A WORD FROM THE DISTRICT NEWS EDITOR Zoe Yao
hello cnh bees!
We’re just one month away from the end of the term. I don’t know about you, but it feels so surreal. These past few months have passed by so quickly, and I have enjoyed every moment of it. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the service, success, and ohana this term. My experiences this past term have been unforgettable, and it’s hard to believe that it’s almost over. That being said, it’s always important to look to the future and keep going forward. The deadline for on-time DCON registration has just passed, so if your home club still has not yet registered, the late registration deadline is March 14! There will be an added late fee to the registration price. If you’re having financial issues, reach out to your sponsoring Kiwanis club! Kiwanians are here to help us out. If you have any questions or concerns regarding DCON registration as a whole, feel free to contact DCON Chair Sam Voong at cnhkc.dcon@gmail.com! As we approach April and District Convention, it’s easy to slack off and neglect your duties as a member or officer. Keep your goals in mind and remember why you serve and lead. If you’re an officer, remember that you’re doing your duty to best serve the members. Let’s end this term strong and establish a solid foundation for the future of Key Club. Thank you so much for reading! It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve you as your CNH District News Editor. Thank you for all the wonderful opportunities you’ve given me. See you all next month!

FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Angelica Garcia
hello key clubbers!
I have started to become an emotional mess knowing that this is the second-to last message for the CNH Newsletter. These days, I have been reflecting heavily on my term as well the terms of the officers. Currently, I am judging the Distinguished Lt. Governor applications, and reading the successes as well as the obstacles the Lt. Governors had to face has made me appreciate them even more than I do presently (which sounds impossible— but it is true). I ask you all to help me end the 2017-18 term through recognition and awards. Whether it is a simple thank you or an elaborate gift made by numerous Key Clubbers, showing your appreciation to another Key Clubber who has positively impacted you this year is how I hope this district ends off. Knowing that we are appreciative of each other will spread the joy and love across the district that we have
fostered since the beginning of the term. It does not have to be an officer that has left an impression on you. Some other people you can send thanks to are Kiwanians, faculty advisors, or fellow members. March signals the arrival of the springtime: a fresh, new beginning. As the seasons change and the flowers begin to bloom, let us open our arms and embrace one another to signify our love and care for one another. I simply ask for your impression of this term to conclude with a favorable attitude. I’ll talk to you for one last time in a month! Stay buzzin’ bees! Angelica Garcia District Governor cnhkc.gov1718@gmail.com
FROM THE DISTRICT SECRETARY Margarett Lee
aloha cnh bees!
Would you look at that; we only have a month and a half until our term comes to an end. A month and a half until we all reunite at District Convention 2018 at Reno, Nevada. A month and a half until we can finally see the legacy we leave behind in this term. Time truly goes by fast when we’re making an impact in our homes, schools, and communities. BUT this is not the end of our journey. We have a month and a half left to accomplish the goals that we have not achieved yet. We have a month and a half left to leave a legacy. We have a month and a half left to make a change. Don’t forget to finish the term strong — I cannot emphasize this enough. You CAN make a difference in the last few weeks of this term. Before I end this message, I wanted to thank you all for your hard work and dedication you have poured into this organization this past
04
year. It is truly heartwarming to see all your efforts and contributions in the MRF submissions and social media posts. Please know that everything you do does not go unnoticed — I love being connected with all of you. I am so proud of everything that you have been doing and will continue to do in the years coming forward. I hope that you made countless of amazing memories while being in Key Club this past year. Lastly, thank you again for giving me the opportunity to serve you all as the District Secretary of this term. I cannot fully express the gratitude that I feel in a simple message, but I hope you can feel my sincerity when I say this. I look forward to seeing you all at District Convention 2018. See you all in Reno! Margarett Lee District Secretary cnhkc.sec1718@gmail.com
FROM THE DISTRICT TREASURER Vivian Chu
happy march everyone!
Aside from dues, I am beyond proud of you all for fundraising over $210,000 for the Pediatric Trauma Program! Though our district goal of $190,000 has been achieved already, continue to fundraise for our preferred charities or any local organizations around you. The possibilities are endless when it comes to fundraisers! Additionally, remember that you can submit funds for any program even now!
As of February 22nd, 2018, the CaliNev- Ha District has 38,819 dues paid members, 726 dues paid clubs, and 60 suspended clubs. This is amazing progress, but I know that we can move forward and achieve our district goal of 43,000 dues paid members! If you currently serve a suspended club, please contact your respective Lieutenant Governor (or me!) for assistance in getting back into good standing. Please keep in mind that you can pay your dues anytime throughout the year! Officers should be encouraging new members to pay their dues to ensure that they receive the full benefits of being a dues paid member.
With just about two months left in the term, it can be easy for you to feel burnt out or drained right now. I believe in you all, and I hope that you make the most of the remainder of the term. Push yourself to achieve any remaining goals you have!
