Zollanvari are premier producers of tribal, classical and modern carpets in

Floral 1, Vintage Quality,

Iran. Our passion has always been for the artistic weavings of the nomadic

Oxidised Pure Silk,

people of southern Persia where almost all our collections are woven. The art

of carpet making has always exemplified the expression of a culture and of a way of life, and as a result Zollanvari’s use of pattern, colour and symbolism has been constantly evolving. What sets us apart is the active encouragement our weavers are given to allow their own aesthetic sense to shine through the designs. Individual, expressive and unique carpets are the result. When the embargo against imports of Iranian carpets into the United States was first put in place in 2010, Zollanvari rose to the challenge by looking at other countries where we could produce something new for the American market. We searched for a source where the design sensibility and weaving tradition as well as the craftsmanship were at par with the standards of our weavings in Iran. The beautiful, historic city of Jaipur, in the heart of northern India, and a city rich in colour with centuries of weaving tradition inherited from ancient Persian weavers, was a natural choice. Here, we found strategic partners who were as committed and passionate about making beautiful carpets as we were and so Jaipur became the birthplace and inspiration for our breathtakingly beautiful Kundan and Couture Collections. The design inspiration for the Kundan Collections has been drawn from old and antique fabrics and textiles (ikats, kaitags and African textiles), Far Eastern motifs such as dragons, mosque ceilings, Moroccan tiled pool floors, aquarium fishes, and more, but given a modern twist and sensibility. In terms of colours and hues nature has been a primary source of inspiration – the blues and aqua of oceans, the greens and vivacious colours of flowers, meadows and trees, the golds and warm hues of New England autumn foliage, sunrises and sunsets – but what has also influenced the colour palette of the Kundan Collections have been the effervescent colours of everyday life in Jaipur and its surroundings. Once launched at DOMOTEX, the leading international showcase for the world of flooring, the production proved an instant hit and was further developed for Zollanvari markets globally. The collection has won awards at the prestigious Carpet Design Awards 2014 and 2016, which are considered as the Oscars for the handmade carpet world.

Kundan Pure Silk® Collection The word ‘Kundan’ has its origin in Sanskrit. It signifies ‘gold purified to the highest degree’ and evokes an image of an object in its purest form – an object that shimmers like gold. The Zollanvari Kundan Pure Silk® Collection is the culmination of centuries of weaving tradition combined with a modern sensibility and understanding of interiors. This weaving tradition dates back to the courts of the great Mughal Emperors of 16th century India and has remained an integral part of the culture and handicraft of the nation ever since. Our rugs are painstakingly hand-knotted by artisans who have inherited this rich cultural heritage. Only the most exquisite natural materials such as organic silk are used for the production of these weavings. The result is rugs that enthral with their astonishing colours, perfectly harmonious designs and with their highest quality standards of production. The Kundan Pure Silk® Collection embodies the harmonious relationship between nature and interiors drawing inspiration from the four elements of water, earth, air and fire. The rugs are over-dyed with layers of translucent colour, creating a very unique multidimensional, shimmering texture – resembling the surface of the ocean, bathed in the golden, shimmering, magical light of the morning sun. The latest design line in the Kundan Pure Silk® Collection is Iridescence, a totally modern collection, taking inspiration in animal pelts and skins.

Kundan Diffusion Koti Silk Collection The term Koti silk originates from the manner in which the raw materials are procured. Small artisans and producers who sell these materials were facing a great deal of difficulty obtaining fair prices in the market. To secure a fairer pricing, trading centres were established where spinners would be able to sell their ‘silk’ at standardised prices to wholesalers. These trading centres were called ‘Kothis’ (large houses). We simplified the term for our Kundan Diffusion Collection to Koti. The material is viscose made from the cellulose pulp of bamboo, banana or other natural materials. Zollanvari have selected a blend of the finest of these fibres for the Kundan Diffusion Collection. The result is not only rugs made out of sustainable and relatively environment-friendly raw material but a world apart from the mass-produced viscose lines available widely on the market. Two key factors in all Zollanvari production and manufacture, indeed in all commercial activities of the company, are optimum working conditions and fair remuneration. The name ‘Koti’ chosen for this line is itself an endorsement of Zollanvari’s commitment to fair trading conditions. Reza Zollanvari, Group Managing Director, commented: “The wages we pay the weavers are extremely fair and well above average. In addition, we provide clean drinking water, sanitary facilities and meals in our weaving centres. Higher wages have helped improve standards of living for the weavers and their families.” The weave quality, similar to the Zollanvari Kundan Pure Silk® Collection, is the culmination of centuries of weaving tradition combined with a modern sensibility and understanding of interiors. These rugs are also painstakingly hand-knotted by artisans who have inherited this rich cultural heritage. The result is competitively priced rugs that like the Kundan Pure Silk® rugs enthral with their astonishing colour combinations, their well-balanced designs – many inspired from ikat and kaitag weavings – and their stunning production quality.

