Community Architecture. The endeavor of planning a civic space is one of the most challenging and rewarding undertakings a city will experience. The Community Architecture Studio at Ziegler Cooper Architects (ZCA) understands the importance of the planning process and its relationship to a successful project: be it a master plan, a fire station, a city hall, a public library, a community center, a public park, or simply a place of gathering. Your facility is important to your community, and each space requires careful thought. Every project is an exercise in stewardship. We are ready to take this journey with you. We have the skills, experience, and passion to help you lead your community into the future.

Our Process.
Let us design a space for your community to flourish. RESEARCH-BASED DESIGN ZCA has a well established reputation as “Community Architects”. Our past and current clients can attest to our ability to listen to their needs, partnering with them to facilitate an interactive design process as we seek solutions together, and stay within budget. We believe in a research-based design approach, which allows us to understand our clients’ specific needs and build stronger relationships with the communities we work for. INTEGRATED ARCHITECTURAL TEAM We work in a studio format. As a team of design professionals, we are dedicated to your planning and architectural needs. Our integrated team approach ensures a continuity of design, critical expertise, and creative problem-solving. As a team, it is our belief that we must listen to our client’s needs, challenge them, and encourage their participation. It is our intention to become your community’s advocate. We will walk with you through the entire process and help ensure your success. OUR VISION The Community Architecture Studio at ZCA is comprised of a group of people who love architecture. We take pride in our work and are passionate about partnering with our clients, but more importantly, our work isn’t just our job—we have the incredible honor and privilege to join with you as you build communities and bring people together. We will not push an architectural agenda or force a certain style on your building. We are here to take your dreams and visions and work with you to discern how to make them real, tangible, practical, and physical things. We work with you to design spaces that both inspire and meet the needs of your community. It is easy to get caught up in all the practicalities, numbers, and aesthetics, but at the end of the day, it is about the municipalities and the communities they serve.

Putting Out Fires. Fire stations are vital to the community they serve and the fire department they house. They are more than just a maintenance and storage facility for equipment, engines, and other emergency vehicles. A fire station also operates as a temporary place of residence for fire personnel and must accommodate other functions such as recreation, administration and training, and community outreach and education. The type of emergency that the fire station responds to often dictates the building’s size, location, and design. The size of the building is usually determined by the types of spaces needed for maintenance, administration, training, and residential. ZCA has extensive experience in fire station planning and design. Our experience includes the renovation of six existing fire stations and public safety headquarters, five new fire stations and public safety headquarters, and one fire station currently under construction. ZCA understands the needs of fire departments, and we have the necessary experience to efficiently design functional fire stations that service their fire departments and communities.

Civic Involvement. Civic buildings bring people together and give a community purpose. They are both a physical and symbolic representation for the community. They should not only inspire people’s lives, but enrich them. Civic buildings should express an institution’s mission, help improve awareness, and even help increase funding for the institution. To inspire iconic and creative designs for these projects are essential because they have a purpose to serve. They are critical for constant growth. ZCA is committed to helping evolve the ways in which architecture supports and fosters civic involvement. For the past two decades, we have been involved with the planning and design of civic buildings, including libraries, courthouses, city halls, parks, police stations, and more. ZCA creates unique expressions for the community.

Planning For Growth. In today’s world, sustainable cities, towns, campuses, parks, and communities are essential. The planning, design, and use of a space emphasizes physical form, economic function, and social impact on the surrounding environment. Planning involves the redevelopment and revitalization of communities along with working with similar fields of landscape architecture, civil engineering, and public administration to help achieve a strategic and sustainable goal. Also concerned with the development and use of land, planning is responsible for the development of both rural and agriculture land, water use, parks, and conservation areas. Community involvement has become a critical drive in shaping cities, towns, and parks. ZCA’s portfolio is diverse in project time and size. Our designs are economically sustainable, while environmentally and socially friendly, and approachable. We collaborate with our clients and partners to set and achieve specific goals and to ensure a quality project.
Building Community. Community-based and nonprofit organizations operate within a given area, ensuring desired improvements and social changes. These organizations have a better understanding of the community and addressing the community’s needs. The facility must capture the organization’s character in aesthetics, but should also preserve, strengthen, and serve the surrounding community, while fulfilling the organization’s own needs. Lastly, the facility should also convey a sense of belonging by inviting the public and by building up the surrounding community. ZCA understands and knows how important community based and nonprofit organizations are within the community. ZCA has designed various community spaces arranging from elaborate to simple in design, but always maintaining our client’s aesthetic and economic goal. ZCA has the skills, experience, and passion, and we are ready to take the journey with you to help build your community.
