From Where I Sit

Like many women, I have multiple roles. I am a wife, stepmom, daughter, sister, friend, dog-mom, physician, member of Zeta Tau Alpha and ZTA National Officer since 2008. People frequently ask me why I continue to volunteer for ZTA. That answer is easy; I love it. ZTA has helped me find my people and develop leadership skills. I want to give back to the organization, so it will be here for future generations. Lately, more people have asked me how I manage to do everything. That answer is more complicated.

I am fortunate to have a husband and family who fully support everything I do. Before taking on a challenge, like pursuing a master’s degree in health administration, a new responsibility at work or a new role in ZTA, I ask my family. My priorities change daily, but family always comes first. I try not to multitask, and most importantly, I make time for myself daily. That could mean taking an hour to go to the gym, take a nap or watch TV.

I set limits. Saturday nights are my family/date night, and unless there is an emergency, I won’t participate in a meeting or call. I have at least one vacation each year without ZTA or work responsibilities. When I travel for ZTA, I try to include my family. My husband often comes with me to Zeta Day and we make a weekend of it.

I have learned to say “no.” I won’t agree to do something unless I can give it my best effort. I surround myself with people who give me reality checks when they see me taking on more than I should. They remind me if I start to neglect responsibilities, giving me time to refocus.

When work or family commitments keep me from attending a ZTA event, I know the other Collegiate National Officers will cover for me, as I would for them. The Vice Presidents Collegiate have always been understanding when I cannot travel and have found other volunteers to stand in for me.

I have learned to understand others more, not compare myself to anyone else and set achievable goals. I cannot fix every problem, but I consider it a success if I give it my best effort and improve at least one aspect. The small accomplishments add up, and that has made the difference.

I often wish I had more hours in the day or that I could clone myself. Until those things are possible, I will continue to put my heart and soul into doing what I can for ZTA, when I can, as long as I can.

My Convention Experience

The focus of Convention 2022 was love, and that is precisely what I experienced. Four days with more than 1,000 sisters gathered in the heat of Texas to strengthen the fellowship and camaraderie of the Fraternity. From dining together, to celebrating during award ceremonies to bonding during the “Zonky Tonk” sisterhood event, Convention left us all changed for the better. It was an opportunity to understand more about ZTA nationally while also connecting with collegians and alumnae who share the love of the Fraternity. Seeing sisters receive recognition for their achievements and celebrating alongside them was terrific. Speakers Nataly Kogan, Alex Hudgens, Bonny Shade and Laura Rutledge were incredible examples of driven leaders who empower women within ZTA and worldwide.

I was proud to not only represent Iota Phi Chapter but also to share something bigger than myself. My time at Convention was incomparable to anything I have experienced, and I will never forget it. I left feeling empowered, inspired and challenged to lead with a loving heart and show other Zetas the vast scope of our sisterhood.

Proclamation

Just three months ago over 1,000 Zeta Tau Alphas gathered in Dallas for our first in-person Convention since 2018. The heartfelt emotion and the great joy of being back with our sisters again was awesome. The five days we spent together were filled with much-needed hugs, smiles and laughter.

In 1898, Founder Maud Jones Horner experienced that same joy. In The History of Zeta Tau Alpha , she recalls: “The beginning of the session 1898-99 found our little crowd back again at the Normal and just as eager as before, if not more so, to find something to satisfy our desire.”

Maud knew just how much her sisters needed each other. In the preamble to the first Constitution of Zeta Tau Alpha , she proclaimed, “we have banded ourselves together... to be to each other what we most need in times of sorrow as well as joy throughout our lives.”

For 124 years, ZTA has taught us to be sisters who share in each other’s joy and sorrow. Sisters who band together eagerly. The charter of Zeta Tau Alpha refers to this as the need to intensify friendship.