Couture Collection A ‘designer’ line, the Couture Collection, imaginatively combines the worlds of fashion fabrics with that of contemporary carpet design. The collection was developed in conjunction with the Milanese designers SoFar SoNear, winning several accolades including Best Modern Design at the Carpet Design Awards 2014, an Interior Innovation Award at the imm in Cologne and a Special Mention at the German Design Awards 2015. When our design partners first saw the Kundan carpets, they immediately associated the astonishing weaving intricacy and dyeing techniques to the world of fashion. And so that’s how the design concept came about. Iconic fashion fabrics such as Scottish Tartan, English Prince of Wales and Herringbone Tweed and Bouclé used in so many jackets by the fashion myth Coco Chanel were transformed into rich silk carpets that are available in bespoke sizes.

11

Zero Pile Vintage Collection This is a new collection launched at DOMOTEX 2016 that combines classical Persian vagireh and floral motifs with Indian weaving artistry. Vagirehs were sampler rugs. In the 19th century, weavers were given all the design elements that made up the full design of a rug as a sample to show the colours and balance of the full rug to be woven. Vagirehs normally came in small ‘sampler’ sizes. We have transformed a traditional design into a modern classical with a vintage look and finish.

The Collections Each Kundan, Couture and Zero Pile carpet Zollanvari create is unique and achieves its exceptional beauty with the use of exceptional materials and dyes, enhanced by an over-dyeing technique with layers of translucent colour that creates a distinctive multidimensional, shimmering texture. These carpets will always enchant with their timeless designs woven to perfection for generations to come.

Kundan Pure® Silk The Kundan Pure Silk® line is available in three distinct qualities: ‘Diamond’, the jewel in the crown of our collection with our finest weave quality, ‘Ethos’, our standard line, with a coarser weave using two different types of silks and washes, and ‘Vintage’, our ‘antique look’ line made of silk and oxidized wool – a traditional method using black and brown dyes to oxides the wool fibre (see Floral 1, Vintage Quality on pages 2 and 3 of this catalogue). 16 17

Couture The beauty of some very iconic fabrics are the inspiration for the Couture Collection of silk carpets. Style gurus in recent times have said that fashion and design live in symbiosis, nurturing each other. The Couture Collection of Carpets confirms this trend.

Zero Pile The Zero Pile effect in these carpets is achieved through a combination of special dyestuff. The wool is first dyed with the special dyes and then used to weave these carpets. Finally we apply a proprietary washing technique to oxidise the wool just enough to give the carpets an aged/ antiqued/vintage feel and look.

The Story of Zollanvari The story of Zollanvari began when in 1947 at a tender age Gholam Reza Zollanvari joined his father’s carpet business, a legacy that was handed down from his great grandfather. Initially he focused on the traditional products of the nomads of South Persia. Those colourful carpets with high piles, Gabbehs, were knotted only for use in homes as bedspreads and bedcovers. They were and are a vivid expression of the art and soul of the traditional weaving and aesthetic of southern Persian nomads. Appreciation and demand for Gabbehs grew over the years. Gholam Reza Zollanvari began working with the Ghashghai’ and Luri Nomads to start weaving new Gabbehs with more contemporary designs. In 1985 his son Reza Zollanvari founded the company in Zurich in order to have direct access to the European market. The company expanded in 1989 when the weaving of large and room size Gabbehs began, using naturally dyed, hand-spun wool. This step is now recognised as a milestone in the history of Persian weaving. The ‘new’ Gabbehs exploded onto the world market, with new colours, sizes and patterns being woven to satisfy the demands of the Western markets. Soon Gabbehs became synonymous with the Zollanvari name and the company’s creative and innovative spirit. Gholam Reza’s second son, Hamid took over the business in Iran. A second centre was built, close to Shiraz which brought together design, dyeing and warehousing under one roof. Washing, finishing, customer services and shipping were then located in a large warehouse in Tehran. The sixth generation of Zollanvaris continues to be active in the family venture in Hamburg, Kapstadt, Istanbul, Shanghai and Secaucus, NJ, USA.
