Les lieux mythiques The Mythical places

Saint-Tropez se découvre à pied, au détour de chaque ruelle, chaque place.

Le Vieux Port The old harbour Le Vieux Port vous accueille avec ses façades de couleur ocre, ses yachts, ses voiliers de traditions et ses terrasses de café. A l’époque, la ville ne possédait pas de fortification et ce sont les maisons côté mer qui faisaient office de remparts. The old harbour, shows its houses with ochre hues, yachts and traditional ships, and terraced cafes. In those days, there were no fortifications, it was the houses themselves which stood as ramparts.

La Ponche Ancien port et quartier des pêcheurs. A l’époque, les pêcheurs tiraient leurs pointus (bateau de pêche) à terre sur la plage. Sur cette plage fut tourné «Et Dieu créa la Femme» avec Brigitte Bardot. La Ponche, was formerly a harbour and the fishermen's quarter. In those times, fishermen hauled their "pointus" (Provençal fishing boats) up on to the beach. It is on this beach that the film with Brigitte Bardot: "And God created Woman" was shot.

La Place des Lices The Place des Lices Centre de vie du village et cadre d'exception pour les marchés provençaux des mardis et samedis matin, et pour les jeux de boules de tous les après-midi. It is the centre of life in the village, and an exceptional venue for tuesday and saturday morning markets, as well as for bowl games players in the afternoon. 8

La Gendarmerie Sa façade du XIXème est la plus célèbre de France grâce à la série de films des “Gendarmes de Saint-Tropez”. Its XIXth Century façade is definitely the most famous building in France, thanks to the film «Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez».

Les incontournables culturels The major culture attractions

Le Musée de l’Annonciade Le Musée rappelle que le village a été l’un des foyers de l’avant-garde picturale du début du XXème siècle grâce à Paul Signac qui y invita de nombreux peintres : Matisse, Cross, Marquet. Le Musée rassemble des collections surprenantes autant par leur qualité que par leur homogénéité. Ses peintures de premier ordre appartiennent essentiellement aux mouvements pointilliste, nabi et fauve. Quelques artistes de l’exposition permanente : Bonnard, Braque, Cross, Derain, Duffy, Marquet, Matisse, Signac, Van Dongen, Vuillard, Camoin, Manguin, Picabia... The Annonciade Museum reminds us that the village of Saint-Tropez has been one of the most active centre of “avant-garde” painting at the beginning of the XXth Century, thanks to Paul Signac who, on board his ship l’Olympia, discovered this little fishing harbour in 1892. He fell under the spell of the place, bought a house, la Hune, which he turned into his studio and invited many other painters to join him: Cross, Matisse, Derain, Marquet. The collection displayed, ranges from 1890 to 1950 and is both of surprisingly high standard and homogeneity. The collection represents for the most part, the Pointillist, Fauvist et Nabist periods: Signac, Matisse, Cross, Bonnard, Van Dongen, Vlaminck, Derain… Place Georges Grammont. La Citadelle Fortification royale édifiée au début du XVIIème, elle demeure l’un des seuls monuments de cette ampleur sur la côte varoise. La Citadelle est un lieu incontournable à visiter, notamment pour sa vue magnifique sur le village et le Golfe de Saint-Tropez et son donjon. Listed building of historical interest. T. +33 (0)4 94 97 59 43 La Maison des Papillons Dans ce cadre typiquement tropézien, on découvre une fabuleuse sélection de toutes les espèces diurnes de France réunie par Dany Lartigue au cours de plusieurs décennies, ainsi qu’une collection de papillons exotiques. Plus de 20 000 spécimens sont rassemblés dont certains en voie d’extinction, et aujourd’hui protégés, des variétés peu connues, ou encore des spécimens rarissimes tel l’Apollon Noir du Mercantour. Histoire de Saint-Tropez

