FROM THE

Holy big magazine this month, Batman! This is the BIGGEST magazine to date for ZINEthirteen. What is crazy is, there could have been EVEN MORE pages added, but I am only one person that can do so much. Sorry folks! I did try to include all the most important items that have been happening, along with the various interviews that Taylor has been a part of. I am definitely NOT used to all these interviews! Especially coming from last era, we had nothing! Now, I am struggling just to keep up with what radio interview Taylor has been on! Haha, but this is not at all a complaint! I am so happy to see Taylor is giving clues here and there with her interviews as to what we can expect in the coming months for the new era. WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

So, this issue, as I mentioned, is quite large. It may be a record size, but we will see how large it remains as time goes on! Once again, I appologize for not including every single detail of what has happened since last month. But, I hope you guys will be happy with the outcome. First, there is new music with ME! the music video, the lyric handwritten video, BBMA peformance and MORE! WHAAAAT! I am absolutely IN LOVE with the new song. I literally have it play on repeat on my 40 minute drive to work. Oh, and on the way back of course! Streaming ME! has been a daily thing for me, obviously. :P Taylor also performed at the TIME 100 Gala. Videos surfaced all over the internet of her performance and WOW was that amazing. Her vocals

are just so, so, SO good. I can’t believe we are lucky enough to live at the same time as Taylor. I am forever grateful to be experiencing her music first hand. Taylor will be someone who is looked back on as a major music icon and we are all lucky enough to be here for all of it. Just gets me all emotional thinking about it. Anyway! With the new era upon us, that means there is NEW MERCH! That’s right! There is a bunch of new merch on the site for the new single of ME! I ordered a few things, but I am holding back my temptation to order more since I know there will be more items released as the era continues. I hate that I have to resist this much, but I am doing ok so far! It just sucks seeing everything in

their cute merch, it makes me want to buy it all! I still have not received my merch yet, but am SO excited for it! I’ll be sure to share on social media when it comes. :) Anyway, this is a big issue with LOTS of reading. Hope you guys enjoy!

Stay Beautiful, Tanya

TIME Taylor Swift, Electrifying Artist TIME

SHAWN MENDES

04.17.19

I’ve been a Taylor Swift fan for as long as I can remember. But it wasn’t until I met and got to know her that I understood how wonderful a person she truly is. Taylor makes the job of creating music for millions of people look easy. It all comes from her—her belief in magic and love, and her ability to be as honest and raw as possible. She’s the master of putting the perfect amount of thought into not overthinking, and that’s why her music connects so well. I was so lucky to be able to open for a handful of her stadium shows on the 1989 World Tour. And I quickly learned that the magic of Taylor Swift doesn’t come from the lights, dancers or fireworks (although all of that is incredible) but from the electrifying connection that she has with the people who are there to see her. There’s an overwhelming feeling in the air. The feeling of your heart racing in your chest with excitement—so much so that by the time you get to “Love Story,” all you want to do is pick up your phone and text every person you know to say how much you love them. The feeling is so thick, you feel like you could reach out and grab it to keep forever. Taylor makes anyone older feel young again and anyone young feel they can do anything. It’s so rare and so special. If there is one thing I want to achieve in my career and life, it’s that. ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

TIME It’s a TIME 100 Gala, Baby Just Say, Yes ZINETHIRTEEN

04.24.19

Taylor made her appearance on the TIME 100 Gala red carpet in a beautiful pale pink and yellow gown by J. Mendel. When seeing her in this gown, I instantly flashed back to the Love Story music video. The way the gown flows and how her hair was styled with a cute headband, really took me back to the fantasy/ magical/romantic style Taylor once wore, but now, in a more mature manner. There was plenty of influential people in the crowd that night, that got to witness Taylor’s performance. One that I would like to mention is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who was caught singing to Taylor as she was performing! I loved seeing that in a video someone had posted. So great! Taylor performed an acoustic set including some of her most popular songs: Style, Delicate, Love Story, New Year’s Day and Shake It Off. How badly I would have LOVED to be there to hear these live, but luckily, someone had a livestream going as well as other videos posted of her performance. Her vocals were ON POINT and just so beautiful! SO excited to see what else this era brings us!

TIME Taylor Swift Shares Her Three Biggest Influences Right Now TIME

RAISA BRUNER

04.24.19

Taylor Swift may be one of TIME’s 100 most influential people in the world — but the singer-songwriter herself also has plenty to say about what influences her. In an exclusive video for TIME, Swift explained three things that shape the way she thinks, from a social network that she adores to the iconic rock star she admires and the animals who bring her joy. First up in her influences: the social media platform Tumblr. “I go on Tumblr and it’s like a window into what my fans are going through,” Swift says. “They post about what they think is cool, what they think is unjust or problematic.” Swift has long been known by her followers to hang around on Tumblr; eagle-eyed fans notice everything she likes on the platform and interpret her activity as hints about her work. But this pronouncement confirms it. Next is a rock star who is also a role model to her. “I look at Paul McCartney and I see how he’s had just this amazing career—he’s created unparalleled art,” Swift says of the former Beatle, who just released his latest album, Egypt Station, last year at age 76. “He’s always been known to be kind to people, respectful and also really selfless as a performer.” ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

1. Fans

2. Paul McCartney

3. Cats

Finally, anyone who’s followed Swift more than casually will know that she’s a feline fanatic. “I have cats. I’m obsessed with them. I love my cats so much that when a role came up in a movie called Cats, I just thought, like, I

gotta do this,” she says of her decision to join the cast of the upcoming live-action film adaptation of the classic play. “Like, this is my calling in life to do this—for the ladies.” (On set, there was even a “cats school” to help actors get

in animal character.) As for what she appreciates about cats? “They’re very dignified. They’re independent. They’re very capable of dealing with their own life.” Sounds like the kind of influence we can all look up to. WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

NASHVILLE MURAL Taylor Swift Makes Appearance at Gulch Mural WKRN

BRITTNEY BAIRD

04.25.19

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) Taylor Swift made an appearance Thursday morning at a new mural in The Gulch, long rumored to be linked to the superstar’s upcoming album. Crowds gathered early in the morning as the artist behind the latest mural in the Gulch arrived to make some last-minute touch ups. The mural, which is of large butterfly wings, was rumored to be linked to an announcement at midnight by superstar Taylor Swift. Artist Kelsey Montague told News 2 she wanted to freshen up the paint of the mural for the first day of the NFL Draft in Nashville. Montague stenciled the letters ME! onto the mural as News 2 cameras were rolling. Swift appeared around 11:30 a.m. and posed for a photo in the center of the mural’s butterfly wings. She stopped and spoke with fans, taking selfies along the way. She said on her Instagram account she commissioned the mural and put clues about her latest song inside the butterfly’s wings.

ME! The April Twenty-Six Countdown: ME! Music Video Release ZINETHIRTEEN

TANYA OHNMEISS

04.26.19

We all were ever so curious about this countdown Taylor had released without any warning. What did it mean? New single? New album? What is this? Well, now we all know the mysterious posts have lead up to the first single off of Taylor’s 7th studio album, which we do not have a name for yet. But, the lead single is ME! featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco. All of Taylor’s Instagram posts were actually items featured in the ME! music video. Tricky little trickster. Many fans had theorized that this may be the case, but is has been solidified now that the countdown is over and the new music is out! So, I’m sure by now you have all seen the magical video that is ME! But, my first reaction was just pure joy. This song is SO MUCH FUN. It’s definitely a great bop for the summertime, which I’m sure is why Taylor thought to release the single earlier than her usual release time. The intro shows a snake bursting into butterflies which symbolizes the transition from her reputation era to this new TS7 era, which is filled with bright colors. Taylor’s cats are even included in this video! Which got me all kinds of excited. I love the fact that ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

Taylor and Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco posing in outfits from the ME! music video

there is humor mixed it this video to make it even more light and fun. Taylor and Brendon looked like they had an absolute blast filming for this video! The collaboration is fantastic, especially since I have been such a big Panic! fan since I was in middle school. So, it’s lke my childhood just came

back with a huge explosion of awesomeness. “You can’t spell awesome without me!” If this is the lead single, I can only imagine that this album will be filled with lots of exciting bops about love and happiness. Taylor seems to be in a really happy place right now in her life, so it only makes sense to have an album

that is reflective of that. Do we think she might throw in a few more emotional songs? Maybe! Everything is still so new. But, all I know is that I am VERY MUCH excited about this new era. As much as I loved reputation, I look forward to what the new music will bring to our lives. :) WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

BILLBOARD AWARDS Taylor and Brendon Urie Open Up the Billboards with a Blast of Fun! ZINETHIRTEEN

TANYA OHNMEISS

05.02.19

If you haven’t gotten the chance to see Taylor’s Billboard performance yet, drop what you are doing and head to YouTube and watch it! It is definitely something you can’t miss! What a start to a show...WOW! Everything was so perfectly planned and mimicked a lot of the music video. I could only wish to have seen that live! I bet it was absolutely stunning to see it in person! Especially all the dancers and aerialists on the umbrellas. Like, WHAAT?! INCREDIBLE! For the entire performance, I seriously could not stop smiling! She was just emmitting this joyous glow that was contagious to anyone watching. Her fringe, glitter outfit was on point and so much fun. She looked like a figure skater which was AWESOME. And Brendon was such a great performer along side Taylor! They were both so cute dancing with one another. You can tell they have wonderful chemistry.

ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

Taylor and Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco soaring over the Billboard crowd

Everything was so PERFECT! Another great thing about Taylor making an appearance at awards shows is that she is constantly on the camera dancing when other artists are performing! I love how supportive Taylor is of other artists. She is constantly rooting for others and is so happy doing it too!

Taylor also took the time to meet fans at the awards, like the sweet angel that she is. Many selfies started to surface throughout the night with Taylor making cute faces with fans, some even lucky enough to get more than one photo! She always makes time for us, which is one of the many things I love about her. :)

I am excited to see what else is to come during this new era! Taylor has done SO MUCH promo for just one song...what else does she have in store for us? We still don’t even know the album name at this point! Looks like we just have to wait and see, but the anticipation KILLS ME!

ENTERTAINMENT WKLY New Reputation: Taylor Swift Shares Intel on TS7, Fan Theories, and Her Next Era ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

ALEX SUSKIND

05.10.19

THE PALM TREES ARRIVED IN FEBRUARY, seven in all, set against a pastel blue backdrop with superimposed stars. It appeared that a new Taylor Swift era was upon us — that the old happy-go-lucky Taylor was not, in fact, dead. Or did it? It was only an Instagram photo, just one more picture in an infinite content scroll. But it also came from a pop star known for prodigious hint-dropping, whose fans turn every piece of info into an online archaeological dig. As expected, the summery post sent Swifties sifting through each detail with a fine-tooth comb. What did the trees symbolize? An overdue vacation? A recently purchased beach house? A secret palm-frond collection? Or maybe, as many surmised, it was new music. One Twitter user predicted that the number of stars in the background of the photo hinted at a single drop: “There’s about 60/61 [stars]️. There’s 61 days until April 26, FRIDAY, a SINGLE RELEASE day!” Another said it was the unofficial announcement of her next LP: “Okay so in this picture there are 4 palm trees on the left (4 country albums). There are two palm trees on the right (2 pop albums). There is one large palm tree in the middle. This represents her new album.” These may sound like ludicrous conspiracy theories — for the ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

record, they were mostly correct — but they fit firmly within the Taylor Swift Musical Universe (it’s like the Marvel Cinematic Universe but with more guitars and fewer Stan Lee cameos). “I posted that the day that I finished the seventh album,” says Swift about the photo. “I couldn’t expect [my fans] to know that. I figured they’d figure it out later, but a lot of their theories were actually correct. Those Easter eggs were just trying to establish that tone, which I foreshadowed ages ago in a Spotify vertical video for ‘Delicate’ by painting my nails those [pastel] colors.”

It’s now April, and the 29-yearold pop star is in a Los Angeles photo studio, giving her first sitdown magazine interview in three years. She wants to discuss the art of placing hints inside her work, as well as the upcoming record, which she recorded as soon as she finished the Reputation Tour. She’s also keen on detailing her own obsessions, talking up the TV shows, books, and songs that help shape her outlook on life. Over the past 13 years, Swift has perfected the pop culture feedback loop: She shares updates about her life and drops hints about new music, which

fans then gobble up and repromote with their own theories, which Swift then re-shares on her Tumblr or incorporates into future clues. It’s like a T-Swiftbuilt Escher staircase of personal memories and moments that tease what’s next. “I’ve trained them to be that way,” she says of her fans’ astute detective work. Swift is a pop culture fanatic herself (see: the jean jacket she’s wearing on the EW cover) and has an innate understanding of the lengths her audience will go to be a part of the original creation. “I love that they like the cryptic hint-dropping. Because as long WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

19

ENTERTAINMENT WKLY as they like it, I’ll keep doing it. It’s fun. It feels mischievous and playful.” Through this approach, Swift has designed the ultimate artistic scavenger hunt — and it’s easy to get swept up in its drama, even if you don’t listen to her music. Her moments aren’t always hidden, either. Sometimes Swift highlights aspects of her world just so fans feel like they’re on the journey with her. Like the time in March 2018 when pop singer Hayley Kiyoko was accused of shading Swift after mentioning her name during an interview. On Tumblr, Swift re-shared a fan’s post, adding commentary that defended Kiyoko, which immediately

dispelled any conflicts between the two artists; Swift’s post subsequently received more than 29,000 notes. Four months later, she invited Kiyoko on stage during the Reputation Tour to sing her hit “Curious.” Kiyoko returned the favor when she had Swift join her that December at a benefit on behalf of the LGBTQ organization the Ally Coalition to perform “Delicate.” Fans of both artists were elated by the mutual support. The feedback loop also extends outside of music. In October 2018, Swift broke her silence about politics by publicly endorsing two candidates for office in her adopted state of Tennessee, while

encouraging her followers to register to vote. She kept up the civic momentum through Election Day when she asked fans to post selfies after voting; Swift then eagerly re-promoted her favorites on Instagram stories. This practice of sharing and resharing and sharing again is why listeners consider Swift one of the world’s most accessible pop stars, someone willing to not only interact with her audience but invite them to secret listening sessions, or make the occasional surprise visit to their wedding or prom. It’s a symbiotic relationship, one that, as Swift tells EW, helped her dig out of the darker era of reputation. “It’s definitely the fans that made

that tonal shift in the way I was feeling,” she says. “Songwriters need to communicate, and part of communicating correctly is when you put out a message that is understood the way you meant it. reputation was interesting because I’d never before had an album that wasn’t fully understood until it was seen live. When it first came out everyone thought it was just going to be angry; upon listening to the whole thing they realized it’s actually about love and friendship, and finding out what your priorities are.” Then, during the Reputation Tour, she had an epiphany: that despite the caricature that she continued on pg 20

ENTERTAINMENT WKLY New Reputation cont. continued from pg 19

thought had been created of her, there were many people who saw what others had simply refused to. “I would look out into the audience and I’d see these amazing, thoughtful, caring, wonderful, empathetic people,” she says. “So often with our takedown culture, talking s— about a celebrity is basically the same as talking s— about the new iPhone. So when I go and I meet fans, I see that they actually see me as a flesh-and-blood human being. That — as contrived as it may sound — changed [me] completely, assigning humanity to my life.” At tour’s end, she channeled that positive energy into the studio, recording the new album in just under three months. But the fast pace won’t mean a short LP. Swift confirmed that her seventh record (she hasn’t announced a title yet; the working nickname among fans is TS7) will include more songs than any of her previous releases. “I try not to go into making an album with any expectation,” she says. “I started to write so much that I knew immediately it would probably be bigger.” The project will also feature a mix of old and new collaborators (on the candy-coated lead single “ME!” Swift brought in Panic! At the Disco frontman Brendon Urie and coproducer Joel Little, both of whom she had never worked with), but she is unsurprisingly coy about doling out much more information, as if doing so would break the carefully honed ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

T-Swiftian feedback loop. “There’s a lot of a lot on this album,” she says. “I’m trying to convey an emotional spectrum. I definitely don’t wanna have too much of one thing…. You get some joyful songs and you get the bops, as they say.” There’s also, she adds, some “really, really, really, really sad songs,” but “not enough to where you need to worry about me.” She gives us one more clue: The true distinction between TS7 and reputation is in the delivery. “This time around I feel more comfortable being brave enough

to be vulnerable, because my fans are brave enough to be vulnerable with me. Once people delve into the album, it’ll become pretty clear that that’s more of the fingerprint of this — that it’s much more of a singer-songwriter, personal journey than the last one.” The past month has seen a deluge of Swift activity, from the release of the new single to dropping more hints in interviews about the record and its title, which is apparently hidden somewhere inside the “ME!” music video (current fan guesses include Kaleidoscope and Daisy).

But if the Easter eggs from the pop star seem like a business-asusual routine, she says this album does indeed mark a new era of her life, where she’s been better able to prioritize what’s important to her. “Our priorities can get messed up existing in a society that puts a currency on curating the way people see your life,” she says. “Social media has given people a way to express their art. I use it to connect with fans. But on the downside you feel like there are 3 trillion new invisible hoops that you have to jump through, and you feel like you’ll never be able to jump through them all correctly. I — along with a lot of my friends and fans — am trying to figure out how to navigate living my life and not just curating what I want people to think living my life is. I’m not always able to maintain a balance, and I think that’s important for everyone to know about. We’re always learning, and that’s something that I also had to learn — that I’ve got to be brave enough to learn. Learning in public is so humiliating sometimes…. Do I feel more balanced in my life than I ever have before? Um, probably yeah. But is that permanent? No. And I think being okay with that has put me in a bit of a better position.” Strong words to live by, to quote, to re-share, to tweet back to her, and see if she’ll respond. ENTERTAINMENT WKLY Taylor Swift Easter Egg Cheat Sheet: All the Buttons in EW’s Cover Shoot, Explained 7. Troye Sivan

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

SEIJA RANKIN

05.10.19

At Entertainment Weekly we fancy ourselves to be full-fledged Easter egg enthusiasts. Whether we’re slipping the pink teddy bear into our Breaking Bad reunion or Dean’s amulet into the Supernatural cover shoot, we’ve honed our skills pretty well over the years, if we do say so ourselves. But the one Easter egg expert that we’ll never live up to is Taylor Swift. So when it came time to plan for the photo shoot with our current cover girl, we knew it was imperative we step up our hintdropping game. EW’s expert photo editors adorned Swift’s jean jacket with over a dozen buttons, each one symbolizing a major milestone in her pop culture canon — and our very own interview with the singer. Swifties have been dedicating themselves to uncovering every last button-Easter-egg since the cover dropped, so now we’re letting you in on the official motivation for each one — except for a few specific buttons that Taylor herself picked out and plans to keep the special meaning all to herself. (That’s right, we can’t even spill on those Easter eggs; but give your best guesses, Swifties, and maybe she’ll treat us all to a big reveal).

