COLLECTIVE LIVING
Title: ‚NEUE VAHR SÜDOST‘: Developing post-warmodernist housebuilding further[...]The main idea is to further develop housing areas from post-war times in an areal and social context. There are various ways of solving the problems present, such as restructuring, additional building and expansion. Developing differentiated adjecent living possibilities and social care for diverse needs (barrier-free building, geriatric care facilities) is of great importance. Crossgenerational concepts accounting to a range of target groups and acting against tendencies of segregation are appreciated[...] Sourc e:GEWOBA-School of Architecture Bremen

ISOLATION VS. CONNECTION SITUATION INTENTION ORIENTATION
The typical functionalistic alignment from When houses are situated frontal towards each other, east to west hinders random encounters dialogue between buildings and people can take place.
DISTANCE
This assignment questioned me how these living areas function in general. During my research, I came across Jan Gehl‘s ‚Life between buildings – Using public space‘ (2011). In his work he presented the philosophy ‚that life between buildings seems to be in almost all situations more essential and relevant than the spaces and houses themselves‘. I looked into the most common characteristics of these areas and discovered that a functionalism architecture is typical. After WWII, the city of Bremen tried to create newer and more attractive living space. Therefore, the architects of “Neue Vahr” followed the functionalism philosophy of the 30s. ‚Apartments should offer enough air, sun, aeration and access to open spaces for the residents.‘ Unfortunately this concept was not executed successfully, since recent studies show that residents do not feel safe and comfortable in “Neue Vahr”. The life in the neighbourhood has become more anonymous and little interaction takes place due to a shortage of commonly shared places. How can this problem be solved?
‚In cities and construction projects with narrow streets and little open space, houses and people are experienced as quite intense. Also, they appear highly intimate, warm and personal. In contrast to that, areas with many open spaces, wide streets and tall buildings are perceived to be cold and clinical‘ (Gehl, 2011)
AREA
‚Functionalism was an explicitely physically and materially oriented planning ideology. One of its most notable effects were that streets and open spaces vanished from newer construction and city projects. (Gehl, 2011)
COMMAND STRUCTURE
The necessity of creating divisions and groups in order to allow democratic processes becomes apparent at the workplace, in associations and at schools and universities. The structure reflects levels of decision making and serves as guidance in social and professional settings. (Gehl, 2011)
URBAN REVISION
STEP 1 The area is structured in such a way that it shows an alignment from south to north, the stilthouses allow for a direct view from north to south. The new site development divides the area up into smaller parts. Through that, residents and visitors are ‚pulled into‘ the arrangement.
STEP 2 New buildings in the south. Through these measures, two of the previously mentioned problems identified by the IfS can be resolved. Residents complained about the noise and missing parking spots in Neue Vahr, which is why the recently constructed buildings should be used exclusively as car parks. Aside from that, the new buildings form a courtyard.
STEP 3 Reacting to some sociological predictions, spacecreating measures will be taken. In order to create more courtyards, existing buildings will be altered and new buildings will be constructed. The structure of the living area will be redefined, so that a hierarchy between public, semi-public and private spaces develops. The buildings located in the northern part of the area will be reconstructed as single-occupancy and OAP-suitable homes.
This step deals with the problems at hand without requiring major changes, such as the removal of the eight-story buildings. Through purposeful implementation of new buildings and site development, the area will be divided into several parts. Thus, public, semi-public and private zones are created. The residents can join one of the living-groups which serves as a measure to generate identity. This urban development draft makes it possible to form the recently gained semi-public spaces into courtyards. Something that might function as a playground for children – a possibility to occupy themselves until their next activity starts – could simply used as a garden where gardening can be done. A more in depth study shows, that gardening only serves the purpose of spending time outside. In addition, conditions should allow smaller day-to-day activities to be completed in public spaces, such as reparations, hobbies and meals. Source: Gehl, 2011