Founders’ Day is a great time to consider how to intensify our friendships, especially now that we can be together face to face. As National President, I plan to visit our chapters in person. Building relationships comes more naturally in person. We can attend alumnae chapter gatherings to grow established friendships and make new ones. We can volunteer as advisors and meet regularly with collegiate officers to help them strengthen their chapters. We can volunteer at Think Pink® events and raise awareness of early detection of breast cancer.

Most importantly, we can be to each other what we most need in time of sorrow as well as joy, just as our Founders

envisioned. We can give to the ZTA Foundation on the third annual Day of Giving to provide essential scholarships and programming for our members. We can pick up the phone and call a sister who might need to hear a familiar voice.

As we approach the milestone of the 125th anniversary of our Fraternity, let’s all pledge to intensify the friendships we have made and continue to cherish in Zeta Tau Alpha.

Given under my hand and seal, I proclaim the fifteenth day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-two, as our 124th Founders’ Day.

Wednesday

Large lighted letters spelling out “Howdy Y’all” and topped with a spray of turquoise and gray balloons greeted collegians and alumnae as they arrived at Convention 2022. Seeing and hugging sisters for the first time in four years created a special excitement that lasted throughout the week.

National President Alicia Patten Williams welcomed the 1,000 attendees in the opening session and introduced National Council, the boards of the ZTA Foundation and the ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation and the 2022-2023 Leadership Consultants.

Keynote speaker Bonny Boutet Shade (Kappa Tau Chapter, Florida Gulf Coast University), set the tone for the week’s focus on love. “Love is a journey, not a destination,” said Bonny, associate director for fraternity and sorority life at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. “Love is a verb. It’s a choice you make with grace, and it requires action.” She encouraged her sisters

to love by doing the work that maintains ZTA’s common thread.

At dinner, Mrs. Williams and the eight other members of National Council presented the State of the Fraternity address. They spoke of how the lessons of The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha guided their decisions during the challenging 20202022 biennium.

“We created a symphony of high ideals by holding true to the Creed’s last instruction, ‘remembering always that the foundation precept of Zeta Tau Alpha was Love, the greatest of all things’,” Mrs. Williams said. “We have enriched and ennobled our lives under the most difficult circumstances by learning to love sisters steadfastly, enduringly and unconditionally.”

The first Business Meeting featured treasured Convention traditions— the processional of delegates and National Officers, the parade of chapter flags, the Welcome given by the President of the nearest collegiate chapter, the Response from the President of the newest chapter, and the presentation of new chapter silver cups.

After the Business Meeting, the Fraternity Housing Corporation held its biennial meeting and elected officers (see page 16). The FHC also hosted Thursday’s luncheon, celebrating housing volunteers and announcing the creation of the Julia Marthaler Hill Excellence in Housing Leadership Award.

The award was named in honor of and presented to Mrs. Hill for her 20 years of service to the FHC (see page 34).

Nora Nell Hardy Jackson, former National President and former FHC President, received the Repeater Award for attending 27 Conventions.

The afternoon guest speaker, Nataly Kogan, urged ZTA members to embrace themselves as “awesome humans.” She offered strategies for reducing stress, including disconnecting for 30 minutes every day to refuel, and finding balance between emotional, mental and physical energy.

Thursday’s dinner paid tribute to collegiate Crown Chapter recipients, Outstanding Advisors, the collegiate Louise Kettler Helper award recipient Danielle Harrison (Alpha Theta Chapter, Purdue University), and the recipients of the Vivian Ulmer Smith Recruitment Award, presented for the first time to multiple members—the Virtual Recruitment Task Force.

Following dinner, attendees changed into ritual attire for the Rededication Service, conducted by the Leadership Consultants, and the Memorial Service, honoring members who passed away during the biennium. During the service, ZTA remembered 32 former National Officers who died from 2018 to 2022.

Friday

At the second Business Meeting, delegates approved changes to the Constitution & Bylaws of Zeta Tau Alpha, including eliminating the requirement of alumnae references for potential new members. The meeting also included a review of ZTA’s harm reduction policies.