Swift is a big admirer of the Australian pop star, bringing him out to sing “My My My!” on the Reputation Tour.

8. Grey’s Anatomy

Swift’s go-to Grey’s Anatomy quote: “So do it. Decide. Is this the life you want to live? Is this the person you want to love? Is this the best you can be?”

9. Track 5

A nod to the Swifties’ fan theory that the most emotional song on each of her albums is placed at track 5 (“Cold As You,” “White Horse,” “Dear John,” “All Too Well,” “All You Had to Do Was Stay,” and “Delicate”).

10. Drake

The pop star calls Drake one of her favorite lyricists. “I love his 2. The Dixie Chicks 5. Friends one-liners,” she told EW. “Like Friends is a major staple in ‘You say I led you on/But you Swift is a huge fan of the trio: “They make interesting music in Swift’s world. Her favorite quote followed me.’ Or ‘This a Rollie, not an unapologetically feminine way.” from the show? “‘Pivot!’ I take it a stopwatch/It don’t ever stop.’” as career advice.”

3. CATS

Swift is playing Bombalurina in the big-screen adaptation, and spoke about her role in the movie, for the first time ever, to EW. Spoiler alert: She went to “cat school” (really). See what else she spilled about the highlyanticipated flick here.

6. Cats

Not to be confused with the musical, Swift is mom to three cats: Olivia Benson, Meredith Grey, and Benjamin Button. She also tries to work her love for felines into as many songs and music videos as humanly possible — as she explained to EW in her 4. Calm 1. Selena Gomez hint-dropping tell-all. 11. Faith Hill

One of Swift’s favorite singers — and, of course, noted wife of one Tim McGraw.

12. Mister Rogers

Swift watched Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood every day after school and also spilled to EW that the documentary about the children’s show (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?) was the last movie she watched that made a major impact on the singer. WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

ENTERTAINMENT WKLY Easter Eggs cont. 13. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

Swift is a major Law & Order buff — see Olivia Benson the cat, Mariska Hargitay’s cameo in the “Bad Blood” music video and on the 1989 tour, and countless other references. The two-tone chime is also one of her favorite sounds.

14. Pastel colors

The color palette, which she began using on Instagram in February, represents a brandnew era — foreshadowed by her manicure in the Spotify vertical video for “Delicate.”

15. Game of Thrones

Breaking news: The HBO show (and Arya’s kill list) actually provided the inspiration for Reputation. Oh, and if Swift had her own dragon she would totally name it Villanelle, after the Killing Eve mastermind.

16. Awesome

A nod to the line she sings in “ME!”: “You can’t spell awesome without me.”

RADIO INTERVIEWS Taylor’s Interview with Carrie & Tommy on Hit Network of Australia LOVETHEPLAYERS 04.29.19

Carrie: It’s time to welcome Taylor Swift. Taylor: Thanks for talking to me. Carrie: No worries. Well congratulations on the new single. Almost 100 million views on YouTube. You’ve broken records on Vevo, Amazon. Are you absolutely buzzing at the moment? Taylor: Um, yeah. It’s crazy. This is insane. The fans have been so, so, so amazing for them to do that. Because you know obviously you put something out, you put all this work into it, you really try to make it something that they’ll like and something that will entertain them, and the fact that they would watch it as many times as they have—It’s really— I’m so grateful, honestly. I love getting to do this so it’s really amazing that they make it so much fun to do this. Carrie: Well they’re loving all the clues that you’ve put in the song. Is it clues of the new album, the date of the new album release. They’re also still going crazy about a pic that you posted in February of you behind a fence with five holes. Can you tell us, is that a clue or is that just a really cool pic of you behind a fence? Taylor: Oh, my gosh. So that picture, I really just was trying to change up my Instagram aesthetic to get ready ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

for the new album. I was just, like, posting pastel pictures to try to go from a dark to a light and kind of show them what the color scheme would be for the next album, but I love that they’re that passionate. They will talk about that, like, in the “fandom”—that will be something they talk about for the next couple of years. They’re so funny online of it. But yeah, I should’ve thought about that. Carrie: You were just being arty. Taylor: I love that you know about that. I can’t believe you know about the five holes in the fence. Tommy: Taylor, I thought that we could put all the talk of clues and albums up to rest and you could just potentially tell us when the album is coming out and what it’s going to be called. Taylor: You know, that

is such a good idea. That would make it so much easier, wouldn’t it? Tommy: And it would be a real scoop for us. Taylor: I don’t think I’m gonna. I’m sorry. Carrie: All the billboards you put up teasing to it, one of them almost made me have a car accident because I was coming own a ramp at the freeway and I turned around to look at your billboard and nearly sideswiped my car. Taylor: No, never look at my billboard. Look at the road. Hands on the wheel, seat belt on. Be safe, kids. Tommy: Stop making such intriguing billboards. It’s your fault, Taylor. Taylor: Everything’s my fault. Let’s be honest. Tommy: Hey, congratulations

not only on the song, it’s incredible. The film clip is also incredible and it features your new gorgeous cat Benjamin Button. I know that makes it three cats for you now. How many cats do you think before you become a crazy cat lady? Taylor: As many as it takes. As many as it takes. Tommy: So that is the end goal we’re going for? Taylor: I didn’t expect to meet this kitten. I met him on the video set actually, ‘cause we had a scene where I wanted there to be this scene where symbolically, like, I wanted it to be kind of the symbolism of, like, if you’re into someone, don’t just do what you think people like. Don’t do just what you’ve heard. Don’t give a girl what you just think she would like ‘cause you think girls like these things, like, get to know somebody and that will be more interesting if you actually know someone for who they are and what they actually think is cool. So we had this scene where he gives me flowers to try and win me back I say no, he gives me a ring to try to win me back, I say no. And so then he pulls a tiny kitten out of his jacket and I’m like, ‘Okay! You clearly know me.’ So I show up on set and there’s this tiny little kitten, that was the sweetest kitten. I fell immediately in love with this cat ‘cause he just started purring and immediately we were best friends and it was just set. And WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

Tommy: Single men all over Australia have just gone out to get kittens to give away to women. Carrie: I wanna talk to you about some of the lyrics in the song because it is an absolute banger. It is caught in my head. We’re gonna play the tune now. I love the lines in the song, and I love the line, “I know I’m a psycho on the phone,” because it just reminded me of the fact that us girls, we’ve all had moments of going absolutely cray cray for a man when when

we’ve been in love. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done when you’ve been besotted with somebody? The most psycho thing you’ve done? Taylor: Well, guys have had that moment too on the phone. This is not just a girl thing. I think that with this song we really just wanted to have this song not really be fully taking itself seriously. So the lyrics, that’s a tone decision that we mad in the studio. Like, we literally were like, “Okay, let’s say, ‘Hey kids, spelling is fun!’” Because we want everyone to know that this song is not really serious because it’s not, like, a

serious love song. It’s about embracing and owning that you at times feel like, you know, you’re irreplaceable and I want those times to be more often when they hear this song and it gets stuck in their head. I think with a pop song you have the ability to get something stuck in people’s heads and I just want it to be a mantra that kind of is much more self-love than what we often times feel which is selfloathing and insecurity. Tommy: Absolutely amazing single. It’s caught in our heads. Make sure you check it out now if you haven’t already. Taylor Swift just before we let

you go, can you please tell us the album name and when it’s going to be released? Taylor: Um, I will just get back to you. Just give me 20 seconds. I’m gonna go pet a kitten and then I’ll come back and tell you. Carrie: Congrats on everything. Chat to you soon. Thank you so much for your time. Taylor: You guys are the best. Thank you. Carrie: Bye. Tommy: Thanks so much, Taylor. Taylor: Bye! Tommy: Bye!