LAYERS OF VENICE Artemide Lighthouse Competition Venice tells us the story of disappearance. It is probably the most radical interpretation of ‘city’ and one that has remained untouched by the parameters of today’s globalised world. Our conventional system and the perception of ‘city’ are characterised by traffic, orientation through man-made signs and acceleration. Venice is the very opposite of this. This paradigm shift from land to water can be best appreciated at the crossings and entrances to the city. While Venice’s original entrance at St Mark’s Square is wonderfully crafted, […] today’s entrance has shifted to […] the Piazzale Roma […] and [...] the Santa Lucia station. […] The entrance to the city is so to speak through an undesigned backyard. […] The city must be considered as a stage where the light becomes a medium able to relate man, architecture and space/urban spaces, transforming them into places. A sustainable light can stimulate new
awarenesses, identities and environmental qualities, enabling connections and following the rhythms of man and nature. In doing so, entrants can propose solutions either for just one place (the Piazzale Roma or Santa Lucia with the station) or select the two places together in their spatial context. The desired outcome is to have works which move within the area bordering staging, art and architecture. The city space and its scenographic potential are therefore areas of emphasis in this competition. source: http://www.lighthouse-competition.com/
I have chosen the train station as my subject. Visitors will be led from the train to the top of the stairs, from where one has a great view over Venice and the main square. Attendants will be sucked into the city and bedazzled by Venice‘s inimitable flair.
FACES OF VENICE Venice is a one of a kind place. Many are allured by its charm and fall under its spell. The run-down facades make the city seem old and fragile. Just like a tree, its different layers tell Venice‘s history. From a town that was founded by desperate people it developed into the greatest trading junction of the fifteenth century, then it became the lost city, which even now evokes long forgotten desires. Old stories and secrets surface. And yet, many of Venice‘s visitors choose to ignore them. The square in front of the train station will be transformed into a collage of the appearance of Venice. Additionally, the city‘s faces and history will be portrayed. The attendee should be immediately able to experience Venice‘s flair.
The train station poses as a play with levels both in appearance and cut. I will utilise this layering for my collage. The plan will be connected to the train station right from the start, so that visitors find themselves within the temporary draft. Two parameters have been chosen to limit the plan, with the width of the stairs constituting one and the seaside constituting the opposite one. Thus, a person walking along the waterfront really lives the concept.
The many appearances of Venice are incorporated into my concept. I concentrated on the three most important images of the city. The staged, the hidden and the future Venice. Venice has stopped being a functioning town, since gentrification stops at nothing. Extremely high costs-of-living and too many tourists replace natives. Like a staged play, tourists are sold on the concept of ‚Venice‘.Venice is a mystic place, that can never be completely understood by visitors. There are quite a few hidden treasures a tourist will never get to see. One of them is the secret green lung of Venice. Gardens are very rare in the city, since building areas are valuable and planting conditions are bad, therefore garden owners treasure them greatly. Visitors should experience the few oasis within the city.

Water shapes the appearance of Venice. It frames the city and has protected Venice from enemies for centuries. Now, the ocean itself poses a threat, since rising sea levels may destroy the town in the near future. But because water is an important symbol for Venice, visitors should nevertheless experience it.
CONCEPT Secret Gardens: This level lies in the shadows, just beneath the other two. A break in the ground exposes the gardens, which are not accessible. Visitors can approach them and linger around them, recover from the long journey or enjoy the view on Venice. Purposefully directed light illuminates the secret. The platform: The second level is an extension of the train station. Like a stage it stretches across the square and functions as a protective layer for the levels below it. The view is directed at the venitian spectacle. This level can be understood as yet another public space for interaction between Venetians and tourists. The perforated material the level is made of, represents the fragility of the place and offers insights into the events going on beneath it.

A play on water: The future of Venice above us. A play on water is installed in order to make the imminent threat perceivable. There will be a structure printed on the roof that is similar to water. Thus, light will be dispersed in such a way that the illusion of water in the room is created. The thereby generated atmosphere is supposed to grant visitors insight into Venice‘s future.
Geheime Gärten: Liegen im Schatten und werden durch gezieltes Licht beleuchtet. Die Gärten sind nicht begehbar, sondern können nur von außen erahnt werden. Durch die obere perforierte Ebene entsteht ein Schattenspiel.
PLANS Light as a symbol of connection All layers are illuminated. The square is formed also through the lanterns, which are incorporated into the plan in order to accommodate to the temporary character of the competition. A designed skin around them makes them glow in a new light. Also, the second level and the roof can be carried this way. The Sendai Media Centre by Toyo Ito serves as a model for construction.

