THE ROOM OF REQUIREMENT IN THE NAME OF ROSE MANIFESTO IDEOGRAM I ON THE BEACH 1959 WINGS OF DESIRE MATERIAL STUDY ATMOSPHERE IDEOGRAM II EXHIBITION SPACE DESERTED MELBOURNE

1.1 THE ROOM OF REQUIREMENT The library on the border, the border line split the library into two parts but still exists as a whole. It witnessed everything happened, war, love, farewell, yesterday, today and it will also record tomorrow, future. Library exists for some reason, it’s not only a place for books but also a place contains history, contains us. Our experiences in the library also been recorded and stored. When you read the same book in different ages, that feeling will emerge. Library will not be ‘destroyed’ by anything, it is a permanent shelter for us, a treasure for us all.

1.2 THE ROOM OF REQUIREMENT In Richard Brautigan’s novel “The Adoration”, he imagines a library where regular people can come and drop off their own unpublished books. “Nothing is turned away”. Everyone has their dreams, their stories. Everything behind those books will be a person, no matter their ages, their experiences or their genders. Library exists for those people, recorded and stored their life stories. Library provides the space and we use it, share it, read it. When we have a chance to read others’ life, we are finding ourselves on it, finding that reflection.

2.1 IN THE NAME OF ROSE Sections and plans are the most beautiful drawings for architects. They contains circulations, drive the people inside the building. For the library, the circulation become a more interesting journey for the visitor, they read and walk. Moving around in the library was like walking into a track which connects with each other. Staircase is not only a tool for climbing up but also a metaphor of unlimited possibilities. It leads us go deeper and deeper. Standing on the stairs, we look around as choosing the directions. To the past or to the future.

2.2 IN THE NAME OF ROSE “Books are not made to be believed, but to be subjected to inquiry. When we consider a book, we mustn’t ask ourselves what it says but what it means...” Quoted. Library is a place guides us, answers us and more like a place hold us and gives us meanings. Why do we exist, how do we exit. Library works as a conveyor, it transfer information generation by generation, we find truth on books, we find ourselves in the library. We exploding in it, finding the answer, finding the truth which been buried for a long time. It was a paradox, a learning process, a sublimate process.

3.1 MANIFESTO The library, the paradox, the seamless circulation, the endless journey. We all trying to find the definition of understanding things. But sometimes forget to let things define us. Close one eye, travel light years, library still there. A place exists in the river of history. We lost, find a way and lost again. We see each other in the rooms read the same book, feel the same way. We sit on the same boat, traveling through the library, sometimes we confused, we helpless, we try so hard to get away from these waves. We speak for ourselves. Things cannot be seen through can be resolved here. Through books, we find answers, find connection, find definition. Listen to the sound from the earth, spread it, enlarge it, transmit it. It will last forever.

4.1 IDEOGRAM I Library with voids, the rooms are facing with each other with a glance of the outside views. Sunlight coming into the atrium, light up the space. The library sit in the heart of the city, in the Chinatown. There are no trees along the street, the palm trees on each other light up the place as a green box. Surrounded by apartment buildings and restaurants. The library needs something to define itself. The ground floor become a level to welcome people into the space, two main entrances facing the street to allow public movement.

4.2 ON THE BEACH 1959 The nuclear fallout conflict has devastated the entirety of the Northern Hemisphere, almost all the people died there. The people who escaped from this start thinking the real meaning of life, the mistakes, the truth. This was a decent way of ending the world, there are no explosions, ruins, and riots. But everything is extremely desperate, the biggest highlight of this film, the old waiters in the clubs start to play billiards by themselves. The saddest things is not the appearance of the last world, but the absurdity and despair of going into death without doing anything we can do to.

5.1 WINGS OF DESIRE LIBRARY SCENE Library provide a space for people to think, imagine and learn. There are so many connections between everything in this space. They are untouchable and unforeseen but really exist. Walking through each levels, close your eyes, let that force push you up. Swimming in the mind flow of others, creating the new attachments for them.

5.1 WINGS OF DESIRE LIBRARY SCENE Standing in front of the library, looking up or down, past or future. Sitting at the corner, running your mind through the book shelves. Finding your desire, connecting with the past, thinking of the next. Imagining that your thinking crashed with others, the answers always hit you at that moment. Every time you walk into the library, it is like build a monument.

5.1 WINGS OF DESIRE LIBRARY SCENE Related to my library, I planned to design a gap between the book shelves and the reading area. Lean against the white steel balustrade, watching people walk through the shelves choosing the books. The other side, people reading quietly or writing something. The atrium provide a ‘space’ for air circulation and also a ‘space’ for thinking and watching.

6.1 MATERIAL STUDY The external of the wall cladding are designed to use the precast concrete panels which is easy and efficient to build and install. There are also some glass facade parts on both sides. For the interior space, there are mainly painted to white. The supporting load bearing columns will be also pre-casted. The white steel balustrade match the overall white color and the timber shading for the staircase gives the library a natural feeling together with the plants outside.

7.1 ATMOSPHERE STUDY This is a reading room on Level five for the youth. You can see the green space in between the reading rooms. The room at the building corner has solid walls facing streets to limit the distraction from the outside. The green space in between make the room live, make the people inside feel not so much in a closed space but actually involved into the garden space when they are reading in these rooms.

7.1 ATMOSPHERE STUDY Another view from the reading room on this level. The staircase in the middle not only connects two levels but also provides a sitting area with the small tables. These staircases are intersect with each other look from above, they connected the reading area with the book collections. Like a conveyor for the visitors finding and reading, walking up to the next level. Sufficient sunlight will coming from the atrium roof.

8.1 IDEOGRAM II I changed the spiral ramp to these staircases connect each floors like a paradox circulation. They intersect with each other, connecting the reading area with the book collections. People sitting in the middle, passing by can be seen from everywhere in the library. These staircase provides a seamless visual connection with other area of the library. Through the green space in the middle, through the atrium, through the voids, we ‘see’ each other.

9.1 EXHIBITION SPACE 2D Drawing showing in a 3D Rendered area in my library. A creative way of presenting.

10.1 DESERTED MELBOURNE Sunday afternoon, Melbourne, Lonsdale Street, after the radiation. The dead silence around. When reach the end of the world, I wish I can say I loved for once.
