PROGRAM // OLYMPIC VILLAGE / TRANSIENT HOUSING SITE // HAWTHORNE DEAD MALL, LA PROF // DRAGANA ZORIC + EVAN TRIBUS PARTNER // ALEXIS RICHBART Our thesis formalizes an existing alternative domesticity that inhabits the urban fabric of LA. This mode of living focuses on the ability to move from place to place without any consequences of ownership and permanency, instead one is free to exist where they choose. It critiques the current normative modes of living, by removing the sense of programmatic permanency, and a separation from the “neighbors”. Since the post war era, housing has focused on separation, both within the neighborhood block from one’s fellow neighbors, as well as within the wrapper of the house, fixing domestic functions and creating an understood mode of living. We used the single family home, as a model to analyze the ideal of privacy since the 1920‘s, the normative boundaries of home and the segregation it creates in between neighbors. This separation requires one to have a strong identity in their permanency in the city, which does not fit into the future generations’ needs.
THE CATALOG OF NEIGHBORING

We as a new generation, have been more transient than ever, living with a lack of fixation and with an urgency for movement, questioning the importance of ownership and belonging. This is already a priority in the way transient populations live throughout LA, which opposes to the ideal of privacy. Our populations include visitors, students, homeless, Olympians, who have already adapted their domesticity throughout the urban fabric of LA and reimagined what the boundaries of the home can be. So by formalizing it we obscure the fixed meaning of home and the known ideas on ownership allowing terms such as homeless to become irrelevant. Our proposal takes advantage of the Hawthorne Mall as our site in South LA, now abandoned. We repurpose this icon of self-interested commodity capitalism, for a communal living space. We juxtapose the existing ruin and the new fruitful mode of living.

Architecturally, we deconstruct the iconography of the ‘home’ at the scale of a single individual, to develop multiple scales of occupancy and multiple levels of privacy with the design of our component. It starts to grow from the Dead Mall and cross over the streets to occupy the backyards and the frontyards of the single family homes. By atomizing domestic functions throughout our megastructure, we remove the sense of complete enclosure to allow privacy to exist within a limited seperation from the others. We merge spaces of inhabitation and circulation so that there is no space that can’t be occupied or passed. This indeterminate circulation multiplies opportunities for interaction and limits isolation as one must pass through private space to arrive at any destination. This thesis started as a critique to the proposed Olympic Village for the LA 2024 Olympics and reimagined a new typology of domesticity that will be used as transient housing as the legacy of the Olympics, for the already existing populations of Los Angeles. We believe that this new formalized mode of domesticity, can rethink and start to dominate the residential zoning of Los Angeles in the future.

This project includes three small scale architectural proposals in three different small scale sites that are found in between Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges in Manhattan. They are composed together with several components that adapt themselves to each other. They weave and melt into each other in different forms and each site becomes one space that serve a specific function. The first is “The Reading Corner”, which serves as a space to read which includes different levels of spaces that one could occupy to be alone and isolated from readers occupying the structure at the same time. There is a limited capacity of readers for each level. The second is A PLAYGROUND which is on top of an existing building in Chinatown. The entrance is from the street level where one needs to climb up to start the unique experience of playing. The third proposal is A BACYARD SHED built to activate the backyard of existing townhouses which is filled with trash bags left outside. The initial excersize started with a single collage that is made by my pictures of the 2 bridges and some textures from around the site and its notational drawings. The forms then evolved in different parts of the neighborhood and transformed themselves to suit the unique characteristics of their environment.

Affordable housing is a significant part of New York City. An existing public housing complex in Bronx that accomodates 3000 low income residents, called the Mill Brook Houses was completed in 1959. The whole complex is equivalent to 5 city blocks and the organization of the superblocks do not correspond with the grid system of the city. One part of the system consists 4 diagonal superblocks and the second part has 6 arraying superblocks that flow giantly along the lot. This project aims to critique and challenge the existing spatial experience of the empty park on the groun plane of this housing complex. By examining the surrounding environment to find different typologies of buildings that exist throughout the city, we used them to re define the ground plane of five city blocks. The kit of parts that are selected, are then manipulated to become simpler typologies of different buildings for the neighborhood. They create maze like structures and open spaces in between them for the opportunity to interact at many points. The program of the buildings include banks, grocery stores, hairdressers, nail salons, library etc. to sustain the needs of a neighborhood and praise the communal living. The outdoor spaces belong to the adjacent building and become public spaces for both the residents and the visitors of the complex at all times.

