FROM THE
Welcome to the July issue of ZINEthirteen everyone! :) We have gotten so much positive news about Taylor in the past month, but sadly, some not so great news. The not so great is the whole Scott & Scooter situation. I am still in shock over the whole thing. I feel so terrible for Taylor. She is an artist who truly cares about the music she creates and deserves to own every single aspect of it. Let’s all hope that one day Taylor does get to own her Masters. But, in the meantime, she has an even brighter future to look forward to! We FINALLY learned what the album name is!!! YAAASSSS!!!!! SO excited that we now can call the next album, WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN
“Lover” rather than TS7! The cover and color scheme of this next album are so happy and beautiful. I can’t even image what the visuals are going to be like during the tour this time around! The crowd will definitely be a whole lot more colorful as well! :) SO many great things to look forward to and we don’t even have the album yet. August 23rd is the full release and nobody can CLAM DOWN! ;) Which, we also got a 2nd single over the past month as well. YAAASSS! Cant we just take a moment to appreciate “You Need to Calm Down”?! This song is so catchy and has such a huge, inspirational meaning behind it. I love the fact that Taylor is
using her gigantic platform to voice her opinion on all the hate the LGBT+ community receives. Yes, there has been progress in our country towards those who are LGBT+, but it certainly is not enough. Everyone should have equal rights and everyone should be able to love who they want to love without being attacked for it. Everyone would always bash Taylor for not speaking up about her political views, well folks, HERE SHE IS! Not everyone is happy with her decision to speak up, but I certainly am SO proud of our Taylor! It’s wonderful to see someone with as much power and influence as Taylor, stand up for those who feel like they may not have a voice. This
helps others to speak up too. Just like when she went to trial for her sexual assult case. This helped women everywhere speak up and now, Taylor is proving how important is once again speak up and fight for what is right. Please continue to sign her change.org petition for the Equality Act! Show your support! www.change.org/p/ support-the-equality-act

LIVESTREAM Taylor’s Instagram Livestream: What Did We Learn? ZINETHIRTEEN

So, Taylor broke Instagram with over 100k viewers on her livestream. I mean, are we surprised? We FINALLY can stop calling the next album TS7 because we officially learned that the title is “Lover” — which will be released August 23rd. Oh, and if you add 8 (for August) + 2 + 3 (for 23) = 13! You know, always about the 13. ;) But, wait...she also said she was releasing a new single called “You Need to Calm Down” at midnight est. We are IN LOVE with this single. It not only is catchy, but has great meaning behind it to be insanely inspirational. Taylor shows she is a true ally to the LGBT+ community with this tune. YOU GO TAYLOR! There is a music video to follow up with the song release on June 17th, premiering on GMA. What else do we know? Lover will contain 18 tracks, which is SO HUGE. I can’t wait to hear what else she has for us! There will be 4 deluxe version of the album, which are going to be at Target. These albums will contain exclusive content from Taylor, such as audio clips of her songwriting process, similar to what she did for 1989. The deluxe version will also have a lyric book, Taylor journal entries, blank journal, and special poster. Each of the 4 deluxe versions ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 24 JULY 2019
will have different items in each. The deluxe albums cost $16.99 each and if you preorder all 4 at once, you will receive a $5 Target gift card. Taylor mentioned that this album will be “very romantic.” Not just thematically, it will not be just love songs. She said that romance can be found in lonliness, sadness or going
through conflics in your life. Taylor also told us that she is collaborating with fashion designer, Stella McCartney and stated that Stella was a friend and woman who she really respects. This will be timed with the launch of the album, but those are the only details we have so far. We also have a bunch of
new merch to make our bank accounts cry. DARN YOU TAYLOR! We definitely have learned quite a bit about Lover, but there is still much, much more to discover over the coming months. It’s so exciting to look forward to all of the new things coming our way! Love you, Taylor! :) WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN Taylor Sends a Message to All Those Who Hate & Shows Her True Support ZINE THIRTEEN
TANYA OHNMEISS

