e're finally moving outside this month. All our neglected gardens are coming into their own as the advent of summer gives us the courage to throw the doors open. And just as our living spaces are becoming greener and more plant-filled, our outdoor spaces are becoming more room-like. Outdoor rugs, careful lighting, clever weatherproof textiles and a huge variety of outdoor cooking equipment are all creating a new garden standard that seems to be in denial about the realities of our weather. Still, everyone loves an optimist and the British barbecue is more tolerant than its continental relatives. We don't really mind a bit of rain in our salad and especially when our gardens have been transformed into luxury living spaces. Summer living and dining is a theme in this issue, though we also look at indoor plants. We have found inspiration in sunny destinations including the Scilly Isles, where the Tresco Abbey Garden is home to an array of improbably exotic fauna – and we're sold on a coastal cottage near Camber Sands too, where whitewashed interiors and bleached shades have given us a taste of things to come. Here's hoping that the summer will be good to us. And that you enjoy this issue.

T The Fashion and Textile Museum’s Orla Kiely: A Life In Pattern is the first exhibition dedicated to the celebrated designer. Drawing on an archive of over 20 years of work, the exhibition ‘brings it all together under one roof in a celebration of design, print and colour that has become the Orla Kiely brand’. The exhibition will follow Orla’s work through the framework of her greatest tool – pattern. Orla’s patterns can work on any scale, allowing the exhibition to focus on distortions of size, creating an extraordinary Alice in Wonderland feel. Dresses, for example, will be reimagined to tremendous sizes and displayed alongside tiny dolls in replica outfits. With unique access to the brand’s archives, the exhibition offers a privileged insight into Kiely’s world. Her inspiration is made evident throughout the exhibition with each design drawing on the essential organic elements that are the foundations of her repeating patterns – the abstract natural world. Her paired down plant shapes and animal designs reveal a simplicity that captures only the essential aspects of the form.

Kiely’s fashion will be showcased on the mezzanine gallery, with over 30 full outfits displayed on mannequins and complemented by a whole wall dedicated to Orla’s iconic handbags. Orla presented her first ready-to-wear collection in 2003 using simple silhouettes that allowed her prints to stand out and have since been worn by household names such as Emma Thompson, Scarlett Johansson and the Duchess of Cambridge. With a global audience in thrall to the instantly recognisable and stylised graphic patterns of Kiely’s work, the exhibition has become a must-see for those willing to explore the power of decoration and the changing look of the 21st century environment.
Patterns of the 1950s and 1960s by designers such as Shirley Craven and Lucienne Day are another inspiration for Kiely’s work. With her use of natural motifs, colouration and big bold outlines, the designer’s work can also be seen within a historical trajectory of artists like William Morris, Voysey and Marimeko. As well as charting the growth and success of the Orla Kiely brand, the exhibition explores Orla’s childhood in Ireland and how this environment influenced her work. Her love of colour, from the greens and greys of vast skies to the browns and mustard yellow of the rolling hills and gorse, all pay homage to the colours of the Irish countryside. Rare family photographs and ephemera will be displayed alongside Orla’s earliest designs.

he World Illustration Awards Exhibition returns to Somerset House this month, displaying a shortlist of works drawn from a record 3,300 entries from 75 countries. The new Experimental category was particularly thought-provoking with judge Rob Alderson, Editor-in-Chief at Wetransfer, noting “this category was thrilling for the weird and wonderful breadth we saw. It’s exciting, and quite reassuring, to see how illustrators around the world are pushing the boundaries of what their work could and should be.” This year’s shortlist is notable for pushing the boundaries of illustration, including virtual reality, participatory elements, and influences of craft such as ceramics and papercuts. Ester Goh’s site-specific work for Singapore airport consists of nine coin-operated animated exhibit windows that draw parallels between the free-spirited nature of birds and travellers with a passion for exploration. A virtual-reality setup created by Malaysian artist Book of Lai is a 360 degree interactive illustration, allowing users to explore the virtual space with fun and curiosity, while Irma Gruenholz’s hand-painted ceramic sculptures convey their stories through unconventional media and only reveal this at a second glance.