Guest speaker Alex Hudgens (Lambda Iota Chapter, Vanderbilt University), called ZTA “love in motion” and asked how each attendee would stay in motion after Convention. The a Emmy-nominated journalist and producer, formerly with Access Hollywood, offered the acronym HEART as a guideline for motion: hope, energy, accountability, relationships and tenacity.

With everyone dressed in pink, Friday’s luncheon celebrated the ZTA Foundation’s commitment to scholarships and philanthropy. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of breast cancer education and awareness as ZTA’s philanthropy, the Foundation announced a $500,000 grant to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (see page 46).

The Foundation also honored the retirements of Vice President of Philanthropy Sherry Server Tilley and Vice President of Scholarship Catherine G. Slaughter with endowed scholarships in their names.

The afternoon collegiate small group sessions continued the week’s focus on the newly defined Key Value of Love. Collegians learned more about how to practice self-care and how to love their sisters more authentically through moments big and small.

Friday’s dinner was a rousing tribute to the recipients of the Honor Ring, Alumnae Crown Chapter Award and the alumnae Louise Kettler Helper award recipient Diane Hansen Keegan.

Sisters then donned their hats and boots for the “Zonky Tonk” sisterhood party, featuring line dancing, games and multiple backdrops for that perfect Instagram photo.

Saturday

At the final Business Meeting, the retiring members of National Council—National President Alicia Patten Williams, Vice President Collegiate II Laura Moak Redman and Extension Director Raechel Bennett Biggs—received silver trays and boxes filled with personal notes from ZTA sisters in honor of their service.

The proposed slate of National Council members for 2022-2024 passed by acclamation and the former National Presidents conducted the National Council Installation Service. Former National President Nora Nell Hardy Jackson presented The Purple of the Fraternity to her daughter, new National President Dinah Jackson Laughery.

Saturday’s luncheon featured the ZTA Foundation’s 2022 Outstanding Alumnae, ESPN and SEC Network host Laura McKeeman Rutledge (Gamma Iota Chapter, University of Florida). Laura recalled how her ZTA

sisters believed in her more than she believed in herself and encouraged her to serve as a chapter officer, campus tour guide, sports radio reporter and pageant contestant.

“Looking around this room right now, I think about the power we have as women. Everyone here is a leader, a difference maker, an influencer,” she said.

During their free afternoon, Zetas were able to relax around the pool, enjoy the Gaylord’s amenities or just rest up for the final celebration.

At the Recognition Banquet, 22 alumnae chapters and 28 collegiate chapters received the coveted silver trays, representing excellence over the last biennium. Convention concluded with a sisterhood circle, with Zetas linking arms from table to table to sing “Today and Forever.”

Get to Know the Three Boards

National President

Beta Gamma Chapter (Florida State University)

What is something about you that most people don’t know?

I love a big hug! People assume I am not a hugger, but a hug from a friend is the best gift I can receive. I look forward to making new friends as I visit our chapters and give out hugs.

JESS ADAMS MEYERS

Vice President Collegiate I Eta Beta Chapter (Duquesne University)

Which Founder would you most like to meet and why?

I would love to meet Alice Bland Coleman. Like Alice, my friendliness and “sparkling personality” were misunderstood, and in high school I was voted “class flirt.”

STANCY ROBINSON HAGANS

Vice President Collegiate II Gamma Tau Chapter (Texas Tech University)

What is something about you that most people don’t know?

I almost played college softball! At the last minute I decided I wasn’t passionate enough to be a dedicated student athlete, so I tried something new and went through recruitment. I am glad I did!

KIMBERLY JONES IVESTER

Vice President Collegiate III Gamma Pi Chapter (The University of Georgia)

What is your favorite aspect about volunteering for ZTA?

First, working with collegians fills my bucket. They bring such great ideas, passion and love. Second is the

sisterhood I have found meeting Zetas beyond where I live who support and encourage me.

KARLA LUNDGREN WHEELER

Extension Director

Psi Chapter (University of Washington)

What is something most people don’t know about you?

