T
he summer can be tough in the UAE, what with the scorching heat and all. Especially if you’re pregnant (not that that’s always comfortable either!). That’s why we’ve focused on maternity wear in this issue, bringing you the latest looks from leading fashion retailer Seraphine (page 34). We’ve also picked up on a trend that’s seen a surprising resurgence – power dressing – and how expecting mamas can make it work, too (page 32). For those of us already leading our charges through the hot months, we’re here to tell you summer in the UAE can also be fun. Particularly when so many of the country’s hotels, spas, restaurants and attractions are offering great discounts, and while the kids have their pick of interesting summer camps. Th roughout the issue, we’ve chosen to highlight a few of the deals and activities we think you should get involved with. We’re also proud to introduce another brand-new column to this issue. Mum-of-one, Alex Hunter, gets honest about motherhood and the many challenges it realistically brings. Turn to page 25 to read her revealing account of her fi rst few months as a mum. Stay cool, keep hydrated, and enjoy the summer folks!

mamah o o d INTERVIEW
~
J
“I’M IMMENSELY PROUD OF MYSELF NOW WHEN I GO INTO SCHOOLS AND HELP CHILDREN TO HANDLE MY BEETLES”
ust a few years ago, Brightonbased children’s author Maya Gabrielle (pen name M. G. Leonard) was terrified of insects. But now she loves them. In fact, she loves them so much she even looks after two of her own Rainbow Stag Beetles called Motty and Hector. And she wrote a series of bestselling books about them. Her first one, Beetle Boy, came out in 2016 and it quickly won numerous awards and nominations. Then two more novels – as part of a trilogy – came soon after, to much acclaim. Before all that, however, she also worked in the music industry and theatre. Basically, Maya is a pretty creative lady, so we chat with her about her work, her family, and how we can make sure our kids grow up creative, too…
Q What are you working on at the moment? A I have a non-fiction book called The Beetle Collector’s Handbook coming out [in September 2018] and I’d like to produce a small book of poems for children about beetles too. I’m currently writing a contemporary fairy story about climate change called December’s Children. Q Where do you find your inspiration for your new projects? A It’s a collision of thoughts, observations and something that is troubling me. I want to bring into the world books that have the capacity to create the desire for societal change in the young. I felt the way we portray invertebrates in our cultures belies the environmental importance and good the creatures do, so I wrote the Beetle Boy books. I also believe that climate change is an important topic that’s difficult for us to talk about with our children, so I want to write a story that enables that. Q Why did you decide to write about insects when you were afraid of them? A When I was afraid of insects, I never took the time to look at them in detail or learn about them. I was too busy running away. When I began studying them, I was astonished by their beauty and infinite variety. You could never be bored spending time with beetles, and I haven’t been. I’ve found beetles to be one of the most inspiring subjects, which is how I’ve managed to produce four books about them.
~
Q Is it important to face your fears? A It is liberating to overcome a fear, and I’m immensely proud of myself now when I go into schools and help children to handle my beetles. It’s something I never dreamed I could do. It has made me feel that, perhaps, I’m capable of doing other things. It has made me bold. Q Why do you think fostering creativity in children is so important today? A Creativity is the way humans work through problems and express complex emotions. Cultural product is an exploration of what it is to be human. For humanity to progress and survive, creativity is essential. Combine creativity with any one of the STEM subjects and you get real innovation. It would be ludicrous not to foster creativity in our children. It is of vital importance that we do so, but, most of all, children love to create. It brings them great joy, builds their confidence and develops their ability to express themselves and therefore empathise with others. Q What tips do you have for parents looking to encourage their kids to read for pleasure? A My oldest son was what they call a “reluctant reader” and we did a number of things that helped with his reading. Firstly, the books I encouraged him to read on his own were highly illustrated – either graphic novels or
the Tom Gates books. The pictures helped him with the words. Secondly, we would read a chapter book together every night before bed, taking it in turns to read aloud. I had a shelf in his bedroom where we’d put all the books he’d completed so he could see the shelf fill up and his confidence in reading grew. Q How do you encourage your own sons to be creative? A I don’t think you need to do much to encourage creativity in children. You just need to give them the space, time, tools and attention. In our dining room we have a cupboard of paints and paper. My youngest will often go to it and pull out his pens and start drawing. We visit a bookshop or the library every weekend. There is a constant flow of reading material through our house and if the boys don’t enjoy a book, I don’t make them finish it. When I’m writing, my boys will often come and work beside me on homework (the oldest) or making their own books (the youngest), which can make it hard to write, but it is delightful. And my husband is musical, too, so we try and make noise together when possible. None of it is scheduled or enforced. Creativity just happens, because children naturally want to do it. The Beetle Collector’s Handbook by M.G. Leonard comes out in September 2018; mgleonard.com July / August 201 8

WORK
We chat to Sarah Jones, mama and CEO of Sprii.com, about running an e-commerce business in the UAE…
W o r d s K AT Y G I L L E T T
SARAH STARTED A BUSINESS WHEN SHE WAS AGED 14
B
ritish expat Sarah Jones was bitten by the entrepreneur bug when she was just 14 years old. That’s when she set up a profitable eBay business importing items from around the world to sell in the UK, and it ignited in her a love for e-commerce. Years later, she found herself in the Middle East, thanks to a move from Deloitte London, where she spotted a gap in the online shopping market. Today, she’s CEO of Sprii.com, the website selling “everything for mums”. And she’s a mum now herself. But she’s managed to take a break from it all to tell us about her recent rebrand and new family addition… Q You started at just 14 selling products on eBay for a profit. Where did that drive and entrepreneurial mindset come from at such a young age? A I think deep down if you end up being an entrepreneur, you were born with it in your DNA. For me, it wasn’t about making money, it was about “doing business” and from a very young age I loved the thrill of buying and selling, and eBay gave me that platform to start.
Q What then attracted you to the mother and baby market? A Prior to Sprii.com, I was working in Mergers & Acquisitions and came across a lot of businesses in the e-commerce space. However, in the “Mums” vertical there were limited options and a lack of availability of international products in the Middle East online. We launched offering an authentic experience from start to finish – excellent navigation on the website, the widest product offering at competitive prices and an incredible Customer Service team who always go above and beyond. This wasn’t being done by anyone else. Q Why did you decide to rebrand Mini Exchange to Sprii? A We realised that rebranding presented us with an incredibly exciting opportunity to take the business to the next level. We decided to not only change the look and feel of our website, but the name as well. We had become synonymous with being the destination for baby products, however our category and product range had expanded far beyond that. It became an exercise in re-educating our customers on just how much we had to offer; we were no longer just a site for baby products but instead a destination for all mums to shop all their needs. Whether this was pre-pregnancy vitamins, baby essentials, postnatal fitness gear, baking equipment for those cakemaking mornings at the weekend – we had it all and the best selection of brands in the region. Q How are you finding juggling all of your responsibilities with a brand-new baby? A Being an entrepreneur means being switched on 24/7 – there’s no off button and, as anyone who knows me will tell you, I’m never off my phone! For your business to succeed you have to give it your all – it’s a necessary sacrifice and I’m lucky enough that the people around me accept and support this without question. Balancing a baby and Sprii.com is only possible because I have an amazing team and an amazing support network at home. Q What advice do you have for other working mamas? A Enjoy the organised chaos and get used to juggling! It’s not easy, so don’t expect it to be, but having a mind that’s active and still learning, and a family to rush home to, gives me the best of both worlds. July / August 201 8