Taylor: Hello, how are you? Smallzy: I’m very good. It’s been a little while. Taylor: It’s been way too long. Smallzy: It has. Taylor: We’re both too excited. We’re, like, saying the same thing. Smallzy: Yes, absolutely. Congratulations. TS7: the era commences. How are you feeling? Taylor: Thank you. I’m feeling really, really happy and, like, joyful to be honest. Like, this has been such a fun video and song to make and I’m so proud of the album that will come out eventually. It’s just really exciting that the fans are excited. I love my job. It’s just really fun and I’m having, like, a really fun time doing this. Smallzy: Lovely. Well I have got WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

a lightning round of questions to go through, so let’s hit it. Number one, you have a new cat Benjamin Button. How is the cat? Is he good? Taylor: He’s good. He’s literally right next to me. He’s such a good

boy. Smallzy: What about Meredith and Olivia? Are they okay with the new addition? Or was there some getting used to? Taylor: Well, okay, so, my first

cat’s Meredith and when I got Olivia there was a lot of, like, hissing. She’d hiss at Olivia, Olivia was tiny but would hiss back and I was like, “Oh god, this is going to be so much hissing.” But then when I brought him home they’d hiss at him and he would just, like, lay down on the floor and I’m like, “dude.” He’s just a very chill cat. They kind of realized that he doesn’t really care that much. He doesn’t really wanna fight. He’ll pounce on them every once in a while. He’s like the annoying little brother. Smallzy: Lovely. You posted something on Twitter over the weekend saying that you gave away the title to the album somewhere in the music video of the new song. “warm” or “cold” or you can say “I’m not gonna comment.” There’s a fan theory: kaleidoscope. Is that warm or cold? Taylor: I’m not gonna comment because I really do respect their theories so much, you know. I’m gonna tell them all the information when I tell them. Smallzy: Okay, let’s do it like that. I do have to talk about the music video. You and Brendon Urie. Congratulations on the song. Now I’m not sure but—the shoulder shimmies in that video clip are to die for, so congratulations to you both. Taylor: Thank you so much. I will tell him that you said that because we worked very hard on them. Thank you so much. Smallzy: Do you feel like he shoulder shimmied better than you do and you had to step up or were you teaching him a thing or two? Taylor: Yeah, yeah. I mean, I had to step up the whole video. I

have to step up just every time I’m around him because he’s like the best performer, and he has so much energy. Oh, my god. He goes into rehearsals and you have to really keep up. He’s so amazing. Smallzy: Well, your new song is called ME! with Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco playing now. Taylor Swift on the air. Smallzy: Now when you were here in Australia with the reputation Tour it bucketed down with rain at the Sydney show. Now with that stadium tour did that happen many times or was there only a few shows where it rained as crazy as it did that night? Taylor: t happened more times on the reputation Tour than it did on any other tour I’ve done, but it was so much fun because we all just, like, danced in the rain together. It was really just, like, joyous and I think that the crowds not leaving— when I was younger I thought, like, if it rained everyone would leave. And

I was always so scared of it raining. And then the first time I had a rain show I was like, “Oh wait, people are staying?” Like, that’s when it became something that we all welcomed because I’m literally not going to cancel a show no matter what unless physically, like, they tell me that none of us can be on stage or whatever. If it’s raining, like, bring it on. It’s fun. I mean, the crowds—the more that they embrace that, the easier it is for, you know, for all of us to feel like it’s not even raining. It turns it into even more fun. We just try not to slip because I slip and fall sometimes. Smallzy: Oh, my god. Yeah. You don’t need that. Hey, our time is running out but I just quickly wanted to know, is there a message for the Aussie fans? They’re very excited for the new song which, congratulations is like number one already here in Australia. And of course they want to know if you’re planning on coming back anytime soon. Taylor: well I’m definitely

working on the schedule right now and I love the Aussie fans more than I can even say, like, more than I can even verbalize. And I just love them for their passion, for caring about me and being so wonderful, and for making it number one. Thanks guys. That’s amazing. Smallzy: Lovely. Well thank you very much for chatting. I will leave it on if the album is called Kaleidoscope, Lover, or Home, I called it first. If it’s none of those three we’ll pretend I never said it, alright? Taylor: Hey, hey, amazing. You have the theories. You’re so sweet for even having a theory. That is so nice of you. Smallzy: I’m a Taylor fanboy, what can I say? Taylor Swift, thanks for chatting. I appreciate it. Taylor: You’re the best. Thank you! Bye guys. Smallzy: Bye, bye!

saw how many dancers were in that video and not a single person on the video shoot talked about doing it. We did it over a month ago, so you

really can trust people it turns out. Dave: I got this thing that you might have just sent them all letters or maybe threatening them beforehand just to be sure they don’t tell anyone anything. Taylor: You know, threatening probably doesn’t work as well as just being like, “Hey guys, can you please not tell people about this?” Gemma: The videos, Taylor. RADIO INTERVIEWS Hits Radio Interview Cont. alongside the music video they’re like wow, stunned out, fantastic. With regards to that, do you come up with the concepts or is it kind of a joint effort with your team. How do you come around with your videos? Because they’re always so good. Taylor: Well thank you for saying that. I wrote this treatment and sent it to Dave Meyers and we then got together and just kind of thought about, “How can we make the best visual effects out of this?” And every single choice was essentially to foreshadow something that will happen in the course of the album. So everything in that video is basically an Easter egg. It takes a lot of time to plan that but it’s really fun too because the fans have trained me over the last couple of years. When I was sixteen and I put out my

first album I put codes in the lyric jacket of the CD. I capitalized certain letters. I was like, “I wonder if they’ll figure out that it spells out a code,” and they did immediately and they were like, “We love this, this is so fun.” And from then on I’ve known that they like to play games with music. They like for it to be sort of a scavenger hunt or little Easter egg foreshadowing moments. So that makes it fun for me because I like for music to be, you know, as much of an event as possible. Yeah, so that’s why I do that. Dave: You know, everyone’s obsessed in the UK at the moment with Line of Duty and of course globally, Game of Thrones. I know you’re a big fan of Grey’s Anatomy. Taylor: I just watched the new episode and fully cried the whole

time. Dave: Don’t say anything because of the spoiler situation. But what else do you watch at the moment because I know you’ve probably completed Grey’s Anatomy by now. I feel like you watch (...) You named a cat after it. Taylor: I’m not gonna spoil anything for you but I just will say I think it’s the most beautiful episode they’ve ever done and that the score and the visual effects and the acting is like—I just think It’s the greatest show of all time and I’m so excited for you to see this episode. Dave: How’d you do that? You just gave us a load of information but not give us any information. You’re the best at not spoiling things. Taylor: Thank you. I’ve gotten pretty good at being cryptic by

keeping secrets about an album that isn’t out yet. But basically I love Killing Eve as well. I love Flea Bag. Those are my favorite things right now. Gethin: Flea Bag is good. Well I reckon your next single is coming out 13th of July because there were 13 clouds and 7 briefcases. I don’t know what the 8:30 clock means but we’ll carry on to try to find out. Thank you! Richie: I drove to Liverpool on the weekend which is about two hours from where I live and I must have listened to it about 20 times on the way there and 20 times on the way back; it’s so good. Taylor: Seriously? WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

Richie: Honestly. It was so amazing, we couldn’t stop playing it all the way there, all the way back and already this morning I’ve listened to it twice, Taylor, so I’m feeling it. Taylor: Oh, you’re so sweet to say that. Thank you. I really just

feel, like, it’s so nice when people say that it makes them happy. Like, that’s legitimately the best thing you could say. Richie: Well in general, your music does. We were talking about your music on the show last week.

You always make me kind of feel warm and fuzzy which is good, which is what music is meant to do. Taylor: Aw, thanks. Richie: So just give us sort of like a window into the world of Taylor Swift. Where are you right now? Taylor: I’m sitting on my couch; I have three cats within 20 feet of me which is how I prefer to exist. So I had rehearsals and then I came home and then I watched the latest episode of Game of Thrones which was beautiful. I’m not going to spoil anything for anyone but, whoa. your Game of Thrones buddies? Taylor: Well, I’ll watch with anyone who wants to but I get really emotional so there’s a lot of clapping and screaming and crying that happens when I watch Game of Thrones, so sometimes when I know it’s gonna be, like, I heard this was going to be the most intense episode and it was, so I kind of felt like I should probably do this, you know, alone. Richie: Because I imagine that would scare the cats. I imagine they’d look at you like, “Are you okay, hon?” Taylor: They’re so used to it. Richie: What I love about you is that you write your songs yourself. I mean, that is incredible and this new single ME! again you have written. Now with me, when I kind of have, like, an idea or a brainwave it seems to happen at the worst possible time, so, like, in the middle of the night, if I’m walking down the aisle in the supermarket. So what do you do if you’re out and about and you get a melody or a lyric come to you? Taylor: Oh, completely. You never get an idea—almost never— when you’re, like, sitting in a writing session or you’re in the studio or something; it’s always in the middle of the night. There are times when I’ve written a really cool hook in a dream and then you wake up and you’re like, “I’ll definitely remember that, right?” and then you don’t. And that only has to happen to you a couple of times before you start recording every single idea you ever have and so my phone has all these, like, three second voice memos of me just, like, mumbling what I think might be a good idea ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

and if you go back through them, like 97% of them are really, really terrible or completely unintelligible. Like, you have no idea. I’ll be, like, “That was 4:00 in the morning. I have no idea what this even is. This sounds like it doesn’t even sound—it sounds like a grizzly bear. It doesn’t even sound like a human.” But sometimes you get an idea that really works out and this was one of—this was one of those where I had this idea, I stored it up for this writing session because I felt like when we when we went to the studio next this was the first thing I wanted to bring in, and so we constructed the first half of the song and then we’re like you know what this seems like it might be a you know a narrative where we want another person in here to say his side of it, like a duet because it’s about confidence, it’s about expressing your individuality and I think that it’s kind of cool to have, you know, the story be that this is a love song two people in a relationship but both of them feel irreplaceable within that relationship because I think people often times everybody struggles with insecurity, so I just wanted to get a song that was catchy enough to get stuck in people’s heads that also makes them feel like they’re worthy and special and irreplaceable. Richie: Now I love the video and it’s already been one of the fastest most watched music videos on YouTube. 10 million views in just two hours. There’s so many parts of this new video but what I also wonder, ‘cause your videos are always very colorful, there’s lots of outfits, there’s a lot going on. Do you ever take any mementos from the set of your videos? Taylor: Oh, yeah, definitely. This