I hope that you have been doing well and taking care of yourselves. District Convention is roughly a month and a half away from today. Though I am counting down the days till I see you all again, it’s a bittersweet experience having to retire after four amazing years in this organization.
See you soon! Vivian Chu District News Editor cnhkc.trs1718@gmail.com
FROM THE INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE Luke Gilmore
hello cnh key club!
I hope you all had a wonderful February. Just because Valentine’s month is almost over doesn’t mean you all should stop showing love through the service you do! Plan an impactful and meaningful service project in your community. You can find and share service project ideas in the Key Club Service Directory. I cannot wait to hopefully see you all in less than two months for the largest event of the California-Nevada-Hawaii service year! The CNH District Key Club Convention will be held on April 13-15, 2018, in Reno, Nevada. It will be an event you won’t want to miss! You will be able to elect your new CNH executive leaders, dance the night away, participate in workshops and general sessions, and much more! If you have any last minute questions, talk to your Lt. Governor. Speaking of convention, International Convention is a great way to celebrate a great year full of service on an International scale! This
year’s International Convention will be held in Chicago, Illinois, from July 4-8. Similar to DCON, you can participate in dances, workshops, and general sessions. Additionally, you will be able to elect your new International Board, see the sights in Chicago, bond with members from CNH and across International, see a beautiful Chicago fireworks display on the evening of July 4, and much more! If you need help fundraising for convention, please feel free to email me! I have a toolkit that can help you fundraise for this year’s International Convention. Don’t forget that HALO applications for the second round are due on May 1! You can go to www.wehalo.org for more information. Keep making me proud, CNH! If you ever need anything from me, you can always reach out to me. Happy serving, and I can’t wait to see you all continue to make strides in serving your homes, schools, and communities. SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE PROGRAM CMN TEDDY BEAR MAKING Are you interested in being featured in the next District Newsletter? If yes, then you should submit to the Spotlight on Service Program (SOSP)! The CNH Service Projects Committee shines a light on 3-4 exceptional projects each month that leave a significant impact on the communities that clubs are from. Each month has its own focus that works towards Key Club International’s Major Emphasis, “Children: Their Future, Our Focus”. Submissions are collected through a form that can be found on the CNH CyberKey, under the “Projects” tab on the “Spotlight on Service Program”page. Pictures can be sent to cnhkc.sp@gmail.com.
JANUARY FOCUS: CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK
Kaiser Key Club | D22H | R18 “To start, I contacted the volunteer office at the Kapiolani Hospital in Honolulu to arrange the drop off of the teddy bear dolls we were going to be making. Next, certain forms were required by our school and had to be reviewed and verified by faculty members. These forms took at least 2-3 weeks to be reviewed and processed, so it is important to prepare them in advance. After being approved, the form was given to members to be completed with a parent signature. After taking care of the forms, I prepared the materials and asked members to donate hand towels. On the day of the event, I showed a tutorial video and walked around, helping those in need. I believe that this was a fun project for our club, as it was different from most service projects that we do. Kaiser Key Club members were able to bond with one another for 2 hours while making approximately 50 teddy bear dolls with cute messages for the patients at Kapiolani Hospital. Key Clubbers had fun making these dolls for children at our local hospital too. We all hope that they we were able to make these kids smile. If our club was to do this service project again, I would like to increase member participation.” Contact: Aina Hori alohaaina95@gmail.com
KIWIS-GIVING
(NON-SLIP SOCKS & STRESS BALLS)
HUGS CARD MAKING
San Leandro Key Club | D02 | R09
Kalani Key Club | D22H | R18
“The San Leandro Key Club Officer Board decided to host a project outside of our typical service events. We wanted to do something with the Children’s Miracle Network and saw that we could make non-slip socks and stress balls. We asked members and officers to donate material and asked our Kiwanis Adviser to use their facility for these various activities. This project was really fun because our club bonded well together and realized that it was pretty easy to do a non-traditional service event. Although the stress balls were extremely stressful to make because we didn’t have the funnels that our instructions required, everything else went quite smoothly. Next time we do a project involving stress balls we’ll definitely bring funnels and more members because it was super fun to bond with all of the members and officers.”
“Our club was in charge of hosting our division’s January DCM, social, and two service projects: making care packages for the homeless shelter and making get-well cards for children at Kapiolani Medical Hospital –the only Hawaii hospital that is a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. We had to provide all the supplies for the cards and tell the students how to design them. We then collected them and gave them to the hospital afterwards. We feel that the project impacted our club because it was one of the few projects we hosted. We got the chance to grow as leaders and to gain planning experience. Plus, it was heart warming to be able to do something for the children. The project was a success. One thing that we could have done to improve it was to offer more ways for the students to get be creative with their cards such as providing stickers or using different types of paper. We could have also done an event at the hospital with the children.