Telling it like it is…
Asking for help Alexandra Hunter on how to survive the early days – and trials – of motherhood
T
he thing about parenting is, it is literally impossible to understand how hard it really is until you are in the thick of it. I remember thinking about the realities of having my own baby before Seb arrived, and I thought it would be wonderful, relaxing and frankly a bit of a rest from my previously rather hectic life and work. How absurd. When you first hold your first baby, you’re on the back foot already; exhausted either from surgery or labour – too often both – and with no clear manual for what will be the most stressful and rewarding job of your life. Add hormones to the mix, plus lack of sleep and a lot of pain, and it really can seem almost impossible. Having always wanted a baby, I assumed I would be a brilliant mama from minute one; that it would all come
naturally to me and that my baby and I would wander round in a cocoon of love for a year. The reality, needless to say, was very different. I wish I had asked for more help from the outset, but I have never been very good at asking for help – I thought asking for help would indicate to others that I was failing. When my maternity nurse first came to the house, I had been crying all morning, exhausted and with a hormone shift due to my milk (rather ineffectually) coming in. Rather than crying on this kind woman who was there to help, I stopped crying before she arrived, put on my make-up and told her I was fine, everything
~
COLUMN
was going brilliantly. When she left, I started crying again. I had an irrational fear that if I told her how I was feeling, someone might take my beautiful baby away from me. Being a new mama is hard; it’s a shock to the whole system both mentally and physically. I had always been capable and competent and suddenly I wasn’t. I remember a day when Seb was about six weeks old. All I wanted to achieve was to remove my old nail varnish and hang out the laundry, but didn’t manage either. My partner came home and asked me if I’d had a lovely day and again, I couldn’t stop crying. I hadn’t had a lovely day. I felt like I was failing where millions of other women found it easy and that I had lost myself. At which point, my mother was flown in like Mary Poppins and, with her help, I started to find things a little easier. When people came to visit us in the early days I would frantically bake a cake for their arrival and talk about how delightful everything was. What I should have done was allow no one in the house who wasn’t prepared to take over, feed me and put the kettle on themselves. A close friend lived nearby and when Seb was two months old she came round and told me to leave the baby with her and go out for three hours. She insisted. She did this every week for months and it was amazing. I went swimming and sat in cafés reading magazines that weren’t about babies and began to find myself again. I now try to do this for friends who live locally when they’ve had a baby, as I know how imperative help is. We might not all have a village, but we all have people who love us and who would be happy to help. Ask for help – it doesn’t mean you’re failing. You’re not: you’re doing brilliantly.

“N OW I’M IN MY SECOND TRIMESTER I CAN STAY U P LATER THAN 8PM!”
~
FIRST-TIME MAMA…
Found the Bump!
Our resident expecting mama talks us through the trials and tribulations in the next phase of pregnancy…
I
f you read my first-ever Absolutely Mama Emirates column in June’s issue, you will know I was desperately waiting for my cute little baby bump to appear (#FirstTrimesterProblems), so it didn’t look like I had just indulged in one too many iftar buffets this Ramadan. Now, as I write my second-ever column, I’m in my second trimester, which I’ve decided to call The Era of the Bump. No one really tells you much about the second trimester; only that you’ll be out of the nausea-fuelled first three months and feeling much more human – which is true… One day I woke up and managed to keep my eyes open longer than three seconds before dozing off again! I could suddenly walk up the stairs without feeling like I needed a nap! And I can now stay up past 8pm! It’s wild. I started this less-trying trimester with my Pregnancy+ app questioning
W o r d s F R A N K I E H I LT O N
my gum health, filling me in on incontinence, and introducing me to the possibility of hemorrhoids. To date, I’ve been lucky to avoid all of this. But that doesn’t mean I’ve been devoid of all the other good stuff…
Bacne
As my husband good-humouredly refers to it – aggressive acne across my back and shoulders. I’ve always been blessed with my skin, never having much more than a chin blemish pre-period, so this came as a bit of a shock. I try my best to keep the area clean, and Google has lots of hints and tricks on how to tackle it, but I’m also aware it will clear up post-pregnancy. As long as the baby is healthy and happy, what’s a little bacne, eh?
Wardrobe wars
I know… I wrote a whole column about hurrying up the bump… but
here I am with said bump, and it’s impossible to dress! I have a daily war with my wardrobe. Something, which in my head looks adorable with the bump, makes me look like a dressed-up potato. Just recently a girlfriend and I giggled, squished and squirmed as we tried to pull a pair of trousers over the bump. It didn’t happen.
Weight gain
Now this is obvious. Of course we gain weight in pregnancy, we are growing a small human, but we (or at least I) also spent the first trimester eating only chunky chips and ice cream (with the odd kiwi for nutritional value). I’ve found this hard – I’ve gone from someone who went to the gym two to three times a week and was a relatively conscious eater, to gaining six kilos in five months. My baby-mama friends assure me it falls off postpregnancy, and to enjoy the chunky chips… I’m trusting them. There are also my hormones (I’m fully irrational two times a day), infections, aches and pains, and my strange determination to only sleep on the left-hand side, but, as always, I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. I’m absolutely loving being pregnant, and really enjoying being able to share my experience with you all – and say: you are not alone! We are in this together. Now where’s that secondtrimester pregnancy glow I’ve heard so much about? I guess it must be hidden under my bacne... July / August 201 8

MAKE Maternity Style Work for You Expecting mums can adopt the power dressing trend, too... Wo r d s H E L E N BA RO N
F
or obvious reasons, summer style tends to revolve around bikinis, straw hats and sarongs – but not this year. Springsummer 2018 has seen the surprising resurgence of one trend all women can get behind: power dressing. So we’ve spoke to personal stylist Lauren Manville, who has a wealth of experience when it comes to helping women find power through style. Here are her top tips for curating a peerless pregnancy wardrobe...
Don’t Depend On Jersey
It’s comfy and easy but also unforgiving. Also, be careful of prints on jersey – they can look cheap.
Think about your neckline
Showing décolletage can feel good. Be bold and try a couple of different necklines to find out which complements your growing frame. From V-neck to round-neck, from square to cowl to wrap to diamond – there’s a winner for us all. 32

