BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE

ZONTA FOUNDATION FOR WOMEN

MISSION

Zonta International is a leading global organization of individuals working together to build a better world for women and girls.

VISION

Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential.

In such a world, women have access to all resources and are represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence.

Rachana Lamsal (cover image), a positive, full of life 15-year-old from Nepal, was invited to train as a facilitator with a local program to help young girls understand the value of continuing their education and waiting to marry until they are mature, confident young women. Rachana has made a major impact on her community, including stopping some forced marriages. Read more about Rachana in the Global Programme to End Child Marriage story inside this report.

Dear Members, Friends and Partners,

As we reflect on the past year, we are filled with gratitude and hope. Together, we have made significant strides toward building a brighter future for women and girls. This year’s theme, “Building a Brighter Future,” speaks to the heart of our mission—enabling women and girls to reach their full potential and creating opportunities for brighter tomorrows.

From reaching our fundraising goals to launching new programs, our efforts have been fueled by the belief that every woman and girl deserves the opportunity to thrive. Thanks to your unwavering dedication, we have been able to provide resources, support, education and advocacy that are transforming lives every day. This year, we have seen incredible stories of resilience, growth and success that remind us why our work is so important.

Together, we have achieved so much. The following are just a few examples:

Enabling through Education: We provided educational fellowships, scholarships and awards to 134 women and girls, giving them the resources and encouragement they need to excel in school, universities and beyond.

Engaging Girls in Climate Change Education: We enhanced the resilience of adolescent girls in Madagascar to climate change and disaster risks, while also promoting biodiversity preservation and positive health and hygiene habits.

Preventing Child Marriage: We supported the Global Programme to End Child Marriage in providing life skills education to more than 6 million adolescent girls, ensuring that girls fully enjoy their childhood free from the risk of child marriage.

None of this would have been possible without you. Every donation, volunteer hour, and shared story has played a role in building this brighter future. We are proud of the progress we have made, but we know there is still more work to be done. As we look to the future, we are committed to expanding our support to end child marriage, recognizing exceptional women leaders through our new and continuing education programs, and advocating for the rights and opportunities of all women and girls.

Together, we can break down barriers, challenge inequalities, and open doors of opportunity. We are excited about the journey ahead and hope you will continue to stand with us as we strive to create a world where every woman and girl can shine.

Thank you for your ongoing support, passion and belief in our mission. Together, we are not just imagining a brighter future; we are building it.

With sincere gratitude,

In Focus: The Impact of the Global Programme to End Child Marriage

Conflict, climate change and other humanitarian crises drive increased risks for child marriage in the 12 focus countries of the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to End Child Marriage. Phase II of the Global Programme enhanced investments in and support for adolescent girls through strategies such as engaging key actors, promoting gender-responsive policies and catalyzing shifts towards positive gender norms.

BANGLADESH

In Bangladesh, a national adolescent strategy with ending child marriage as a key priority area has been developed. A Coastal National Plan of Action for the Adolescent Health Strategy 2020–2030 was finalized, and training for health service providers on gender- and age-specific adolescent health services was initiated.

BURKINA FASO

Burkina Faso is home to 3 million child brides. Of these, 500,000 married before the age of 15. Today, more than 10,000 community leaders have been trained to lead change to end child marriages. The Global Programme empowered 88,641 adolescent girls aged 15-19 through life skills training and equipment to engage in income generating activities.

ETHIOPIA

The Global Programme has reached more than 480,000 community members in Ethiopia, including boys, men and community gatekeepers such as faith-based organizations, with educational intervention and community dialogue.

GHANA

232 health-care facilities in Ghana, reaching over 2,200 pregnant girls and adolescent mothers, were supported with gender- and age-appropriate care and prevention services.

INDIA

India is home to the largest number of child brides in the world: 223 million child brides – a third of the global total, even though it is illegal for girls to marry under the age of 17. In India, about 10 million parents engaged in regular dialogue on responsive parenting through online platforms and community networks created to prevent and respond to child marriage and gender-based violence.

BURKINA FASO SIERRA LEONE
GHANA

MOZAMBIQUE

More than 2 million boys, girls, women and men in Mozambique participated in group education/dialogue sessions on the consequences of and alternatives to child marriage and the rights of adolescent girls and gender equality, created to prevent and respond to child marriage and gender-based violence.

NEPAL

8.5 million individuals in Nepal were reached through mass media messaging on child marriage, the rights of adolescent girls and gender equality.

NIGER

97 new villages in Niger acquired knowledge and life skills through their participation in educational discussion activities on themes relating to social mobilization, human rights, sexual and reproductive health, hygiene and sanitation, and traditional practices harmful to the health of women and girls.