didn’t happen on this shoot but there have definitely been times where I’ve been, like, “Okay, so this video has a really nice rug in this, you know, in this room. Can I buy this?” When I bought my first apartment I was, like, always shopping basically on photo shoots and video shoots, being like, “Is there any way that’s for sale? Can I buy that for my apartment?” Richie: Well Taylor, thank you so much for speaking to us. The next time you are in the UK please come and see us in the studio because you’re welcome any time. Taylor: Well thanks for inviting me! I’ll do that. Richie: I don’t think Zoe would mind if you just turn up one Tuesday morning. And of course this year is your 30th birthday year, so I hope you have a fabulous 30th. I hope you’ve got a special party planned? Taylor: I haven’t started planning. I don’t even know what I’m gonna be doing in December but I think that’s— like, the Cats movie is coming out so I have no idea—which I’m in. I didn’t explain that at all, but I should have a party this year, shouldn’t I? Richie: You should. I had a karaoke and I did Spice Girls tracks for all my friends and family. They weren’t very thrilled a b o u t it, but I mean, that’s an idea. I don’t

know if it’s an American thing to get really drunk and sing in front of your family? Taylor: I think that’s an amazing idea. Like, I might steal that idea completely because that sounds like the best. Richie: You know what, you can have that one, Taylor. Thank you so much and don’t forget Taylor’s brand new single and video for ME! is out now. Taylor Swift, you are absolutely lovely. Thank you so much, my darling. Taylor: Thank you! RADIO INTERVIEWS Taylor’s Interview with Kyle & Jackie O on KIIS 1065 of Australia LOVETHEPLAYERS 04.29.19

Kyle: It’s Kyle and Jackie. I’ve been telling you all morning: Taylor Swift, the biggest star in the world right now and a new single ME! that’s out now. She joins us on the phone. This is really weird, Jackie, because I was only thinking last week in LA: what’s going on with Taylor Swift? We’re overdue for some Taylor Swift stuff. I felt a vibe—a Taylor Swift vibe, you know what I’m saying? And then, boom, here we are. New song’s out, she’s one of the best in the business. I’d say the best in the world. Good morning, Taylor. Jackie: Hey, Taylor! Taylor: Well, hi! That was a really, really, very nice intro. Kyle: Oh, well you deserve it, doll. Absolutely killing it at the moment. Congrats on that new song. We’re all loving it and oh, that video. Scoring the most video views on YouTube within 24 hours. How good’s that? Definitely well-deserved. Taylor: Oh, thank you for saying that. Thanks for watching it. It was so, so, so much fun to make that video. Like, one of the most fun video shoots I’ve ever had. And yeah, like, collaborating with Brendon Urie on this song was hilarious because he’s just so much fun and so full of energy and kind of brings a hundred and fifty percent enthusiasm to everything he does, so he’s flying through the air, fighting in French. It’s just the whole thing. Jackie: Who came up with the concept for that? Do you come up with that or do you leave it to WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

someone who’s kind of, like—that’s their expertise in that field? Taylor: Well actually I wrote the treatment concept for this video and approached Dave Myers about it and thought–and just thought, like, we could get together and come up with the best visual effects to add to the storyline, so it ended up working out exactly that way. And Dave Myers is an amazing director and we co-directed this and just really tried to make this entire fantastical, magical world but also include as many foreshadowing moments about the new album and visuals that would kind of be, like, little clues and hints and Easter eggs in the video, so it was a process that started months ago and took a lot of time to plan, but it really paid off in the end. I feel like people are, like, being entertained by it and that’s the nicest thing you could tell somebody whose job it is to try to entertain people. Jackie: Yeah, because I noticed in the lead up on your Instagram there were a lot of pastel colors on your page in the lead up to it, which probably a lot of people didn’t realize that was, you know, working towards the announcement of the clip.

Taylor: Yeah, I mean the fans are very clever and they–I think realized it very soon. Like, immediately they realized that this is a very abrupt shift from my Instagram. If you scroll down my Instagram it was all dark colors and then it just immediately turned into just, like, a majestic cloud of Easter colors. My fans picked up on it really quick and–but yeah, the fact that they’re so clever and the fact that they’re so detail-oriented and they watch a video and they’ll watch it, you know, 20 times trying to figure out what they’ve missed, that makes it more fun to do that stuff because if nobody was paying attention and I put, like, 50 Easter egg clues in this music video I’d be so bummed out. I’d be like, “Oh, man. That was a lot of effort for nothing.” Kyle: Hey, now there’s a snake featured within the video clip: that symbol–is that any–is there any–well you know what they say about the snake. Is that about anything? Is that just a thing you’ve thrown in there? What’s the go? Taylor: The snake in the video is symbolic of something. Jackie: Yeah, well we won’t say

what it is then. Well I think we all know. And also in the beginning of the clip you and Brendon, you’re having a fight. I’m thinking, I’m assuming it’s in French, right? Taylor: Yeah, it’s in French and that’s another symbolic clue that will probably be revealed in the next few months. Like, a lot of the Easter eggs that I put in the videos are ones that, like, I want them to age well. Like, I want some of them to be revealed within, you know, people watching the video initially, and then, like, some of them people won’t realize the meaning of them until about, like, 6 months to a year from now when we go on tour. Like, that’s how many– that’s how far ahead I’ve been planning this album. I just want the fans to have a good time. I think that if you look at music and how people used to gather around the record player to listen to music, it was such a social event, and now these days we have I think a responsibility to try and turn music back into a social event, and whatever ways, you know, artists think of to do that, I think it’s really kind of exciting that we have so many outlets now to make a song back into something that people not only listen to but kind of assign to their memories and talk about with their friends. You know, I love, like, Game of Thrones and figuring out theories and clues and things like that, so I think the more we can have that social and discussion element to music the more fun it is for people. Kyle: No, I haven’t watched it yet but I’m dying to because I’ve been over in LA for a while so this week I’ll have three up my sleeve. I’m pretty pumped about it. Everyone’s talking about it. Jackie–she’s so behind. She’s like you know back in season 1, episode 2. What are you? Jackie: So I have missed a whole season and I’ve got to catch up on it. I’ve been a huge fan but I’ve missed a season, but everyone is talking about the latest episode and that it’s a big episode. Is it? Taylor: It’s literally the most beautiful episode I’ve ever seen. And the score is so, so exquisite and the visual effects and the acting and the battle sequences. Like, I don’t want

to be, like, that person who spoils anything so I’m not going to, but, yeah you just have, like, a real wild ride ahead of you. I’m so happy about, like, the quality content we’re getting from Game of Thrones. Jackie: I’ll have to catch up. Taylor: Yeah, it’s so good. Jackie: And you’re gonna be in the new Cats film as well which is supposed to be epic. That comes out around Christmas, right? Taylor: Yeah, it does! I shot that in London for a couple months and it was so much fun, and I learned so much because I was going in every day and I was doing extensive choreography, and dialect coaching, and a class called cat school where they have an expert come in and teach us how to move our bodies like a cat and how to sense things like a cat and how to–just kind of learning as much as we can about their physicality and why they do things the way they do things And it’s, um, it’s been amazing

doing that process of kind of being a part of a big movie. I’m really grateful that I got to do that. Kyle: Oh, but you would have a massive advantage, an upper hand on the rest of the cast. So who’s in it? Rebel Wilson, James Corden–we love him–Idris Elba–totally excellent bloke– but you of all are the biggest cat lover. They don’t come anywhere near you. You love cats. Taylor: They all love cats. They were all so prepared. You have no idea. Kyle: Well we were asking who loves cats more. I’m the biggest pussy lover in this country, so just saying. Just leaving it out there for you. Taylor: Oh, my god. Judi Dench actually was going to be in the original production of Cats but she was injured so she couldn’t be in it. This is actually, like, it’s so meaningful for so many different ways. There is just— like, it was so much fun because everybody was so committed and