You need to just stop...like, can you just not? Is something I would NEVER say to Taylor, because this song is absolutely AMAZING. Not only is this song a true bop, but it holds a special message to support the LGBT+ community. Because we ALL deserve equal rights. Why? BECAUSE WE ARE ALL EQUAL AND DESERVE TO BE TREATED AS SUCH. NO MATTER WHAT OUR DIFFERENCES MIGHT BE. It’s honestly pretty pathetic that at this point, there are still people in this world who refuse to accept others for who they are and are ridiculously judgemental. NEWS FLASH! Everyone doesn’t need to follow the “social normalcy” that has been placed by those before us. The sooner we support one another, the sooner we have less hate in this world. I truly feel for the girl in Mean Girls when she said “I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy.” SERIOUSLY. Taylor is using her platform to speak about what she believes in and shows so, so much support to the LGBT+ community with this new song. There is definitely going to be a lot of backlash from people, but to Taylor, it is worth it to be a strong voice for something she cares about. I applaud Taylor SO much for this. She is a true inspiration and ally. WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN
Single art for “You Need to Calm Down”
Taylor started out Pride Month with her Equality Act petition and continues to speak up about equality with “You Need to Calm Down.” Like Taylor, I am an ally of the LGBT+ community and I am so proud to have Taylor as my role model. She is going above and
beyond to show how much she truly loves each and every one of us, no matter our differences. A true angel. I very much look forward to the release of the music video for this song, which comes out on June 17th. Obviously will be talking about that in another
article when it comes out. But, for now I will just be streaming this song on Amazong Music on repeat and watching the lyric video on YouTube about a million times! Then, watch the music video a million times once that comes out. It’s just what we do as Swifties...right? ;) ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 24 JULY 2019

YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN Your Guide to the References in Taylor Swift’s ‘You Need to Calm Down’ Music Video eyes. Swift’s sleep mask in her music video is lavender silk, and is embroidered with the script “Calm down,” in a possible reference to Hepburn’s style.

As promised, Taylor Swift released her music video for her new song “You Need to Calm Down” off of her upcoming seventh album Lover on Monday morning, premiering on Good Morning America. Also as promised, the literally sugar-sweet video (plenty of cake) is filled with celebrity cameos from the likes of Katy Perry, Laverne Cox, RuPaul, Ryan Reynolds and the guys of Queer Eye, all of whom are having a blast in a rainbow-hued, idyllic trailer park. The song takes an equality-first stance, criticizing haters and homophobes alike, and ends with a call to followers to support her Senate petition in favor of the Equality Act, tied in with this month’s celebrations of Pride Month. Here are the many Taylor Swift easter eggs — both within the Swift universe and to pop and celebrity culture more broadly — that the video, co-directed by Drew Kirsch and Swift herself, contains.
A Cher Quote
At the beginning of the video, Swift is at home in a trailer decorated lavishly in bubblegum style. There’s a quick cut to a poster with powerful meaning, though: it’s actually a framed Cher quote, from a 1996 interview with the star who rejected certain societal norms and viewed men as a luxury like “dessert.” In the interview, Cher reflects on her mother’s desire for her to settle down and marry a “rich man.” Cher’s reponse? “I said, ‘Mom, I am a rich man.”

it emblazoned on the back of a glittery phone case (which promptly catches fire, soon after she tosses it down).
A giant butterfly A watch with a cat face back tattoo
Pretty much everyone knows Swift is a cat lover. She even recently picked up a new kitten, who made his debut to fans in her music video for “ME!” So Swift’s nod to her feline fixation in this video is revealed on her watch, where the face has an illustration of a cat. It also shows 13 o’clock as an option to reference her lucky number.
Just before she shrugs on a hot pink fur jacket, we get a quick peek of Swift’s back, which is almost completely covered in a giant tattoo. The ink depicts a snake in the middle of her back, which expands up into a cloud of butterflies that reach to her shoulders. The tattoo is an ink version of a similar visual from her “ME!” music video, showing her metamorphosis from the Reputation-era snake theme into the Lover era, filled with rainbows and butterflies.
A Lover phone case Last week, Swift announced that the title of her upcoming A pool float shot album — it’s due out Aug. 23 Swift also spends some time in — is Lover. She snuck in a nod to the title in the “You Need to the video lounging in a pool float in Calm Down” video by having the middle of a perfectly circular and WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