SIERRE LEONE

An estimated 3.5 million people in Sierra Leone were reached through radio programs by the National Secretariat for the Reduction of Teenage Pregnancy, which disseminated key messages on protecting adolescent girls from child marriage, early pregnancy and gender-based violence.

UGANDA

In the last 25 years, Uganda has been a promising story in the journey to end child marriage. The percentage of 20 to 24-year old women who were married before 18 years of age decreased from 45% to 34%; however, this rate is not enough to meet the goal to eliminate child marriage by 2030.

YEMEN

More than 170,000 girls, boys, women and men in Yemen were reached with awareness-raising activities on genderbased violence and child marriage to instill social and behavior change.

ZAMBIA

The mentorship program in Zambia focuses specifically on ensuring that no one is left behind. More than 121 girls with disabilities were engaged to participate in safe spaces and were able to access information on sexual and reproductive health and rights and other life-skills sessions.

Adolescent Girls’ Health and Protection in Peru with UNICEF USA

Obstetrician Coordinator, Alcidia Tello, focuses on adolescent life and health in Masisea, Peru. When she came to Masisea, she was shocked to learn that the female health centers only focused on maternal and family health and did not have a specific focus on adolescent health. This region in Peru has the second highest percentage of teenage pregnancies and the highest number of HIV cases among young people in Indigenous communities.

One of the barriers Ms. Tello has overcome was reaching Indigenous teenagers in the rural communities who are unable to get to the health centers because of distance or lack of economic resources. She has now worked in this region for 10 years promoting adolescent health and caring for adolescents and HIV patients and providing educational sessions to the communities. The education sessions cover topics ranging from sex education to menstruation to HIV prevention.

The next step for Ms. Tello has been to expand the education program within the health centers to the parents in the communities to teach them about personal health and protection against health risks. “We want these adolescents to have a better future, we want young boys and girls to have better opportunities to become empowered adolescents, to be able to choose freely, to be free to give their opinions, to be listened to by authorities.”

Funding from Zonta International through donations to the Zonta Foundation for Women has helped Phase 2 of this project, which has continued to strengthen health and education services to ensure adolescents have access to comprehensive health and protection services in order to prevent unintended pregnancies and all forms of violence.

n 14,441 adolescents have benefitted from the program; more than half of them females and a third from Indigenous communities.

n 1,774 schools implemented the Prevention of Violence in Schools program.

n 78 health centers now have tools to collaborate with schools and promote students’ mental and sexual health.

n The number of adolescents screened for risks that may affect their mental health has increased 46% since the start of the program.

n The program plans to validate the proposal of the National Mental Health Plan in schools with the intervention regions as a means of future sustainability of the program’s mission.

Her Health and Dignity, Our Priority: Strengthening services for survivors of gender-based violence in Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste with UNFPA

Ana-Latu is a counselor at Tulau Counseling Service clinic in Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea. Tulau Counseling Service is volunteer-based and many of its volunteers make a dangerous journey through the mountains to the clinic to support survivors of genderbased violence and to provide life-saving care support.

As a counselor for nearly two decades, Ana-Latu understands how critical it is for providers like herself to receive support through programs like the Her Health and Dignity, Our Priority project, to continue the challenging work they do. Ana-Latu and her team provide a safe space where survivors affected by violence can share stories. “It’s not about me as a counselor, but always about the survivor,” Ana-Latu says. “They are usually overwhelmed by the abuse and are feeling unsafe and insecure. They want to talk about their feelings, and we are here to listen.”

Through the survivor-centered training she received from UNFPA and Zonta International, Ana-Latu came to understand how important it is for survivors to have accurate information and options for available services so they can be empowered to make their own choices. The training also helped her to realize some of the errors she has made in the past and how she can better provide assistance to survivors of violence in the future. “[Before attending the training] I would assume things, which were probably not what the survivor wanted! Providers need to hold back and only ask ‘What would you like us to do?’ Making assumptions about what her needs are is not survivor-centered support and care.”

Funding from Zonta International through donations to the Zonta Foundation for Women has enhanced the quality of services available to survivors of gender-based violence through the UNFPA Asia-Pacific Region.

n After project training, more than 90% of health practitioners in both Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea demonstrated on average at least 80% knowledge on survivor-centered principles for GBV response.

n 100% of project sites have functional referral pathways established in line with global guidelines.

n Availability and quality of gender-based violence response services increased in three provinces.

n National and local governmental stakeholders received technical support on strengthening GBV services.

n 1,183 community members attended community awareness activities on GBV by the end of 2023.

