PROJECT 2: THE LIBRARY AND THE CITY The library brings people from everywhere in the city to this specific location. And generates a small scale city inside it with its own network. None of us live on a lonely island. When you walk into the library, you will definitely find a unique space.

The main library space is dominated by the central spiral ramp which connects the floors together and each floor is divided into several small rooms. These different size rooms somehow reflect the randomness of the things existing in the city and the difference between each visitors.

“Round sky and square earth” is a basic concept in the tradition of ancient Chinese geography. So that’s why I create this building form with the square base and a circular opening on the top. Another point is about the green space of the library. I put the green space not on the street level but up to the air. It will make people inside the library feel not so much in a closed room but actually involved into the green space. And this also brings a sense of natural to the Chinatown, to the city.