But the pool float also brings to mind Swift’s own history with floaties: in past years, she was known for hosting lavish summer parties with extravagant floats and slides and a raft of celebrity attendees.
Cameos from Laverne Cox, Hannah Hart and more activists The next segment of the “You Need to Calm Down” video features stars like Laverne Cox, known for her activism for transgender rights, and Hannah Hart, a YouTube comedian known for her series “My Drunk Kitchen,” who are each hanging out in their respective front lawns and get moments to shine.
for Hayley Kiyoko to appear, wielding a bow and arrow — a missile of a more medieval variety. Kiyoko is herself a pop star with hits like “Curious” and “Girls Like Girls,” known as an LGBTQ+ rights advocate and beloved by fans for improving lesbian representation in pop. In the video, Kiyoko hits a bull’s eye A Ciara-officiated with her arrow in the center of a wedding target stamped with the number Jesse Tyler Ferguson (of 5, a hint that some are taking to Modern Family fame) and his mean she might feature on the husband Justin Mikita get a fifth track of Lover. chance to re-enact their wedding kiss in the video — officiated by Ciara. (Swift further showed up for Ferguson over the past weekend, joining him at the Stonewall Inn in New York City to play a song live.)
A protest march
Throughout the song, Swift admonishes those who tear others down. “Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD?” she asks, referencing the LGBT representation advocacy group. Anti-LGBTQ+ protesters appear sporadically throughout video, carrying signs like “Homosexuality is sin” and easily distinguishable from Swift’s friends with their lessthan-colorful attire. This spring, Hayley Kiyoko’s Swift has taken a stand as an LGBTQ+ ally, sharing a petition fierce archery When Swift sings, “But on change.org for political you’re coming at my friends support for the Equality Act and like a missile,” that’s the cue writing a letter to her senator. Adam Rippon serving ice
Olympic figure skating star Adam Rippon is also spotted serving — what else? — the icebased treat of Sno-Cones, most likely in a wink to his prowess on the ice.
A sip of tea with Tan France
Tan France is the fashion guru on the Queer Eye reality show, and in “You Need to Calm Down,” he gets his solo moment with a pot of tea — which he gracefully pours down his throat. Not only is France a British citizen, making his tea cameo particularly apt, but as we know, “tea” in pop culture slang is also a reference to hot gossip, about which France appears fully unbothered. Swift then extends the tea metaphor,
A tattoo for Ellen DeGeneres
Show host and star Ellen DeGeneres is next spotted inside one of the trailers, getting a tattoo on her arm from Adam Lambert that reads “Cruel Summer.” This one is a bit of a mystery; “Cruel Summer” could be referring to the 1983 pop single by the British girl group Bananarama, but that’s a pretty continued on pg 10

Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds has long been in Swift’s universe; he’s married to Blake Lively, one of her squad members of years past, and has popped up at those summer bashes she used to throw. Here, he makes a cameo as a painter, focusing intently on painting a canvas based on a photograph of the historic Stonewall Inn, the site of the 1969 police raid that is considered to have kicked off the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.
The Equality Act petition
This spring, Swift has been putting forward a Senate petition for the Equality Act via change.org, asking supporters and politicians to support her campaign. She throws in an ending card shout-out to the Equality Act here as well. “Let’s show our pride by demanding that, on a national level, our laws truly treat all of our citizens equally,” it reads.

But instead of giving the pageant crown to just one of the contestants, RuPaul appears onstage and then tosses it up in the air. It seems like all the pop queens are meant to share the crown, á la Mean Girls, perhaps.

