Ce que cette exposition entend montrer, c’est que Raphaël n’est pas né peintre pour devenir ensuite architecte, mais qu’il a été architecte dès le début de sa carrière artistique et que, même dans ses œuvres fguratives, il vit immédiatement une idée nouvelle et innovante de l’espace, alimentée par l’étude et l’imitation de l’architecture de la Rome antique. L’exposition présente des dessins originaux, dont de très précieux autographes de Raphaël, provenant du Royal Institute of British Architects de Londres et de la Galerie des Offces de Florence, des carnets et des manuscrits de la Bibliothèque nationale centrale de Florence, des sculptures antiques et des livres de la Renaissance.

L’exposition est accompagnée d’un catalogue scientifque qui rassemble les résultats des nouvelles recherches sur l’architecture bâtie et peinte de Raphaël.

Àl’occasion du centenaire de la naissance du peintre britannique Lucian Freud (1922-2011), le Musée national Thyssen-Bornemisza de Madrid et la National Gallery de Londres présentent une rétrospective de son œuvre. L’exposition présente une cinquantaine d’œuvres qui couvrent les sept décennies de la carrière de l’un des plus importants artistes européens du XXe siècle. La peinture de Lucian Freud, incisive, subversive et parfois choquante, représente principalement le corps humain et l’image de l’homme moderne.

In occasione del centenario della nascita del pittore britannico Lucian Freud (1922-2011) il Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza e la National Gallery di Londra presentano una retrospettiva sull’artista e la sua opera. La mostra presenta circa 50 opere che ripercorrono i sette decenni della carriera di uno dei più importanti artisti europei del XX secolo. La pittura di Freud, incisiva, sovversiva e talvolta scioccante, si concentra sulla rappresentazione del corpo umano e sulla rappresentazione dell’uomo moderno.

Quello che la mostra è decisa a dimostrare è che Raffaello non nasce pittore e poi diviene architetto, ma che architetto lo è sin dall’inizio della propria attività di artista, e come anche nelle sue opere fgurative viva da subito una nuova e innovativa idea di spazio, alimentata dallo studio e dall’imitazione dell’architettura della Roma antica. In mostra disegni originali, fra cui preziosissimi autograf di Raffaello, provenienti dal Royal Institute of British Architects di Londra e dagli Uffzi, taccuini e manoscritti dalla Biblioteca Centrale di Firenze, sculture antiche e libri rinascimentali. Ad accompagnare la mostra, un catalogo scientifco che raccoglie gli esiti delle nuove ricerche sulle architetture costruite e dipinte di Raffaello.

What the exhibition is determined to show is that Raphael was not a painter who later became an architect, he was actually an architect from the very beginning of his career as an artist. It also shows that even his fgurative works demonstrate a new and innovative idea of space based on his studies and the inspiration he drew from the architecture of ancient Rome. On display are original drawings, including highly valuable autographs by Raphael on loan from the Royal Institute of British Architects in London and the Uffzi, notebooks and manuscripts from the Biblioteca Centrale in Florence, as well as ancient culptures and Renaissance books.

Accompanying the exhibition is a scholarly catalogue documenting new research into the architecture Raphael built and painted.

To mark the centenary of the birth of the British painter Lucian Freud (1922-2011) the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza and the National Gallery in London are presenting a retrospective on the artist and his work. The exhibition features around 50 works that span the seven decades of the career of one of the most important European artists of the 20th century. Freud’s painting, which was incisive, subversive and on occasions shocking, focused on the representation of the human body and the portrayal of modern man.

L’effroyable, le grotesque, l’absurde et le comique se fondent dans les œuvres de l’artiste américaine Dana Schutz, née en 1976 au Michigan, et qui vit et travaille aujourd’hui à Brooklyn. Depuis deux décennies, elle se distingue par sa force narrative, son sens aigu des couleurs et son tempérament dramatique, comme véritable peintre d’histoires pour notre époque. Bien que l’art de Dana Schutz puisse sembler sinistre, grossier, voire même presque répugnant parfois – car il s’agit effectivement d’un style lourd –, il a assurément quelque chose de fascinant, pour ne pas dire d’envoûtant. Et l’on ne doute jamais de la compassion et de la sensibilité profondes et intrinsèques de l’artiste à l’égard de notre société et de notre époque.

The gruesome, grotesque, absurd and comic merge in the works of American artist Dana Schutz, who was born in 1976 in Michigan, and today lives and works in Brooklyn. For two decades now, she has distinguished herself with her narrative power, vigorous sense of colors and dramatic nerve – a true story painter for our time.

Il raccapricciante, il grottesco, l’assurdo e il comico si fondono nelle opere dell’artista americana Dana Schutz, nata nel 1976 nel Michigan, che oggi vive e lavora a Brooklyn. Da due decenni ormai si distingue per il suo potere narrativo, il vigoroso senso dei colori e il nervo drammatico: una vera pittrice di storie per il nostro tempo. Sebbene l’arte di Schutz possa sembrare cupa, grossolana, a volte quasi ripugnante – questa è davvero roba pesante – c’è sicuramente qualcosa di avvincente, persino incantevole in essa. E non si mette mai in dubbio la profonda e profonda compassione e sensibilità dell’artista nei confronti della società e dei tempi in cui viviamo insieme.

Although Schutz’s art can seem grim, crass, at times almost repulsive – this is heavy stuff indeed – there is defnitely something compelling, even enchanting about it. And one is never in doubt of the the artist’s deep, underlying compassion and sensitivity towards the society and the times in which we live together.