also it’s some of the best dancers in the world; like, dancers that I’ve been so, like—admired so much from afar like Mette Towley and just people who are so, so, so insanely talented, and so getting to work with them and getting to know them, it’s no complaints here. Kyle: Well we cannot wait to see you in that film. Congratulations on the film, on the video, on the music. It’s great to see you back, I’m telling you. I’m glad you’re here. New song ME! It’s incredible; well done. Hopefully you’ll come and visit here in Australia soon. The door’s always open. Thanks for chatting, hon. Jackie: Thanks, Taylor . Ryan: But just to understand the DNA here of your brain: so do you— you’re obviously very clever, but do you ever say, “Okay I’m gonna go obvious because they’re gonna think I’m being clever so I’ll go counterintuitively backwards.” Because I’m trying to figure out some things for this next album. I need to know the answer to that. Taylor: Yeah, definitely. It takes a lot of planning and really, like, it’s just basically a flex on planning. Like, this is how far ahead I planned this album. But it’s also just a way for it to become more of a—more of an experience rather than just.. I think that so often music can just be so ephemeral these days. Like, it comes out and we talk about it for, like, a second and then we move on to the next thing. And I think it’s fun for us to create an event and kind of put an experience back into just, you know, a song or a video. That’s what I’m trying to do is make it more more fun for them to talk about it and think about it. And they’re awesome about it, so I guess as long as they have fun with it I’ll keep doing it. Ryan: So we’ve got Lover. You said awesome— you just said awesome, wait. Did you just—Tell me, does the title of the album rhyme with possum? Taylor: I’m definitely going to tell them everything about the album in due time. Ryan: Does it rhyme with WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

saleidoscope? So you’re going to be opening the Billboard Awards which is very exciting. Taylor: It’s exciting. I’ve been in rehearsals all week. It’s really, really exciting. It’s also so much fun with this song because the song is so— it’s just such a celebration and it’s just so playful and mischievous, so that’s been one of the most fun elements of creating the performance. Ryan: Well the video has had, I mean, 65, 70 million views and our own Tanya was very excited to—I am not a good mover. I don’t know if you know that about me so I couldn’t partake in the dancing that she did. I think that you commented on it. Taylor: Oh, yeah I commented on it. It was like the most adorable thing ever. That’s like a really, really nice house you’re in.

Tanya: I have to say I have listened to this song on repeat, literally, I think I’ve, and I’m not even exaggerating, a thousand times. Taylor: Really?! Tanya: Yes, Taylor. It is so fantastic. I feel like everything is right in the world again because we have new music from you and, like, I’m living through it and I just feel like I’ve been living through your music for so many years now and every single time you come out with something it, like, speaks to me at that moment and I’m just so grateful for ME! I just feel like it’s the perfect song for right now. Taylor: Thank you so much for saying that. That

means a lot. That’s so, so sweet of you to say. And literally, like, my heart just, like, starts beating so fast when people say things like that because I think the main purpose of this song— like, when I thought of this melody I was like, “Okay, this is one of those melodies that, like, we could do so much with this, and it’s so catchy that, like, what do we want to get stuck in people’s heads?” And what I wanted was to make people happy about themselves because I think right now there’s just such—literally everyone is so—we’re all just so neurotic and insecure and and anxious about things, you know, and I think that we can, you know, I think there should be, like, a way for us to kind of, like, have a song stuck in our head that reinforces the fact that we’re individuals. We’re different. And obviously there are a lot of songs about “I’m special”, but I hadn’t heard one recently that was about “I’m special because it’s who I am”, you know? There are examples where you can find someone being like, “I’m special because of how I look”; “I’m special because of what I can buy” or whatever, and there’s definitely a place for those songs, but I think there’s also a place for a song that’s like “No, it’s Who I am. it’s intrinsically my individuality that makes me a irreplaceable and not anything else.” So thank you so much for saying that. Ryan: You should know that Wango Tango—Taylor is going to be there. This is her first Wango Tango. She’s done Jingle Ball but not Wango Tango. And there was there was a young student that lives in Iowa, Taylor, that called in to this show a few weeks ago and she just said that, like, she is trying to do continued on pg 32

her own show there for a college radio station and she listens to this show on a regular basis and she called in to say that and, you know, it was great. And then I said, “Well, if there’s one person that you and your town of—I think it’s Dubuque, Iowa—if there’s one person that you would want to ask a question to who would it be?” And she said your name and at the time I wasn’t sure if we’d talk to you—I was hoping we would. And I said, “If we ever get her on the line I’d love to patch you together to ask her one question.” And she’s on the phone. Could I let her ask you something? Taylor: Yeah, of course. Ryan: Audrey? Audrey: Hey, Ryan? How’s it going? Hey, Taylor! Taylor: Hey, Audrey! Audrey: It’s such an honor to talk to you! I don’t know if you remember me but I reached out to you when I was in high school when I did high school radio and you were busy playing on the Red Tour, which by the way was awesome. I’ve seen three of your concert tours. But yeah, It’s been a crazy journey with my radio stuff. I’m a student at Loras College which is a small private school in Iowa and honestly right now it’s raining and you’re brightening up my day, seriously. Taylor: Aw, congratulations on everything with your radio show. That’s awesome. Audrey: So I have a question for you. I think a lot of people want to know it. What are you the most proud of in your career? Your ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

career is—your lucky number, 13 years now and you’re about to put out another album. What is the one thing that just stands out to you that you’re the most proud of? Taylor: Oh, wow, that is— that’s a good question. That is such a good question. I think that—I think that what I’m proud of is having a consistent, really wonderful relationship with the fans who have put me here getting to do the job that I love because I think that reminding—you know I don’t ever have to be reminded. I’m reminded every single day; you guys are literally the only reason why I get to do something that I love so much and I think that a lot of the time people can lose sight of what got them where they are and I think that that’s something that every every day since I started doing this I made sure to, like, remind myself you never ever forget the people who got you here. So thank you for saying that. Audrey: I will say that when I took my aunt and my mom to the first Chicago show of the

Reputation Tour, the one thing that really stood out to the three of us, like, the minute we walked into Soldier Field was the engagement from your merch stand to the videos that you would see to the pre-show playlist. You had everything planned out. Taylor: Thank you so much for noticing the planning! You have no idea how happy that makes me because, like, I really feel like we have the opportunity to create, like, a party. Like, when we plan it we try to plan every single element of a person’s day and so that just—like, that’s validation. Like, you have no idea. I really appreciate you saying it. Audrey: I also will say when you played Our Song—I was sitting there sitting in the second across from the B-stage and when you said, “This is a song I wrote in ninth grade,” I looked at my mom and I was, like, “Oh my god, this is the one song that I haven’t heard yet.” Ryan: Audrey, you are the best. Thank you so much.

Taylor: You are the best. Audrey: I also wanna ask Taylor. I’d love for you to listen to my show if you want to. I can definitely send the link to Ryan and I’ll play any song you want. I was listening to your video blog from, like, over the years, and I was like, “I know a playlist for Taylor.” Ryan: I will make sure that we get her the link. Alright, Audrey? Audrey: Okay, I love you Taylor. You’re the best! Bye, Audrey. Taylor: Good luck with everything. Ryan: Oh, my god. That was just—that’s what it’s about, right? Isn’t that what it’s about? Taylor: She’s the best. Ryan: Thank you so much for calling today. We will see you June 1st at Wango Tango, and we’ll be following the puzzle, so. Taylor: You guys better cater the whole day for them. You better pick a pre-show playlist and all that stuff. Ryan: I know. You’re making me feel complacent. Taylor: Thanks for much for talking to me and for everything over the years. You’ve always been such a great friend and, yeah, I’ll see you at Wango Tango. I’m really excited. Ryan: We are too. You’re the best, Taylor. Thank you again. See you soon. Taylor: Thanks, guys, and thanks for the dance video. WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

RADIO INTERVIEWS Taylor’s Interview with Shannon Burns on CHUM 104.5 of Toronto LOVETHEPLAYERS 04.30.19

Taylor: Hey, it’s Taylor. Shannon: Hey, how’s going? Taylor: It’s going so great. How are you? Shannon: Good! Thank you so much for this chance to talk to you. It’s an honor. Taylor: Oh my gosh. Thank you for saying that; that’s so sweet. Shannon: Okay, so I want to start off by asking, Reputation–it was so full of, like, angst and snakes and things. What made you decide to go in a whole separate route for this new single? Taylor: Well, I think I was feeling differently. You know with my albums, they’re very reflective of kind of my mood and how I’m feeling and what’s going on in my life, and so it’s always very reflective of that. And so, yeah, I feel like I’m in a much brighter, more glittery place in life, so that’s why the music looks more glittery and bright colors. Shannon: Can we kind of expect the same kind of theme for the whole album? Taylor: The album has lots of different kind of emotional tones to it, you know, just in the same way that, like, a person’s never going to just be happy all the time. When I make an album it’s not ever just going to be a happy album because, you know, we’re hopefully complex individuals and as a songwriter you try to reflect that and, you know, I think that with this album it’s definitely very— it’s got a very diverse emotional spectrum of things that are on the album and that’s why it’s so hard WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

for me to always pick the first single. Like, that’s always the most difficult choice that I face because when the album is such a vast landscape of emotions it’s so weird to have to pick one song that represents all of those. That’s why it’s good that you can put out, you know, a lot of music before an album comes out and kind of give people a taste for what the album actually is. Shannon: What made you want to go with ME! for the first single then? Taylor: I wanted to go with ME! for the first single because it’s just sort of a celebration and it kind of bursts open this new world that I see as this new album. It’s very—it’s very flamboyant and colorful and sort of playful and mischievous. Like, it’s definitely like a very playful song but at the heart of it… actually I think with a pop song and especially a very catchy pop song… Like, when I wrote it I was like, “Okay that’s pretty catchy.” So, like, we have an opportunity as writers to say something that other people are going to sing in their head consciously or subconsciously,

