Welcome to Moomba 2013 – an entertainment spectacular nearly 60 years in the making. With a huge array of free activities and events on offer across the Labour Day long weekend, Moomba seeks to celebrate the diversity and creativity that is inherent to our community – providing Melbournians with a festival they can call their own. In 2013, Moomba is gathering memories, capturing moments and standing proud, and we are excited to offer you a program that captures and celebrates our traditional lineage, while staying relevant to our contemporary audience. Moomba’s programming is designed to be highly engaging and interactive, with all activities, workshops and stage performances carefully selected through expression of interest, commission or invitation process to achieve this.
2
As you enter the festival on the south side you will discover a photographic pathway that represents ‘Moomba through the Ages’. Through a series of installations, the display represents Moomba of old, our proud heritage and our speckled past, which have all led to the festival being what it is today. Beyond this area, a large outside gallery also provides the canvas for several local artists who will capture the festival as they see it over the weekend, culminating to produce a representation of the very best of Moomba - old and new. In celebration of our carnival and circus lineage we are thrilled to be working with one of the world’s oldest circus families Ashton Circus. This theme carries through the festival programming, particularly in our Opening Night show and the nightly fireworks display, and is an integral part of our expanded Kid’s program.
The kid’s carnival on peppercorn lawn, an arena of workshops, activities and exciting stage performances are all set around the Ashton Circus big top – inspiring mini-Melbournians with countless opportunities to learn, play, laugh and be a part of the magic of Moomba. At its heart, Moomba is a uniquely Melbourne community event. At the star garden you will find the building site for the People’s Float, a free all-ages activity that gives everyone the opportunity to contribute to one of the amazing Moomba Parade floats. On Saturday and Sunday, visitors to the site can ‘get their hands dirty’, adding their own special touch to the Float and on Monday everyone will watch as their creation takes pride of place in the Moomba Parade.
Celebrating our city’s art and cultural diversity has always been an important feature of Moomba, and our 2013 Music program directly reflects this. With an eclectic range of local and national acts, we are making sure there is something for everyone in the line-up, and our Closing Night show features one of Melbourne’s most well-loved musical entertainers – Nicky Bomba. Melbourne’s cultural richness is also celebrated in the Cultural Quarter with a diverse mix of popular local bands presented alongside performances and workshops from community and multicultural groups, in an intimate setting. Fostering new talent, members of Melbourne’s thriving busking community have also been selected to perform on our busking pitch.
We have expanded our Youth program this year, too – which is set in and around the ever-popular Riverslide Skate Park. With clinics and comps for skaters, scooters and BMX riders, the Beats stage showcasing the freshest up-andcomers on Melbourne’s music scene, a nightly Silent Disco, and a gaming area, we’re ensuring that young, urban Melbournians can find their place at Moomba.
Whether coming with your family, meeting friends, discovering new music or enjoying one of our traditional events, we are sure that you will enjoy Moomba 2013. We are excited to offer such a broad and colorful program of events, and to celebrate our connection to the ever-changing and alwaysamazing City of Melbourne.
And, of course, alongside all these new additions we’re pleased to offer all the old-Moomba staples: Moomba Parade, Birdman Rally, Moomba Masters water championship, and the alwaysopen carnival rides. With a few tweaks and new inclusions, these traditional elements are a solid part of our history and will remain firmfavourites for past, present and future Moomba generations. 3

WATER Watch in awe from the banks of the Yarra as the best-of-the-best Australian and international waterskiers and wakeboarders battle it out in this exciting world-class competition.
Wakeboarding In this exciting division, the world’s best wakeboarders hit the Yarra, skimming along the waters surface and using the motorboat’s wake to perform jumps and tricks. JUMP Reaching speeds of up to 110kph, our world-leading waterskiers will launch from the water courtesy of a ramp, soaring through the air and travelling more than 70m. NIGHT JUMP As the sun sets over the Yarra River, the degree of difficulty increases in this extension of the regular jump competition. Viewers will enjoy a spectacular show – not to be missed!
SLALOM Using a single ski, the slalom division challenges the most agile of waterskiers. With dramatically increased speeds, competitors must manoeuvre their way through and around a 6-buoy course. Big Dawg Slalom Presented by Nautique, this series is open to skiers 35 years or older, who have not placed within the top ten in a professional tournament in the past three years. Skiers battle head-to-head, with the top seed having the option of performing first or second. Whichever skier takes to the course second must then beat the first skier’s score.
TRICKS Our waterskiers have a 20-second run during which they will perform a series of their chosen tricks. Judges will assess the tricks, and score them based on their level of difficulty and how well executed they are. The skier who achieves the highest score will win the tournament.
THE COMPETITION The Moomba Masters Championship runs day and night across the Moomba weekend, with both male and female athletes competing in six disciplines – slalom, tricks, jump, night jump, big dawg and wakeboarding – to win a coveted Moomba Masters title.