Just as I was graduating college, I turned down a job offer to be an onair radio personality for KISS 106.1 FM in Seattle, Washington. I traveled as a ZTA Leadership Consultant instead!

KERY REINKEMYER WEBB

Vice President Alumnae I

Eta Iota Chapter (Valdosta State University)

Which ZTA volunteer job has been your favorite?

Each has brought joy in a different way and my favorite so far has been District President. To be a good volunteer, you don’t need to know all the answers; you just need to be teachable and have the best interest of ZTA at heart.

CHERI WHITE

ARMSTRONG

Vice President Alumnae II

Theta Gamma Chapter (Texas A&M University)

Why do you want to serve on a national board?

ZTA has made such a difference in my life through life-long friendships, a Foundation scholarship and opportunities to learn and develop leadership skills.

I want to ensure these opportunities are available for years to come.

DR. KATIE PEOPLES ZAMULINSKY

National Panhellenic Conference Delegate Theta Xi Chapter (Rutgers University)

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I’m an introvert! In my ZTA and professional roles, I speak to large groups, lead meetings and serve as an ambassador. At the end of the day, I need a good hour of quiet.

SHANNON FERGUSON

Secretary-Treasurer Alpha Psi Chapter (University of Missouri)

Why did you join ZTA?

I went to a large university and wanted to find a place on campus

I could call home from day one. ZTA provided that place as well as leadership lessons that have helped me grow personally and professionally ever since.

CARLA MARTIN COBB

Vice President of Collegiate Development Theta Tau Chapter (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

What do you wish you could tell your collegiate self?

Don’t take for granted the little moments like eating in the ZTA dining room on a random Tuesday. Take advantage of campus opportunities—speakers, plays, shows and resources. And study harder.

MARLENE DUNBAR CONRAD

Vice President of Philanthropy Eta Iota Chapter (Valdosta State University)

What is your favorite line from The Creed?

To look for the good in everyone. I try to live that every day. My daily goal is to give lots of grace to others. You never know what people are going through and a little grace goes a long way.

KRISTEN HUMESTON

Silver Awards

On the final night of Convention, ZTA celebrates the achievements of collegiate and alumnae chapters at the Recognition Banquet, often referred to as “Silver Night,” because each award is a silver tray or bowl. National Council selected 28 collegiate and 22 alumnae chapters for silver awards this year. The Fraternity’s five most prestigious awards honor sustained excellence and representation of our Nine Key Values by three collegiate chapters on their campuses and two alumnae chapters in their communities.

HELEN MARGARET HARRISON AWARD

The Helen Margaret Harrison Award is the highest recognition a collegiate chapter can achieve and recognizes a chapter’s success in consistently attaining a high level of excellence in every phase of chapter operations. Epsilon Chapter (University of Arkansas), a chapter of 500 women, planned all the required programs, including 230 service projects, philanthropy events, sisterhoods and socials with dedication and love. While the chapter has a robust calendar that meets all required programs and then some, academics come first and the chapter obtained a GPA over 3.5 for the biennium.

NELLY GALLOWAY SHEARER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Nelly Galloway Shearer Achievement Award is the second highest collegiate honor and is given to the chapter that has made the greatest progress or continued to maintain its high degree of excellence during the biennium. Gamma Pi Chapter (The University of Georgia) is a seven-time Helen Margaret Harrison award winner and has received one of the top seven awards every biennium since 1994. The chapter prioritizes campus leadership, membership retention and academics. The chapter achieved a grade point average of more then 3.6 this biennium and initiated nearly 100% of its new members.

18 Themis Fall 2022 | Convention 2022

MERIT AWARD

The Merit Award is the third highest award presented to a collegiate chapter. It is given to the chapter that has maintained and sustained excellent officer and campus leadership, academic achievement, attitude and cooperation. Gamma Psi Chapter (Texas Christian University) has 278 members and maintained a GPA of over 3.4 consistently for seven years, including 48 members with a perfect 4.0 GPA this year. Every member is involved in outside organizations with over 30% of the chapter holding leadership roles.