Invest in some good swimsuits
These don’t need to break the bank. Thankfully, there’s been a swimwear revolution of late, so there are lots of great pieces to select from.
I appreciate that you might not fancy all-over neon pink, but do embrace colour. Everyone shines in their right hue. Hiding in a darkcoloured tent-like piece will do nothing for your confidence and outlook. Whether bright or subtle, do take the plunge.
Wear woven
Woven pieces will flatter your figure and feel more chic.
Layer up
A nice way to break up the bump is to layer – this could be using a bomber jacket, a tank top or a shirt. I’m always layered up as I think it makes your eye dance around the frame and is aesthetically pleasing. If even the thought of layering up makes you feel claustrophobic or constricted, you can always cheat by wearing a top with in-built layers.
Wear print
I think print can look gorgeous on pregnant women – checks, polka dots, leopard – they all work, it doesn’t always have to be stripes; although I’m aware this is what’s mostly on offer. A print can make clothes feel like an outfit, so don’t shy away.
Wear your confidence
When a body changes in such a dramatic way, although beautiful and brilliant, it can leave you feeling a little disconnected from not only your body but your image, sense of self and self-confidence. Your body is doing the most incredible thing, creating a human, so please feel smug and respect it! I know not everyone is lucky enough to have that pregnancy glow, so make sure to accentuate the bits that give you the most confidence. Wear what brings you confidence.

fter leading what, in retrospect, looks like little short of a revolution in the design of kids’ clothing, Mini Rodini is now upping the ante and leading the charge for sustainable style. The springsummer swimwear range combines all the brand signatures loved by kidswear connoisseurs: graphic prints, illustrated animal motifs, bold use of colour and versatile, street-conscious styling. Deep oceanic blues are enlivened by polka dot-style bubble patterns while beach donkey emblems adorn summer hats. Matching swim bloomers and rash vests feature darting swallows in soft pink and pale lime, and UPF 50+ protective sunsuits star on-trend leopard print. The most exciting feature is, however, the least visible: each piece in the range is mostly made using recycled polyamide fibres from plastic waste – discarded carpets, production detritus and out-of-use fishnets. You wouldn’t guess it from the softness of the fabrics, but these garments have been around the block a bit, in other forms – the block being the planet’s seas and waterways. What this means is that Mini Rodini swimwear isn’t just fit for the ocean: it’s helping to clean it up. A step on from using organic cotton (which Mini Rodini always have), we think it’s pretty visionary. Let’s hope it becomes another trend. minirodini.com

’m 35 weeks pregnant and I cannot believe I’ve waited until now to go for a prenatal massage. From the moment I step out of the elevator at SensAsia Urban Spa at Palm Jumeirah’s Golden Mile Galleria I feel better than I have all trimester. The welcome I get is very warm. Dim lights, lush smells and soft music make for a calming atmosphere. I’m asked if there are any areas I’d like to focus on and if I’m comfortable – which, being in my third trimester, I am not (on this day it’s the back and belly), but that’s what I’m here for, right? The 90-minute massage treatment, which uses hot sweet almond oil, just whizzes by. My therapist always makes sure I’m in a suitable position as she massages my sides, belly (gently, of course) and face. When I feel a little hot, the temperature is instantly altered. I even fall asleep more than once, which is a fi rst for me during a massage. Any discomfort I was feeling at the beginning of the treatment soon disappears. Once it’s all over, I’m led to a gorgeous relaxation area and given some ginger tea as I slowly come back to reality. I leave keen to treat myself to this again before baby arrives! It’s a must-try. sensasiaspas.com

ooking with kids is a fun experience but, as every parent knows, it can escalate quickly from Instagram-worthy to dramatically wrong. Here are five little hacks to get to the kitchen prepared and avoid tantrums for both little sous-chefs and chefs, followed by two recipes to start you off…
DOUBLE THE CLOCK
Pairing up with a little sous-chef inevitably means that you won’t get around as swiftly as you would by yourself. You will have to explain how to carry out tasks safely, you want them to understand the ingredients they’re using and you’ll probably have to stop them touching the hot oven. Just accept it, factor in a lot of extra time and don’t get discouraged: the more they cook with you the quicker and more confident they’ll become.
ACCEPT THE MESS
Cooking with kids is all about the fun, the learning experience and the tasty food – not the presentation! Your end result might not be as pretty as the picture on the recipe, but serve them up to Grandma and she won’t mind wonky cupcakes or smushed icing, as long as they are baked by loving little hands.
SUIT UP
In a chef uniform, of course! Build up a whole ritual that includes washing hands and dressing in your chef whites. Any washing machine-friendly garment will do, or even an old T-shirt of yours. If your little souschef gets passionate about cooking together, you can consider splurging a little and get matching aprons.
MAKE SPACE
In the
Kitchen
The three ladies behind My Little Sous Chef show us how easy it is to get your kids involved in the cooking process – and enjoy it
54
|
A task like mixing dough or batter is something that most little sous-chefs can accomplish, but even the most disciplined helper will cause the odd splash or splatter from time to time. Give them a nice big bowl for mixing and, if you want to go the extra mile, use old newspapers to cover up surfaces.
GO CHILD-FREE
The ultimate hack. If your kid is acting up or is not interested in cooking, don’t force it. Cooking with kids is meant to be a new and exciting game, so if the situation becomes stressful for both chef and little sous-chef, it’s not worth it anymore. Distract your little one with a toy or a colouring book and leave the actual cooking for another time.