REMEMBER QUARTER
AND
MEMORY-Shanghai
JEWISH
This urban design arose during a 2-week workshop in Shanghai 2011. Our task was to analyse the Hongkou area. We should find possible solutions to the social, cultural and urban problems. Around 1938, many Jews from Germany and Austria found a place of refuge in Shanghai. 1937, Shanghai was lost to the Japanese empery, there was still no official right of entry. The Jewish people just needed a visa to leave the country. The Chinese consul general in Vienna awarded the required visas around 1938 and 1940. The Japanese confiscated belongings of the arrivals. As well they hanged a curfew, the ghetto could only be left with a permit. The Japanese authorities were surprised by the large number of immigrants, hence the refugees had to cope with inhumane and difficult living conditions.10 people lived in one room. There was hardly any food. The hygienic conditions were catastrophic. The local Chinese citizens had also to fight with these living conditions. The immigrants were able to build a community in the ghetto, beside the difficult living conditions. In the narrow streets of the ghetto a vibrant culture with shops, theatres and schools rose. Form now on the ghetto was called „Little Vienna“. Almost 80 years after the second world war, there are lived nearly none of the immigrants in Shanghai. Today the former ghetto is now known as Honkou. The district is known for cheap rents, where mainly Chinese people live, who have moved from the countryside to the city. The area is very high populated and there is lack of space. Therefore the residents use the streets as workspace and recreation room.

INTENTION
|
Honkou is a poor district, with a high population. The image of Honkou shows this situation. There are no open spaces and no community spaces. The street is the meeting point for the residents. The historic buildings are ruinous, the former identity „Little Vienna“ is lost. The ambition is to improve the quality of life for residents, by forming community spaces and create more space in the living area. The district should be made more attractive for visitors and the local economies should be strengthened. The history of Honkou offers a lot of controversy and shows the features of this area. The | EDUCATION || SUGGEST RETAIN || HISTORICAL || PRISON || NEW BUILDINGS | story of this area should be reflected in the image. So that important episode in the Second World War will not be forgotten. Our concept is to build new housing units at the nearby and empty area. Because of the new housing units we can dissolve the high population and the dilapidated buildings in Honkou can be demolished. With the new space we want to create public places. With structural alteration, like cut-outs in the ground floors, the hidden alleys become free for residents and visitors. In different buildings, we created recreation rooms at the first floor. The residents and visitors can interact at the new public places. The flair of „Little Vienna“ is back.

The next step was to design a monument to this historic district. There were a lot of questions. How to remember e in a right way? How can a monument communicate so much substance? How does the visitor get a lasting impression of what happened? How can we preserve the incomprehensible history of Honkou for future generations? We developed the concept „Lore“ with these questions in mind. As building area we have chosen the open area opposite of the Jewish museum. But we want to connect the project and the erstwhile Jewish synagogue.
„THE JEWS WERE PERSECUTED BY HITLER, AND THE CHINESE BY THE JAPANESE. WE COULD NOT HELP THEM, AND THEY CAN‘T HELP US. BUT WE SYMPATHIZED WITH EACH OTHER, BECAUSE WE SUFFERED THE SAME DESTINY.“ UNKNOWN
At first we dealt with the definition of the monument. Urslua Uber describes a monument as memorial. After the meaning of the Latin monere (= remember), you have to remember a person, a thing or a historical event. The function of a monument is to educate the youth. With this in mind, we are researching the history of Honkou. We wanted to understand what it means to life in times of „Little Vienna“. During the research, we found several statements from contemporary witness. These statements proved that the Jews and the Chinese lived through a similar tale of woe. During this time a special connection arised between the cultures. The journey is the destination, said Confucius. The Jewish life circle is an important symbol of the Judaism. With these two aspects we created a loop for the visitor to go. „On our journey life we go through many important stages: personal success, bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs, weddings, anniversaries, the birth of a child, the death of loved ones - all occasions to rethink our live. We stop and think about where we come from and where we are going to. In Judaism we give these moments a special weight by speaking a blessing or a prayer „. [Source: hagalil.com]

The cubature of the pavilion was developed by two axes. These axes extend over the area and provide a link from the main road to a small lane and to the museum. Furthermore the Jewish life circle is one part of our concept. After this aspect we created the cubature. One part of the pavilion is below ground and the other part is built above ground. Our other concept inside of the pavilion are the three wise monkeys, „don‘t see, don‘t hear, don‘t speak“. To each level a property and senses is written.
Also our concept provides changes for the Jewish museum. At present, the former synagogue is surrounded by buildings. The axes of the pavilion is stretched to the synagogue. The area behind the synagogue is changes into a recreation area. The intent is to make curious and allure the visitors. The museum should be relocated form a small building in the yard in an historic house. In the house from the time of „Little Vienna“, a sense of the heed of living conditions, should be created.