History of Saint-Tropez Quelques pages d'histoire tropézienne A few pages of Saint-Tropez History Saint-Tropez est né Caïus Silvius Torpetius, à Pise (Toscane), dans une famille patricienne. Brillant officier, il fut choisi par l’Empereur Néron comme intendant de son palais. Converti par Saint Paul, dont il avait assuré la garde, Torpetius fit une profession de foi solennelle lors d’une fête organisée par l’empereur, lequel ordonna sa mise à mort. Les fauves se couchèrent à ses pieds ; la colonne à laquelle il fut attaché pour être flagellé se brisa et tua le bourreau. Pour en finir on le fit décapiter. (la tête de Torpetius est encore conservée dans une chapelle à Pise qui lui est dédiée. Chaque année, un groupe de tropéziens s’y rend en pèlerinage le 29 avril, date de sa mise à mort). Le corps fut mis dans une barque avec un coq et un chien, à l’embouchure de l’Arno. Poussée par le courant ligure, sa cargaison miraculeusement épargnée, la barque vint s’échouer, le 17 mai de l’an 68, sur le rivage qui allait prendre plus tard le nom de Saint-Tropez. 12

Saint-Tropez was born in Pisa (Tuscany), under the name of Caïus Silvius Torpetius of patrician lineage. As a brilliant officer, he was chosen by the emperor, to hold the charge of steward of his palace. He was converted to catholicism by Saint-Paul while he was his custodian. Torpetius solemnly professed his faith during a feast organized by the Emperor, who condemned him to death forthwith. But the wild beasts laid themselves down at his feet, the pillar he was chained to, to be flogged, collapsed and killed the executioner. To put an end to it, he was beheaded. Torpetius’ head is still kept in a chapel dedicated to his name, in Pisa. Every year, a group of tropezians set off on a pilgrimage to Pisa on April the 29th, the day he was put to death. His body was laid in a boat with cockerel and a dog (symbols of malevolence in the Roman bestiary), at the mouth of the River Arno. Borne along by the ligurian current, the boat with its precious load miraculously unharmed, ran on to the shores which were later to be named Saint- Tropez, on May 17th, 68 A.D.

La Statue du Bailli de Suffren Sur le vieux port se trouve la statue de PierreAndré de Suffren érigée en 1866, coulée dans du bronze provenant de pièces d’artillerie prises à l’ennemi et offertes par Napoléon III. Suffren de Saint-Tropez fut un temps Commandant-en-Chef des armées navales. The Old Harbour is dominated by the figure of Pierre-André de Suffren, whose statue was erected on the instigation of Emperor Napoleon III in 1866, and made of bronze melted down from pieces of artillery taken in battle with the Royal Navy. Le Château Suffren Sur la place Garezzio, attenante à la place de l’Hôtel de Ville, se trouve le plus vieil édifice de Saint-Tropez : la Tour Guillaume ou Tour Suffren. Le bâtiment adjacent était la demeure de la seigneurie de Saint-Tropez, titre qui échut en dernier lieu à la famille de Suffren. This tower is now generally known as the Suffren Tower, because the adjoining mansion was the seat of the Suffren family who were the last Lords of Saint-Tropez, the title being abolished under the Revolution. La Porte de Zanzibar Cette porte fabriquée sur l’île de Zanzibar au XIXe siècle a été ramenée par un capitaine tropézien. Elle témoigne de l’époque où des centaines de Tropéziens embarquaient depuis Marseille pour le long cours, naviguant sur toutes les mers du monde. This door, which was made on the island of Zanzibar during the XIXth century, was brought back by a tropezian captain. This is the witness of the time when hundreds of tropezians embarked at Marseille on long-haul trips, sailing all the world’s seas.

Le Marché aux poissons et la Place aux Herbes À côté de l’Office de Tourisme, la Porte de la Poissonnerie (avec son décor en mosaïque et ses étals en marbre) marque l’entrée du vieux Saint-Tropez. De là, on débouche Place aux Herbes, lieu du premier marché de la ville et où se tient encore, le matin, un convivial marché de fruits, légumes, fleurs et produits provençaux. The other side of this former “Gate” you come out onto the delightful place aux Herbes and its convivial market for fruit, flowers, vegetables and regional products. La rue Gambetta Cette rue, percée au XVIIIème lorsque SaintTropez a connu son âge d’or, était l’apanage des grandes familles de navigateurs et de marchands, qui faisaient venir de loin des matériaux nobles pour construire leurs hôtels particuliers. It is a street where the wealthy merchants and ship-owners built their mansions in the late 17th and the 18th centuries.

