Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

A symbol is a sign with fixed meaning, representing its ‘dynamic object’ formally. A sign (such as symbol, icon, and index) is a tool to represent something in a representational way. Diagram is an abstract and simple way to describe things. In contrast with signs and symbols, diagrams do not try to show things as they really are but try to work as information bridges between design concepts and design outcomes systematically, providing more design outcomes.

Comment on modeling process

The first step of my modeling process is doing research about Serpentine Pavilion, and then I find the intention of designing the random patterns on surfaces is based on algorithms of geometry and the whole pavilion can be divided into three parts: frame, extrusion, and glass. Secondly, I draw the base curves and outline of six surfaces. Thirdly, I extrude the curves to obtain the main frame structure of this pavilion. Lastly, I use the base curves to split six surfaces to finish the extrusions and glass part. 3


Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

The temporary pavilion by Toyo Ito can be used in a similar way as ‘Raised Sidewalk’ at Buenos Aires. The in-between space of the frame or solids can be a fantastic place for people to sit and lean on (Fig.5). The width of this frame can make this space become comfortable. The man in this picture is enjoying his reading time in this in-between space and he can chat with his friends in the interior and exterior space. Moreover, tables and chairs that can be moved easily also provide possibility of appropriation of use.

Week Two

Isometric

Modeling process: Firstly, I draw the base curves and outline of six surfaces. Secondly, I extrude the curves to obtain the main frame structure of this pavilion. Lastly, I use the base curves to split six surfaces to finish the extrusions and glass part. In this isometric view, I chose to show the frame, glazing, solids and the structure under the glazing. I also follow the plan view to build the stairs for this pavilion. Circulation, threshold and construction: The key concept of this precedent study is to use algorithms of geometry to create random pattern on surface. The circulation of this pavilion is shaped by four entrances. Most visitors chose to use the main entrance of this pavilion, which leads to the serpentine gallery. The bar and information wall in the interior space can also influence the circulation. Moreover, based on the research, in the interior space, the tables and chairs can be moved around easily, and people prefer to sit in the corner or near the boundaries; in the exterior space, people like to sit together as a group and face the pavilion. There are four entrances of this pavilion: one main entrance can be accessed by slope and three can be accessed by stairs. The threshold of this pavilion can be defined by three structures: glazing, solids, and frame. The solids and frame used the same white-painted material in contrast to the blue glazing.

The circulation of this pavilion is shaped by four entrances. Most visitors chose to use the main entrance of this pavilion, which leads to the building in serpentine garden. The bar and information wall in the interior space can also influence the circulation.

The threshold of this pavilion can be defined by three structures: glazing, solids, and frame. The solids and frame used the same whitepainted material in contrast to the blue glazing.

Process Step1-2 Doing reaearch and draw base curve

The first step of my modeling process is doing research about Serpentine Pavilion, and then I find the intention of designing the random patterns on surfaces is based on algorithms of geometry and the whole pavilion can be divided into three parts: frame, extrusion, and glass. The frame of this pavilion is formed by the base curves. The origin of base curves is rotation of five different squares and extension of the boundaries, and I have attempted to create the pattern on the top by using this design intension but fail. I think maybe after several times of rotation, Toyo makes some change to the final outcome to meet aesthetic requirement.

I extrude the base curves to obtain the main frame structure of this pavilion. Lastly, I use the base curves to split and extrude six surfaces to finish the extrusions and glass part. During this process, I find it is very difficult to let the solids to fit the frame as when I offset surface to create the frame I forgot to check the directions. So I delete all the frame and start over again, and then it works.

Comment

The last step is combining everything together, I change the color and transparency of the glass layers to represent the character of this material. Therefore, in the top view of my rhino model, the structure under the glass can be seen clearly. However, the rendering tool in rhino is so rough so I attempt to use Key-shot to render my model again to make it more real. The second photo in this page is rendered by Key-shot. The figure 12 is my first attempt of threshold diagram. In this diagram, the basic structure of this pavilion has been represented: solids, glazing, and frame.

Comment

Based on the photos of this pavilion, I have found the circulation of it is shaped by the four entrances. Most people chose to use the main entrance which leads to the serpentine gallery. In the interior space, there is a main circulation area which formed by four curves. People always move in this area. The bar is very popular, and many people chose to lean on the bar table to chat with each other. However, the information wall seems to be quieter.

Comment

The tables and chairs can be moved around easily, and people prefer to sit in the corner or near the boundaries; in the exterior space, people prefer to sit together and face the pavilion. Moreover, the in-between spaces of frame and solids can also be used as a space to relax.