Q: Why did you pick up the camera in the first place? A: Playing drums in jazz bands was and is my first love. I was successful in London clubs but I wanted to play in New York. Getting there was of course expensive, so I hit on an idea. If I could get a job as an air steward on the BA (BOAC) transatlantic flights, I could moonlight in clubs in London AND New York. But there were no jobs going for air stewards. I was told that I could take a job in the technical services division and wait my turn. I took the job. They gave me a camera and sent me to art school to learn how to use it. Q: Is there anyone you wished you’d photographed but haven’t? A: Very few. Marilyn Monroe died sadly a year or two before I made it. Who is there today to compare? I’d like to photograph Putin, he’s an intriguing character. I’d like to find who is behind the mask.

A: I work exclusively with Iconic Images, the owner of the biggest archive of Monroe, Bowie, Elton John, Audrey Hepburn, Jimi Hendrix, The Stones, Led Zeppelin and hundreds of others in music, jazz, film, stage and politics. It also has the biggest fashion archive in the world. Iconic makes sure a photographer’s legacy is insured and our photographs can still be enjoyed 200 years from now. Q: How do you get the perfect shot? A: Probably my greatest images were almost accidents, being in the right place at the right time and knowing when to be ready. Brigitte Bardot on a film set with occasional gusts of wind blowing the hair across her amazing face - I waited for that one gust. Frank Sinatra on the Miami boardwalk with his entourage. I was actually walking to his hotel wondering how I’d get past security to the Presidential Suite to hand him a letter. Then suddenly there’s Frank walking towards me; I started taking pictures. Q: What is your favourite cultural hot spot or art gallery in the borough? A: The V&A Museum tops every other venue in London - it is probably the best in the world. They’ve just opened their Photographer’s Gallery which is a great leap forward because photography is now a major player in the art market, when it was invisible only 10 years ago. Q: What is your future vision and how could you see Kensington & Chelsea improve? A: Kensington & Chelsea needs more cultural art spaces and galleries or its going to be overtaken by the East End/Hoxton/ Clerkenwell axis. It would be great to decorate a major outdoor area with street art. There’s just not enough to excite the eye outside of traffic signs and shop fronts. ome people might not want to holiday next to land that’s fenced off for use by the MOD. Or they might be put off by a location that’s just a few miles away from a nuclear power station. But when interior architect Marta Nowicka found a coastguard’s cottage for sale in Romney Marsh, a stone’s throw from the long stretch of beach at Camber Sands, she wasn’t put off by either of those things. She saw potential in the house, unloved as it was when she found it – and transformed it into a stylish coastal retreat whose interiors are characterful and cosy, fitting their seaside surroundings without becoming twee or clichéd.
Marta is an interior architect who’s built up a significant property portfolio over the past 20 years, each of them unique. She lives between a converted print factory in Shoreditch and a reinvented St John Ambulance station in Rye (both her own projects) and she is currently in the process of creating a family house out of a garage in Dalston. Her coastguard’s cottage definitely inhabits a strange spot. A few miles away there’s Rye, one of the region’s most conventionally pretty places, possibly a bit too pretty for some tastes. Camber is characterised by unlovely caravan parks and pylons, but at the empty stretch of flat land around Jurys Gap, the landscape is interrupted by two incongruous terraces of 19th century coastguards cottages set at right angles to each other. These are now mostly holiday lets, though there is a sense that you’ve stumbled upon a secret

community. It’s strange to think that there would once have been so many coastguards patrolling this stretch, but the wild and exposed headland was a smugglers’ paradise for several hundred years. It still feels otherworldly and with a large windfarm visible in the distance, we feel far away from everywhere. The house’s layout is unusual. Staircases are hidden behind doors and doors that you think might lead to rooms turn out in fact to be cupboards. There are windows on three sides, offering dramatic views of the skies, the expanse of surrounding land and of course the sea. Despite being very much a cottage, with Marta’s input it has become a five-bedroom house, with two basement rooms and a clever loft bedroom reached by a space-saving ladder-like staircase. “I like working with existing buildings and tickling something out of them,” she says. “I appreciate calm, neat, rational design.” In its white palette suiting the weatherbeaten coast, the interior has a textured feel, with many walls stripped back to the original plaster and its distressed patina and others painted white tongue and groove. There’s peeling paint on the stone staircase to the cellar and the dining table is a single piece of ancient wood, all ridges and knots and exposed brick surrounds the fireplaces. The house’s stripped back character respects its history.