Engaging Girls on Climate Change in Madagascar with UNICEF USA

Eleven-year-old Florentine resides in southern Madagascar and goes to one of the five schools implementing UNICEF’s program on Engaging Girls on Climate Change in Madagascar supported by Zonta International. Her school has introduced basic WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) services through this program and has taught Florentine about washing her hands, cleaning, managing waste, and even gardening.

Madagascar is the 4th most vulnerable country to climate change in the world, which has directly impacted water resources and access to improved sanitation and hygiene, all of which affect children’s health, nutrition, education and well-being. “I wash my hands because I know it is important to wash your hands with soap and water after going to the toilet,” said Florentine. Through WASH education, children are learning about the importance of water and how addressing climate change is important to their future.

Florentine and her classmates are also learning about hygiene habits and menstrual health and hygiene through an educational game called Ika’lio, which improves knowledge of, attitudes towards and practices around menstrual hygiene. Teachers, supported by UNICEF, have integrated this game into their lessons to make learning about hygiene more fun. It has become an uplifting and enjoyable game that has brought levity to this sensitive topic. As Florentine walks the halls of her school, she can see the walls colored with educational posters that teach and encourage respect for hygiene and the environment. She and her classmates will grow up in a world where hygiene and sanitation are not foreign topics and will encourage others in their communities and families the importance of WASH to daily life.

Funding from Zonta International through donations to the Zonta Foundation for Women has enabled UNICEF Madagascar to enhance the resilience of adolescent girls to climate change and disaster risks, while also promoting biodiversity preservation and positive health and hygiene habits.

n Five schools from the Ambovombe and Beloha districts participated in the program and now have management committees to monitor the program in place.

n Approximately 2,400 children (1,100 boys and 1,300 girls) benefitted from WASH services.

n 1,500 teachers from 700 target schools participated in climate and WASH training.

n Gardens have been created, planted, and are now producing vegetables for students to harvest.

n Garbage bins have been set up at the schools to separate diverse types of waste.

Global Programme to End Child Marriage Phase II

In the Kapilvastu District of Nepal, 15-year-old Rachana trained to be a facilitator with the Rupantaran program, which helps girls in the community see the value of continuing their education and waiting until a mature age to get married. She was asked by the leaders of the Rupantaran program to train at a young age. Her parents were afraid to send her alone to take on such a big responsibility, but now they see how important her work is, and they are extremely proud of her.

The Rupantaran program counsels young girls in the community, and as a facilitator Rachana has stopped three child marriages in her community. Two of these cases were her close friends. The third was a young girl who was a part of the Rupantaran program and came to Rachana for help. Rachana gathered a group of girls to go and talk to this younger girl’s mother, but the mother would not listen. So, Rachana decided to reach out to the staff of UNICEF’s partner organization, Siddhartha Social Development Center, who helped to further convince the girl’s parents to stop the marriage. They explained the severity of child marriage and the commitment it is to be bound to someone for life. Eventually the girl’s parents decided not to go through with the forced marriage. “It’s something that makes me feel very proud, very happy, especially when I see that she is still continuing to go to school and she visits me at home regularly too.”

Rachana continues to work with girls in sessions to become independent and confident women and to continue their education. In the future, Rachana plans to study hotel management and become a manager, while still continuing the social work that she is doing now.

Funding from Zonta International through donations to the Zonta Foundation for Women has supported Phase II of the Global Programme to End Child Marriage and enabled UNICEF and UNFPA to scale up implementation of activities to achieve the ultimate goal of ensuring that girls fully enjoy their childhood free from the risk of child marriage.

n More than 6.3 million adolescent girls (aged 10-19) received life skills and sexuality education.

n More than 155 million individuals were reached by traditional mass media and social media messaging on child marriage.

n In Zambia, 1,244 community welfare assistant committees were established with the support of the programme.

n In Ethiopia, over 1,300 local women development groups have been supported to drive change in their communities.

Committed to Ensuring Education Equality for All Women and Girls

Zonta International firmly believes that education is a human right and has, therefore, lifted it up as one of Zonta’s four key focus areas in its 2023-2030 strategic plan. Throughout the international service projects, advocacy work both globally and locally, and educational funding that Zonta International commits to each year, education leads as a driving force for change. It has the power to save and improve lives of women and girls, which leads to healthier families and stronger communities. Women play a vital role in the growth of their communities, and in turn their local economies when educated and holding positions of leadership and decision-making on an equal basis with men.

Thanks to our generous donors, since 1938, the Zonta Foundation for Women has provided more than US$15.6 million to women in aerospace engineering and space sciences, business, public affairs, and STEM fields.

From June 2023 to May 2024, the Foundation contributed US$820,000 to support 134 women in pursuing their educational and professional goals through the Amelia Earhart Fellowship, Jane M. Klausman (JMK) Women in Business Scholarship, Women in STEM Scholarship and Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award.*

*The Young Women in Public Affairs Award was renamed the Zonta Young Women in Leadership Award at the 2024 Zonta International Convention in Brisbane, Australia.