right? Like, sometimes you don’t even mean to have a song stuck in your head. But if you have a song stuck in your head and it’s saying, “I’m the only one of me,” like, that’s kind of like a mantra, so you know I hoped that it would, like, go out into the world and, like, make the world a little bit happier. I don’t know. Shannon: And I definitely think that that song does it. It’s perfect for that. Taylor: Thank you. Shannon: Yeah, so there’s a ridiculous amount of Easter eggs that are in this new video. This isn’t a totally new thing for you either but what made you want to start playing that game with fans in the beginning? Taylor: Well I started doing this when I was about 16 and I put out my first album and put out, you know, the album booklet and I just had this idea where I would capitalize letters and, like, if you put the letters all together they would spell out a code, and I was like, “I wonder if any of the fans will pick up on this?” And they did right away and they loved it and told me that I should do more of

that and so it’s kind of—it’s kind of escalated now to a point where I will plan out a music video months and months and months in advance and think about, like, “What can I drop here, what can I plant here?” And it’s the more that they’ve had fun with it, the more that I’ve had fun with it because I think it kind of expands a music experience. It kind of makes it more of, like, a visual experience; it’s kind of like a brain teaser; Kind of, like, something that makes you think about what you’re seeing. It makes you go back and, like, notice the details and so that’s kind of why I do it because it also kind of plays into, like, the mischief of this new era of music that I’m trying to put out which is, like, a little bit more playful than last time, you know? Shannon: Oh totally yeah. I can see that. Is it frustrating watching people guess things online like the album title in the video and then seeing them get it but not being able to just tell them? Taylor: No, no I—I definitely am going to tell them. Shannon: Yes, but is it frustrating seeing that they they get it already but you, like, haven’t said anything yet? Taylor: Some of them have gotten it but some of them haven’t so it’s, um, they’re very clever and, like, all their ideas are very well researched and they have a lot of reasons for why they have their theories which I think is great. Like, I’m a big Game of Thrones fan. I have you know, I’ve had theories going the entire time I’ve been watching the show and when continued on pg 34

34

RADIO INTERVIEWS CHUM 104.5 Interview Cont. continued from pg 33

my theories are proven wrong I’m not, like, disappointed; I just find it fun to have a theory in the first place and to see if it’ll happen. But just—you know, just like some of my theories about Game of Thrones have been right, you know, a lot of their theories on the album title have been right. A lot of them will be, like, high-fiving each other when they realize they were right all along.

Shannon: True. I like that. Also, congrats on your new family member. Taylor: Thank you so much. Shannon: So you didn’t actually plan on adopting him until you met him on set. Is that correct? Taylor: That is correct, and we actually just put up today—on YouTube we put up this behind the scenes video of me meeting the kitten and, like, I literally meet him—I’m so glad they were filming this; like, I didn’t realize there was a behind-the-

scenes camera filming the whole time they hand me the kitten. And I fell in love with him immediately because he’s so sweet. He loves people and so he just started purring as soon as I, like, held him and he is the sweetest, most loving little cat I’ve ever met in my whole life. Shannon: What made you decide to go with the name Benjamin Button? Taylor: I really liked the movie Benjamin Button. Benjamin Button in

the movies is just such a good guy; he’s always doing the right thing. Shannon: That’s true, that’s very true, yeah. I like that a lot. Okay thank you so much for letting me have the chance to chat with you. I really appreciate it. Taylor: Thank you so, so, so much. It was great talking to you. Shannon: Alright have a great day. Taylor: Have a good day.

Taylor’s Interview with Mocha from the Roz & Mocha Show on KiSS 92.5 of Toronto LOVETHEPLAYERS 05.01.19

Mocha: Hello, is this the one, the only Taylor Swift? Taylor: Hi, how are you? Mocha: Doing great. It’s the Roz and Mocha show. You are talking to, like, every single person in Canada right now. What would you like to say to your Canadian fans? Taylor: Oh, my god. That’s so much pressure. I just want to say thank you for everything. They’ve been amazing and I can’t wait to see them again. How are you doing? Mocha: You know what, we’re on the phone with you finally, we’re so happy, and we know how busy your life is. You just wrapped up the Reputation World Tour in November. When did you start working on new music for this new album? Taylor: I started working on it pretty much immediately after that, but I did have a lot of ideas that I’ve been kind of cultivating while I was on tour, so as soon as I got off tour I just went right into the studio and ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

pretty much stayed there. Mocha: Okay, and how long did that that process take from the time—like, was there any type of downtime after the tour to when you started working on new music? Taylor: Not really, um, I just—I was very ready to make the next thing. I knew exactly what I wanted to make next. Mocha: Okay. Taylor: Sometimes that takes a long time. Like, for the album before it, reputation, that took me a very long time to realize what I wanted

to make because after—the album before that was 1989 and I felt so kind of stifled by, like, “Okay, what do I do now?” But with this album I just knew exactly what I wanted to make and so I started making it immediately. Mocha: And how does a collaboration like ME! come to light where you’re working with Brendon Urie? Like, do you reach out to him, did he reach out to you? Were there talks of you guys working on music together? Are you writing together in the same room; are you texting back

and forth? Taylor: Well, yeah. It is very organic like that. Well basically, like, I was writing the song. I wrote the chorus and the first verse with Joel Little who wrote and produced the song with me, and we were in the studio and I was just thinking, “I think this needs to be a duet. I think it would be cool if both people in a relationship were saying this about each other and about themselves, just in the nature of, you know, you’re worthwhile and irreplaceable, and so am I and that’s why this works,” and kind of make it into more of a conversation. And I also wanted it to be very playful. I didn’t want it to take itself seriously at all, so I was thinking, “Who would be an amazing person to bring in to really elevate this; who could be such a good performer and who would want to do this and really want to perform with me on, like, award shows?” Like, you want someone who’s going to be a full team player—no pun intended with the song. But WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

35

RADIO INTERVIEWS KiSS 92.5 Interview Cont. basically I thought of Brendon and I was thinking, “I wonder if he would want to do this,” because obviously he’s having such an amazing year and I figured he’s so busy, but then I saw that he had said in an interview that he would love to collaborate with me and I was like, “Oh, my god. Maybe he’ll do it.” So I, like, reached out to his management and he was immediately on board. He literally came to the studio, like, a week later and recorded his part and also, like, helped write the bridge with us and just really finished the song with his personal touch on it which was nice. Mocha: Oh, so all it takes is a shout-out to Taylor Swift. So if I said right now next time Taylor Swift that you were in Toronto and we would love to have you live in studio on the Roz and Mocha show, we could

totally make that happen? Taylor: Well that would definitely help, yes. Mocha: In the lead-up to the release of ME! you made an appearance at the the NFL Draft which had some people, including my co-host Roz, speculate that you might be performing at next year’s Superbowl halftime show. We know that or may not know that you are or not working with Coke anymore which would totally open the door for a deal at the Pepsi halftime show. Taylor: I mean, I hadn’t even thought about it, but I’m really flattered that you have such big dreams for me. Mocha: The internet detectives are out there. Your fans are the ones that are piecing this together as well. Taylor: Yeah, they’re really—

they’re so, so clever and I mean with that I really just thought it was a coincidence that it was in Nashville. Like, the NFL Draft is in Nashville and I’m from Nashville and that was really—it was the Nashville connection. I wasn’t, like—I wasn’t, like, at that point in time I wasn’t, like, leaving a cryptic tapestry. But I am with most things. Mocha: Okay, and other than Brendon Urie are there any other features on the new album? Taylor: I’m gonna definitely let people kind of discover that when the time comes. You are so curious and I love it. I’m loving your energy. Mocha: I’m asking the questions that the fans are trying to get answers to as well, including the album title. Taylor: I don’t break under interrogation.

Mocha: Taylor Swift, it was such a pleasure talking to you. Thank you so much. Again, I know that you’re super, super busy right now. Congratulations on the success of ME! especially breaking YouTube and VEVO in 24 hour view records. That is amazing; we cannot wait to see you live in person in Canada, across the entire country in various cities. You know this country has mad love for you. Thank you, thank you, thank you and we can’t wait for the album Taylor: Well thank you so much. It’s awesome talking to you too, and thank you for saying that you can’t wait for the album. That’s amazing to hear. I’ll talk to you guys soon and hopefully see you. Mocha: Yeah, for sure. Take care, Taylor. Taylor: Bye!

