What’s on this Summer? Blackpool Airshow Watch planes classic and modern take to the skies in Blackpool’s Airshow. Gasp at spectacular wing walkers and admire some beautiful flying machines from the past and present - a marvellous family day out for young and old! Blackpool hosted the UK’s first official air show in 1909 and now the event is staged annually with jaw dropping aerobatic stunts and fly-bys from some incredible aircraft no longer in commission. All eyes will be skyward as Blackpool’s breathtaking Air Show returns for two days on Sunday 10 and Monday 11 August 2014. Friendly Engines in July at Ribble Steam Railway The Ribble Steam Railway, on Preston’s Docklands, will light up the faces of all the youngsters visiting when many of the steam and diesel locos will be wearing their own smiley faces at our July ‘Friendly Engines Specials’ over the weekend of 19th & 20th. Every engine’s face is decorated to give it an individual appearance and a character of its own. mindfulness for families With Children’s Therapist Carol Hargreaves
As the 6 week holidays begin, we all look forward with anticipation to stepping off the hamster wheel and taking some time out with those who matter the most - your family. The holidays are an ideal time to connect together as a family and to reduce everyday stress and worries. So, take a deep breath, wind down, relax and enjoy. As adults, we know that stress damages your health and that anxiety and depression have long term and far reaching negative effects on your life and the lives of those closest to you. There are so many proven health benefits of feeling calm and relaxed but how often do we actually prioritise this? There always seems to be some other pressing thing to do. But if you are stressed, your children probably will be too. If you are calm, relaxed and gently focussed then the whole family will clearly benefit. How do you relax? I am an avid reader and somehow a story just takes me to another world, transporting me away from everyday worries. I also love walking - my mind just switches to automatic pilot and off I go! Have you ever tried or heard of mindfulness - often described as cultivating a focused awareness on the present moment. Mindfulness practice

is widely used in business, healthcare, and education to improve attention and well being. Many companies provide mindfulness training at work to reduce on-the-job stress and hospitals may refer patients to courses in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction to develop skills to cope with physical and emotional problems and there are a growing number of schools that use mindfulness to help anxious students cope better and achieve more in exams. Research has linked the practice of cultivating a non-judgemental awareness of the present moment to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, greater emotional stability and improved sleep quality, heightened feelings of compassion and greater success achieving weight-loss goals, among a number of other advantages. Now there is a growing buzz around mindfulness in the home - a quietly growing movement for mindfulness in the family, and the use of meditation to optimize the health, well-being and happiness of children. Research is beginning to shed light on the power of mindfulness and we’re starting to recognize that mindfulness practices could be beneficial for children for the same reasons it helps adults, contributing to reduced stress, calmness, improved sleep quality and heightened focus. Here are a few simple tips to help you get started:

Create an area to practice in The children I have worked with as a therapist always love to sit inside the hanging netting that you can get for over the bed, enclosing themselves and feeling safe, in a private and almost magical space. It reminds me very much of the fun we had as children building a den with sheets over chair backs and draping over tables! Any

quiet comfortable corner of house or garden will do!

Practice together daily for one minute You could use the oven timer or an app. Everyone can find one minute in even the most busy life.

Focus on breathing This helps us to focus on the moment rather than be distracted by our thoughts. Children can learn this easily too - simply noticing their breath, how their chest rises and falls with the breath, helps them to be in the moment. It might help to lie prone and balance a teddy on your child’s tummy so they can see the rise and fall caused by incoming and outgoing breaths. In that moment, your child is in their breath and nowhere else. If you do the same, then you are both connected in that moment together.

Be patient Children do not always respond in the way we want them to, and meditation is no different. We can guide them on how to sit, close their eyes and so on, but if they do not want to close their eyes, then do not force them. Choose your time, perhaps agreeing with them the best time for them. Give them something to look at (on the floor if they are seated or on the ceiling if they are lying down). Ask them to relax their gaze by going daydreamy and trying to see out the sides of their eyes (it uses the peripheral vision which is a great technique that helps to relax the brain). If your children are into it, that’s great. If not, maybe they will be later. Don’t force it. My favourite mindfulness practice with children: Do this with them, at an appropriate time
when they can slow down a little and in a relaxing place. Get them to pick a flower - a daisy is as good as anything! - and find a bubble wand - magic bubbles that don’t pop are wonderful here. They can inhale the scent of the flower, and then blow out a bubble - slowing it down, breathing in the flower smell through their nose, holding it for a few seconds and breathing out through their mouth to blow the bubbles gently into the air, watching the colours and their gentle float downwards. I guarantee you will enjoy this and that it will bring you and your family closer together in a moment of peace. If you want to learn more about teaching mindfulness to children, look up The Mindful Child by Susan Kaiser Greenland and Child’s Mind by Dr. Christopher Willard. In addition, Kerry Lee McLean’s picture books are great for younger children.

Lancashire Hussars In celebration of armed forces day, the 28th June 2014, in Stanley park Blackpool, The Lancashire Hussars display troop put on a series of displays showing how the yeomanry cavalry trained and prepared for World War one starting with a recreation of the camp ’games’ played by the regiment during their visit to South Shore in 1903, and ending with military manoeuvres showing how the yeomanry trained for war in 1914. Also a display of camp life in the yeomanry was put on with posters of original photos of the cavalry regiment and it’s time in Blackpool.
Riding trained horses, wearing authentic period uniforms the troop demonstrated the use of the weapons used in WW1 by the yeomanry, in a series of short performances, the details of the displays having been taken from the records of the original regimental officers and their diaries. A small but enthusiastic crowd met and greeted the riders and cheered them on. Blackpool & Fylde Children’s Pantomime (BFCP) Blackpool & Fylde Children’s Pantomime (BFCP) has been created to recapture the success of Blackpool Children’s Pantomime (BCP), which was established over 100 years ago and ran successfully for over 80 years. BCP eventually discontinued at a huge loss to the community. However in 2010 with the increase in demand for the performing arts it seemed the ideal opportunity to bring back this popular seaside tradition that is a unique and special part of Blackpool’s heritage. Blackpool and Fylde Children’s Pantomime has provided children 18 years and under that live within the area, a chance to be educated in theatre and the performing arts. The project is tailored to help every child develop organisational and communication skills and learn to take responsibility and ownership of a project whilst also developing individual confidence and self-esteem. Our first production of Snow White took place at The Opera House Blackpool, in February 2011 with a cast of approximately 100 children. The show was extremely popular and due to demand we returned 2 years later with our production of Aladdin. of our previous two shows, we are thrilled to announce that The Grand Theatre Blackpool has welcomed BFCP and will be a home for our next production of Cinderella and for our future shows.
Auditions For Cinderella ... We are now looking to recruit a new cast for our production of Cinderella that will take place at The Grand Theatre in February 2015. The pantomime is very inclusive and aims to give performance opportunities to a wide range of young people. We offer each child the opportunity to be involved in acting, singing and dancing. We have lead parts through to chorus parts. Any child can audition and there is no requirements for previous experience. If you would like to take part ‌ we would love to see you. We look forward to welcoming old cast members and new performers alike. Our aim is to keep costs as low as possible whilst giving every performer lifelong memories and experience. For BFCP the journey is as important as the final production. BFCP offers each child the chance to make new friends and learn new skills whilst having fun.
