Special thanks to Ana VeigaMilton and the Zoo Miami staff, for without these people, this publication would not be possible.

Here at the Zoo, we have always been guided by the animals that we are committed to protect and learn from. So, we are reminded that in the wild, many species face uncertainty every day. In response, they find fascinating and creative ways to survive and thrive. Many turn to their herds and packs to form united fronts, while others recognize the advantages of isolation and solitary lifestyles. We turn to them for encouragement, like our aptly named baby koala, “Hope”, who peeked out of his mother’s pouch at a time when the world needed an optimistic reminder. Through the fires in Australia and the difficulties the Coronavirus brings, we remain hopeful and steadfast in our mission. We truly believe that great things are often born out of adversity. Our gates may be closed, but we have been inspired to find new, virtual ways to remain connected with our community, as we continue to educate and share the wonders of wildlife. Our animal care staff continues to ensure that our animals are well taken care of during this time and they have been sharing some wonderful behind-the-scenes videos that you can find on our social media channels. We have also recently launched “Zoocademy with Ron Magill”, a series of videos and lessons containing fun information and learning activities for parents to do with their children at home. We look forward to our guests returning to our walkways to visit our animal residents. In these unprecedented times, we are even more grateful for the support of our Zoo Miami Family and we hope you continue to remain engaged and hopeful, too. On behalf of Zoo Miami and Zoo Miami Foundation, we wish you and your family health and happiness. We will see you again soon!

African Painted Dogs On December 31, 2019, a litter of highly endangered African painted dog puppies was born at Zoo Miami. One male and two females were born to three-year-old mom “Little Foot.” This is her second litter and she’s done an excellent job of caring for her puppies. Their father is nine-year-old “Evander.”

Baby Meerkats Make Zoo Miami History

While Zoo Miami is closed, you can watch them live on Zoo Miami’s Meerkam! 4

For the first time in Zoo Miami history, meerkats have been born at Zoo Miami! On January 18, 2020, two meerkat pups were born to eight-year-old mother “Yam Yam.” They currently share the habitat with three unrelated brothers, named “Gizmo,” “Joe,” and “Diego.” Any of these males could be the father, but all of them have worked cooperatively with Yam Yam to care for the newborns. On March 18, these pups received their neonatal exams, which included getting weighed, microchipped, eyes & teeth checked, and genders confirmed (we’ve got a boy and a girl!)

Motherhood in the Wild In some parts of the animal kingdom, the bond between mothers and their offspring is the fiercest relationship you can find. Just like humans, many animal moms have been observed going to great lengths to protect, teach and care for their young!

Orangutans Orangutan offspring have a rare and lengthy “childhood,” sometimes being carried by their moms until they are five years old and learning from her until they are around ten! Independent female orangutans have even been observed visiting their mothers until they are 15 – 16 years old (even teens need their moms!)

Lionesses

In the wild, pride lionesses sometimes synchronize their reproduction cycles to rear and nurse their young together! Lionesses are also known to fiercely defend their cubs against any threat, even if it’s a male lion trying to take over the pride!

Matchie’s tree kangaroo After they’re born, joeys crawl into their mother’s pouch to nurse and remain there for about ten months. While nursing, the moms will clean her pouch and groom her baby often.

Toshi’s rd

B-day! This past February, our very own endangered black rhino, “Toshi,” turned 43 years old, making him the oldest male black rhino in the US!

This Zoo Miami veteran came to us in 1983 all the way from Asa Zoological Park in Japan, where he was born. He’s since retired and spends his time relaxing in an off-exhibit area at Zoo Miami, where he still enjoys special treats and the occasional back scratch! Zoo Miami staff and volunteers threw Toshi a birthday party complete with some of his favorite treats, including cake that was specially prepared by the zoo nutrition team! He also received ice blocks with frozen fruits and veggies as the zoo team sang him Happy Birthday! 9

“Hope” is Born AT ZOO MIAMI Serving as a beacon of optimism and a reminder of why we fight for the future of wildlife, the baby was given the name “Hope.” From November to February, the entire world watched on as devasting bushfires raged through Australia, affecting thousands of people, billions of animals and their homes and habitats. During their summer season, dozens of fires erupted in New South Wales, rapidly spreading and becoming some of the most intense and destructive fires on record. Together, the world mourned the loss of wildlife. Together, we contributed what we could and waited for relief. In January 2020, amidst all of the tragic news, a tiny face of one of Australia’s most iconic species peeked out of his mother’s pouch to greet the world, right here at Zoo Miami. For the third time in the zoo’s history and the first time in over 28 years, a surviving koala joey was born at the zoo. Although the baby was actually born back in May of 2019, this was the first time he emerged completely from his mother’s pouch. Serving as a beacon of optimism and a reminder of why we fight for the future of wildlife, the baby was given the name “Hope.”

Baby Hope was born to fouryear-old mother “Rinny” and eight-year-old father “Milo”.

Here at Zoo Miami, we celebrate and honor each and every birth and life of our animal residents. But of course, some are just extra special. True to his name, our baby offered hope to those in Australia and around the world, and he was even featured on the Today Show to continue spreading the good news and encouragement. Baby Hope became a symbol for a positive future and Zoo Miami Foundation, along with the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment, donors and volunteers were thrilled to raise over $12,000 for Australian relief efforts.

Because koalas are marsupials, they have very short pregnancies, lasting only around 30 days. However, when the baby is born, at about the size of a jellybean, it is practically in an embryonic state. Totally hairless, with non-developed eyes and tiny limbs, it makes its way into the mother’s pouch where it remains for about six months to continue developing.

Social Distancing THE WILD WAY Six feet isn’t enough for these animals who know the value of alone time. Throughout the world of wildlife, social behaviors vary and dynamics within groups can be fascinating and complex. But then, there are those creatures who keep things simple by embracing independence and a solitary life.

Tigers

These big cats are long-ranging explorers that claim and maintain their own territories while still roaming wider areas.

Black Rhinos

Outside of mating or females raising their calves, black rhinos are solitary or only semi-social

Armadillos Sloths These aren’t your party animals. These slow and shy creatures spend most of their time alone, sleeping and hanging around in tropical trees.

Who needs to snuggle? Armadillos are solitary critters and pretty much spend most of their time sleeping alone. 15