PA R A D E 11am, MONDAY 11 march ST KILDA ROAD
A true carnival-style celebration of our community through a colourful and eclectic array of performers, community groups and much-loved personalities. This year, the Moomba parade will celebrate community, culture and the arts through the theme: Melbourne is Creative. From iconic and historic buildings sitting side-by-side with contemporary architecture, to the bustling schedule of festivals, theatre shows and cultural celebrations year-round, living in Melbourne is synonymous with enjoying the creative side of life.
24
With seven spectacular floats, 35 community groups and 1400 performers, the 2013 Moomba parade will celebrate Melbourne’s creative and cultural status, paying homage to our internationally acclaimed arts and creative communities – including theatre, literature, film, visual arts, music, dance, circus, media and architecture. And, in a break from parade tradition, the royal float carrying the 2013 King and Queen of Moomba will this year lead the parade and the festivities.
LOCATION St Kilda Road. The parade runs northbound on St Kilda Road (on the park side of the road) between Dorcas St and Linlithgow Avenue.
BEST VIEWING
Our pedestrian marshals can help direct you to the best viewing positions – but we recommend closer to the parade’s starting point, near the Shrine of Remembrance. The natural elevation on the park side of the route will provide a great vantage point, so arrive early and grab your spot.
GETTING THERE
Public transport is the best way to get to the Parade. Head to Flinders Street Station which is a 300m walk from the end of the route. You can also get trams along Swanston Street to Flinders Street station, or from the south to Domain Interchange.

The Yarra River is an iconic part of our city. It has long been an integral feature of Moomba – our Birdmen plummet into it, fireworks dance in the sky above it, and some of the world’s best water athletes compete on it. But all this wouldn’t be possible without Parks Victoria. Charged with managing recreation on this highly-valued and beautiful waterway, the Parks Victoria team work hard to ensure that our river remains clean, safe and a great place to visit.

With more than 1 million people visiting Moomba over the long weekend, there are a few important details that will help ensure we all have a great time. Getting to the festival
Alcohol
Coming to Moomba? Our city’s network of trains, trams and buses make it super easy to get to and from the event. Visit the PTV website ptv.vic.gov.au or call 1800 800 007, for up-to-date info on Melbourne’s public transport.
The Moomba Festival is an alcohol free event. Penalties apply.
If you’re using public transport on Labour Day (Monday 11 March) don’t forget that the public holiday timetable will apply. Road closures surrounding the festival may also affect public transport services on Moomba Monday. Check out melbourne.vic.gov.au/moomba for more information. Accessibility All mobility equipment hire services are managed by Travellers Aid, who have equipment available for hire at both Flinders St and Southern Cross Stations. Call 03 9610 2030 or visit www.travellersaid.org.au/services/request-equipment to make a booking at least 24-hours in advance. Pets Our festival site will be chock-a-block full of people across the weekend, please leave your pets at home! Assistive animals are permitted.
Smoking Patrons are asked to keep all entertainment and food areas smoke free. Other handy tips Things can really heat up on the banks of the Yarra! Whether you’re enjoying the live music, wandering through the carnival site, or watching the world-class water sports, always make sure you’re being sunsmart. But, if you do forget your sunscreen or water there’s no need to panic - we have some onsite. Check out the event map for locations. As Melbourne’s free festival, we are excited to offer you a jam-packed schedule of free events and activities across the weekend. The only things you will need money for are carnival rides and food, and of course your transport to and from the festival – the rest is on us! For further festival information, visit: www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/moomba or call (03) 9658 9658
Keep it clean Just one piece of rubbish can make a difference to our environment, rivers and waterways, so please dispose of your rubbish thoughtfully and look for recycling bins for your bottles and recyclables. 31