STONEWALL Taylor Swift Dropped By Stonewall for a Surprise Pride Performance VANITY FAIR
KEVIN FITZPATRICK
06.15.19
Whomever Taylor Swift is telling to calm down by the release of her new single, it sure wasn’t the assembled Friday crowd at New York’s Stonewall Inn. The Lover artist and Grammy-winner made a surprise appearance at the landmark LGBTQ+ bar, performing a familiar hit as part of her Pride Month checklist. In order to help commemorate 50 years since the 1969 Stonewall Riots, Swift offered a surprise performance to the crowd after an introduction from Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson. “I’m so happy I don’t have to keep this secret any longer,” Ferguson tweeted after hanging around onstage to help perform Swift’s “Shake It Off.” “Look who came to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall at the Stonewall Inn. @taylorswift13, you are a gem. Thank you for everything you do for the LGBTQ community. We heart you!” “I heard that this is Jesse’s favorite song to do at karaoke,” Taylor said of her “Shake It Off” performance. “So if there’s anything you feel like you want to jump in on, if there’s like, your part that you’re really good at, then, just sing, dance, just be yourself. This is a really safe space.” Also helping host the event was Diva Jackie Dupree, while the performance roster included Sara Bareilles, Gavin WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN
Creel, Lea DeLaria, VINCINT and more. Swift herself has been making headlines both professional and Pride-related—most recently this week’s release of “You Need to Calm Down,” which
itself will become the first video off August 23 album Lover next week. The track includes lyrics like “Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD,” “Sunshine on the street at the parade, but you would rather
be in the dark ages,” and even “shade never made anybody less gay.” Swift also opened the month urging fans to support Tennessee’s LGBTQ Equality Act, and has been helping boost GLAAD donations all month. ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 24 JULY 2019

#WESTANDWITHTAYLOR Speaking Up About Scott & Scooter left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make. For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums. Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years. Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it. This is my worst case scenario. ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 24 JULY 2019

This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it. When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine
the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. It truly saddens me, sickens me and enrages me that this whole situation is even taking place. I felt that Scott was like a second father to Taylor. He always seemed to be on her side and be there for her, but now that she branched out and away from his label, he stabs her right in the back. SHE is the reason for YOUR success, Scott. Definitely NOT the other way around. She deserves to own her art. The entertainment industry is absolutely disgusting. These men think they can get away with this, but soon enough, the joke will be on them when all the major artists stick together to take them down. Taylor, your fans are here for you and will forever stand by you. You deserve nothing but happiness and to be the owner of your work. “Taylor Swift is a huge reason why I always insisted to write my own music. I believed if she did it (in a way that made my teeth ache like cold water and my heart swell and my eyes leak) than I should too. Cause that’s how to make someone feel. To drag it from the pits of your heart. To offer it on a platter and say ‘’take some but take kindly’’. She deserves to own the painstaking labor of her heart. She has surpassed all expectations of what any artist is even capable of. She catapulted her stardom into the Milky Way. And it turns my guts that no matter how much power or success a woman has in this life, you are still susceptible to someone coming along and making you feel powerless out of spite. #WESTANDWITHTAYLOR Open Letter to Scott Braun A_BELGIAN_SWIFTIE 07.05.19
To Scott S. Braun, I recently heard about your acquisition of Big Machine Records. Like we all know this music records label was once the home of major superstar Taylor A. Swift. There has been a lot of backlash around your buy of this label thanks to a post that Taylor Swift posted on the social media site Tumblr. I read both this post as the article “So, It’s Time For Some Truth…” on the Big Machine Records website. Although this article wasn’t written by you but by Scott Borchetta, this the only ‘official’ reaction from your party. In this article you state, I quote: “Taylor had every chance in the world to own not just her master recordings, but every video, photograph, everything associated to her career. She chose to leave.” Like we learn from her Tumblr post we see that you offered her to ‘earn’ back her masters, album per album. I don’t know whose side is telling the truth, but one thing is sure: she wasn’t allowed to leave BMR if she wanted her masters back. This sir, I call blackmail. You forced Taylor into choosing between her past and her future, and like every person who would find himself in this situation Taylor chose for her future. I find it sad that she needed to let go of her past work to make sure she would be free in the future. The truth is that an artist should be allowed ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 24 JULY 2019
to get the rights of his/her work and I mean every right not only the copyright but also things like his/her master recordings. An artist needs to own his/her own work and doesn’t need to ask permission to do things or to use their music. Imagine if it was your music, in which you had poured your heart and soul, your heartbreak and love, your friendships and your enemies, basically it was a part of yourself. Imagine if you didn’t own the rights to the song you had written to get over things or remember the memories which you thought were worth remembering. Your wife Yael also posted on Instagram about this matter. She
said in her post that Taylor was just throwing a temper tantrum because she didn’t get her way. Sorry I find this the most unrespectful thing to say about a women and especially coming from another women. For years women were told to be throwing temper tantrums when they were standing up for themselves and I thought that in 2019 women would have respect for each other or at least could talk respectfully to each other. Going back to the article on the BMR website. In the article you state: “But there were also times where Taylor knew that I was close to Scooter and that Scooter was a very good source of information for upcoming album releases, tours,
etc, and I’d reach out to him for information on our behalf. Scooter was never anything but positive about Taylor. He called me directly about Manchester to see if Taylor would participate (she declined). He called me directly to see if Taylor wanted to participate in the Parkland March (she declined).” It’s just plain disgusting to use things like the terrorist attacks on Manchester and Parkland to make sure someone will do what you want. I hope that you will see that some things you have done aren’t right and I hope you will try your best to make things right. Sincerely, Sam WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