It’s a great place to spend a weekend. The vastness of the beach isn’t visible until you’re on it, but a few steps away from the kitchen door is a dramatically huge stretch of neardeserted sand that disappears entirely at high tide. Further down the coast is the main stretch of Camber Sands with its dunes and crowds, while a short drive brings you to Dungeness, one of the strangest places in the UK. In the shadow of the power station is a huge stretch of shingle dotted with abandoned sheds and broken boats, and home to an assortment of wooden huts, mostly painted black, among them Derek Jarman’s famous Prospect Cottage. Full of strange fauna and bleakness, it’s a spot with a cult following of its own. You can almost smell the plutonium. Back at the coastguard’s cottage, there’s comfort and dinner in the garden and it feels a world away again.

W When architect Gregory Phillips and his family bought a semi-detached house in 2006 he had no idea that the house would become a laboratory for ideas that he would later use on some of the most glamorous houses in England. Eight years of work on his own house allowed him to ensure his ideas and products worked well and to make sure that he understood how houses have to accommodate the changing needs of a family. He says: “The result provides me with a place to take clients to show them what can be achieved from a traditional house.” He has also developed his own tastes and the upgrades to the house mirror the increasing demands that his clients have demonstrated over the same period. The house was,

at first glance, a very ordinary metropolitan style semi-detached 1930s house. It had been left in a poor state and had an extremely ugly rear extension that looked more like a portakabin than a house. Over eight years Gregory carried out several distinct projects as and when funds were available and when the family’s needs changed. In the first six months after the purchase, the wiring was replaced and plumbing upgraded. Walls and ceilings were plastered. Gregory says this phase was necessary just to make the house safe and liveable. While this was happening, planning consent was achieved for the future ground floor and roof extensions to the house. Gregory Phillips Architects has won national and international awards for both interior design and architecture, and he designs new houses and substantial extensions and refurbishments. His clients include many from ‘the rich list’; many are leaders in their fields in the worlds of finance, technology, property and sport as well as entrepreneurs. He also works on more modest projects that offer interest and excitement to the office.

After a gap of four years Gregory and his wife decided to create a luxury bedroom suite on their own floor, so a roof conversion that included a spectacular balcony with views of the garden was in order. The project included a bedroom with beautiful whitened ash flooring and straight grain stained grey oak cabinetry, all to Gregory’s specification. There is a dedicated dressing room area with shelves for Sara’s shoe collection – every woman’s dream. A marble ensuite bathroom with free-standing bath and a steam room shower (with built in sound system), all provide views of the trees. Ample storage is provided and there is even a mancave and loft spaces for extra storage. The bedroom is set up with a home cinema audio/visual system and lutron lighting with mood settings which, alongside the balcony, truly gives you everything a main bedroom needs. The new top floor illustrates Gregory’s growing love of exquisite finishes and craftsmanship, something he likes to provide for his clients. Following on from this, in the next stages of work, Gregory upgraded the front garden and continued with developing the rear garden - one of his passions and an ongoing project since 2007. The front garden involved upgrading the Yorkstone paving, installing a new resin bonded gravel drive and beautiful planting, including three dramatic Quercus Ilex trees

