SYNOPSIS ! !

In As You Like It, Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke, falls in love with Orlando, the disinherited son of one of the duke's friends. ("Summary of As You Like It." Bard Stage. Web. 28 Apr. 2015. <http://www.bardstage.org/ summary-of-as-you-like-it-and-characters.htm>.) When she is banished from court by her usurping uncle, Duke Frederick, Rosalind decides to seek refuge in the Forest of Ardenne, where her father and his loyal followers currently live, as well as where Orlando recently fled to after discovering that Oliver is plotting against his life. She assumes the guise of a male by the name of Ganymede to ensure safe passage on her journey, and her cousin Celia — who disguises herself as Aliena, a shepherdess — and the court jester, Touchstone, leave with her.

!

Once in Ardenne, a local named Phoebe falls in love with Rosalind-as-Ganymede, whilst Silvius hopelessly pines for Phoebe; Rosalind-as-Ganymede tries to help Orlando through his overpowering affections for Rosalind; Orlando saves Oliver — who was sent by Duke Frederick to retrieve Celia — from being devoured by a lioness; and Oliver falls in love with Celia-as-Aliena.

!

Finally, Ganymede and Aliena drop their guises, and properly as themselves, Rosalind marries Orlando, and Celia marries Oliver. Silvius and Phoebe, and Touchstone and Audrey — a local — get married as well. Duke Frederick, who was marching with his soldiers to destroy Duke Senior, becomes an enlightened man on the journey, and returns the throne to his brother, Duke Senior.