#WESTANDWITHTAYLOR What Scooter Owning Taylor’s Masters Means: FUCKSWIFT13 07.06.19
Everyone seems to have strong opinions about Scooter Braun owning the Master Rights to Taylor’s music catalogue, but it seems like no one really knows what the fuck that even means. (I certainly didn’t). Which is 100% understandable because it’s a VERY complicated system that even most musicians don’t understand. So I dug in and spent a couple hours (a lot of hours) reading about music and copyright law. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the situation isn’t as bad as I previously thought. Sure, it sucks that Scooter is getting wealthier off of the music of a women whose career he tried to ruin. Especially when you remember that reputation is a part of that catalog, meaning one of the villain’s Taylor sings about throughout reputation now earns money off of it. Gross, right? Disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer or expert in music or copyright law in any way. This is also informative based on normal music law and general contracting. I do not know the finer details of Taylor’s contract with BMLG. 1. Let’s begin with the biggest concern: the Master Rights Owner of a song has a say in the use of that song. 2. Should anyone want to use one of Taylor’s songs in a movie or series or advert, they would first need the permission WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN
of the Master Rights Owner, aka Scooter, and they would have to pay him a licensing fee of his choosing. However...they would ALSO require the permission of the Copyright Owner (who is Taylor) and pay her a licensing fee of her choosing. 3. Taylor still earns the exact same royalties from her past work as she did before. Remember, she has never owned her masters. 4. The most important thing you need to understand is that every song has TWO copyrights. The “Master Rights” and the
“copyright” that any author has over their work (intellectual property). There are two completely separate copyrights. 5. The owner of a song’s copyright is the songwriter, they are the SONG OWNER. The owner of the Master of that song owns the ORIGINAL RECORDING from which all copies are made. 6. Taylor is the copyright owner of all her work since she wrote it. She shares royalties of her work with her co-writers and publishers. As a copyright owner, Taylor has 5 exclusive rights: - To reproduce the work
- To distribute the work - To perform the work - To allow derivatives of the work to be made (eg. covers or remixes) *Taylor will earn royalties for all of the above* 7. Master Recording Owners DO NOT receive royalties on any kind of public performance. That includes everything from radio play at the mall to stadium tours. Only Taylor and her co-writers will receive revenue from public play. 8. Master Rights Owners earn their royalties from sales, digital sales included. Streaming is a gray era, Master Rights Owners earn from streams, but so do the Copyright Owners and the artists. Summary: Scooter’s Master Rights Taylor earns a LOT more off of her music than anyone who owns her masters. The debate here is mostly about creative control. Taylor wanted to be fully and completely in charge of her art. Which any artist should be. Scooter could potentially deny projects like movies, series or ads that Taylor would want her music to be in. The BIGGEST concern is that Scooter potentially has the ability to allow other artists to sample her older recordings with her permission, maybe in ways defamatory to her/her career.