Gregory has formalised the garden into external rooms with emphasis on the room most visible from the house. Always keeping in mind the painterly view that there should be a near view, mid view and long perspective, Gregory says ‘if you have a lot of glass, you need a fantastic view”. Gregory’s work always incorporates internal spaces that enjoy the exterior spaces. Gregory has found that over the past few years, his clients’ expectations for their houses have risen. Everybody wants a high level of luxury: most of his clients have stayed in fantastic hotels around the world and hope to replicate those standards. However, they also want to create a home that is bespoke for them. Three rising stars from the art world – Michal Cole, George Morton Clark and Arthur Lanyon – created artworks that have been reworked in hand-knotted wool without losing their intricacy. These contemporary pieces are produced in Nepal and Jaipur using the best quality Tibetan highland wool, Bikaner wool, Chinese silk and nettle. imtim architects were approached to create a new side and rear ground floor extension to a mid-20th century semi-detached house in Lambeth. The extension had to resolve a number of existing issues at the property, including extremely unstable ground conditions, poor access to the garden and severe overlooking from adjoining neighbours as well as a newly-built block of apartments at the back of the garden. The garden is generous and beautiful and the most important part of the property for the client. The intention was to connect house and garden visually, materially and spatially with the new addition. One of the key moves was to introduce a change of level internally, which helped connect down to the garden level but also introduced an element of drama, allowing occupants to look over the whole garden as they entered the living space. The additions include a rear and a side extension and these are tied into the renovated existing garage to read as a single form externally that wraps around the original house. The external walls of the extension are finished in a pale pink, textured render relating to but also consciously different to the finish on the existing house. Inside the new living space – which spans existing and new structures – large glazed pivot doors frame the garden and allow the space to be opened to the outside in summer.

To one side, a large picture window onto the garden is framed by deep timber mullions that provide privacy and reduce overlooking from the neighbours, defining a more private and reflective area within the main space. A slot roof light over the kitchen and a glazed roof to the side extension flood the new space with natural light. ‘The existing situation at the rear of the house was pretty dreadful with terrible overlooking from a number of sides and chronic movement in the ground around the house and its existing conservatory. The addition had to solve all of these issues but we also wanted it to feel like a natural response to the house and its context - like it might always have been there’ Internally the materials are natural and earthy - again connecting to the garden; the walls use a finer textured version of the external render. The exposed timber structure of the roof draws the eye to the timber louvres and the garden beyond. The terracotta tiled floor allows a soft demarcation between inside and out. The angles of the steps, side roof and internal structures allow individual areas to assert their own identity and character while still operating together as a cohesive space. Crucially, wherever you stand within the space you are afforded generous views of the garden. Finnish plywood coated in a white translucent surface is used for the kitchen cabinetry. An Italian marble with veins of rust running through a grey/ white background was chosen for the kitchen worktops and island picking up the earthy tones of the walls and floors. nimtim.co.uk

The Legacy Reissuing the John and Sylvia S-Range for Stag Words E V E H E R B E R T

ne of the most enduring mid-century British designer furniture collections made a comeback at the recent Clerkenwell Design Week. The John and Sylvia S-Range, re-issued by Nathan Furniture, features 13 pieces from the original collection created for Stag in the 1960s – all of which remain sought after classics by fans of modernist design. John and Sylvia Reid both gained valuable experience working for influential British designer Robin Day and Hille in the early 1950s, fostered a 10-year partnership with Stag between 1952 and 1962. Their inaugural range, the C-Range, comprising a collection of modernist inspired bedroom furniture, achieved great commercial success as well as meeting with the approval of the design fraternity of the time. The S-Range, launched in 1960, was their first dining and living room collection,
The S-Range showed an intelligent approach to flexibility and attention to detail and was described as having “simplicity of statement, and an intelligent approach to flexibility and attention to detail.” The re-issue was brought about by Dominic Reid, son of John and Sylvia Reid, and Nicholas Radford, MD of Nathan Furniture and son of the original manufacturer. visit to Puglia in southern Italy was the starting point for our second collection with Habitat. The region is famed for its brightly glazed ceramics with vivid paint splatters and figurative motifs applied to handturned pottery, sculpted at the wheel. Habitat has worked with a small workshop in the town of Grottagli for a number of years owned by the Fasano family, who agreed to work with us on a collaborative collection of serveware for the dining table. Platters, serving bowls, crockery, jugs, utensil jars and pinch pots – the range is curated with a variety of shapes and sizes to add visual interest to your table and kitchen. Visually, the collection couldn’t be more different to our last – a reflection that not one of our supper clubs is ever the same as each other. Whereas our first textiles collection was based around botanical, muted design, this

