There is a really relevant meme which perfectly describes the situation in Poland. It’s basically a badly drawn picture with a few different lines, the author states “they won’t cross that line”, meanwhile “they” are already much further on the right and crossed the mentioned line long ago. There is no doubt that over the course of the last few years, Polish ruling party (PiS) took the country so far right it caught some people by surprise. I can recall many conversations with my friends or family saying “oh they won’t do this, it’s too far” or “people will not allow them to do that” yet almost every time it turned out not to be correct. I wonder if it’s some kind of denial instead of just plain ignorance. After all, waking up in a semi-autocratic state can be a surreal experience for each of us. Of course the biggest example of a step in that direction was a recent sadistic abortion ban delivered by the current parody of constitutional tribunal. A lot of different insightful comments on this topic have already been made by people more appropriate and knowledgeable than me. However there’s one issue which indirectly led to this ban (and will lead to further breaching of human rights in the future, I’m sure), which triggers me really hard. Under the guise of “pluralism” I see the liberal media giving space to various ultraconservatives who take our public debate even further to the right. Recent case was with one of bigger Polish newspapers, inviting a religious fundamentalist for an interview (Dziennik Gazeta Prawna with Marzena Korzekwa-Kaliszuk). She spoke of “eugenic abortion” (which is by the way, one of the biggest lies coined by the so called “pro-lifers”) and the necessity to prosecute by law women who had an abortion. As long as mainstream media continue to legitimize such beliefs it will only get worse. It’s a case of a concept known as “paradox of tolerance”, which states that if society is tolerant without a limit, it will eventually be destroyed by intolerance. It’s a self-delusion at this point but I was at least hoping that the line may be drawn after recent attack on private media, unfortunately not much has changed after the protest. See you again in a couple months (or weeks) when the line will get shifted even further to the right. 24