BETTY MCGEHEE SCHUESSLER AWARD

The Betty McGehee Schuessler Award was established to honor the Vice President Alumnae from 1964–1970. Mrs. Schuessler placed great emphasis on the importance of alumnae supporting collegiate chapters. The Memphis, TN Alumnae Chapter received this award for the third consecutive biennium. Members provide an outstanding advisory board to a nearby chapter and cultivate personal relationships with collegians. The chapter consistently recruits new members and plans excellent programming around a yearly theme. Members will drive 45 minutes or log in remotely from across the country for events.

NAN BARKLEY BOETTCHER AWARD

The Nan Barkley Boettcher Award is the other of the two highest alumnae chapter awards. Named for the former National President and Vice President Alumnae, it is presented to the alumnae chapter with no collegiate chapter in the community that has achieved excellence in all areas of Fraternity life throughout the biennium. Through thoughtful programming and calendar management, the Collin County, TX Alumnae Chapter excels in membership growth, creative events and inclusive activities. The chapter held over 150 events this biennium with a combined attendance of 1,500. Members also supported a collegiate chapter 40 miles away with recruitment practice, snacks, meals, resume workshops and game nights.

A LOVE STORY: REDEFINING ZTA’S DEFINITION OF LOVE

Zeta Love. ZL. ZLAM. The greatest of all things. These all likely come to mind when Zetas read, see or hear the word love. Zeta Love is a special feeling. It’s one of the reasons collegians and alumnae remain ever loyal to ZTA.

The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha refers to Love as “the greatest of all things.” In 2016, ZTA defined and developed its Nine Key Values, including Love. Since then, ZTA has assessed its membership’s connection to Love. The results are an evolving love story–not the kind in a novel or on the big screen but a story about how ZTA has redefined its definition of Love.

ASSESSING LOVE

Since 2016, through a partnership with Dyad Strategies, ZTA has collected data from the annual collegiate Membership Survey. While completing the survey, collegians

respond to behavioral questions on a scale of 1 to 5 (Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree). Some of these behavioral questions correlate directly with each of the Nine Key Values. That data has helped tell the stories of ZTA chapters through these Values.

National Council and International Office staff analyze the data each year to identify trends or areas of improvement. Over time, they have noted stagnant results in members’ sense of Love. That is where and why this Love story changes course.

EXAMINING LOVE

Although any score above 4.0 in the Nine Key Values is considered great, the Love results became an outlier when compared to steady improvements in all the other Key Values.

“It was clear from the assessment data that there was a disconnect between how the assessment defined love and how our women experienced love in their daily life,” said Dr. Katie Zamulinsky, ZTA National Panhellenic Conference Delegate. Because the questions on the survey directly correlate with each Key Value’s definition, this stagnation begged the questions: Does ZTA’s definition of Love align with current collegiate members’ experiences? Did ZTA need to redefine Love? The best way to find out was to ask collegians directly.

REDEFINING LOVE

Working with Dyad, ZTA developed a four-step plan: a focus group with collegiate members, creating new Love survey questions, testing the new Love questions and writing the new definition.

Step 1: Focus Group

During the virtual Officer Leadership Academy for Area II in January 2022, ZTA and Dyad conducted a focus group with collegians about Zeta Love. Facilitators asked participants, representing multiple schools with varying chapter sizes, how they defined and felt about Love, as well as how they experience Love in their chapters. Then, Dyad analyzed the transcribed focus group audio for trends.

Step 2: New Love Survey Questions

Using direct quotes from the focus group, Dyad developed a comprehensive list of how Zetas define and feel about Love. The list included 14 new statements about Love that could be used in a survey format. “Love is foundational to Zeta Tau Alpha,” said Dr. Joshua Schutts, Chief Research Officer at Dyad Strategies. “The previous questions didn’t capture the way members truly spoke and felt about Love, and therefore may not have fully captured the essence of Love as Zetas feel and experience it.”