Place de l’Ormeau Située derrière l’église, c’est l’ancien cimetière de Saint-Tropez. Havre de paix au cœur du village, elle est très appréciée des Tropéziens. It was the old cemetery of Saint-Tropez situated just behind the church. Today the square is a haven of peace in the heart of town and is much appreciated by Tropezians.

Les Bravades The Bravades

Le mot de "Bravade" signifie "bravoure". Cette tradition provençale se perpétue de façon toute à fait particulière à Saint-Tropez les 16, 17, et 18 mai, depuis plus de 450 ans. Elle est le reflet de l'attachement des tropéziens à leur passé et de leur dévotion à leur Saint Patron. Cette commémoration a une double origine : religieuse (voir Histoire de Saint-Tropez) et militaire, mais pour mieux la comprendre et l'apprécier, il convient de faire un rapide résumé historique. En 1470, Jean de Cossa, pour repeupler Saint-Tropez (détruit par les invasions multiples), s’adresse à Raphaël de Garezzio, un génois, et signe un accord qui permet à 21 familles de Gênes de s’installer dans le village. Ils construiront les fortifications et prendront en charge la sécurité du Golfe. En échange, ils sont libres d’impôts et de taxes. L’an 1558 marque le début des Bravades (cérémonies traditionnelles en hommage au Saint Patron Torpes). Honorat Coste est le 1er capitaine de ville, un chef de milice en charge de la sécurité du village. Pendant plus d’un siècle, les capitaines de ville et leur milice assurèrent la défense locale et s’opposèrent victorieusement aux nombreuses attaques. Sous Louis XIV, la milice locale fut supprimée mais les tropéziens conservèrent leurs armes pour honorer leur Saint-Patron. Le capitaine continua à se mettre en tête de la bravade, grande fête patronale du 17 mai. Ainsi, la Ville de Saint-Tropez voit chaque année ses habitants en armes revêtir leurs uniformes de soldats et marins et faire retentir leurs tromblons et fusils en l’honneur du Saint comme à l’époque où ils allaient au combat ou à celle où, ils protégeaient d’attaques éventuelles la procession se rendant à la chapelle de Saint-Tropez située hors des murs. 16

The meaning of the word “Bravade” is bravery. These provençal traditional celebrations are held throughout Provence but take on an much deeper meaning in Saint-Tropez where they have been perpetuated on May the 16th 17th and 18th for over 450 years. They are the token of the Tropezians remembrance of their glorious past and deep attachment to their Patron Saint. This commemoration is both religious (Cf History of Saint-Tropez) and military; but in order to understand and appreciate it, one must become acquainted with a few historical facts. In 1470, in order to repopulate Saint-Tropez, which has been destroyed by various invasions Jean de Cossa signs an agreement with a nobleman from Genoa, Rafaele di Garrezzio who with 21 families will inhabit the village, they will build the fortifications and watch over the Gulf. In exchange for what they will be free from taxes and levies. In 1558, sees the beginning of the Bravades, a traditional commemoration in honour of the Patron Saint Torpes. The first town captain is Honorat Coste, with his militia, he is in charge of the security of the village. For over a century the town captains and their militia ensured local safety and victoriously repelled attacks. Under Louis the XIVth, the local militia was disbanded and replaced by royal troops, but tropezians retained their weapons to honour their Patron Saint. The town captain leads the Bravade every year. On may the 17th the town of Saint-Tropez sees its inhabitants in full uniform of musketeers or sailors fire their muskets and guns in a loud homage to their Patron Saint, like in the days when they fought off foes or protected processions to the Saint-Tropez Chapel outside the walls of the town. 17

t UNE EXPOSITION IMMERSIVE AN IMMERSIVE EXHIBITION L’histoire d’amour entre BB et Saint-Tropez commence lorsque ses parents achètent une maison dans le joli village du Sud de la France. Pendant le tournage de «La Femme et le Pantin», Brigitte achète la Madrague sur la route des Canebiers à Saint-Tropez en 1958 et contribue à faire ce village déjà très apprécié des artistes un endroit de légende international par sa seule présence et par les folles nuits tropéziennes qu’elle anime. L’exposition s’attachera tout particulièrement au lien unique entre une femme et la ville, à travers des photos et des objets inédits. C’est dans une France austère et conservatrice, celle du président René Coty (élu en 1954), que surgit le phénomène Bardot. Un espace de l’exposition, évoque cette France-là au travers de documents photographiques de l’époque.