Jasper Wang Division 35 East Why did you join Key Club? At first, I joined for the college applications. As I attended each service event though, I eventually just fell in love with Key Club!
What legacy do you hope to leave?
The legacy I want to leave behind is one that shows my dedication and passion. I want future members to be inspired by my actions, and hopefully continue to do the same for others!
Who's the most memorable person you have met? Bill Yen. He was the first person who made me feel like I belong in this club. Through each cabinet bonding, service event, and our Thailand trip, Bill became someone I look up to. For what he has done, I would like to say  "thank you Bill!"

WHAT DO THEY DO? Grants will be given to clubs for projects which seek to prevent and/or treat pediatric trauma – defined as sudden, unintentional physical injury!
WHY SHOULD I APPLY? This is an amazing opportunity to receive funds that your club may not have in order to carry out a desired service project that has great meaning and supports pediatric trauma. Utilize your resources to serve a great cause!
IS THERE A DEADLINE? No, there isn’t a deadline, so it’s never too late to apply for a PTP grant! Grants are available all year long, though apply ahead of time for your event to ensure you have enough time to prepare.
WHERE CAN I APPLY/GET MORE INFORMATION? Grants can be found on the CNH Foundation website at this link: http://www.cnhfoundation.org/what-we-do/grantmaking-awards/

A KIWANIS MIRA C LE Serge Viau from Canada and Angela Liu from Taiwan experienced a miracle with each other when they came eye to eye at the Kiwanis International Office in Indianapolis, Indiana for training and to immerse themselves into the wonderful Kiwanis culture.
A connection happened, and because of this one moment Kiwanis gave a couple a life of happiness after long distance relationships of times not seeing one another to becoming a married couple in the process of obtaining permanent residence in Canada. The fellow Kiwanian Serge Viau found happiness in his transition of Governor-Elect for the Eastern Canada and Caribbean District and was so much more lucky than that to have met the woman of his dreams.
Who would have thought Kiwanis would do more than help the children of the world. It has created happiness for the lives of not only children, but Kiwanians of their own.

DIVISION RECOGNITION
First of all, congratulations! Being chosen for this recognition is truly an honor, and you should be excited! I, as well as everyone on the district board, am extremely proud of you and grateful for your service. It is because of people like you that our district is so successful. It is important to remember that although Key Club is not about the recognition but about the service, recognition does play a role in our district, something that myself and the committee I serve make sure of. Again, congratulations and remember to keep on striving to do your best!

MARCH DISTRICT CALENDAR What is a division council meeting? A Division Council Meeting (DCM) is a meeting conducted by the respective Lieutenant Governor for the members of his or her respective division. DCMs are full of information about upcoming events, education about Key Club, and much more. There is always something for everyone at a DCM! At DCMs, you will learn more about various projects and events, get involved with the division and its people, and gain a better understanding of how great this organization truly is. You are encouraged to attend in order to learn more about what’s been happening in Key Club, and why it matters to you. Some DCMs are even combined with a service project, fundraiser, or social event so you can be there for more than one reason!

Key Club has partnered with the MARCH OF DIMES for decades to give every baby a healthy start. Key Club members raise thousands of dollars annually through various programs. Since 1994, Key Club has been Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF and over the years has raised nearly $5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide and HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland. Now it’s helping The Eliminate Project. Since 2014 Key Club International has been partnering with the THIRST PROJECT during the Month of March to participate in the “Dirty Little Secret” campaign. 748 Million people on our planet do not have access to safe, clean drinking water. Key Club members fill up a water bottle with dirty water and carry the bottle around all month. When people ask why, Key Club members share the secret.