This project renews the existing boathouse of Columbia University in Inwood, New York. The existing building does not have enough storage and is not convenient in terms of logistics for the rowers and the academy because it does not relate to its site and its environment. The site is under a hill with the stadium and includes a deck, where the rowers start their practice from. The curvature of the building is designed to allow for the best circulation in the exterior for the trucks to load and unload the boats. The building includes classrooms and office spaces for the coaches on the ground floor and the storage, gym, dressing rooms for the rowers on the upper floor. The rower starts from the dressing room and then move down into the storage to get his/her boat and walk right through the deck infront. The facade is made from ceramic tubes that run along the building horizontally, which break the sunglight while entering to the building.

Our dormitory project indicates a concept which highlights the importance of 2 different space organizations in 2 almost seperate buildings. These two parts of the building are different in terms of their progammatic values as well as their circulation characteristics. There is a system to provide an exterior circulation at one part of the building, praising more of ehe communal aspect of living in a dorm, where as the other side respects more into privacy and individuality. There is a common circulation space in the middle of the two seperate parts of the building which creates the buffer zone and a vertical atrium that allows light into two different parts of the building in different angles. The structure of the two parts also serves to enhance the concept of duality in our building. Lastly, the interior space organizations are designed for different types of students who can have the opportunity to decide which type of space they want to accomodate.

FLOW PROGRAM // TOURIST COMPLEX SITE // VIA DEI TEATRO MARCELLO, ROME PARTNER // SAM PEDIREDLA PROF // LAWRENCE ZEROTH Via Dei Teatro Marcello is a very crowded road that does not have any traffic lights for all the tourist who are walking around Rome to cross the street. Our intervention through this road connects the stairs that go up to Michelangelo’s piazza to the new piazza we create in front of Teatro Marcello. The elevated walkways allows to carry people from one point to another by taking over existing land conditions and some buildings that are embedded through this controlled circulation. There is a 2 way pedestrian traffic that includes different experiences and programs along the way that is parallel to the road below but also gives access to cross the street. The library is hidden under the pool level, which is a high hill that connects to the level of Museo Campidoglio. Going down to southwest, one hits the redesigned marketplace that uses the existing columns of an ancient Roman market, before reaching the piazza and the Teatro Marcello. The existing buildings that are taken over become a public spa with its courtyard that opens up to the back street. By this configuration, we aim to intersect and connect different levels of Rome’s history, without disturbing the existing car traffic on the road, but changing the experience of the pedestrian circulation, by creating an outdoor complex for the tourists and the people of Rome.

Chinatown becomes more and more famous every day. The rent prices increase due to the increase in population. The analysis on the right is a count of American and Asian populations that cross the corner of our site for the library. The library consists of stacked volumes that each have a different program within the library. There are book stacks, indoor lounges and reading rooms. The hallway in the middle connects all circulation together. The enclosures within different rooms softens by the use of plastic tubes that divide spaces up in the interior and become a facade element on the exterior. The library also has an auditorium at the basement which is accessible through the ramps that connects to the ground floor and become the entrance to the library.

TESSELLATE PROGRAM // ACADEMY SITE // WAVE HILL, BRONX, NY PROF // KAREN BAUSMAN This academy with classrooms, lecture rooms and galleries is on a site at the Wave Hill Gardens. It is carefully built around a tree which casts shadows on the structures at different times. The form is made from a hexagon divided into triangles which is turned into a three-dimensional pentagon which then tessellates with other pentagons by sharing a triangle surface in space, to move around different directions in space. There is ‘the stone’ that grows from the earth (the solid interior walls), ‘the feather’ (the roof) and ‘the wrapper’ that holds up the roof. The size of the openings varies accordingly and thus creates different shadows within the interior space. The courtyard also follows the lines of tesselation throughout the plan and then offsets to create voids in between the wood panels to engage more with the nature and the ground.