Bean Tacos
I n g r e d i e n t s :
100g butter • 200g caster sugar • 300g plain flour • 1 egg • 1 tbsp vanilla extract • 400g custard • blueberries • strawberries • banana
D i r e c t i o n s : 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C. Cut the softened butter into small cubes and put them into a bowl. 2 Add the sugar and mix with your hands until smooth. Add the egg and keep on mixing with your hands. Gradually add the flour and the vanilla extract. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, then wrap it with cling fi lm and leave in the fridge for an hour. 3 Grease the tart cases with butter and lightly dust with flour. Roll out the pastry to line both the base and sides of the tart cases. It should be roughly 3mm thick. 4 Once the tart cases are lined, cover the pastry with baking paper and fi ll with baking beans or dried beans. Blind bake at 180°C for 15 mins in the upper third of the oven. 5 Remove from the oven and allow to completely cool. Once cool, fi ll the tarts with the custard, decorate with fruit and dust with icing sugar. Ta s k s f o r yo u r L i t t l e S o u s C h e f : 1 Add the sugar to the butter and mix. 2 Add the vanilla, egg and flour and knead. 3 Roll out the pastry. 4 Line the tart cases with the pastry. 5 Fill the tarts with the custard. 6 Decorate the tarts with fruit.
Hands-on time: 35 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes Total time: 40 minutes Serves: 4
Ingredients:
125g plain flour • 60ml cold water • 400g canned red beans • 1 cup grated cheddar • 2 tomatoes • 1 cucumber • 1 avocado • 1 bell pepper • 60g lettuce • 2 tbsp olive oil • salt For the side: 2 avocados • 1 bunch coriander • 2 mild chillies • 2 tomatoes • 1 onion • juice of ½ lime
Directions: For the dough
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C. Mix the flour, water and oil in a bowl with a pinch of salt. Use a wooden spoon to blend all the ingredients, and then start kneading until you get a smooth dough. Make a ball with the dough, wrap it in cling fi lm and leave it to rest for 20 minutes. 2 Dust the work surface with flour, divide the dough into eight balls, flatten them between your hands and then roll them with a rolling pin to a 1mm thick. If the dough is sticky, sprinkle some flour over the rolling pin as well. 3 Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and cook the tortillas for two minutes on each side. As soon as you remove each tortilla from the pan, fold it between two objects to give it a shell shape and leave it until it has cooled down. If you prefer your tortillas soft and pliable, stack them on a plate and cover them with a wet cloth, so they won’t dry.
For the filling 1 Drain the canned beans. Wash the vegetables and cut them into cubes. Shred the lettuce. 2 Mix all the vegetables in a bowl, add the beans and season with oil and salt.
3 Fill the tacos with the veggie mix and sprinkle with grated cheddar.
For the guacamole sauce 1 Peel the avocados, remove the stones and mash them in a bowl. 2 Cut the chillies in half, deseed and chop them. Wash the tomatoes and cut them into cubes. Chop the onion and the coriander. 3 Add the chillies, coriander, tomatoes and onion to the mashed avocados and mix well. Add a little water and lime juice and mix with a spoon.
Ta s k s f o r yo u r Little Sous Chef: 1 Pour the flour into a bowl with the oil, salt and water and mix. 2 Knead into a dough and make a ball. 3 Divide into 8 balls and press them between your hands. 4 Roll out the balls with a rolling pin. 5 Spoon the veggie fi lling into the cooked tacos. 6 Sprinkle with grated cheddar.

As the director of Kibsons, the online home delivery service for fresh groceries, she oversees all financial and operational aspects of the company, which employs a team of 500 and takes care of 2,000 orders daily across the UAE. She’s been working there for 10 years now, but before that she got her MBA from the London Business School, worked in the UK as a project analyst for Barclays Global Investors, and joined KPMG in Dubai in Audit and Assurance – among many other just as impressive career moves she’s systematically added to her resume. And she’s done much of that while raising three children (now thriving teenagers). Q What has been the most significant milestone for you at Kibsons so far? A Breaking the legacy of being wholesalers/distributors for nearly four decades and launching the e-commerce platform to extend the wholesale freshness, quality and prices to thousands of customers directly is certainly a significant milestone for Kibsons. Q There has been a huge shift towards buying local and eating more plantbased in the UAE lately. What are your thoughts on these trends, and why
– in your opinion – have they become so important to UAE residents in particular recently? A Fruits and vegetables are a very important part of a well-balanced, healthy diet. People are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of nutrition and fitness, and how these contribute to their physical wellbeing. The Government of Dubai has been supportive with numerous fitness challenges, marathons and aquathlons across the region. It’s so refreshing and encouraging to see a huge movement and trend towards living a healthy
lifestyle across the UAE, and this serves as a great environment for the children growing up in this region. Q What changes has Kibsons made to its offerings in the past year? A In addition to our wide range of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat products – both organic and conventional – Kibsons now also offers a wide range of portioned seafood, homemade sourdough breads, organic dairy, eggs, spices and oils, imported honeys, healthy snacks, pastas, breakfast cereals and an assortment of health foods. quality, healthy options convenient for our customers. Q What is the biggest, most regular challenge you face at work? A Achieving a high level of customer satisfaction is our priority and a regular challenge for us. From making sure their online experience is user-friendly, quick and convenient to ensuring their items are packed and transported in temperature-controlled vehicles is an ongoing challenge and process of continuous improvement at work. Q You’ve had an impressive career so far. What has always driven you to succeed? A My passion for learning keeps me excited and motivated at work and my desire to use my knowledge and gifts to make a difference out there. Whether it is in the form of running a new business project, creating jobs, guiding
staff or making healthy eating easy and convenient for families, especially children, drives me to excel each day. Q How do you manage the responsibilities of work and family life? A Life is all about finding the balance between multiple responsibilities and all the things we desire to achieve. I don’t really think about how my life has “changed” with kids, I just welcome and enjoy all new gifts in life enthusiastically. I must admit that I push myself to manage time better, stay positive with a more problem-solving attitude because at work and at home there are people who depend on me and I take my responsibilities extremely seriously. In order to keep my mental wellbeing boosted, I am careful to surround myself with amazing, talented, honest friends who keep me positively energised rather than judge me or bring me down in my weak moments.
Fortunately, I also really enjoy spending quality time with my kids so it genuinely rejuvenates me and I hope they enjoy my company as much as I enjoy theirs. I love my children and do the best I can for them while keeping intact my own journey of learning, developing and contributing to society. Q What advice would you offer other working mums? A It’s not the quantity of time we must chase, it’s the quality of time we spend with our children that we must focus on. In order to achieve more in life, with or without children, one must be well organised and learn to prioritise. Working mums contribute to themselves and to society and show their children the journey of life by example. If achieved in a well-balanced manner, this is something to be truly proud of. he summer holidays are a great time to refresh and recharge. With a careful bit of planning it can also be a great time to develop key habits that will help your children thrive. Activities can include cycling, walking or learning a new board game – depending on the age of your child(ren) – but they can also include some powerful and simple ones that will stimulate yours and their brains, and help you all get in touch with your inner self. So here are my top 10 strategies to boost yours and your child’s physical and mental wellbeing this season…