reating a space that is as impressive as the food is a priority for Jackson & Levine, now known for their innovative floral installations and unique hand picked tableware. And since its inception, the Jackson & Levine supper club has popped up in some of the most exciting secret dining locations in London from a canal-side ceramics factory with accompanying barge, to a hidden gallery and even the heart of East London’s Victoria Park at night.
collection is unabashed about mixing colours – pinks with red, yellows with lilacs – with freehand artwork by Habitat’s in-house designer Martha Coates alongside beautiful splatter patterns. But like the last, this collection is again about celebrating traditional craftsmanship. Each piece is individually hand-made and glazed in traditional ways meaning you have your own unique piece. These are both stand alone statement pieces but also work together for an explosion of Italianate colour and design on the table. To accompany we’ve curated a Puglian inspired seasonal menu to enjoy with this collection. With the Francesca plate we’ve reimagined what the Fasano family is famed for: striking freehand figurative illustrations on ceramics. The result: an elegant Italian lady for the dinner plates and for the side plate a more classical, Romanesque design. The palette of green & pink and yellow and red adds a real point of difference and brings this tradition bang up to date. We played around with lots of faces and figures and we love the two characters that are the central motif of the collection. A ceramic utensil pot, for us, immediately conjures up the image of a traditional Italian kitchen, so we felt we had to have one in the collection. Again, to move away from the expected, we’ve used a bold, dipped colour in contrasting shades. The small oval platters too are beautiful for serving sides and complement both the salad and pinch pot designs.

lue, in all its various guises, has been making its mark on the kitchen - and Mark Taylor Design has been leading this trend. he headboard is generally the centrepiece of a bedroom, with everything else working around it. Getting the headboard right will completely transform your bedroom and should complement your existing or new décor as well as fitting in with your lifestyle habits. Headboards come in all shapes and sizes, from dramatic designs through to simple and understated. Nestled in the heart of rural South Wales, Laura Kelway-Bamber at The Headboard Workshop is full of advice for anyone planning to commissioning their own bespoke headboard. Laura’s family-run company have made bespoke upholstered headboards for over 30 years. They offer everything from traditional deep buttoned headboards and clever storage beds to huge boutique hotel style padded feature walls – and nothing is too much trouble. “With endless possibilities available, knowing the basics is where you should start,” says Laura. “For instance, ask yourself if you’re
after comfort or design first as this will often dictate the style of headboard and therefore the materials available,” she adds. The right headboard can instantly breathe new life into your bedroom. However, it’s vital that it meets your individual needs. With this in mind, you should avoid buying an oversized headboard that imposes on the look and feel of the space you are working with, especially if the room is not big enough.
Height and width are the two most common things that Laura’s company have to negotiate, so she’s devised a technique for finding the right height for you. Simply use a piece of string between two blobs of sticky tac to mark a temporary height line on the wall at the head end your bed, then move the string up and down to see exactly the effect your new headboard’s height will have on your room – go high for impact or to show off a beautiful fabric. Measure from the top of your mattress up to the line of string and you’ll have your ideal height. Headboards can be made to fit to the bed, your wall or indeed be made floor-standing. You’ll need to decide how you’d like your headboard to function – Does it need to be double sided for the centre of a room? Do you have any features that will need to be accounted for like light sconces or an angled ceiling if you’re in an attic bedroom? An amazing and very elegant and sophisticated basement extension with really high ceilings had been added to the property, in addition to a double storey rear extensions and a dormer alteration. The developer’s interior designers had already furnished the house and prepped it for the sale. However, the style did not reflect the required luxury for an elegant home of this size and type. More importantly, it didn’t reflect the client’s life style and preferences.
• The property layout was working
perfectly. No interior architectural design was required. The main focus during this part of the design process was to create a nice flow within the house, and internally within each of the rooms. Different functions were allocated to the rooms: for instance, a large room in the basement was very clearly marked out as the cinema room from the outset. Other rooms within the home required a little bit more time.