Amelia Earhart Fellowship

US$300,000 awarded to 30 women from 11 countries

STEM outreach and education for young women has been a passion of mine ever since my first engineering lecture in undergraduate [school]. I could count on just my two hands how many women were in that lecture of over 100 students. Wherever I go and whatever I do, I always aim to pave an easier path for women coming after me. [The Amelia Earhart Fellowship] will help me do that. It’s proof that I’m, doing something right.

Michaela Hemming

Klausman

Women in Business Scholarship

US$185,000 awarded to 37 women from 18 countries

I share the scholarship’s goal of promoting women’s opportunities to pursue a career in an industry that is still predominantly male-dominated. I have personally embarked on my career in business and have experienced the challenges of lacking female role models and the complexities it entails when trying to shape one’s own future career. Therefore, I am immensely grateful that you have chosen to support me on my journey to becoming a female representative in the industry.

As a member of Zonta since 1999, I know that we can only make a change in the lives of women and girls by combining our efforts: through our projects, our personal engagement and, of course, also with our individual donations.

As a Zontian, I am inspired by Zonta’s mission to build a better world for women and girls. With my corporate background, I appreciate that resources are required to achieve goals. Whatever little I contribute, adds to the whole, to make that difference. The results from Zonta projects around the world speak for themselves.

Membership in Zonta International means devoting time, talent, and resources to a mission and vision I am deeply committed to. Regular donations to the Zonta Foundation for Women fulfill the resource part of that commitment. If only we could fulfill our mission in my lifetime! I choose to invest in the Zonta 1919 Legacy Circle to help make the world a better place for women and girls both while I’m here and after.

2024 Fiscal Year—Financial Review

The Zonta Foundation for Women (‘Foundation’) 2024 fiscal year ended on 31 May 2024, the second year of the 2022–2024 Biennium. The 2024 fiscal year reflects much improved performance over the 2023 fiscal year when the Foundation was emerging from the global pandemic which dominated the prior biennium.

Fundraising contributions for the 2024 fiscal year and for the biennium in total were ahead of budget for the first time since the 2012–2014 Biennium, reflecting donor support of Zonta’s mission and causes.

Expenditure was closely managed, and investment performance was much improved over the 2023 fiscal year. Overall, the Foundation achieved a surplus of US$3.0m. The Foundation has strong reserves and continues to be financially sound.

The consolidated financial statements for 31 May 2024 received an unqualified opinion from the audit firm, CliftonLarsonAllen, which confirms that the financial statements present a fair and accurate picture of the organization and comply with generally accepted accounting principles in the United States. These can be found at www.zonta.org/Web/About/Financial_Information/Audited_Financial_Statement.

Financial highlights for the Zonta Foundation for Women

CONTRIBUTIONS

n Donor support was strong, with contributions of US$2.6 million in 2024 for our international service and education programs. This was ahead of budget, and a significant increase on the 2023 fiscal year (US$2.1 million), reflecting the commitment of donors to Zonta’s mission and causes.

n Endowments continued to grow through contributions and planned giving of US$0.4 million in 2024 (2023 US$0.25 million).

n Zonta has retained its GuideStar Platinum rating and met all Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance and Charity Navigator criteria, which are critical to ensuring the confidence of existing and potential donors.

PROGRAMS

n Continued support to our partner projects (Global Programme to End Child Marriage, Adolescent Girls’ Health and Protection in Peru, Her Health and Dignity, Our Priority: Strengthening services for survivors of GBV in Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste, and Engaging Girls on Climate Change in Madagascar), and educational programs of US$0.8 million (2023 US$3.8 million)1

n 134 (2023 118) educational scholarships, fellowships and awards were provided to women and girls in 33 (2023 38) countries.

INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE

n The 2024 fiscal year reflected improved investment returns as investment markets performed better than the 2023 fiscal year.

n Our investment advisors have worked closely with Zonta to ensure our funds are invested and managed in line with the board approved investment strategies.

n Investment returns improved during 2024 with annualized returns across the portfolio ranging from positive 8.9% (2023 negative 4.24%2) for the General Endowment and Amelia Earhart Endowment Funds to positive 5.8% (2023 negative 4.0%3) for the long-term investment funds. The five-year outlook indicates a positive 5%+ return.

n As a result, the 2024 fiscal year includes investment earnings of US$1.2 million (compared with negative investment earnings of US$0.7 million in 2023).

Zonta continues to maintain a strong overall financial position with enough assets to cover our obligations and to ensure the long-term resilience of the organization.

Respectfully submitted,