WINEGARDEN LOCATION
STRUCTURE IDEA
Wine as an adventure! This maxim is the ideal model of a wine garden. The vineyard is a place of pleasure and recreation and conveys a new understanding of nature. Due to global warming and limited resources the wine-growing sector must adapt to these changes. Furthermore, we must take care of our environment have to learn to live in harmony with nature. Therefore, I choose an architecture style which enhances the interaction with nature, instead of substitute the nature by architectural designs. The visitor discovers the production processes in the subterraneous level of the developed structure. Above this level, several independent fields of the structure can be reached by the visitor. These fields are used as experimental sites for new developments in viticulture as well as gardens for recreation and for the progression of small natural ecosystems. This vineyard is a place for development and for relaxation!

IDEAS
arT!sT with Cornelia Fehler
This fictional initiative Art!st was developed for the subject staged room. The fictional initiative “Art!st” is a stage for the artists of Leipzig. As Johann N. Nestroy already said: „Culture begins in the heart of every individual.“ With this ideal we create the initiative “Art!ist”. For us it was important to seize the various aspects of Leipzig and to represent the high culture of Leipzig. As exhibition space we choose untenanted industrial buildings, because of their special charm and raw charisma. Leipzig is to appear in a new light, to use the own potential. The variety of the city should be visible for everyone. The city can rediscover tourists and residents. Leipzig artist get a stage for exhibitions and all interested people get an access to the culture scene of Leipzig. To implement this idea all the artists, sponsors and interested are invited. As identifying feature we choose the “Hama Beads”. The “Hama Bead” is a single component, but when they are melting together it became an overall picture. This bead symbolized the networking of the various factory buildings in Leipzig. For the visitor, to recognized the initiative, the ”Hama Beads” are attached on the facade and are shaping the exhibition areas in the factories.
Konsum Chair with Cornelia Fehler
The “Konsum Chair” is designed as street furniture. The main idea was to live up public spaces. One often sees street furniture being used only rarely and mostly by sole individuals. This chair was designed to overcome the anonymity of the city. It is supposed to force strangers to interact, because it can only be used by combining two single pieces that are scattered around the location. At first glance they may not be clearly identifiable as seating opportunities which may raise curiosity. Once their intended purpose has been discovered, at least two people have to work together to assemble the pieces and make the chair usable. Thus, communities should be strengthened. As a result of this shared experience, people can relax on the chair. The “Konsum Chair” is also constructed in such a way that it can be extended to accommodate more than just two people.
gridCord with Cornelia Fehler
Almost everyone has struggled with tights ripping almost the first time you wear them. And yet, neither production nor disposal are very eco-friendly! Because of that, we decided to look into the subject of elongating the life span of a regular pair of tights through changing the material. Knitting has been trending for quite some time now and even the art scene has adopted this technique as a form of protest. So we came up with the idea to experiment with different types of knitting. With the help of a special device, one can knit in a way that forms the material into a round cord, which gives it more durability. There are different products for which this technique could be applicable, since the cord is exceptionally elastic and tear-resistent. We decided to make it into a bag that is adaptable to a number of situations. For instance, if the user has to carry large objects, the material stretches, whereas it can also be used for smaller items since it quickly contracts back to its original size.
Bureau with Cornelia Fehler
We experiment with the material concrete and want to create a new letterbox. But at this experiment we want to recreate a new form and meaning for the letterbox. The letterbox is used as storage. Our intension was to create a place where the post is safe, at the same time we want to form a place for the addresser to enjoy his post. A place where the addresser receives, stores, reads the post and can write a response. For this idea we used the secretary as ideal. Nowadays, many letters, although personal letters, are sent in digital form. The only post in the letter form are bills or other “unpopular post, so the walk to the letterbox is no amusement. With our new letterbox we want to return the delight for post. The walk to the letterbox should be pleasant. Because there is a place where you can enjoy the nature and where you can take time to read the post and reply the letter.