A
rtists have always been drawn to the Scilly Isles, the archipelago that lies 28 miles from the Cornish coast. The light, the improbably beautiful beaches with their Caribbean-white sand and Disney-like aquamarine water, the exotic fauna, the microclimate and the generally otherworldly feel to the region all make it special. Because you’ve really got to want to come here. It might be in England but time-wise it’s definitely Long Haul – the journey time from London is similar to the Caribbean’s. It’s an endless drive from London to Land’s End, especially accompanied by rain that ranges from pouring to torrential with grey skies, terrible visibility and pockets of flooding. But there’s a glimmer of blue sky in the distance as soon as we arrive at Land’s End airport, and from here the travelling gets more interesting. A 16-seater Skybus – too small even for hand luggage – takes about 15 minutes to reach St Mary’s, the only island with an airport (from the passenger windows it seems that the landing strip is obscured by

Everything seems miniature and oldfashioned apart from the fauna, which is bizarre rocks, which makes for an exciting descent) and from here it’s a car to the port, followed by a boat to Tresco, the privately-owned island where we are headed. With a population of just 170, Tresco is a privately owned island run mainly as a timeshare business. Leased from the Duchy of Cornwall it the early 19th century, it is still run by the same family. There are no cars; everything seems miniature and old-fashioned apart from the fauna which is bizarre and exotic, all sprawling succulents and tropical palms. Think Postman Pat on the Galapagos. On Tresco, there’s a single pub, a church, a primary school, a shop, a spa, two restaurants and an art gallery, plus a ruined castle and the Abbey and that’s really it. At less than two miles long and with no street lighting, this is a calm and quiet place where you’re never far from an improbably beautiful beach and an impressive view. Our cottage, one of the Flying Boat terraces, is named Fearless and from its sitting room it has an impressive view of the beach and the sea; at low tide a sandbank appears and creates a walkable route to Bryher, the next island, which is even smaller and has a population of only about 80 people (though it

does have a fantastic hotel, Hell Bay). The main highlight of Tresco is the Abbey Garden, often described as a perennial Kew without the glasshouse. Dating back to the 19th century, this subtropical garden is home to more than 20,000 species of plants from at least 80 countries and even in the depths of winter there are exotic plants in flower. Many of them that wouldn’t survive on the mainland just 30 miles away are able to thrive here thanks to the sheltered location and peculiar microclimate. These gardens were established by the 19th century proprietor of the islands, Augustus Smith, originally as a private garden within the grounds of the home that he designed and built on a site hosting the remains of a Benedictine Abbey. There were hardly any trees on the island and the gorse did not provide enough protection so Augustus planted ‘shelterbelts’. The first were mainly deciduous trees such as, elm, sycamore, oak, and poplar, and later he
planted Monterey cypress and Monterey pine which are fast growing and suited to coastal conditions. By building tall wind-breaks, Smith channelled the weather up and over the network of walled enclosures. He also carved three terraces from the rocky, south facing slope looking towards St Mary’s. The hotter, drier terraces at the top of the garden suit South African and Australian plants; those lower down provide the humidity that favours flora from New Zealand and South America. Not only is the island home to a diversity of fauna but its wildlife is also remarkable. This is one of the few places where the red squirrel still thrives, not having been bullied into extinction by its fiercer grey cousin. There are no badgers, foxes or hedgehogs on Tresco and therefore the gentle red squirrel has no predators. Sure, an island of this diminutive size lacks facilities. There is one shop and a bike hire place, a post office (a very efficient one – our

APART HOME visits ‘Bloomsbury on Sea’ to admire Virginia Woolf’s former home – now the National Trust’s Monk’s House Words N A N CY A L S O P

ne blustery June day in 1919, Virginia Woolf hopped on her bicycle at Lewes, the pretty East Sussex market town where she and her husband Leonard had hastily bought a house in the stump of an old windmill not three weeks earlier, and cycled four miles southward to the village of Rodmell. Despite having just moved into Round House, the “butt end of an old windmill, so that all the rooms are either completely round or semi circular”, she found that her eye had already roved. The object of her desire? “An unpretending house, long and low, a house of many doors.” The curved, narrow lane that weaves through Rodmell, flanked by low flint walls and quintessentially English cottage gardens, represented a sort of Platonic ideal of the Sussex hamlet. The house – two-storey, weatherboarded and low-slung – stood in the shadow of the village church and was charming if basic; but it was the garden that swung it, with its three-quarters of an acre and adjoining wild orchard with an “infinity of fruit-bearing trees . . . the well kept rows of peas, artichokes, potatoes; raspberry bushes (with) pale little pyramids of fruit.” Walking up the steps from the back of the house, past the lean-to greenhouse at its rear (added by Leonard in the 1950s), full of tiered potted plants, and winding up the garden path fringed by tulips in a kaleidoscope of colours