The love story between BB and Saint-Tropez begins when her parents buy a house in this lovely South of France village. During the shooting of “La Femme et le Pantin”, Brigitte buys la Madrague on Saint-Tropez’s Canebiers road in 1958 and contributes towards making this village, already favored by artists, into a place of international legend by her mere presence and by the crazy tropezian nights which she animates. The Bardot exhibition will be particularly concerned with the unique link between a woman and her town, by means of photos and specific objects. The exhibition is born thanks to Brigitte Bardot’s support and to the loans of collectors, institutions and international artists, of key figures who played a part in the actress’s life. It highlights, on the 800 m2 of the Espace Rendez-Vous des Lices, the Saint-Tropez and the life of she who fascinated the world of the fifties and the seventies.

It was during the austere and conservative period of president René Coty (elected in 1954) that the Bardot phenomenon surged up. La chronologie est guidée par la filmographie de Brigitte Bardot du “Trou normand” avec Bourvil en 1952 à “L’histoire très bonne et très joyeuse de Colinot Trousse-Chemise” de Nina Companeez, son dernier film en 1973. Des affiches de films, mais aussi des costumes, et des photos de tournages sillonnent l’exposition. This is the main stream of the exhibition, covering Brigitte Bardot’s career from her first film “Trou normand” with Bourvil in 1952 to Nina Companeez’s “L’Histoire très bonne et très joyeuse de Colinot Trouse-Chemise”, her last film in 1973. Sculptures, aquarelles et esquisses gouachĂŠes. L’exposition montrera Rodin sous l’influence du Fauvisme. C’est Ă la fin des annĂŠes 1890 que Rodin entama une vĂŠritable carrière de dessinateur. L’autonomie du dessin par rapport Ă la sculpture est une donnĂŠe essentielle de son Ĺ“uvre. Les innombrables dessins au crayon, rehaussĂŠs ou non de lavis ou d’aquarelle qu’il rĂŠalisa Ă l’automne de sa vie ne sont pas des projets pour des sculptures mais une oeuvre Ă part entière. La rĂŠintroduction de la couleur par touches finit par envahir la feuille faisant parfois disparaĂŽtre le trait d’origine et tend Ă transformer le dessin en peinture. Le MusĂŠe de l’Annonciade, temple de la couleur, se devait de prĂŠsenter l’oeuvre aquarellĂŠe de Rodin. Since Easter 2010, the Annonciade will be presenting a major figure of late 19th and early 20th century art: Rodin. Sculptures, water colours and gouaches. The exhibition shows Rodin under the influence of fauvisme. It was at the end of the 1890s that Rodin set off on a true sketching career. The autonomy of drawing in relation to sculpting is a major feature of his work. The numerous pencil drawings that he produced early on, highlighted or not with water coloring, were not projects for sculptures but a separate works. The re-introduction of colors in touches ends up invading the picture, sometimes disguising the original line and tending to transform the drawing into a painting. The Annonciade museum, the temple of color, is the perfect place for admiring Rodin’s water colored works.

