SEED BALLS

HOW TO MAKE SEED BALLS Planting seeds is a great way to have fun and help save the environment. Make some seed balls using wildflower seeds and see what happens when you throw them! Native wildflowers were part of the natural environment. Sometimes people remove them to plant other flowers that look better, but don’t belong there. By planting these seeds, you can help to restore the natural ecosystem. This will make the insects, birds and the soil much happier.

WHAT YOU NEED • • • • • • •

1/2 oz (1Tbs) native wildflower seeds. 3 1/2 oz (7 Tbs) dry, organic potting soil 1 1/2 oz (3 Tbs) dry clay Water A mixing bowl A cookie sheet for drying the seed balls Wax paper

soil, and water into a well-blended paste. 5

When you are able to form a ball of the blended material without it falling apart, you are ready to stop mixing.

6

Mould the mixture into small (~1 inch diameter) balls and place cookie sheet or tray with wax paper. You should have 8 to 10 balls.

7

3

Allow balls to dry in the sun for at least one day.

NOW THAT I HAVE MADE SEED BALLS, WHAT DO I DO WITH THEM?

All you have to do is throw them at a patch of dirt and watch it explode! Once it rains (or you water them), they have everything they need to grow. They also make great gifts! Put them in a plastic bag and give them to all your friends.

The Greenhouse Effect Around the Earth, there is a layer of air called the atmosphere. When humans cut down trees or cause pollution, this sends harmful gases like Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. These are called greenhouse gases.

Pollution from factories is poisoning the air

April Issue 1 2015

DISCOVER

During the day, the sun heats up the earth. At night, the earth cools down and the warm air goes back into the atmosphere. But the greenhouse gases trap some of the heat. This makes the Earth very hot. The more we pollute the air, the hotter it will get.

DISCOVER

Many polar bears are dying because of the Greenhouse Effect. The warm air is melting the ice where they live.

Sadly, many people are cutting down trees.

What can we do?

Trees absorb CO2 so, if we plant more trees we can save the atmosphere.

SUSTAINABILITY

What is Sustainability? Can you say this word?

Sus – tain – abil – ity Whew! It’s a long word, but it’s REALLY important! If something is sustainable it should last forever.

Our planet Earth is a beautiful place. It used to look really different hundreds of years ago. There were a lot more animals, trees and water. All of these things that we need to survive are running out and in the future, they may be lost forever. April Issue 1 2015

| 16

www.ziwira.com

Few hundred years ago, our planet looked different with more animals, water and trees.

SUSTAINABILITY

BEFORE

AFTER

Here’s Why: People are killing animals for food, clothing or jewelry People waste food and water every day

Only 5 white rhinos are left in the world

Trees are cut down to make space for buildings and farms There is too much pollution in the air, oceans and on the land Sustainability means looking after each other and our planet. It means living in a way that keeps humans, animals and nature healthy. Sustainability means helping our earth to last for a long, long time! Imagine if we had no more trees or no more water in the oceans? What would that be like?

SUSTAINABILITY

BE A

! O R E H R E P

SU Here’s how you can help save the Earth: - Never waste food or water. - Plant as many trees as you can. - Eat healthy, organic food. - Never harm animals. - Don’t throw your paper or plastic away. Collect it all in a box and ask a grown up to take it to the recycling bin. - Tell all your friends to be SUSTAINABLE!

Recycle paper + Save the trees

Recycle plastic + Save the ocean

RECYCLING

Do you know what that means? When you recycle, you turn old things into new ones so you don’t harm the earth.

Hello kids! My name is Earth Boy and I love to recycle!

EARTH BOY

I love to collect empty toilet rolls, then I paint them or color them and make new toys like these binoculars. March Issue 1 2015

www.ziwira.com

Why is it good to recycle? Most dirt goes to a huge rubbish landfill. There is so much dirt in the landfills, that it is poisoning the air. Some of the dirt gets thrown on the ground or goes into the ocean or the forests and harms the animals who live there. This is called pollution. Pollution is really bad for the environment.

Paper is made from trees, so if we recycle paper, we don’t have to cut down so many trees. Plastic is made in factories that send harmful gases into the air and makes us sick. So, if we recycle plastic, the factories don’t have to make so much and our air will be cleaner.

The tiger is the largest wild cat in the world. They vary in size and color depending on where they live.

Tigers are an endangered species. This means that if we don’t save them, there will be no tigers left in the future. There are 3,200 tigers in the world.

PARTY TIGERS TIME

Each tiger has a unique black striped pattern on its fur that goes skin deep.

Tigers can live in different habitats. Some live in snow and others live in tropical rainforests.

Tigers like to live and hunt alone. They usually hunt in the dark.

Like most cats, tigers love the water and are very good swimmers

Poachers are people who kill tigers to sell their fur. This is against the law. Humans have also destroyed many of the tigers’ habitats.

A baby tiger is called a cub. Cubs are blind when they are born.

PARENTS PARTY + TIME TEACHERS

GREEN LOVE A note for parents and teachers There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing a child become excited about something good. Ziwira Kids is aimed at doing just that. We want to excite them about sustainability, and that should also be the starting point for teachers and parents. Use this magazine as a guideline and springboard to start communication and action towards sustainable living amongst children. After all, they are the ones to whom we pass the baton when our work on this earth is done. If we grow them green from the root up, sustainable living will come naturally to them. While most of the text is written in a simple style so that older kids can navigate through it themselves, it is recommended that you read it with them, explaining as you go along. The activities can be repeated more than once to see how much they remember from the first time. March Issue 1 2015

www.ziwira.com

1. Lead by example – Curiosity conquers! If the little ones see you separating the rubbish, they will naturally want to know why and will definitely want to join in. 2. Make it fun – Explaining or barking instructions will turn off their receptors. Rather turn it into a game or tell a story using funny voices. 3. Get kids involved – Mums are always paranoid about mess, but it can be a great learning tool. Let them dig in and plant something themselves. The sense of accomplishment will make them appreciate and remember the experience. 4. Read to them – When choosing reading material for the home or classroom, choose books that have a theme of sustainability e.g. recycling, learning about nature, extinct animals etc. 5. Volunteer with your kids – If you make it a habit of taking food scraps to the local animal shelter or volunteer for that beach clean-up and tag the kids along with you,

Safari Ostrich Farm, established in

they will learn to think of it as an exciting event and are likely to continue the tradition 1956, welcomes you to the ostrich capital of the world...
