Happy December to all! :) I once again want to start this issue with a BIG THANK YOU to everyone for being so patient and also caring during the past two months. Some of you may or may not know that my dad had a very serious heart attack in October, which sent him to a hospital about two hours away from my house, he is still in the hospital, but doing a whole lot better than he was. He is in rehab to rebuild his strength, which is improving a whole bunch. The doctors estimated that he might be home on the 18th of this month! That would be the ultimate Christmas gift, that’s for sure. He and my family have been my main focus lately, so this magazine has been a little bit of a lower quality, which I’m sorry about, but WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN
I am glad that you all have been understanding of it. Thank you all again for your kind words and well wishes to me and my family at this time. We can only hope he can come home soon. I definitely miss seeing him every day. Now, about this month’s issue... like I mentioned, it’s a bit on the lesser side this time around, but I tried to still hit a lot of the main point that have happened since last month the best that I could. We touch upon the ending of the reputation tour, Taylor’s record company switch and so on! Hope you enjoy. :)

Taylor Swift has signed a new multi-year contract with Universal Music Group with UMG’s Republic Records serving as her label partner in the U.S. Swift’s first record deal with the Nashville-based Big Machine Records where she signed as one of the label’s flagship artists at age 15 ended less than a month ago. Swift announced the new deal via social media on Monday (Nov. 19). Her new Republic label mates include Maddie & Tae, the Avett Brothers, Ariana Grande, the Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Lorde and Drake. “I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Scott Borchetta for believing in me as a 14-year-old and for guiding me through over a decade of work that I will always be proud of,” Swift wrote on Instagram. “I’m extremely grateful to get to do what I love, especially with the people I’ve been fortunate enough to work with.” Specific details of Swift’s new deal were not made public. But she will own her own master recordings, and she did reveal she signed with UMG based on the company
making any sale of their Spotify shares result in a distribution of money to their artists without any financial payback. That primarily means UMG will not be able to regain subsequent profits from its artists through any sale of Spotify shares, and the artists will continue to collect. “They have generously agreed to this, at what they

believe will be much better terms than paid out previously by other major labels,” Swift explained. “I see this as a sign that we are headed towards positive change for creators – a goal I’m never going to stop trying to help achieve, in whatever ways I can.” As a Big Machine artist, Swift rose to become one of the most successful female
artists of all time. She is the only artist in history with four albums that have sold more than one million copies in their first week of release — 2010’s Speak Now, 2012’s RED, 2014’s 1989 and 2017’s reputation, respectively. Here lies Taylor Swift’s reputation — or at least the final nail in the coffin of her Reputation era. Since its release last November, Swift’s sixth album has kept a deserved hold on the pop narrative of the last year, but on Friday, the album and its singles were all suspiciously absent from the Grammy nominations list, save for one lone recognition in the Best Pop Vocal Album Category. Over the past decade, Swift has become one of pop’s most decorated stars. At age 20, she became the youngest artist to ever win Album of the Year when her sophomore LP Fearless took home the night’s biggest trophy. In 2016, she became the first woman to win that achievement twice as the main credited artist with her 1989 full-pop tilt. Since the beginning of its rollout last summer with the release of the jarring, villainous, defensive “Look What You Made Me Do,” Reputation has been Swift’s most divisive album yet. The response to the single alone stirred up intense feelings from fans and critics: some praised her bold new sound and reclamation of her quickly WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN
turning tide on her previously unimpeachable public image while others considered the electroclash-lite tune to be a sonic, point-missing mess. Upon the album’s actual release, Reputation began to win more people back. It was praised by many for taking risks without sacrificing Swift’s inimitable knack for lyrical pop narrative-building. The darkness, bitterness and looming danger turned out to be positive spins for Swift’s career and sound. She sold 2 million copies worldwide in the first week and was the third biggest album of 2017. Even without much 2018 push for the album and its singles, Reputation was the biggest-selling album of the year, according to Billboard, and Swift was the highestranked artist. The LP’s fourth
single “Delicate” evolved into a sleeper hit this year, staying on the Hot 100 for nearly a year and eventually becoming a massive radio hit. Of course, even with Swift’s previous album 1989 being more quickly adored, its Album of the Year win was mired in controversy given its juxtaposition against Kendrick Lamar’s astounding To Pimp a Butterfly. It continued conversations about the Grammys’ relationship with not only black artists but rap music as well, being sandwiched between two even more controversial upsets for Beyoncé, whose selftitled LP and Lemonade both lost Album of the Year to Beck and Adele respectively. This year’s eight-album lineup is deservedly hip-hop and R&B-heavy, with Kendrick Lamar’s Black Panther soundtrack, Drake’s Scorpion, Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy,
H.E.R.’s H.E.R., Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys and Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer fighting against modern folk prophet Brandi Carlile’s By the Way, I Forgive You and Kacey Musgraves’ own Swiftian countrypop crossover Golden Hour. While Song and Record of the Year are more pop-centric, with nominations for Shawn Mendes, Zedd and Lady Gaga in either one or both category, not even Swift’s “Delicate” could make the final cut, even being snubbed in Pop Performance as well. Though odd, Swift’s lack of nominations could, in the most ideal sense, signal a changing of the guard when it comes to what can be considered an award-worthy album. The last few years of Album of the Year nominations have seen more rap and R&B nominees than ever before. The absence of a marquee pop LP could open the floor up to the second hiphop album of all time to win the title, following in the footsteps of OutKast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill won in 1999, but it’s classified as R&B.) The face of what we expect a “Grammy darling” to be could change forever.

The Ally Coalition show in New York just got served a superstar moment, when Hayley Kiyoko welcomed Taylor Swift to the stage for a special duet. Kiyoko introduced the pop superstar as a “rising artist that just signed to Universal.” Well, the second part is accurate. The pair then smashed a stripped-back version of Reputation hit “Delicate,” with TayTay accompanying on acoustic guitar. Also during Wednesday night’s concert, Lana Del Rey debuted two new songs with Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff who, with his sister, fashion designer Rachel Antonoff, organizes the event, which raises funds and advocates for homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth. The 2018 show took place at Town Hall in New York City with Regina Spektor, Fun. multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost, Rostam, Jacqueline Novak and others on the bill.

What most fans suspected is now official: Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium Tour is officially the highest-grossing tour in U.S. history. And, when it comes to touring, no other artist comes close to her success over the past decade. Between May 8 and October 6, Swift performed 38 dates across the country. Those shows were enough to gross $266.1 million on ticket sales of over 2 million. It’s the highest-grossing U.S. tour since Billboard Boxscore began tracking touring data three decades ago. The previous record for the highest-grossing tour was held by The Rolling Stones’ 200507 A Bigger Bang Tour, which played 70 shows to Swift’s 38. Swift previously held the highest-grossing domestic tour for a woman: her The 1989 World Tour’s U.S. take was $181.5 million. FORBES recently named Swift the second-highest-paid Woman in Music for 2018, with an estimated $80 million in pretax earning during the June 2017 - June 2018 scoring period. That put her just below Katy Perry (with an estimated $83 million, thanks in large part to her $20 million American Idol contract) and Beyonce ($60 million). Swift will almost certainly claim the top spot for 2019 thanks to the
majority of the tour dates falling in the 2019 scoring period. Notably, Swift’s Reputation Tour featured an all-female primary lineup. She was supported by pop acts Camila Cabello and Charli XCX. Swift’s tour set attendance records and made history in many of the cities it played. Swift became the first female artist to headline three consecutive nights at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, the first female to sell out three nights at Massachusetts’ Gillette Stadium, and, in Ireland, the first female artist to headline Dublin’s famed Croke Park twice.
