often include a more limited number of colours, largely because this reduced expense. Although vintage posters were designed to be eye-catching to promote new travel routes or destinations, most were never designed to be hung in people’s homes, so tend to be less decorative than Pullman’s modern alternatives. First and foremost, Pullman Editions’ posters are designed to be decorative. Another part of their appeal is that they evoke memories of being in a certain place at a certain time. Most of their customers choose posters based on the resort or car that they depict – they have the ability to transport the viewer back there – whether it be a perfect day’s skiing in the Alps, sunning on a pristine beach on holiday or enjoying a glass of Champagne on the terrace of a favourite restaurant.

Sound of silence
Is your home blighted by noise? Find a solution in Hugo Carter Silent Windows Words P E N D L E H A R T E
to combat the internal noise. The windows they installed have transformed the feel of the flat, which is now a noticeably quiet and peaceful space. The secret of Silent Windows lies in the precision of fitting the window to the frame, and fitting the frame to the aperture. Poor fitting can spoil any noise-reducing properties of regular windows, and Hugo Carter’s expertise comes from lengthy research into the ‘science of silence’ at Southampton University. His clients live on busy roads and under flightpaths – and their lives have been transformed by becoming able to shut the noise out of their homes. But it’s not just windows – timber front doors and glass garden doors are all available with the Silent Windows treatment. They say: “Of all the investments that you can make in your home, this may be the one that pays off the most handsomely. You may have many reasons to love the property you call ‘home’ – but how can you and your family fully enjoy it if your home is blighted by noise?” hugocarter.co.uk

hen Nick Butt bought a London pied a terre close to Victoria station, he was planning to make his commute to Sussex as easy as possible. But the apartment was so close to the station that the noise became almost unbearable – and multiple studies have shown the negative effects on health that can be caused by regular exposure to elevated sound levels. Not only can there be sleep disturbance and hearing damage, but long term consequences can include heart disease and immune system impairment. Hugo Carter Silent Windows has worked closely with the Institute of Acoustics to devise a system that improves on double and even triple glazing for sound insulation. When they were commissioned to compile a noise survey on Butt’s Victoria apartment, they analysed the precise sound signature in each room and devised a bespoke strategy

’was the night before Christmas, almost three decades ago, and Dennis Severs had lit every last candle on his tree. His house in Spitalfields was festooned with Victorian cherubs, his table laid with winter fruits. The scene was illuminated by candlelight only. When Severs’ friend, David Milne, arrived, he brought with him the only modern interloper to the scene: a small, portable television, an exception made for this one time of the year. ‘We turned it on,’ recalls Milne, reclining in a winged chair in the drawing room. ‘And just at that moment, a curious passer-by knocked on the window, keen to see inside. I never saw Dennis move so fast. He literally flung himself over the television to hide our guilty secret!’ This is just one in a catalogue of anecdotes that Milne, now the custodian of 18 Folgate Street, has accumulated over the 30 years he has spent in the house, first as a guest and now as its curator. The late Dennis Severs, a Californian ex-lawyer, bought the property in 1978, having already by then turned his back on the law – and convention – in favour of a more eccentric life, making the money he needed by driving a 19th-century carriage around London and telling his passengers stories of the families who had once lived in the grand houses of Mayfair and Belgravia. Spitalfields was home to a young and creative community, and 30-year-old Severs was drawn in. So when this now Grade II-listed Georgian house came up for sale, he bought it to live in – as opposed to as a museum piece. ‘At that time, what he saw was a 19th-century layer on top of an 18th-century layer’, says Milne. ‘But he travelled through the rooms and got a sense of what it would have
92
been and could be again, so he bought it from property investment company, British Land, and reconstructed it from the inside.’ An aesthete and collector, 18 Folgate Street’s newest incumbent began to amass period pieces while eschewing electricity and gas, preferring to live instead by candlelight as its 18th-century inhabitants would have done. A great believer in stories, he channelled the spirit of the age via a family of French immigrant Huguenot weavers – the Jervises – whose characters Milne continues to keep alive. ‘The Jervises were a real family who lived in the area, though not actually in this house,’ he explains. ‘Dennis created their story – he visualised Isaac Jervis as having been spirited away from France by his wet nurse, while his family was persecuted and slaughtered by the Catholic Louis XV. Then, under the care of British relatives, Isaac became a wealthy master silk weaver. Via these characters, Dennis created these secret tableaux. Everything he did felt real because the point at which Dennis stopped at the Jervises began was completely blurred.’ Severs’ house soon became something of whispered legend among the cognoscenti. People knew him from his carriage-riding days and duly followed him to what was then a slummy district of town. Before long, he began hosting theatrical tours of his home which now, as then, is crowded with artefacts: dressers festooned with crockery; four-poster beds shrouded in cascading red and orange velvet, rumpled as if its owner had just got up; fruit and etched decanters of wine; and at Christmas, a tree whose boughs heave with glass baubles and treasured decorations, lovingly dusted off year after year. The whole thing is bathed in soft, flickering candlelight. It is like stepping into a living Baroque painting. The experience is all the more animated for its special effects, which originated with Severs himself. On his tours, guests were under strict instruction to remain with their host at all times – and silent. ‘This was Dennis’ house,’ says