Step 3: Testing the New Love Questions

During the virtual Officer Leadership Academy for Area III later in January, nearly 400 collegians completed the pilot Love survey. The full list of 14 statements about Love proved to be strong measures of Zeta Love. Because ZTA asks just six questions per Key Value on the annual Membership Survey, the list was narrowed down to the six Love statements that most resonated with collegians.

Step 4: Writing the New Definition

This proved to be the easiest part of the four-step process. Using the commonalities between the six statements, the new definition of Love became:

• Practices loving oneself in order to better love others

• Shows genuine interest in sisters’ well-being, making them feel appreciated

• Loves sisters steadfastly, enduringly and unconditionally, through moments big and small

LOVE REIMAGINED

The concept of “loving oneself” was a consistent theme that emerged during this process. ZTA intentionally incorporated it into the new definition. ZTA learned that loving oneself is important to collegians, especially when it comes to loving their sisters. “As women, we are often taught to put ourselves last,” said Dr. Zamulinsky. “It is exciting to see a generation of women understand the need to pour into their own well-being first, so they are better positioned to love and serve others.”

Analysis of the 2022 Membership Survey results clearly showed that collegians relate more with this reimagined definition of Love. A .31 increase in the overall Love average indicates significantly more collegians agreed or strongly agreed with the statements about Zeta Love on the most recent survey compared to the previous definition.

The process of redefining Love was truly collaborative, involving collegiate members, National Council, International Office staff and volunteers. ZTA now has an updated definition of Love that better reflects collegians’ lived experiences. Although the definition of Love has changed, one thing will always remain the same; Love truly is “the greatest of all things.”

32 THemis Fall 2022 | Leadership Consultants
“The 2022-2023 Leadership Consultant team is ready to take on the important work awaiting them on the ZTA road this year. After training and Convention to connect with so many of our leaders, they have laid a strong foundation and are sure to leave a positive impact on the organization.”

CELEBRATING HOUSING VOLUNTEERS

Dedicated local volunteers are essential to the success of the ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation. The FHC depends on Housing Advisors across the country to manage projects, provide guidance to chapter officers and alert the Area Housing Coordinators and board about needed repairs. At Convention 2022, the FHC honored two exceptional Housing Advisors for their commitment to overseeing their local facilities.

OUTSTANDING HOUSING ADVISORS

Sarah Schroeder Alessi Housing Advisor

Upsilon Chapter

University of California, Berkeley

When the Fraternity Housing Corporation was looking for a new home for Upsilon Chapter, Sarah (below) took on the role of “house hunter,” researching available listings

and sending the FHC leads. Since then, she has said “yes” to being the Housing Advisor, General Advisor and member of the FHC’s Operations Committee. “Sarah is dedicated to both ZTA and her family,” said Vice President Housing Area III Marnie Marlar Frazier. “She is always willing to help and work hand in hand with National Officers.” Initiated at Kappa Alpha Chapter (Colorado State University), Sarah held several offices in the Ft. Collins, CO Alumnae Chapter before moving to California, where she is now a member and former Secretary of the East Bay, CA Alumnae Chapter.

Ginny Love Watkins

Housing Advisor

Theta Eta Chapter

Stephen F. Austin University

Ginny became Housing Advisor to her collegiate chapter in 2019 after serving as General Advisor from 2017 to 2019 and Program Council Advisor from 2015 to 2017. In nominating her for this award, Vice President Housing Area II Julie Ward Moxley said, “No problem is too big for Ginny. She is ready to jump right into any challenge without hesitation. Ginny is well-connected and respected in the university community and a strong

advocate for ZTA in all aspects of membership.” While she is a working mother, Ginny continues to put ZTA at the top of her priority list and has been a member of the Shreveport, LA Alumnae Chapter since 2015. Chapter delegates accepted the award on her behalf (above).

