Slits & Slots by Tan Zi Syuen
The Slit and Slot is a five-story residential building, meticulously crafted using a combination of rabbet and dado joinery. Originating from a concept inspired by tongue and groove joinery, a probe was developed to explore the tactile qualities and scalability of the structure. This initial probe was then abstracted and expanded into a series of progressions, ultimately forming the basis for the creation of individual living units. Each unit is carefully curated through the expansion and combination of sample aggregations. When considered in relation to its site, this vertical dwelling is purposefully designed to enhance connectivity among the residents of Kampong Kapor. The intention is to revive the communal spirit that was lost due to a tragic fire. Commemorating the village community, the building incorporates communal and linkage spaces to foster intimacy among residents. Featuring various unit types derived from sample aggregations, the Slit and Slot enables residents to connect with neighbours from diverse backgrounds. The diverse unit types cater to different spatial needs, ensuring that the building serves various groups of residents. The central light well and circulation system guide individuals through different levels of the vertical dwelling, creating a journey that unfolds diverse moments and scenes. As one ascends the residential core, they are led to engage with different stories, further enriching the overall living experience. The overarching goal of Slit and Slot is to provide a secure environment where residents can come together, learn, and thrive within their living spaces. Slits and slots aspire to establish a secure haven for residents, encouraging them to forge connections, learn from one another, and collectively grow within the shared living spaces. The project’s vision is to not only provide shelter but to actively contribute to the rebuilding of a strong sense of community within Kampong Kapor.
The chosen joinery, specifically the tongue and groove method, has led me through three distinct iterations to arrive at this final prototype. Comprising three primary components, two of which are equivalent, this probe culminates in the integration of these elements onto an H-shaped component. A comprehensive study has been conducted to comprehend the haptic qualities and scalability of these components.
An abstraction process was undertaken to refine the initial probe, resulting in the development of the first aggregated probe. This progression involved a series of abstracted steps achieved through extension and extraction techniques. The abstraction was explored along different pathways, including both vertical and horizontal orientations. From these explorations, the three most promising interactions were selected for further development. In the first stage of abstraction progression, the chosen iterations underwent modifications and translations to conceptualize potential livable spaces, keeping scalability in mind. An illustrative example involves the combination of four operated cubes, where binders were adjusted based on abstraction modifications. This represents the initial iteration of a connected dwelling formed by the amalgamation of two sets of four operated cubes. Moving to the second stage, the operated cubes were simplified to ensure uniformity across discrete components. Similar to the first progression, abstractions were combined in pairs. When binders were required, corresponding modifications were made to the abstractions.
The summarized matrix is presented below, delineating the probe’s components in stationary, partial slide, and full slide configurations. The chosen joinery, incorporating both slits and slots, is categorized accordingly for a more detailed analysis.

Through adjustments, three distinct living space types were created by blending elements from abstraction 1 and 2, providing occupants with diverse options. One-bedroom units offer essential living spaces, two-bedroom units include a study room, and three-bedroom units feature a tea room. Subsequently, these units were combined according to established samples. The top-left corner of Figure 1 illustrates a seamless connection between two two-bedroom units and one-bedroom units, achieved by abstracting discrete components. In instances where a direct connection is not possible, binders are introduced, akin to a mezzanine level connection. The horizontal axis, symbolizing connections between similar levels, underwent an abstraction process and the addition of binder connections. The strategy for unit placement evolved from a thorough analysis of the site context, with Kampong Kapor Road identified as a central backbone. This recognition influenced the centralization of core circulation elements along main pathways, which also serve as gathering points for residents. At the site level, the deliberate recess of the first-floor perimeter facilitates public circulation, complemented by a diagonal shortcut in response to the existing path line. The entrance, strategically positioned at this corner facing Kampong Kapor Road and Rowell Road, creates a meaningful intersection, encouraging connection with the public realm. 10

These floor plans depict diverse aggregation strategies on different levels, emphasizing visual connections through void openings. The rear elevation features intentional porosity for panoramic views, fostering a connection between residents and the surroundings. Additionally, the front elevation’s strategic use of shadow enhances the interplay of light and shadow, contributing to cooler areas within the building’s design.

Within these interior perspective views, a narrative unfolds as we observe the seamless journey of residents. The progression is evident, starting from the more confined units and gracefully leading towards the central core. This deliberate spatial arrangement not only prioritizes efficient circulation but also fosters a sense of interconnectedness within the living environment.

In another compelling view, residents are actively engaged in refurbishing the green communal space nestled between the units. This dynamic scene not only breathes life into the surrounding environment but also emphasizes the importance of communal interaction and shared green spaces.
Lastly this is the hero sectional perspective, illustrating the integration and cohesion between the units. In summary, the overarching goal of Slit and Slot is to provide a secure environment where residents can come together, learn, and thrive within their living spaces. Slits and slots aspire to establish a secure haven for residents, encouraging them to forge connections, learn from one another as they circulate along the journey that unfolds diverse moments and stories and collectively grow within the shared living spaces. The project’s vision is to not only provide shelter but to actively contribute to the rebuilding of a strong sense of community within Kampong Kapor through the artistry of joineries.