Milne. ‘He didn’t have to follow any rules. He would eject people; if you looked shady you didn’t come in. But it was always magical. These tableaux came completely alive with sound effects and his narration. Guests would hear horses clattering outside, or catch voices or the sounds of smashing plate in the next room. Then as you entered the next room, you’d see the broken plate responsible, or smell a just-extinguished pipe. You never quite knew what was going to happen.’ Severs even issued a warning on his website: sensitive souls were welcome, but his house did not exist as entertainment for the bored wives of bankers from Kensington. ‘We would not do that now, but I understand why he did. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were a lot of snobs who derided the house because it wasn’t historically accurate. They missed the point, which was the love and joy that had been lavished upon the place.’ Happily others were more receptive, including David Hockney, who ranked it as ‘great opera’. Even so, Severs was perceptive enough to know that full appreciation for what he’d done would likely be posthumous. He always said, ‘When I’m dead, they’ll like me.’ Indeed, since his death 19 years ago, the house has been hailed as a living work of art. ‘Before he died, Dennis gave an interview saying he thought the house might be ephemeral and would not survive after him. My
taking over was unspoken,’ says Milne, a set designer by training. ‘I understood it had to be more professional to survive, but now I know, barring environmental disaster, this house will be here in 100 years.’ Visitor numbers have swelled in the intervening years. Every Monday and Wednesday see the inquisitive piling in, many of whom, says Milne are visibly moved. ‘It is a place that stirs up emotion, for all of us. I felt very moved by a delightful American family who came with their twentysomething son, who was completely blind. I suggested they arrive early and I told him the whole story. I got him to touch everything – something you could never do in other historic properties. It’s a very sensual place; the smell of the fire, of the fruit, the sound of the clock ticking, the horse and carriage. Later I got a letter saying it had been his best Christmas ever.’ There could be few more fitting tributes to the extraordinary house that Dennis Severs – a man who truly kept Christmas in his heart – made than that. DENNIS SEVERS HOUSE The annual Christmas installation runs from 25 November until 4 January at 18 Folgate Street, E1. Booking is essential dennissevershouse.co.uk/christmas

W H AT TO D O
THE AREA
This corner of Devon is all about surfing, though walkers, wild-swimmers and sandcastlearchitects will find it equally rich in pleasures. And for hardened land-lubbers? The sun-dappled joys of Exmoor are a short drive away.
Saunton Sands lies a few minutes west of Braunton, a small town blessed with all you need – from surf shops and supermarkets to delis and pharmacies. Five minutes up the coast road is Croyde, another surfer’s paradise with a famously consistent break in its small bay and a brilliant deli-cum-coffee shop in the village centre. The Kings Arms in Georgeham, a few minutes beyond Croyde, was recommended to us as the best place to eat within easy reach of the chalet.
T H E H OT E L Chalet Saunton was a long time in the making. Over ten years, in fact – or at least that’s how long the local council blocked the owner’s attempts to make anything of the site. Eventually released from planning purgatory, the newly minted apart-hotel is well worth the wait. Standing on a low cliff overlooking North Devon’s Saunton Sands, the chalet-style property is divided into six spacious three-bed apartments and a two-bed penthouse suite, each of which looks out over lawned gardens to the breathtaking beach below. Interiors are pale, uncluttered and stylishly minimal. The oceanic splendour of the Devon coast seems to sit beside you in the living room, or in the roll-top bath beside the master bedroom window. 94
Take a deep breath before you arrive at Chalet Saunton, because you’ll be positively winded by the panorama that awaits. Saunton Sands is three miles of golden beach washed by the Atlantic and bounded by Britain’s most extensive dune system. On a sunny day or as night creeps across the sand, it’s a jaw-dropping view. The chalet’s owner used to live here – the hotel is built on the site of his childhood home – and you find yourself wondering how he could bear to give it up, even partially. Sitting on a rattan chair on the apartment balcony, watching the tiny shapes of swimmers and surfers come and go, you can’t help but be astonished that England still possesses beauty of such purity and on such a mesmerising scale.

My Style ELLA JONES FOUNDER OF A NEW TRIBE BOUTIQUE anewtribe.co.uk
MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION... I love to travel - my highlights have been Japan and a US road trip to California and Arizona, but Morocco is definitely my favourite holiday destination - I could never get bored of it. It’s so beautiful with so many interesting crafts and artefacts everywhere, lovely welcoming people, beautiful weather and culturally so different from the UK. I love the buzz of Marrakech but also the more remote areas outside Marrakech and in the Atlas Mountains.
PAUL SMITH AW18
M Y ST Y L E ICON... I love Talitha Getty’s style - in particular the images of her taken in Morocco in the 1960s – her style still looks totally relevant today
MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER... I have quite eclectic taste and so don’t have one particular favourite designer, but the designer that inspired me the most growing up was Paul Smith. He’s from the same area of Nottingham as I am and I always looked up to what he has achieved and have loved his eclectic taste and how he can take inspiration from so many different things all over the world and apply this to his design in an original way.
MY FAVOURITE PIECE FROM THE CURRENT STOCK... I’m obsessed with Azilal Rug 291 - I love the way that its a slight different take on the classic design and the colour combinations in this are this are rare in Moroccan rugs. I also love the Kana x A New Tribe collaboration (above) as its completely original and one of a kind - the irregular bold pattern on the glaze design combined with the sculptural shapes couldn’t fit in more with the A New Tribe aesthetic.
MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF ART... Just about everything by Brancusi - I love objects and so the sculptures really appeal to me, combined with the tribal and almost primitive references in lots of his pieces.