listening and teach your child not to interrupt either. It is a very powerful experience when you actually feel listened to. Get into geocaching while you’re away. Everyone loves a scavenger hunt. Families and groups of people can search for hidden “caches” using the GPS on your phones. You can pick from easy to tricky and you can even choose how long you want to be on the hunt for. It’s like your very own treasure hunt and such a great way to get little ones walking much further than you would have imagined!
3
FIND FUN WAYS TO FEED YOUR CHILDREN HEALTHY FOOD
Practise self-care. Teaching our children the importance of self-care is vital for their development and a great building block for their adult lives, too. Allow your child to tell you when they need to rest or when they want to read (if they can), or even offer them a bath in the middle of the day if they feel they would like to relax. It’s vital that we’re connected to our gut feelings, which are usually overridden by our schedule and to-do list. So learn to give your body and mind what it needs as often as possible.
1
Get talking. A weekly family meeting brings many benefits. Set a time and arrange a place for your family to gather. No phones or other gadgets allowed. No TV either. You can either set a topic that you would like to discuss (like the next family holiday or which rewards chart you want to get started) or allow anything to come up. You could start by asking everyone to tell each other how their week has been so far. Practise
2
DANI AND DAUGHTER DOING OUTDOOR YOGA
Make “cool stuff”. The website dadcando.com is great and full of crafty ideas that bring adults and kids together, spending quality time with each other. From paper planes to dream catchers and other quirky things, it offers ideas for how to make stuff out of mostly inexpensive or recycled materials.
4
Bake. Whipping up treats in the kitchen can mean more than just creating yummy comfort food. In fact, by setting some time aside to spend together, baking can have a positive effect on yours and your child’s relationship, too. Smaller children can learn to measure out ingredients while older children can take charge of almost everything. By enjoying the end result (which is hopefully tasty!) it will leave you feeling super-satisfied, emotionally and physically. But watch the sugar; try to make healthy versions of your favourite treats and instill within your kids a health-conscious relationship to food.
5
Discuss goals. It can be lovely to talk with your child about their goals and dreams no matter their age. Allow your child to dream big! Then set a realistic goal that your child can achieve over the holidays. It can be as little or big as appropriate, from drawing a picture for each family member, to learning a new skill like roller blading. Setting a goal, working towards it and achieving it are empowering and positive experiences.
6
Borrow or purchase yoga cards. Yoga cards are a fun way for you and your child to embark on a journey that will be as exciting and varied as your child’s imagination. Each card shows a yoga pose and the colourful illustrations inspire hours of exploration, movement and creative
7
“TEACHING OUR CHILDREN THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE IS VITAL FOR THEIR DEVELOPMENT”
~
play. It allows your child to become your teacher, which is something they’ll love. You can never be too young or old to practise yoga. Try forest bathing. Most of us are aware that spending time in nature helps us to de-stress. A walk on the beach or a stroll in the countryside can make us feel so much better. The Japanese practise of “forest bathing” – basically just being in the presence of trees – is scientifically proven to improve your health. It became part of a national public health programme in Japan back in the early ’80s. So pick a green holiday destination this summer, surround yourself by trees and improve your immune functions!
8
Have a go at something new. Discuss with your child what it is that you could try out that’s new to you both. Pick something age- and budget-appropriate. This does not need to be a bungee-jump! You could order some clay and try your hand at making a vase. Try out a new healthy recipe, which you could let your child pick out of a magazine (or just turn to page 54). Or have a go at selling some old toys.
9
Go on an adventure. Turn a normal day into an exciting journey and see if you can take a train, bus and/or boat to get to your destination. We often go somewhere for a day out, may it be a zoo, a museum or a restaurant. But why not turn the “getting there” into an adventure in itself?

THE BALI VIBE Absolutely Mama learns more from the C’est Ici team about the beautiful interiors of this villa in Al Manara... W o r d s K AT Y G I L L E T T
M
onica and Tatiana are the ladies behind C’est Ici, an interior design and styling company based in Dubai. And they’re passionate about crafting your home without breaking your bank. Most recently, the dynamic duo made over a whole home in Al Manara in Jumeirah, Dubai using dream holiday destination Bali as their inspiration. “Our lovely expat clients from the Netherlands and Colombia, with two little girls aged two and four, recently moved homes to a lovely villa in Jumeirah,” Monica tells Absolutely Mama Emirates. “When I say ‘lovely’, I mean AMAZING. This spot is absolutely stunning… It was an amazing spot to style and decorate.” One of the most striking elements of the villa, Monica tells us, is the light, which streams in

through the entrance and gives the place a very “Bali vibe”. “The villa is absolutely spectacular,” Monica continues. “In particular the outdoor area, where we had a ‘bungalow feeling’ and there is plenty of greenery. It felt just like somewhere in Bali, not Dubai.” Her well-travelled clients also have a great collection of furniture and accessories, so Monica and Tatiana were able to mix and match their existing pieces with more adventurous items they spent a lot of time sourcing. “In this case, we were quite adventurous and created more than four feature walls, where the colour had a huge impact. Once we defined the colour palettes, we went bananas on the sourcing. “For this project, we mostly worked with the existing and imported a lot of items from Amsterdam. We also used local brands to give the final touches.” Across these pages, Monica tells us in detail what work they did to each of the four transformed rooms... cesticidecor.com

Our client wanted zero pink here. She has two lovely girls and they particularly emphasised the “NO PINK!” situation. Unsurprisingly, she is not the only client that has requested this from us. As a result, we focused our energy on creating a neutralgender look and feel while still incorporating girlie touches. If you follow us online, you will know by now that our starting point of the design phase is creating the right colour palette and inspirational mood board. While the process sounds quite straightforward, we took on different factors, including inspiration, vibe, colour palettes and furniture. This time, our colour palette was literally taken from an ice cream outing. Over the Christmas holidays, Matheo, one of my boys, ordered bubble gum (minty cream), Gaby, my youngest, ordered mango (mustard) and I ordered lemon sorbet (snow white). We were in the designing stage of the project, so I quickly ran all the ideas through the team and developed a more consolidated colour palette. Once we created the colour scheme, we then emphasised on the non-pink girlie touches. Products: Lamps from White Moss, custommade sofa, carpet from Crate & Barrel, cushions from H&M Home, accessories from IKEA, wallpaper from Paper Pop, armchairs for kids from Marina Home, cactus from Tribe Dubai, storage from NOOK, chairs from ebarza.com and accessories from H&M Home. 68

The entrance room was bare bones and the end result is a piece of art created with our styling and old treasures from the client. We added a few pieces to the styling of this room, but there were two defining factors. The first key piece is the Persian rug, which was inherited and is a unique piece. The second: the collection of art pieces, which were a dream to curate. Initially, the client wanted to transform this room from scratch and rebuild the whole area by purchasing most of the items, including the rug. As soon as we discovered the hidden gems, we put a stop to the client’s vision and advised her that we could do wonders with her existing stuff. We invested most of our design with the colour scheme of the Persian carpet, which is absolutely stunning. We decided to create a feature wall and curate the client’s art collection. We managed to fill the wall with memories and art. Products: Lamps from LED World, wood centretable from Pottery Barn, flower sticks from Marina Home, planters from Garden Center, Petroleum Blue paint from Jotun, all the rest are collectibles from the client.

