THE SLITS & SLOTS
AGGREGATION, STRUCTURE AND SPACE The Slit and Slot is a five-story residential building, meticulously crafted using a combination of rabbet and dado joinery. Originating from a concept inspired by tongue and groove joinery, a probe was developed to explore the tactile qualities and scalability of the structure. This initial probe was then abstracted and expanded into a series of progressions, ultimately forming the basis for the creation of individual living units. Each unit is carefully curated through the expansion and combination of sample aggregations. When considered in relation to its site, this vertical dwelling is purposefully designed to enhance connectivity among the residents of Kampong Kapor. The intention is to revive the communal spirit that was lost due to a tragic fire. Commemorating the village community, the building incorporates communal and linkage spaces to foster intimacy among residents. Featuring various unit types derived from sample aggregations, the Slit and Slot enables residents to connect with neighbors from diverse backgrounds. The diverse unit types cater to different spatial needs, ensuring that the building serves various groups of residents. All in all, the overarching goal of Slit and Slot is to provide a secure environment where residents can come together, learn, and thrive within their living spaces.

THE SANCTUARY
FINAL YEAR PROJECT , Year 3 PROJECT BACKGROUND Akin to many other countries, Singapore's artisanal crafts have lost its importance and relevance in its society. The culture of recreating and populating local crafters has succumbed to the rise of mass production and less interest in this field. Unlike other growing careers, artisan crafters were not seen as deceiving careers due to the lack of exposure, research and limited resources. In addition, Local crafts unfold the past which was filled with culture, stories, people which represent Singapore's culture and civilization. Artisanal crafts should be celebrated as a form of art and revitalized by the current generation to preserve the knowledge and skills that belong to the past and to revitalize new crafts for the future. DESIGN STRATEGY Located in the heart of Chinatown, The Sanctuary invites and offers a prime opportunity for surrounding aspiring craftsmen to nurture and bequeath their skills to passionate learners. This school aims to create a conducive environment for crafters to recreate, revitalize and reignite the making of local crafts. By blurring the boundaries between different learning stakeholders and programmatic spaces, The Sanctuary redefines the learning approach for artisans. Certainly, this school emphasized traditional practices to prevent contemporary practices from completely eradicating local crafts businesses. Similar to Renzo piano's intention, Centre Pompidou expressed that spaces are no longer defined by a role or function whereby spaces can be programmable. Throughout this sanctuary, both public and private spaces encourage collaborative working in an environment that is inherently creative. The symbiosis relationship is established between showcasing and making of crafts through the learning heart and the perimeter learning spaces, enabling students to grow in a better exploratory and inhibited school.

The Effervescence
MILL COMPETITION- ONE HOLLAND V Holland Village has always been about community. Thambi Magazine and Khiam Teck, the generational businesses, take pride in their history, but they're feeling the impact of fewer customers, especially since Covid-19. Remember the times before the pandemic? When we used to enjoy the outdoors and connect with our community like family? That's what Holland Village used to be—a familiar memory. Effervescence wants people to relax and reconnect in RE-space, bridging the gap between the past and present for Holland Village residents. Effervescence aims to bring back memories of childhood and the community spirit that defined the village. Our concept isn't just for those who remember the old days but for everyone, new or old to the area. We believe understanding and remembering the past is important because it shapes the present and helps us appreciate where we come from.
Effervescence has had the privilege of embarking on a journey, hearing and understanding the stories that have built up Holland Village to the place that it is today. There is comfort in knowing that the memories of the past are not lost and that our current generation can reconnect to what was before. We see the potential in RE, to become an avenue that will bridge the gap between people of different generations and background. We hope to welcome the residents to take rest and relive their memories, for passers-by to reconnect with those around them and to reset the culture of this generation. Looking past our time in the Covid-19 Pandemic, we cannot be desensitized to the fear of connecting with strangers. For all we know, these ‘strangers’ may become the community that we can come home to, gather with and build our lives with, once more.