JULIA MARTHALER HILL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN HOUSING LEADERSHIP

Julia Marthaler Hill

Eta Rho Chapter

The University of North Alabama

At Convention, the FHC also announced the creation of a new biennial award to recognize the dedication that sustains the quality of our facilities and proud tradition of ZTA’s leadership in fraternity/ sorority housing. In announcing Julia Marthaler Hill (above) as the first recipient of the award, FHC President Natalie Yingling Lisko said, “she has been such a driving force for excellence in housing leadership that we have chosen not only to give her the inaugural award,

but also to name the award in her honor.” As National President and a member of the FHC board from 2002 to 2006, as FHC President from 2006 to 2018, and as FHC Vice President Design from 2018 to 2022, Mrs. Hill has collaborated with other board members and alumnae volunteers to create gorgeous and functional spaces where our members can live, study and enhance their sisterhood.

NORA NELL HARDY JACKSON OUTSTANDING HOUSE DIRECTOR AWARD

Patty Thomas

This is the only ZTA award presented to a non-member. The award pays tribute to the role of a key employee in our residential facilities and is named for former FHC President Nora Nell Hardy Jackson. National Council selects the recipient, based on nominations from collegiate chapters.

Alpha Xi Chapter (Indiana University) advisors nominated Patty, the chapter’s House Director since

fall 2018, for this award. Patty had worked as house director at another ZTA chapter and then switched to a men’s fraternity house. One year later, she applied for the opening at IU. She said “yes” to ZTA again, even though she knew the chapter’s future was uncertain due to policy violations and she would replace a longtime, beloved house director who was retiring. She made an immediate connection with the chapter members.

In 2020, house capacity was cut in half and nearly every procedure changed due to COVID. “Patty continued to build relationships and make everyone feel welcome,” said Mentor Carrie Armentrout Hoffeditz. “She goes on walks and hikes with the members. She is kind, thoughtful and fiercely protective of the chapter members.” With grown daughters and grandchildren of her own, she has a fun life story and shares that optimistic mindset with the entire chapter. Chapter delegates accepted the award on her behalf (above).

Fraternity Housing Corporation News | Themis Fall 2022 35

A SISTERHOOD FOUNDED ON LOVE

“I do not want you to think that this is just a literary product, because it is not. When I went back and studied all the records and our background, it was in the Preamble to the first Constitution that I found that the basic principle of the fraternity was Love.”

Shirley Kreasan Krieg Strout spoke these words at Convention 1928, after presenting The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha for the first time. Convention delegates unanimously adopted The Creed then and it has remained unchanged. The Creed proclaimed love as the core of ZTA’s existence, and all other ZTA values grew from that point.

What prompted the need for a creed? Like everyone in the “Roaring 20s,” ZTA was caught up in the whirlwind of exponential growth. During a surge in the U.S. economy and societal changes after World War I, many more women were enrolling in universities. Sororities made their college years more personal with close friendships, organized service projects and, of course, social events. However, some more seasoned ZTA members began to worry that ZTA’s rapid expansion was causing chapters to lose the close, family feeling.

The Founders and Grand Chapter (the original name of National Council) asked Shirley, who was a member of Grand Chapter as EditorHistorian, to write an inspirational document to strengthen the bonds of ZTA sisterhood.

In writing The Creed, Shirley drew inspiration from the original preamble to the Constitution & Bylaws of Zeta Tau Alpha. Written in 1899 by Maud Jones Horner and Odelle Warren Bonham, one of the first three new members, the preamble contains this first mention of the sentiment of love: “The greatest of all things is Love ... therefore, for the purpose of promoting this sentiment, we have banded ourselves together.”

Love became part of the purpose of Zeta Tau Alpha in the mid-20th century, appearing on the first page of the new member manual in 1954: The purpose of Zeta Alpha is the intensifying of friendship, the fostering of a spirit of love, the creating of such sentiments, the performing of such deeds, and the moulding of such opinions as will be conducive to the building up of a purer and nobler womanhood in the world.

The Creed remains the guiding light for ZTA’s values. New members study it in their lessons. Chapters recite it at meetings. ZTA publications include it regularly.

