Si tratti di progetti a carattere residenziale o direzionale, i BALANCE lavorano sempre nell’ottica di rendere omaggio al contenitore preesistente, cogliendone i caratteri identitari ma attualizzandolo con un linguaggio contemporaneo. L’operazione metodologica che portano avanti consiste nel sottrarre, piuttosto che aggiungere, nel ricucire passato e presente, nell’integrare elementi site-specifc (parallelamente agli aspetti strutturali, quelli di arredo e allestimento si fondono con l’edifcio nel loro modo di progettare). Per il progetto Brand Distribution a Torino ad esempio la leggerezza è data dalla permeabilità dello spazio, dalle poche partizioni interne, dalle sovrapposizioni di strati e densità, anche vegetali. Per l’intervento Luzzati invece – una palazzina del 1921 nel centro di Cuneo, vincolata dalla Soprintendenza dei Beni Architettonici – fondamentale era mantenere lo spirito dell’epoca, ma anche che l’aspetto della casa non fosse totalmente fnito. Questo perché i dettagli non ultimati e le sovrapposizioni – porzioni di muro esistente a vista, carta da parati originale degli anni 20, mattoni d’epoca – trasferiscono una carattere autentico, vero e ospitale. Basta poi aggiungere un twist, come un tocco aquamarina, o vernice nera per il sofftto ligneo. Qu’il s’agisse de projets résidentiels ou de bureaux, BALANCE travaille toujours de manière à respecter le conteneur existant, en conservant ses caractéristiques propres et en l’actualisant avec un langage contemporain. L’opération méthodologique de l’agence consiste à soustraire plutôt qu’à ajouter, à recoudre le passé et le présent, à intégrer des éléments spécifques au site (parallèlement aux aspects structurels, ceux de l’ameublement et de l’aménagement se fondent avec le bâtiment dans sa manière de concevoir). Par exemple, pour le projet Brands Distribution à Turin, la légèreté résulte de la perméabilité de l’espace, du peu de cloisons internes, de la superposition des couches et des densités, y compris végétales. Quant au projet Luzzati – un bâtiment datant de 1921 situé dans le centre de Cuneo et classé par la Surintendance des biens immobiliers – il était essentiel de conserver l’esprit de l’époque, tout en veillant à ce que l’aspect de ce bâtiment ne soit pas totalement fni. Et ce, parce que les détails non terminés et les superpositions – parties visibles du mur existant, papier peint original des années 1920, briques d’époque – transmettent un caractère authentique, vrai et accueillant. Il sufft ensuite d’ajouter une touche d’aigue-marine ou de la peinture noire au plafond en bois.

Whether for residential or offce projects, BALANCE always work with a view to paying homage to what was previously there, capturing its distinctive features while upgrading it in a contemporary idiom. The methodology implemented consists in subtracting rather than adding, stitching together the past and present, incorporating site-specifc features (in conjunction with structural factors as the furnishings and fttings merge into the building according to their method of design). For the Brands Distribution project in Turin, for example, lightness comes from the permeability of the space, its relatively few internal partitions, and superimpositions of layers and densities, including vegetation. For the Luzzati project on the other hand – a 1921 building in the centre of Cuneo listed by the Fine Art and Monuments committee – it was essential to maintain the spirit of the period, while ensuring building also had a not-totally-fnished appearance. That is because the unfnished features and overlaps – exposed sections of the existing wall, original 1920s wallpaper, period bricks – convey an authentic, true and hospitable feel and mood. All it takes is to add a twist, such as an aquamarine fnish or black paint for the wooden ceiling.

Il messaggio è chiarissimo: è possibile realizzare interni di carattere anche utilizzando fniture e materiali poco pregiati, anzi, estrapolati dalla loro funzione essenziale e trasformati in qualcos’altro. Un approccio low tech, low budget, ma molto creativo. Non solo estetico, anche concettuale ed esperienziale. Gli spazi dell’aggregazione e della socialità, ma anche quelli di passaggio, sono sempre immaginati dai BALANCE in maniera informale, dove a prevalere è l’idea di riusare (upcycling & recycling), ricollocare, enfatizzare. Nel progetto per la sede di Terowongan ad esempio, un’ex tipografa del quartiere Vanchiglia (TO), le quinte dei connettivi sono realizzate come una pelle avvolgente rivestita da pannelli retroilluminati in vetroresina verde o lamiera metallica ondulata. E l’esoscheletro è una struttura a secco, con telai e palchi in betulla, o librerie in tondino di ferro.

Le message est très clair : il est possible de réaliser des intérieurs de caractère même en utilisant des fnitions et des matériaux de peu de valeur, et même, détournés de leur fonction première et transformés en quelque chose d’autre. Une approche low tech, low budget, mais très créative. Non seulement esthétique, mais aussi conceptuelle et expérientielle. BALANCE ARCHITECTURA imagine toujours, de manière informelle, les espaces d’agrégation et de sociabilisation, mais aussi les espaces de passage, où l’idée de réutiliser (upcycling & recycling), réaffecter, mettre en valeur est au cœur du projet. Par exemple, dans le projet relatif au siège de Terowongan, une ancienne typographie située à Turin, dans le quartier Vanchiglia, les parois du couloir sont réalisées comme une peau enveloppante recouverte de panneaux rétro-éclairés en fbre de verre verte ou en tôle ondulée. La structure est en construction à sec, avec des cadres et des gradins en bouleau, ou des bibliothèques en tiges de fer.

The message is very clear: it is possible to create interiors with real character even when using low-end fnishes and materials or, in other words, extrapolated from their basic function and turned into something else. A low-tech, low budget but very creative approach. Not just aesthetic but also conceptual and experiential. The spaces for congregating, socialising and also the passageways are always imagined informally according to BALANCE, so the idea of reusage (upcycling & recycling), relocation and enhancement always hold sway. In the project for the headquarters of Terowongan, for example, a former printing house in the Vanchiglia (TO) district, the backgrounds of the connecting structures are designed like an enveloping skin covered with backlit panels of green fbreglass or corrugated metal sheeting. And the exoskeleton is a dry structure with birch frames and platforms or bookcases made out of iron rods.
