It is a trending spatial organisation method recently. 4 It maintains the simplicity of the visiting routine. However, it requires the visitors to get in and out from exhibition 5rooms. This eliminates the requirement of the relevance of each room. It also provides breaks for visitors.

1910 Sea Baths 1912 Luna Park 1927 Palais Theatre
Historical Influence St Kilda in the 1920s has defined itself through the erection of a pleasure land which was full filled with entertainment. The Palais Theatre and Luna Park symbolized the vibrancy of the site. Memories of St Kilda was captured at those moments. It prompts me to question:
Design Statement 2018 St Kilda Channel Surfing 33
What are moments What arethe the moments define St in the thatthat define StKilda Kilda in the Modern Age? Modern Age?
How wouldour our future How would future generation remember St Kilda generation remember St Kilda? in the 21st Century?
34 St Kilda Channel Surfing 2018 Design Statement
Memory vs. Reality Peter Zumthor described architectural spaces with his senses. It was evident that people’s memories are shaped by their knowledge and senses. Interestingly, memories are often not exactly the same as the reality. One remembers moments instead of an entire space experience. In this case, our memories are those key moments together with own imaginations.
Design Statement 2018 St Kilda Channel Surfing 35
People’s memory can be deconstructed into moments or serials of scenes. Creating memories will be compositing those moments and create gaps to allow imaginations.
36 St Kilda Channel Surfing 2018 Design Statement
Fragmentation and Chaotic Learning from the modern gallery spatial organization, I have realized that fragmented spaces with least rule or order coordinate better with modern metropolitan lives. St Kilda triangle should be a place of joy and freedom.
Design Statement 2018 St Kilda Channel Surfing 37
The design approach of galleries can be applied to the entire site. Individual built forms will not have direct connections between one and other, but it will create attractions between the spaces to encourage people to navigate.
38 St Kilda Channel Surfing 2018 Design Statement
Past and Future The project aims to recap the iconic scenes and redefine the local culture through the architectural space. It will maintain and strengthen the locality and inter-relationships of landmarks in the context. Without disturbing the site culture, it will build on the entertainment features of St Kilda through its spatial quality and formation process. The project will represent the featured elements on site into a playful approach to create delight memories.
The featured elements include:
the classical architectural language of dome or arches, the astonishing view of Esplanade, the amusing fluctuation of the Luna Park roller coaster and the culture of bathing.
Design Statement 2018 St Kilda Channel Surfing 39
Dome and Baroque Interior spaces of the project will be formed a dome system and the spaces will be reflected on the building faรงade according to their functions. The system maximizes the benefit of panorama effect of exhibition spaces and creates dynamic interior rooftop for public spaces.
View Built forms create pathways for permeability as well as providing visual focus to frame the views towards the beach, the Palais, Luna Park and the Pier.
Roller Coaster The exaggerated roof variation will stimulate the three dimensional movement of the roller coaster. This allows more people to enjoy the entertainment of movement in space.
Bathing The easy access hot pool provides a similar experience of bathing in the sea. In this case, the leisure will not be affected by weather conditions.
40 St Kilda Channel Surfing 2018 Design Statement
Digital Art In ‘Culture of Congestion’, Rem Koolhaas attacks the problem of pleasure with same technological means without the seriousness. The gallery spaces should be promoting contemporary digital art in addition to traditional physical artworks. ACMI and Digital Gallery provides wide space which allows isolated VR experience or AR display. Such spaces could be customized to fit different scales and format of exhibitions. It then brings in new art forms to keep activating the site.
Design Statement 2018 St Kilda Channel Surfing 41
The project converts conventional elements of the original site to a land of amusement which is an extension of the memorable St Kilda features. The site allows a highly free circulation which allows people to determine their own experience and generate individual memory of the site. While building a unique experience of the gallery spaces, people will rethink about architectural entertainment from a contemporary perspective. It will turn the dull carpark into a vigorous and energetic communal space. The memory of St Kilda in 21st Century will be formed by the new interpretation of the existing site features. The new spaces incorporate a group form which allows people to select their preferred elements to create a customized memory by their self-determined visiting routines.