The Founders were very expressive about their love for each other, and how it needed to be nurtured and cared for. The earliest documents in the archives are the ??? letters from the period before ZTA was officially announced to the public. One of the most telling ones is from Mary Campbell Jones Batte, written sometime in early January of 1898 (top right):

36 Themis Fall 2022 | Archives
THIS PRINT OF THE CREED WAS GIVEN IN THE MID20TH CENTURY AS A GIFT TO MEMBERS.

My dear girls:

Cammie did not call out the sister with whom she had a disagreement. Instead, she tried to mend hurt feelings quickly and not let a small thing come between their sisterly bonds of love. Letters like this are reminders that the Founders were all young women with teenage emotions, but they always chose grace, forgiveness and love to maintain harmony in their ranks.

Love was a factor in making difficult decisions in the early years. Closing Alpha and Eta Chapters at Convention 1906 was necessary for ZTA to join the National Panhellenic Congress (now Conference). Speaking about this decision in the November 1906 issue of Themis, Grand President Bruce Houston Davis said:

This Convention, more than any other, has shown us the goal at which we aim, and has made us more willing to give ourselves to our fraternity and to each other. It has fostered such a spirit as will bind us closer and closer together so that we may become entirely an organization held by bonds of love and co-operation, and it will help to make us an active example through life of our realized ideals.

By surrendering important chapters in the hopes of future entry into the NPC, the sisters at Convention 1906 demonstrated a greater love for the Fraternity’s future existence than their own college experiences. A poem about the decision was printed in the November 1906 Themis (bottom left). This early sacrifice proved to be the right decision when ZTA was to admitted to the NPC in 1909.

In the mid-2010s, the fraternity/ sorority community began to discuss how to make recruitment a more meaningful experience with an emphasis on each organization’s values. The NPC moved to a valuesbased recruitment model in 2015.

In 2016, ZTA debuted the Nine Key Values, derived directly from The Creed. The Key Values outline how the sentiment of The Creed remains relevant to today.

Love was an underlying theme at Convention 2022, where speakers addressed the importance of love for yourself, love for ZTA sisters and love for the Fraternity. Love still guides the Fraternity’s decisions and remains the foundation precept for today’s membership. Love always brings sisters back to the reason the Founders first met in 1898—to band together by promoting the sentiment of love.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks for the delightful remembrances. It will always be dear to me, being my first gift from my sisters. My birthday was not a happy one because of the misunderstanding between myself and one of our sisters to whom, as you all well know, I am especially devoted. With lots of love for each of you. Your fond sister, Cammie
POEM
FROM NOVEMBER 1906 THEMIS ABOUT THE HARD DECISION TO CLOSE ALPHA AND ETA CHAPTERS.

In 1994, The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation created the Founders Club to honor alumnae and collegiate chapters and individuals that donate $10,000 or more during the biennium. At Convention 1994, 15 chapters received Founders Club plaques. Over the last 28 years, the number of chapters and individuals qualifying for this award has multiplied, reaching 151 in 2022. As donations grew over the years, the Foundation created additional Founders Club levels.

Congratulations to these chapters and individuals whose contributions during the 2020-2022 biennium helped fund important educational and leadership programming, academic scholarships and philanthropic projects. The Foundation recognized these recipients at Convention 2022.

Those interested in contributing to the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation may do so online at give.zetataualpha.org.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of breast cancer education and awareness as ZTA’s national philanthropy, the Foundation has announced a $500,000 grant to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for a special project.

At Convention 2022, National President Alicia Patten Williams (far right) , Foundation President Carolyn Hof Carpenter and Vice President of Philanthropy Sherry Server Tilley (both left) presented a ceremonial check to Dr. Margaret Flowers, managing director of research programs at the BCRF. Two female researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School will lead the project.

The project brings together artificial intelligence and healthcare to look not just for cancer itself, but for the “seeds” to predict future growth. This methodology promises to provide increased accessibility and diminish the disproportionality of outcomes.
