EXECUTIVE SUMMARY


Common Features • They think learning Chinese would be helpful for future career.

• The classes are not continuous enough because of inefficient homework, which mainly due lack of proper teaching material. (According to the teacher, only homework he gives is preview the next part is because the exercise on textbook is not proper for the students.)

• They use Chinese mainly in simple daily tasks, and get frustrated when there are some communication problems. • They have average 5 good Chinese friends and meet mainly for class and lunch, and they often have misunderstanding problems when working together. • They are not motivated in Chinese class and leave Chinese class for different reasons including they are tired (classes are in the evening), something else to do or they feel there’s nothing new to learn(for students who are motivated to learn Chinese) . • All agreed that the timing of the class is horrible (18.3021.00) • Students have difficulties to improve on speaking especially pronunciation because they lack of feedback.

• They are interested when teacher introduce Chinese culture or ask about their culture. Generally students are very eager to learn about Chinese culture. • Some students are confused about which level to choose. • They would like to experience Chinese culture but don’t have access to it, because they can’t browse the Chinese internet due language problems. • They meet problems because are unable to read Chinese characters.


Low Expectations • They do not expect much on their Chinese. • Some students missed class for traveling. They hope that the class time would be flexible. • They feel inconvenient not recognizing Chinese characters. • They expect more practical homework to motivate them to learn Chinese. They would like to have more continuous learning and more feedback and push from the teacher, because they are not self-motivated, but are willing to learn. • They think grammar and speaking are easier, and realize the importance of learning Chinese characters after some time but are not motivated and do not have the tools to do so.

High Expectations • Have a strong interest in Chinese culture and learn Chinese out of interests. • They can not fully participate because the levels of students are different. • Some exercises in class are below their level. • Their aim is to learn comprehensive Chinese. • They are able to study by themselves after class.