MAPPING OF A LIBRARY MAPPING AND ANALYSIS SITE // PRATT INSTITUTE LIBRARY PROF // MICHELE GORMAN The analysis of a space is significant before interventing it. For the second semester of architecture school, I mapped out shadows, light and footsteps of myself and other people that are walking around the library lcoated in our Pratt Brooklyn Campus. Because the floors are made from foggy glass and there is a gap on the floor where each shelf meets with the floors, I could see and follow people who are walking below and above me. Both the drawings and the models are representations of mapping of movement through the space.

METAL PIECES IN PLAN
This is an interference to one of a series of townhouses in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. The dwelling was required to be designed for the needs of two characters: A SCULPTOR AND AN ORNITHOLOGIST. To be more specific with these given characters, I chose Alexander Calder to be the sculptor to share this dwelling with the ornithologist to work and to sleep. The two drawings on the right are body mappings of the two characters. Calder cuts the metal pieces that is needed for his sculpture on a cutting table and the ornithologist catches the birds into a built cage to make his studies. The original townhouse floors are folded and shifted to create different characteristics of the dwelling which are based on the movements of the characters and which also forbids the two characters to engage and to see each other at some levels to give them enough privacy while working. There is a bird tunnel that runs through the building for the ornithologist, and spaces with different slants and lighting conditions for Calder to work in.

INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE ANTALYA
“ÖTEKI“ / “THE OTHER” EXPERIMENTAL SPACE DESIGN SITE // KALEICI, ANTALYA EISENMAN ARCHITECTS When EAA was invited to the International Architecture Bienanle in Antalya in 2013, I was the main designer for the ‘experimental space’ design. Kaleici is the historic city center in Antalya. It was confined within castle walls and still have structures from the Roman era. Our space aims to reflect the history of Kaleici and how it has changed, with the composition of digital films of people, views and abandoned buildings of Antalya and some historical objects that were collected from locals that live in Kaleici. Our site is a basement that does not have any light and different pockets of spaces that we chose the occupy with projection screens and the objects. One of the films include a women at the age of 85 and who have been living her apartment since she was born, which we both visited and recorded.

LIGET BUDAPEST COMPETITION PROGRAM // MUSIC HALL SITE // BUDAPESTE, HUNGARY EISENMAN ARCHITECTS During the first couple of days of my internship, the office was trying to submit the drawings for the Hungarian Music Hall Competition in Budapest, so I worked on the latest drawings to be sent to the competition with Peter and his assistants.

POZZUOLI RESIDENCES PROGRAM // HOUSING SITE // POZZUOLI, ITALY EISENMAN ARCHITECTS For the most half of the internship, I worked on creating a new scheme for the Pozzuoli Residences’ facade. There are many blocks that have different schemes according to which direction the facade is facing. A lot of models were made all by hand of the whole site with proposed blocks with their different facade studies.

PROGRAM // GALLERY + OFFICES SITE // DOLAPDERE, ISTANBUL EMRE AROLAT ARCHITECTURE The existing building in a low income district was purchased be renovated into a gallery space with office spaces. The organization of the whole building in plan is redesigned to be able to have better circulation throughout the building. The facade is made of mobile panels which are controlled from he inside and which would have different announcements of upcoming exhibitions or desired artwork. The back of the building, which originally only had 2 floors becomes a transparent white cube which its ceiling is made from angled panels that prevents the sun light to come into the gallery space at180 degrees at all times.

ÉTANT DONNÉS / MARCEL DUCHAMP SMALL SCALE CONSTRUCTION PART TIME ASSISTANT TO SERKAN ÖZKAYA By the connection of my friend who is the main assistant for Serkan Ozkaya, a Turkish, New York based artist, he asked me to join to work on replicating Marcel Duchamp’s Etant donnes piece for one his future exbitions. First I worked on getting measurements from Marcel Duchamp’s found sketchbook to most accurately build a 3D model of the structure. We got materials and worked at the shops for a few weeks to cut the different pieces of the wood which we later took to Serkan’s studio to assemble. The structure itself is built from wood panels and sticks and includes a brick wall which we replicated out of foam, giving it the texture for the brick. Where one views the artpiece - from the peephole, the structure cannot be seen as a whole but the part after the brick wall is seen which creates the image that people see. In this view there is a table with branches and a molded figure on top. The height of the table and the angle to the peephole is very significant tohave the accuracy that Duchamp had created.