AdulĂŠ du grand public, Modigliani reste l’un des artistes les plus recherchĂŠs par les collectionneurs et les plus grands musĂŠes du monde. Mort jeune (Ă l’âge de 36 ans), ses Ĺ“uvres sont rares et le MusĂŠe de l’Annonciade avec Ă sa tĂŞte le conservateur en chef, Jean-Paul Monery, ont su relever le dĂŠfi en prĂŠsentant des Ĺ“uvres permettant de montrer les diffĂŠrentes facettes de l’oeuvre de Modigliani. L’exposition s’appuie ĂŠgalement sur l’ensemble exceptionnel de ses dessins, qui montre l’un des aspects essentiels de Modigliani : une Ĺ“uvre graphique, brillante, aussi virtuose que Matisse ou Picasso. The Annonciade museum invites you this summer to discover the artistic universe of Italian painter and sculptor Amadeo Modigliani. Adulated by the public, Modigliani remains one of the most soughtafter artists by collectors and the world’s major museums. He died at the early age of 36 years and his works are rare. The Annonciade Museum, headed by Jean-Paul Monery, meets the challenge by presenting items which display the different facets of Modigliani’s work. The exhibition also concentrates on the rare collection of drawings highlighting one of Modigliani’s most essential aspects, his brilliant graphical work , as talented as Matisse’s and Picasso’s. Physically too weak, he is condemned to abandoning sculpting and to trying other styles before reaching a dark and sad form of expressionism. His art was atypical at the time, based on the Italian references but also impressionist, fauvist, cubist and primitive art. The works presented allow one to grasp all the passages and adaptations leading to a unique style set beyond the world and daily customs. This exhibition allows one to discover a truly exceptional painter, who strives to reach the interior of the beings portrayed in each of his works. The exhibition’s catalogue shows that Modigliani’s preoccupations were identical to those of all artists of the epoch’s Parisian avant-garde.

Une promenade sur le sentier du littoral de la Presqu’île de Saint-Tropez vous permettra de découvrir une végétation variée, de petites criques sauvages, des jolies plages de sable fin ainsi que de nombreux vestiges historiques. Le parcours sur la commune de Saint-Tropez représente plus de 11km de randonnée de la Tour du Portalet au Cap du Pinet. Vous pourrez ensuite continuer jusqu’à la célèbre Plage de Pampelonne, le Cap Camarat, la plage de l’Escalet ou encore le Cap Taya zones protégées par le Conservatoire du Littoral. Pour un tourisme durable For a sustainable tourism Le tourisme est un secteur où la question de la durabilité est cruciale car cette industrie implique une concentration de personnes sur des espaces limités, pendant des périodes réduites et sur des territoires souvent fragiles (centres historiques, espaces naturels…). L’enjeu est donc de taille... Pour ces raisons, Saint-Tropez Tourisme s’engage dans une démarche volontaire de sensibilisation au développement durable. Ce projet entend développer un tourisme qui préserve et met en valeur à long terme les ressources naturelles, culturelles et sociales de notre territoire. Saint-Tropez Tourisme a ainsi sollicité l’agence Village SUD pour l’accompagner dans la conception d’une Démarche Tourisme Durable. Une première phase d’analyse et d’enquêtes sur le terrain a été menée afin de sonder et de mobiliser l’ensemble des acteurs professionnels sur ce thème. Cette action a également été renforcée grâce à une communication en direction des médias locaux. Les enseignements de cette mission permettront de définir une stratégie opérationnelle “viable”, résultant des tests effectués auprès des professionnels locaux, ainsi qu’une analyse stratégique révélant les facteurs clés de succès de mise en œuvre de notre Démarche Tourisme Durable. L’objectif à long terme est de se démarquer face à la concurrence et attirer des consommateurs responsables, de réduire les coûts d’utilisation des ressources et d’élimination des déchets ; et d’améliorer la qualité de la destination. Cette stratégie aboutira à un choix d’actions pertinentes et “pré testées” auprès des professionnels. Tourism is a sector where the question of sustainability is essential since this industry tends to attract people to limited spaces, during a limited time and often in fragile territories (historical centers, conservation sites…). The stakes are therefore high… For these reasons, Saint-Tropez Tourisme (Saint-Tropez’s Tourist Board) is actively involved in attracting attention towards sustainable development. This project means to develop a tourism that conserves and highlights the natural, cultural and social resources of our territory in the long term. Saint-Tropez has called upon the Village SUD agency to accompany it in the conception of a Sustainable Tourism Approach. A first phase of analysis and field enquiries has been undertaken in order to sound and to mobilize all professional bodies on this theme. This action has also been strengthened with the help of communication via the local media.
