CO-LIVING R REDEFINING the concept of a 'home' E S E A R C H E S The goal is to combine design aesthetics and quality with privacy in an environment where there are also shared resources in a communal space. The social mix include students, singles, professional couples, single parents with 1-2 children, families of 2 adults and 1 or 2 children, elderly individuals or couples, and retirees. They cater to all kinds of travelers and professionals, including those who are older, so they understand that different people have different expectations and needs. Grade kitchens and large en suite bedrooms place Roam at the higher end of the luxury spectrum, what really sets them apart from hotels or a traditional residential setting is the community aspect. What differentiates co-living is the fact that you can land into a really interesting, rich, and diverse group of people who share a common thread. There will be an element of like-mindedness in the group, but at the same time, there will be variety. It won’t just be young professionals, older corporate individuals, retired individuals, creatives, or students. It’ll be all of these different kinds of people bringing in their own stories and backgrounds.
Co-living is a modern housing option that gives residents an opportunity to not only share their living space with one another, but also share similar intentions, values, and interests. It’s all about collaboration and openness in the 21st century. The sharing economy, along with an increased interest in living more sustainably and being part of a community, have inspired the birth of businesses such as Roam, making it easy to find flexible, affordable housing that’s centrally located in top locations across the globe. Even the most outgoing people sometimes need a little time alone, and with co-living spaces, you can certainly have the best of both. So, even though co-living fosters a sense of community and of being around others and collaborating with them, you can still enjoy some much-needed quiet time.

FUJIAN TULOU
As the researches of Fujian Tulou, the building appeared as a circle. The buildings can be divided into two parts, outside circle and inside circle. The outside circle in Fujian Tulou are built for the protection of fire and wars, the circle worked well when attacks occurred. The attacks would happen in any corner. Circles don’t have any angles so the walls in Fujian Tulou are circled. I was inspired by the ‘surrounded’ construction of Fujian Tulou, since actually there are few wars these years, but it can be used as the protection of the elder people and students in social mix. The ground fIoor of the earth building is usually the dining room kitchen. The second fIoor is aware house for storage. The third fIoor is where people live,
and the bedrooms are all independent rooms for individuals or families. Inside the earthen building, people not only share the kitchen and the shrine, but also have a good private space. The entire earth building composed of different people with different cultures and ideas from the original immigrants, has now formed a big family with its own independent culture. Tulou and its extensive relateddocuments and archives refIect the emergence innovation, and development of outstanding artin civil architecture over the past sevencenturies. The well-arranged interior space, with some beautifully decorated surfaces, not onlymeets the physical and spiritual needs of thecommunity, but also reflects the development ofcomplex societies in remote and potentiallyhostile environments in extraordinary ways.
SPACES ARRANGMENT

For example, the rooms for elder people and teenagers can be designed inside circle to prevent the thieves. Another way, the inside circle is located in first floor, and for elder people it is convenient, so they don’t need go upstairs if they have problems in their legs. Same way, students between 10-20 need a safe space. In Fujian Tulou, the storage room is nearby the lineage hall, so people can store their things in the storage room. For my design, the room for

storage is located in third floor too where is nearby the bedroom. People need the spaces to store their clothes and so on. The hidden corridors are located nearby the edge of the external walls which is used when the accidents occur. For my design, the corridors are surrounded and linked each floor and room, same as Fujian for avoid the accidents. Same as the Fujian tulou, the living rooms are located in first level.

SITE A N A L Y S I S
LOCATION : Jersey City, New Jersey 07305, USA (40.702197, -74.066220)
Site
This site is not very far from New York with affordable housing prices. The routes here is the closest routes from my building to New York. It is about 6 miles away from New York.
The site is surrounded by the high way, the ‘ring like’ road wrap up the site. There are few threes and grasses in the site. There are no buildings close to the site, so it is easy to get sunlight no matter summer or winter.

Elevations
From concept design, the social areas are not much except the the roofs of second floor and third floor are extended as social areas. In the middle of the buildings (near by the library building), there are few areas for people to social activities, so I used the roof area for extra areas. People can drinking coffee, reading, talking under the big umbrellas. For family numbers, it is easy to go to the roof through the glass wall. For younger people, they can just go up stairs to find the areas.