Dome space system Basic composition The domes fit in to the column grid, overlapping two different sizes dome without disrupting the columns.
Connected composition The domes touches the edge of a conventional column, four intersecting domes form connected spaces.
Open composition Open space may remove every second column of the structure, the dome uses the second column as space center which creates more fluent space.

Dancing House
by Frank Gehry
The distorted cylinda glass house demonstrates the wildness of the built form. The joint connections are well designed to allow the glass panels to form curvatures. It demonstrated the advancement in technology in the 1990s. It remains some elements from the surround buildings, but it stands out because of the distortion.
Brisbane Airport Kinetic Parking Garage Faรงade
by Ned Kahn and UAP
The facade is distorted to mimic the effect of wind breeze. The creases of the facade capture a moment of the movement. The building skin stirs a sense of dynamicity with a still form.
Distortion Built form can be developed from a common geometry to something unusual. Instead of randomly change the geometires, such design approach allows architecture to emphasise its visual effects or to improve its function and programme.

The folds are implemented to weaken the boundaries between walls. floors and ceilings. They create more interesting interalationships between different programme.
The Wave Vejle
In
by Rem Koolhaas
A continuous surface is created by the folds. Folding the roof suddenly forms a volume without building walls. It also preserves the views from the context partially. The residents are allowed to enjoy better views and natural light in this case comparing to a slab built form at the waterfront.
Folding Volumetric space can be created when folding a sheet material. It creates richful vertical interactions with reduced amount of surfaces. Folding adds complexity to the built form compare to a single box. Folds can be rigid or curved to illustrate different atmosphere of space.

The negative space of the built form emphasises the role of voids. It create connections between different programme as they share the void space.
Sydney House
Opera
by Jorn Utzon The architecture is formed by cut outs of a sphere. It created the well designed curvature of the built form.
Positive and Negative The positive and negative spaces result in rational space and geometries. It emphasizes on the space relationships, especially between occupied and void spaces.

Munich East Railway Station by MVRDV
The building introduces a sense of amusement through the neon lights and colour contrast. It creates astonishing visual imacts.
Marina Bay Sands by Moshe Safdie
The architecture stands out from its context. The gesture of the form create an iconic image of city.
Supergraphic Supergraphic is often associated with visual impacts. It brings attention to the built form. It can also be seen as a collaboration of architecture and other art forms. The use of color and geometry will be drawing people’s attension.
88 St Kilda Channel Surfing 2018 Appendix

The interlocking timber sticks adds depth to the architectural skin. The boundary of exterior and interior is blurred to create a transitional experience.
Serpentine Pavilion by Sou Fujimoto
The installation space is defined by the frame on horizontal and vertical planes. The density of the frame demonstate the dominated space by the architecture.
Blur The blur adds softness to architecture. It is more likely to be generated by a thick envelope in order to introduce the blurred effect. It often allow people to see and experience a transition from void space to solid space.

F. Interim Proposal
166 St Kilda Channel Surfing 2018 Appendix
Development stagnation of St Kilda is urging new energy. It plays an important role in Melbournians’ memory. However, the place seems to be unchanged for few decades. What kind of memories could define our modern world of 21st Century? Everyone may have their own interpretations. The project aims to recap the iconic scenes and redefine the local culture through the architectural space. It will maintain and strengthen the locality and inter-relationships of landmarks in the context. Without disturbing the site culture, it will build on the entertainment features of St Kilda through its spatial quality and formation process. The site is identified as a place full of entertainment. The multifunctional architecture intends to emphasize on the feature of St Kilda. How could architecture space be generated in a more playful manner? The new gallery could use an artistic and mischevious approach to articulate the spaces. While building a unique experience of the gallery spaces, people will rethink about architectural entertainment from a contemporary perspective. It will turn the dull carpark into a vigorous and energetic communal space.