Taylor’s Interview with Annetta Politi on SWR3 of Germany LOVETHEPLAYERS 05.02.19

Annetta: Hi, Taylor? Taylor: Hey! Annetta: Hi! This is Taylor Swift calling us. Hi! Taylor: It’s so great to talk to you. Annetta: We’d like to start with a with a great congrats on this mega song and video. Got the most video views in 24 hours and it looks like a lot of fun for you. Taylor: Aw, thank you so much. it’s so exciting and I’m really, really so grateful. It was really fun to get to make this video and I’m just so happy that people are enjoying it and watching it. It makes me really happy. WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

Annetta: At the beginning of this video with Brendon you have a fight in French and we are just, like, “Okay, maybe this is a hint that she’s coming to Europe.” Taylor: I would definitely love to come back to Europe. I definitely

want to tour there more and I love the European fans so much, and they’ve been so, so good to me, so I really want to make an effort to go out of my way to really tour in Europe more extensively than I have in the past, and it will definitely be revealed in the

future what the symbolism of that is. Annetta: Okay, now we’re talking and we’re just, like, do you know Baden-Baden, the city where we are? It’s near the French border so we will say just, like, hey come to BadenBaden, Taylor. We have a small little city. It’s even smaller than your hometown in Pennsylvania. We have a small little theater and we’d love to have you here in Baden-Baden. Taylor: That’s amazing! Thank you so much for inviting me; that’s so cool. It’s great to hear you guys have an amazing theater there! Those are so much fun to perform in, and I will definitely tell my team that you invited me. Thank you so much. MERCH You Can’t Spell New Merch Without ME! ZINETHIRTEEN

TANYA OHNMEISS

04.30.19

New era. New merch! :) Taylor debuted her new single ME! along with some very awesoME merch to go along with it! This new merch gives off all the fun vibes that you feel when you listen to the lead single as well as matches the visuals seen throughout the music video. Taylor and her team are also releasing exclusive merch for only a limited time to purchase. That way, some of this merch will be super rare, just like the white pullover and peach crop sweatshirt from the reputation era. They must have realized how good of a marketing strategy that was to have limited edition merch. Taylor and her team know that we are all crackheads for anything she puts out and everything she does put out is worth it! They are SO CUTE. Anyway, there is a core merch that will be readily available for purchase, along with the limited edtion items. So far, it seems the fandom has been all about the new merch and loves every bit of it! I for one, absolutely love the new merch and have already ordered a bunch to add to my Taylor collection. :) I am curious to see what other designs come out as the era continues! Including tour merch! YAASSS!

Well, I have known her since love story, but I wasn’t a dedicated 100% fan that time. But, when I was 11 years old (grade 6 at the time) my best friend was a swiftie and she made me listen to Shake It Off. I was incredibly surprised that she turned to pop. But, unlike most of my classmates who thought it wasn’t good cuz it wasn’t “her thing”, I really liked that she tried something new. I decided to borrow all my friend’s albums and listened to it all. I started watching a lot of videos and documentaries and led me to live tour movies and now im here, with a fan account.

I have made some amazing swiftie friends. They are all amazing and supportive. The best part is all of us share the same energy when it comes to Taylor. I love all my swiftie friends and there is always a platform to talk about Taylor with the same energy.

WE ARE SWIFTIES Meeting Taylor at the TIME 100 Gala TWITTER

RYANSCHOCKET 04.24.19

So, I arrived at the TIME Gala. It was a super last-minute decision to cover the event, hence why I’m not wearing a suit in the pic. I’m waiting around as reporters and photographers get set up, and I look up and see a guy I matched with on Tinder and used to talk to for a couple of months. So, I’m like, “Ok, I already know this is going to be an interesting moment tonight.” (He wound up being awesome to hangout with - not even just saying that because he follows me and might see this.) All the journalists are waiting for celebs to arrive and a lot of people were assuming Taylor wouldn’t do interviews and would have to be really quick because she was performing at the gala. I didn’t even expect to interview her because she doesn’t do much press. I just wanted to see her in person. It was getting closer to 6:30 aka 􀀗he red carpet start time, so I figured I’d go to the bathroom, so I wouldn’t pee myself while interviewing, like, The Rock or someone. As I leave the bathroom, I hear a lot of commotion, but like hushed commotion, if that makes sense. It was very spy movie-ish. I hear someone whisper, “She’s coming soon.” My body literally was overtaken. I started shaking. I’m like, “OMG, I am definitely going to wait here so I can see ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

Ryan and Taylor at the TIME 100 Gala

my idol in the flesh.” (You have to understand - I’ve stanned Taylor Swift since I was a closeted 12-yearold and used to just justify my obsession to others with “I think she’s hot.”) After 45 minutes of waiting around the area as if I belonged there, I look behind me to see a beautiful, divine entity walking toward me. It was THE Taylor Swift. THE songwriting phenomenon and inventor of the numbers 13 and Fifteen. I don’t even think she had security or anyone with her, just her publicist. In my mind, I thought, “How do I let her know I’m a fan and not just someone who’s annoying and/or a stalker?”

So, as if we’ve been friends for years, I go, “TAY-LEGEND. HEY!” She looks at me, smiles, and excitedly says, “HEY!” Or maybe it was “HI.” I don’t remember because I was so enraptured by her fucking BEAUTY. Like, it’s not human. “I fucking love you,” I tell her. “I’ve been to all your tours.” “AW!” She says, before coming over and taking three selfies with me. “I’m Ryan Schocket,” I say as she starts to walk toward the sea of paparazzi. She then turned into an excited 10-year-old and tells me that she knows me. I’m wearing a sports jacket from like Target and a free shirt my friend gave me...and this

legend knows me???????? She even used these grand arm gestures to point at me. She then says, “It was so nice meeting you!” before doing her red carpet pictures. After I stopped convulsing, stopped texting all my best friends and the Tinder guy, I looked at the selfie we took. I was like, “Wow, I just met Taylor Swift, and of course I look tragic in the photo.” Yeah, this was not going to work. So, when she got off from slaying the shit out of her carpet pics, she walked by and I go, “Ugh, Taylor, I look fugly in the pics we took.” She laughs and goes “Oh ... ok!” and comes over to me and takes a new selfie. Keep in mind she’s literally about to perform in front of a bunch of famous people and stops for me. STILL, though, like NOT A GREAT PIC. So, her publicist was like, “Do you want me to just take it?!” I was like, “Um.......yeah!” So we took a real pic together and I think it turned out really great. She looks angelic and I’m not worthy to stand next to her, but I will always cherish that moment. After we took the pic, I repeated “Taylor ... l’m Ryan Schocket.” She AGAIN goes, “Yes, I KNOW YOU!” And I go “I love you. Please don’t forget me.” “I won’t,” she says as she smiles and waves goodbye. WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

WE ARE SWIFTIES My Experience Meeting Taylor at the Billboard Music Award TUMBLR

A-SWIFT-CATASTROPHE 05.03.19

I was near the stage helping out my team and thought Taylor had left, and then I walked right past her! I literally did a double take lol. She was introducing Maluma to the woman next to her (I’m really bad with names, so if anyone knows who that was please let me know!) and I didn’t want to bother them, but part of me felt like this was my last chance and she had been interacting with fans right before. I paced closely for a bit before the woman next to her noticed and pointed at me. Taylor smiled at me and I said, “hi Taylor! my name is Diamond and I’m sorry to bother you, but you’ve followed me on tumblr for 3 years” and she got excited and asked what my user is and I told her (a-swift-catastrophe) and she paused and was like, “oh my god, you’re so funny!” I don’t remember how this happened - maybe when I introduced myself at the start - but she was holding my hand for the longest time as we were talking and it was literally the best feeling ever. I told her how I’ve loved her and her music for the past 11 years and that I couldn’t believe I was finally meeting her. her immediate response was, “do you want to take a picture?” I reacted a bit hesitantly because I didn’t want ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019

to get in trouble and I think she noticed that I was working the show, so she quickly added, “I can meet you off to the side of the stage after, or if you have a quick second we can take one now!” so I mentally said “fuck it!” and she took the time to stand up (!!!) and grabbed my phone. I can’t even begin to express how good she is at taking selfies y’all (homegirl seriously has the angles and poses down; I was in a blissful

state of shock the entire time lol) and we took 2 different, completely adorable selfies that I’m so in love with. I’m lowkey so happy that she had her head tilted toward me too! lol I’m pretty sure I accidentally bumped my head with hers because we were so close. As she was sitting back down, I said “by the way, I’ve seen you in concert 8 times” and she had a big smile on her face, said something along the

lines of “that’s awesome!” and high-fived me/held my hand for a few seconds before I thanked her one last time and got back to work. the whole interaction was maybe a minute at most, but it’s something I’m never going to forget in my entire life. I just can’t believe the one thing I’ve wanted for half my life finally happened and everything about it was so perfect. I truly was enchanted to meet you, Taylor! WWW.ISSUU.COM/ZINETHIRTEEN

H0LLYARMSTR0NG 05.10.19

THE STORY: She was just so genuine - she makes you feel like you matter. I was hooked. And honestly, it was pure luck that I met her. I was visiting family in NY at the time, and we were renting a beach house near the boardwalk. I heard someone playing country music, so I got my 12yr old Texas butt to the source. She was playing for four or five groups of people, so I stayed for the whole set. It couldn’t have been more than fifteen minutes. Seeing that she was my age, I walked up to her after, and we talked for a quick bit. I asked for a demo cd, she signed it. I started 6th grade after that summer, and when we were asked to stand up and tell the class our favorite singer, I said Taylor Swift LOL. I played the hell out of those two songs (yes, on my Walkman) for three years. I followed her on MySpace afterwards and recorded little soundbites to listen to - that’s where I first heard picture to burn. Even back then, she got me through some very tough times. July 23, 2003 Holly: I hope you get runited with Taylor this era! How amazing would that be to show her these photos after all these years?! AMAZING! Love this whole story. :) - Tanya ZINE THIRTEEN ISSUE 22 MAY 2019