ď Ź The idea was to create a brother and sister look from the living to the dining room. The villa is quite open and we didn’t want the two rooms to be too different. In this regard, the aim was to use the same colour palette with different statement pieces to create the right flow. The dining room is simple and minimalistic. The rug is a significant piece for the look as this gives warmth to the room. Again, we incorporated several African pieces from the client, which added character to the room. Lastly, the two oversized rattan shades from Tribe added a more relaxed approach, which was the main aim of the space. The mirror at the entrance of the villa maximised the space. Products: Rug from NOOK, rattan shades from Tribe Dubai, chairs from Dragon Mart, table is custom-made, mirror from Drift Factory.

ď Ź The living room was definitively inspired by Africa, with a nautical approach. Our clients are great collectors of antiques and animal features, which complemented our styling. Statement pieces such as the hanging planters and greenery lent our signature touch, and also added life to the space. Lastly, our feature wall and nautical linen blinds were key to wrap the whole look. new book published by Gestalten is full of ideas on how to create spaces that are attractive to adults and children alike. It’s time to ditch the stereotype of exhausted parents sacrificing personal style for the family – nowadays, your interior can be inviting, orderly, chic and – yes – serene, while still servicing all your little ones’ needs. For a glimpse of how, have a read of our exclusive extract from Little Big Rooms... “A Brio train runs through the living room, a bassinet stands in the parents’ bedroom, and a toddler makes noise on a miniature-format wooden stove in the kitchen. This is a scenario that all parents can identify with: children are suddenly everywhere – and if not the children themselves, then their colourful traces of odds and ends. Children like to make the entire home their territory, and not only when their own rooms are small. It is a positive thing when children develop an imagination and are permitted to implement their ideas at home, especially since it is seldom possible to simply send them out into the city alone. Children should, however, still learn that: there is adult territory that I may only use to a limited

extent – and only with permission – and there is my territory, where I can do as I please, as long as I tidy up again later. If corners for children are firmly installed in spaces for adults – for instance a play kitchen (there are beautiful models by Brio or Djeco) in the real kitchen, or a table for arts and crafts (for example by Richard Lampert) and/or a reading corner in the living room – such areas should always have enough boxes, drawers or baskets in which the little conquerors can quickly stow away their playthings after use. If parents encounter resistance in connection with tidying up, we recommend threatening children with the vacuum-cleaner scenario: if it comes out, everything will be gone afterward. People who like rugs can easily share them with their children in the living room, also because flooring made of natural materials is much more robust than one might think.” July / August 201 8

For Kids
The Hotel
As we said, this place was built for families. There’s even a children’s check-in area where the little ones can do what’s necessary when they arrive. You’ll also find dedicated children’s activities, and a pool and playground just for them, as well as plenty they’ll want to eat on the restaurants’ menus. High chairs and cribs are available. And make sure you enquire about the special family package that’s on offer throughout the year, too.
When it comes to UAE-based hotels, the Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort is fairly basic, but family-friendliness and affordability come first here. The rooms are comfortable and ocean-facing, and the atmosphere throughout the hotel – inside and out – is buzzing with families from across the world enjoying themselves.
The Food
There are six cheerful eateries at your disposal (including the lobby lounge). You’ve got the all-day dining spot, Al Shamal, where you’ll indulge in breakfast. Then there’s the basic but friendly beachfront spot, Le Chalet, which is right next to the swimming pool and a good lunchtime spot. At dinnertime, you can choose from Italian, Lebanese or Polynesian cuisines, as the hotel is also home to Al Jazeera, Scirocco and a Trader Vic’s, too.
The Activites
You won’t get bored here, that’s for sure. Firstly, there’s the beach, where you can soak up some sun and play games by the shore – or even try out some water sports. Then there’s the 18-hole championship golf course where you can spend a day on the greens. Outside the Al Hamra complex, you’ll also find nearby shopping malls and sporting clubs. You could book in a traditional dhow trip to take you to the Musandam Peninsula, or even take a desert or mountain safari. The opportunities are endless.
The Spa & Gym
The gym is particularly lovely, with all the latest gear and equipment to make sure you don’t miss a workout. The state-of-theart cardio machines also face large windows that look out over the kids’ pool and beach area. Meanwhile, the spa offers a range of affordable treatments, including facials, massages and body wraps using organic products, from 10am to 10pm every day.
Prices vary. If you are a Hilton Honors member, book by 2 September 2018, stay before 7 October 2018, and save up to 25% (terms and conditions apply). www3.hilton.com July / August 201 8

THE HOTEL PROVIDES PHENOMENAL FEASTS
I
lie back, cocooned in my bespoke Harrison AntiGravity Hammock that dangles from an outdoor pavilion during a session of aerial yoga at the Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, Hoi An. All I can hear is a cacophony of cicadas and the soothing voice of our instructor, telling us to breathe deeply in and out, allowing our stress to dissipate. After a few days at the resort I can’t say I have much tension left, but I play along, embracing the warm weather, the smells of freshly cut grass, and this rare moment to truly tap out and connect with myself. Dubai feels as though it’s a world away. From the moment you drive through this truly phenomenal hotel’s gates, a sense of drama and seclusion suck you in. While the all-villa resort is decidedly modern and luxurious, every turn reveals an element of deep-rooted Vietnamese tradition. The philosophies behind The Heart
of the Earth Spa, with its lotus pond and nightly floating-candle rituals, are inspired by renowned Vietnamese Zen master and peacemaker Th ich Nhat Hanh. Elsewhere, nestled amid the hotel’s abundant palm trees, you’ll fi nd the perfectly preserved Thanh Hoang Temple, where local fishermen once worshipped. Meanwhile, every one of the 100 gorgeous villas has been thoughtfully built with phong thuy (feng shui) principles in mind. The fantastic Four Seasons service, stunning setting and hotel’s busy schedule of complimentary activities makes it very easy to stay put for your entire stay. On one morning, we get up bright and early to join in on a bike ride, whizzing past nearby lush paddy fields, traditional temples and local residences. Later that evening, we gather with other hotel guests to witness the nightly candle-lighting ceremony that takes place around one of the property’s dramatic fountains, which stretches out towards the sea. Another night leads us to the spa, where the air is fi lled with the sounds of crystal singing bowls and we’re asked to leave our wishes in a floating candle, which we release onto the RELAX AT THE STUNNING lotus pond. Coconut HEART OF THE EARTH SPA cutting and conical hat making are other skills we could have learned on-site, had we more time. But you just cannot go to Hoi An, a former port city on Vietnam’s central coast, and miss the chance to explore the local area, too. Luckily, our class at the on-site cooking academy – in which we learn how to make four traditional dishes – gives us a chance to expand our horizons.

