Specialised Business
MOTA-ENGIL ENGENHARIA PREFABRICADOS Background The company that originated the Precast Department of MotaEngil Engenharia was Maprel. Maprel was founded in 1960 in order to produce beams for building' slabs. In the early 80s, Maprel launched the production of the Box-Culvert. Maprel was acquired by Mota & Companhia in 1987. In 2002, the companies Mota & Companhia and Engil merged and gave rise to Mota-Engil, the largest construction company in Portugal. In early 2012, all the construction-related companies of the group were incorporated in the parent company Mota-Engil Engenharia.
Production Plants Our Precast Concrete Solutions area studies, designs and manufactures fast, effective and economical solutions aiming at quick implementation at the work site. With two plants, Nelas (center of Portugal) and Rio Maior (50 km from Lisbon), a manufacturing capacity of some 200 m3/day is ensured for precast concrete products. The first plant is prepared for manufacturing different types of pretensioning beams ( “I”,”U”, “T” and Slab beams) thus responding to any possible needs from the client.
PRECAST CONCRETE PRODUCTS With a rather encompassing operation, including facades for buildings, bridges, viaducts, tunnels, among other solutions and a recognized and obvious technical and productive capacity make Mota-Engil Engenharia Prefabricados the market leader and a success case in the precast industry in Portugal.
I-beams, U-beams and T-beams With an installed capacity of 650 m of prestressing line, Mota-Engil is the largest producer of prestressed beams in Portugal.
In recent years, it produced over 120 km of precast beams. Our range varies from smaller beams of 0.30 m high, up to 2.60 m, 230 t and 45 m long beams.
I-beams This beam type provides a wide variability of solutions. It is one of the most widely used products for the construction of bridge platforms.
U-beams These beams are used to overcome considerable gaps and are commonly used in large viaducts. The largest U-beam implemented in Portugal was manufactured in the plant of Nelas, with a span of 44 m and an approximate weight of 138 t.
T-beams This beam type has a major advantage of not requiring precast slabs for building the platform.

Beams - Solution for pedestrian crossings Pedestrian crossing overpasses are constituted by prestressed beams (usually I-beams or U-beams), specific pillars and ramp or stairway elements; all of these prefabricated components are made of reinforced concrete. The ramps may be planned to have different slopes and forms. Only the foundations for the construction of this kind of crossing shall be made "in situ".