past the orchard on the left, today as then you see the piece de resistance: the view of the rolling green South Downs, and the river Ouse snaking along at its foot. Virginia Woolf was sold, as was the house, at auction, after which she wrote to a friend: “That will be our address for ever and ever.” Indeed, it was. Today Monk’s House is the property of the National Trust, which has impeccably kept it up so that one might imagine that Virginia might just have popped out to the orchard, or sequestered herself away in the writing lodge at the bottom of the garden to which she commuted from the house with “the regularity of a stockbroker”, and from where she penned most of her major works. Sussex was, then, to her mind a far greater muse than Bloomsbury, with which she is so famously associated.
Today hand-painted bowls await fruit, walking sticks await their owners and penny stamps await missives – but more than any of those, the gardens await their original nurturer. For while Virginia Woolf’s name is linked with the mental health battles that eventually led her to drown herself in the nearby Ouse at the age of 59, for the most part, Monk’s House – and Sussex – was a creative catalyst and a rest cure all in one. Here that purportedly troubled mind played bowls with the Bloomsbury set (Maynard Keynes, Lytton Strachey, TS Eliot, Yeats et al), baked bread and made jam. Here, just a few miles from Charleston, her sister Vanessa’s famously beautiful and louche home, she was for the most part, happy. It was, as the group dubbed it, “Bloomsburyon-Sea”.

found both here and at Charleston – Virginia had little confidence in her own decorating abilities. Thus it was that she conscripted those of her sister Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant who obliged with unstinting flamboyance. Many of the paintings on the walls are attributed to Grant, while the duo took what is clear delight in splashing everything – from the lampshades to the upholstery – with exuberant colour. Much of the furniture hails from the Omega Workshop, which was winding up the year that the Woolfs moved in to Monk’s House; the movement was spearheaded by the artist and writer Roger Fry – a regular guest at Rodmell – with its aim to blur the boundaries between decorative and fine art. In being a repository for its output, Monk’s House’s décor is still more historically significant. Meanwhile, Virginia’s bedroom which, in order to reach one must step outside the from the kitchen and up a few stairs, is

Of Monk’s House, he wrote, “our daily life probably nearer that of Chaucer’s than of modern man.’’ Indeed, in 1919 the house had no gas, electricity, or water, although the couple did add some modern comforts during their time there. Although it doesn’t stretch quite as far back as Chaucer’s time, Monk’s House – and its original nine oak-beamed rooms – dates to the 16thcentury. The Woolfs added an extension and converted the rooms to make six larger ones, rather than the original nine small ones. The most seductive of them all is the largest: the sitting room, painted in a fresh green that was one of Virginia’s favourite colours, and softly lit by parchment shaded lamps. The hordes of cooing visitors today might be surprised to learn that, despite the exquisite beauty of the place and the sensation that large numbers of interior designers working today are simply aiming to ape (minus the innovation and flair) the look that the Bloomsbury Set invented – the apotheosis of which is

Virginia had little confidence in her own decorating abilities bright and fresh thanks to a large window by her bed, but cosy too, courtesy of the hearth, which is decorated with tiles by her sister. While the beautiful house and garden, the harmonious relationship with her husband Leonard, the proximity to her sister at Charleston and the stead stream of chattering guests from London kept her love affair with this modest yet endlessly enchanting house fresh, it was surely the mighty South Downs that made it an imperative for Virginia. “Too much for one pair of eyes,’’ Virginia Woolf wrote in 1937, “enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’’ Today, from April until October each year, curious visitors come and walk in her footsteps, looking where she looked and, with luck, feeling the happiness that she felt here too. nationaltrust.org.uk/monks-house ALL PHOTOGRAPHS ©NATIONAL TRUST IMAGES/ANDREAS VON EINSIEDEL