After a tour of the hotel’s own farm, we take a trip into the Ancient Town of Hoi An, where we wander through the food markets and are introduced to more local delicacies. We admire the architecture, which has clear French and Chinese influence, and soak in the hustle and bustle, and strong smells, of the traditional marketplace. On the go, we pick up a bánh mì (a must-try Vietnamese sandwich we’re still dreaming of), have a taste of durian (it’s not as bad as it smells), and sip on some tasty local iced coffee (AKA “rocket fuel”). The next day sees us take a one-hour bus journey to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of My Son, a cluster of Hindu temples that sprung up between the fourth and 13th centuries. Th is dramatic area is located within an elevated geological basin surrounded by a ring of mountains, and was the religious and political capital of the old Champa Kingdom. The experience is almost ethereal; recounted stories of past kings and queens dwelling in these tiny temples are brought to life as we make our way through the intricately carved ruins. On another day we take a leisurely boat ride over to Chàm Islands, where white sands, clear waters and souvenir shopping opportunities await. In the past couple of

decades this area has become a hotspot for tourists, but the charm of Chàm is not lost. Skilled local craftspeople can still be seen outside their homes creating traditional wares from surrounding natural materials, showing us a much simpler side to life than we’re used to in Dubai. The only downside we see is that a lack of education has led to local fishermen depleting the ocean’s stocks, and we only spot a handful of fish on one of our snorkelling trips in a nearby cove. In between every activity and excursion we take, we get the opportunity to taste an array of vibrant local dishes (and all dietary requirements are catered for, thanks to that

outstanding Four Seasons service). From the traditional bánh mì sandwich I mentioned earlier to the crispy rice flour pancakes (a clear holiday favourite) and fresh seafood galore, every dish we try is as memorable as the last. We eat in hole-in-the-wall-style eateries on the newer side of Hoi An, sample freshly prepared salads and seafood dishes at the beautiful restaurants in our hotel, and even enjoy a beachside feast after working up an appetite while snorkelling. Every meal is an occasion, an excuse to try something new and revel in the expertly balanced sweet, sour and spicy flavours. Back at the hotel, I indulge in the Nam Hai Earth Song, a 150-minute signature spa treatment that takes place in your own spacious, standalone room. I’m rubbed down with a handmade scrub made using herbs from the hotel’s farm and then allowed to soak in a petal- and lemongrass-strewn bath while I gaze out of the French windows onto that picture-perfect lotus pond, inches away. A 90-minute massage follows, and soothing, vibrational sounds of singing bowls then lull me into a dreamless sleep as any lingering remnants of tension simply melt away.

has been a softening over the last 12 months the overall property market has remained strong, and still provides numerous opportunities for investors. Possibly the most exciting news for investors is the UAE’s decision to allow for longer term residence visas (10 year-renewable ones) and 100% foreign ownership in companies. This is expected to have a significant impact on the property market, both residential and commercial, which was no doubt the intention. Expatriates in particular can consider buying a home rather than renting, as there is long-term clarity now. There will be other tangible impacts as well, both direct and indirect, such as population stabilisation and growth, renewed confidence in the property market and an increase in expat end-user purchasers, who are likely to invest in their own homes within the UAE instead of back in their home countries.

Sarajane AMBROSE
Sarajane founded the highly regarded international nanny agency, Imperial Nannies, and the exclusive maternity nurse agency, Maternally Yours, in 1996. imperialnannies.com Q What skills does a European nanny or governess have? A Middle Eastern families have a long-standing tradition of recruiting British and European nannies and governesses for good reason. Culturally, they are extremely discreet, well-mannered, organised, flexible, highly educated, and, most importantly, place etiquette high on their list of priorities. Our nannies and governesses understand that children need to be well-groomed, polite to adults, and engaged at all times, and have the assertiveness
to whisk away their charges during adult-only time. Moreover, our scrupulous screening process leaves no stone un-turned. We have set the bar for the industry and work ceaselessly to ensure that our systems are the most thorough in the industry. You may think that qualifications are key, and while they provide an excellent foundation of superior knowledge, it’s absolutely vital to fi nd someone with verifiable and relevant experience with children of the same age and stage of development as the children in your family. We only introduce candidates with at least five years’ relevant experience to match your child’s developmental stage. By selecting a British nanny with English mother tongue, you can be assured that your child will learn and speak perfect English. Th is is such an advantage for your child in today’s society. Our European nannies also offer other languages such as French, Spanish, German, Russian, Spanish or Arabic, which will enhance your children’s linguistic skills.
Prior to the announcement, the property investor visa was valid for two years, and could be renewed, issued by the Dubai Land Department for a freehold property valued at AED1 million or more on the title deed. In addition to this, there was also a six-month residency visa, a multiple-entry visa that is issued by the relevant immigration authority, that applied to property purchases across the UAE. So now that you can fi nally feel like a homeowner rather than a transient investor, it’s time to start thinking of mortgages. In all honesty, if there ever was a time to invest in the real estate market, it is now. Do your homework, research as much as possible and keep your options open. July / August 201 8

SAY MA’A SALAMA Summer is the time when many people leave the UAE for good, but how does the constant coming and going of friends affect our children? A clinical psychologist weighs in…
do as we do, not as we say, so what behaviours are you modelling when it comes to dealing with difficult emotions?
S
aying goodbye to loved ones is one of the most difficult things that life asks of us. For children, it is one of their top ten stressors – to say goodbye to a friend, or to a place. As parents, our instinct tells us to protect them from difficult feelings, but, if we look at childhood as a training ground for adulthood, one of the best things we can do for our children is to teach them how to say goodbye gracefully, by honouring their friendships and memories. We can do this by first managing our own anxiety as they sit with difficult feelings such as sadness and grief, before we remind them to remain hopeful that the friendship will continue. Here are a few things parents can do to make goodbyes more meaningful and less stressful for their children and their families…
THE CONSCIOUS PARENT
If you are trying to comfort your children and teach them to sit with difficult feelings, you first need to understand your own feelings about goodbyes and change. How do you manage goodbyes? How do you tolerate sadness or anxiety? Do you allow your children to see you cry? Is it okay to express difficult emotions within your family, or does someone quickly try to change the subject in order to distract you or convince you to feel something else? Children
BE OKAY WITH SADNESS
Do you think children should be allowed to feel sad, or angry? Most parents will want to protect their children from difficulties, but instead of “making them feel good”, change your parent mindset to “I want them to get good at feeling”. The only thing constant in life is change, so use these opportunities to teach your children about how to deal healthily with grief and goodbyes.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
Saying “goodbye” to friends and loved ones does not happen in a single moment. Change happens in a moment, but transitioning to a new way of being without a loved one takes more time. For children, the transition period may be longer. A goodbye can range in duration and finality from an over-the-summer vacation to changing to a new school, or a permanent goodbye due to a move out of the country.
LISTEN AND VALIDATE
Parents most often jump into problem-solving mode too quickly and do not give children a chance to voice all their concerns and worries about the goodbye. Ask children what they fear, what they worry about, what the hardest part about this goodbye is – and develop the narrative. Be okay with them crying, expressing anger, and being confused and critical – these are normal emotions as they experience grief. Validate their feelings and comfort them by sitting closely, hugging them, and listening to them with open ears and an open heart.
PROVIDE INFORMATION
Discuss what will remain the same and what will change. For example, you are no longer in the same school but you will be in the same football league; or you are no longer in the same country but you have summer holidays in the same city, etc. Acknowledge that while they may not be physically together, they can still nurture their relationship.
HONOUR THE PAST AND BE HOPEFUL OF THE FUTURE
Together, you can consider possible ways of saying goodbye and still staying in touch. Share your ideas and get your children to share theirs. Can they make a scrapbook of all their favourite memories? Would they like to start a blog where they both contribute? There are many ways to stay connected and close.
KEEP STRESSORS LOW
Depending on the type of goodbye and the level of stress associated with it, keep other stressors to a minimum. Do not try to introduce too many changes and goodbyes all at once.

ood news for preschoolers: conventional wisdom might tell us that “play” only happens at the end of the day or during weekends, but in early years education it is seen as a fundamental learning tool within the classroom. Play-based activities underpin the curricula at Aldar Academies Al Forsan Nursery, the leading education provider’s first nursery, which is scheduled to open in Abu Dhabi at the end of 2018. In the broadest sense, play creates an open, encouraging, and social learning environment, where children can explore, interact, and take risks to lead their own education forward. Today, the goal for early years educators is to create a supportive environment for this discovery to occur within – one that offers the freedom to play but still gives structure to learning, and allows progress to be measured. 92
|
THE ZONE OF PROXIMAL DEVELOPMENT (ZPD) arly theory from Lev Vygotsky, a pioneer of child development, explored how an effective environment of play not only allows children to reinforce what they already know, but encourages them to construct new knowledge. One of his most influential concepts in this regard is the ZPD. In short, Vygotsky defines ZPD as the gap between a child’s limit of cognitive development when left to solve problems independently and their level of potential development when collaborating with peers or under the guidance of adults. Play provides the ideal environment for ZPD to happen within, and today the kind of effective guided learning Vygotsky championed can be defined in three ways: Playing and exploring. Here, children paint a picture of the world around them by investigating and experiencing new things.

A HOLISTIC EDUCATION HIDDEN IN PLAY
WHETHER THROUGH SPORTS, CRAFTS OR TECHNOLOGY, STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO GET INVOLVED AND HAVE FUN DURING CLASSES
Creating and thinking critically. Students develop their own ideas, link multiple ideas together, and develop strategies for completing tasks. Active learning. Children focus on tasks that are specific, thematic, and fun, and are encouraged to keep trying when they encounter difficulties.
ALL-IMPORTANT ACTIVE LEARNING ctive learning is among the most important of all areas, as this is where the child is most engaged with the environment, resources, and their peers. Here, they are deep in learning, cleverly disguised as play. Ever-changing themes such as food or the animal kingdom dictate the content of play, while separate “areas of continuous provision” remain the same and give deliberate direction to the activities. Creating highly sophisticated, child-centric areas of continuous provision was a priority during the development of Aldar Academies Al Forsan Nursery as we sought to provide a leading early years education in a premium environment. Our nursery has a capacity of 200 students, with ten intelligently designed

areas of continuous provision, ranging from role-playing to water play and a technology zone. Each area is carefully planned to provide specific key learning opportunities relating to the child’s individual phase of development, but they won’t realise that. Instead, children are left to choose the area they want to interact with, and simply play and interact with their peers as teachers carefully observe their interests and behaviour. Based on these observations, teachers will then play alongside the children, while subtly questioning their actions and the environment around them to nurture their thinking and challenge their play.
hrough active learning and the natural breadth of activities involved in free play, children can’t help but grow in all of the most important areas. The physicality of playing and exploring develops students’ fine motor skills, while the peer collaboration involved with active learning nurtures social, language, and communication skills. Lessons in teamwork and respect are also learned as students play in groups and construct understanding from the interactions they have with children of different abilities and personalities. Meanwhile, those activities that encourage creation and critical thinking begin to develop a basic degree of emotional intelligence that is built upon as children progress through the higher grades. Do not let the laughter and mucky fingers fool you; in the world of early years education, play is a fundamental element of any child’s cognitive development.

THE WHOLE INGRAM CLAN IN THEIR BACK GARDEN
UAE & ME British expat Lizzie Ingram shares her thoughts on having a baby and living in the UAE…
LIZZIE I NG R AM Age: 37 Nationality: British Kids: 1, aged 7 months Lives: The Springs, Dubai
Q What is it about the UAE that you and your family love? A There’s so much to do for little ones and I can’t wait until Alex is a little older and the weather is cooler. We have already taken her to the Lost Chambers at Atlantis The Palm and she was mesmerised by the jellyfish display.

Q Where do you like to eat out as a family? A Alex is still a little too young to eat out, but together we really enjoy cafés like Le Pain Quotidien at the new Springs Souq and The Scene at Pier 7 in the Marina. They are always welcoming, especially when we need to navigate pushchairs! I find visiting Mall of the Emirates very accessible for babies when you need to change them – they have reliable facilities and space you need to either breastfeed or change babies on all floors. Q What do you all like to do on weekends? A Avoid going out! These are the days when we prefer to stay at home as the malls and cafés are much busier. Alex wakes quite early so I use this time to take her out in the garden while it’s cool. I tend to walk over to Carrefour at the new Springs Souq and find ingredients to make new dishes for my new blog. It’s also a time to call family back home.
AT THE LOST CHAMBERS, ATLANTIS THE PALM, DUBAI
Q Where do you take visitors when they come to see you in Dubai? A If the weather is cooler, we take them for walks round the lakes near us – first time visitors to Dubai are usually surprised at the amount of greenery we have to offer. The Beach area is always a big hit because of the gift shops, many restaurants and ice cream parlour, and, of course, the beach. Q What is your favourite kids shop? A Next has become a recent favourite for baby clothing. They have fashionable designs and soft materials that wash well, especially grows, and are available online, too. I go to Mothercare, but just for the essentials and only when the sale is on as I find it pricey. Alex is growing week by week so I try not to invest too much. Debenhams, however, has a beautiful range of Ted Baker clothes for babies and children. My husband has to drag me out of there, but I do have a Ted Baker blanket that will be cherished for her for the future. Q Did you give birth in the UAE? A Yes, I gave birth at the Saudi German Hospital. My overall experience with all the services and treatment has been fantastic. Alex spent time in the ICU for four days when she was born and they welcomed us anytime, day and night, to visit her. When I drive past now, I have such fond memories.
