Special thanks to Ana VeigaMilton and the Zoo Miami staff, for without these people, this publication would not be possible.
This year, we hope to expand and deepen Zoo Miami’s impact in new and innovative ways. As we plan to enter the public phase of our Connecting for Life Campaign, we turn our focus to creating a state-of-the-art Sumatran tiger habitat. This highly anticipated project will require that we raise $4 million, 10% of which will be dedicated to in-country tiger conservation to protect the remaining 400 Sumatran tigers in the wild. This new space will connect our visitors to this majestic species like never before, with a viewing pavilion that brings you nose-to-nose with our tigers. We are well on our way to meeting our goal, and I am confident that our vision will inspire our supporters to help us take the next step. As we think of ways to broaden our horizons, we are also excited to share that Zoo Miami Foundation will be launching a curated travel program that will bring guests around the world to places where we support local conservation efforts. These trips, led by Ron Magill, will be truly inspiring and memorable experiences that we hope will leave guests with a deeper connection to the wildlife we proudly care for right here at Zoo Miami. I have no doubt that 2024 will be a year for the books. These new developments, along with the extraordinary occurrences that happen at Zoo Miami – like the recent birth of our female Sumatran tiger cub – simply would not be possible without our supporters, partners, and friends like you!

In Florida: Mission Everglades, we celebrate the rich diversity of native Florida trees and plants that have evolved to thrive in the state’s unique conditions, including heat, drought, humidity, soils, and wildlife. Here, you’ll encounter a variety of Florida native trees, like live oak, mahogany, gumbo limbo, slash pine, bald cypress, mangroves, sea grape, and green buttonwood.
Within our Critter Connection, explore an extensive collection of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees carefully chosen to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. In this garden, you’ll discover a range of nectar and host plants that support the entire life cycle of butterflies.
Bromeliad Collection
Succulent Garden
These plants are known for their tropical appearance and are easy to care for, making them excellent choices for indoor houseplants. They can flourish year-round in tropical climates and can also thrive during the summer in more extreme climates.
Our latest addition is our succulent garden in the Africa lobe, showcasing succulents and cacti from around the world! Due to their desert origins, these plants are better equipped to withstand extreme weather conditions compared to most other species.

Remembering Berani
With profound sadness, Zoo Miami is mourning the passing of “Berani,” the 15-year-old Sumatran tiger who came to us in 2013 as part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP) recommendation. Berani, who had been very lethargic and had lost his appetite over several days, was brought to Zoo Miami’s Animal Hospital for a series of examinations and tests. The series of procedures included radiographs, ultrasounds, blood and urine collection, and an endoscopy. Unfortunately, test results revealed the heartbreaking news that Berani was suffering from cancer of the
8
spleen. Sadly, due to his advanced age and extremely poor prognosis for any improvement, the very difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him to provide him the dignity in death that he displayed throughout his life. This regal patriarch leaves behind quite a legacy. As part of the SSP, Berani was paired with a female named “Leeloo,” and together, they sired a male cub named “Satu” in 2015, a female cub named “Ndari” in 2021, and “Lani,” the female cub recently born in September 2023. In addition to his offspring, Berani will be remembered for the impressions he made on countless Zoo Miami visitors, serving as a wonderful representation for his species.

As our Zoo Miami family mourns the loss of Berani, we are grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from our Miami community and beyond. Sumatran tigers are part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) and Berani’s legacy will live on through his offspring.
Plans are finalized to add critical space to our existing tiger habitat, introducing an Asian-themed gateway and viewing pavilion with glass walls for “nose-tonose” experiences. This expansion will also enable us to house more tigers long-term while still providing exceptional care. As leaders in conservation, we have dedicated $400,000 of this campaign to saving Sumatran tigers in the wild. In honor of Berani, your gift will help us complete the Tiger Habitat Expansion Project, with the first $250,000 matched by our good friends at Publix Super Market Charities! Gifts of $10,000 or more will be recognized in the expansion.

Tiger Cub Born AT ZOO MIAMI
On Thanksgiving Day, Zoo Miami was thrilled to officially announce the birth of a critically endangered Sumatran tiger, born on September 6th, 2023. This announcement, which came shortly after the devastating loss of the cub’s father, Berani, is a bittersweet reminder of the circle of life.
The cub was born in a secluded den to 11-yearold mother, Leeloo. The pair remained isolated with minimal disturbances to allow them time to bond. Then, on November 7th, zoo veterinarians conducted the cub’s first physical examination, in addition to the administration of vaccines and implantation of a microchip. During this exam, the cub was identified as a female. This is Leeloo’s third cub. She previously gave birth to a male cub named Satu in 2015, and a female cub named N’dari in 2021. Both of these cubs have since moved to other accredited institutions as part of a carefully managed Species Survival Plan (SSP). The late Berani is the father of all three of Leeloo’s cubs. On January 15, 2024, following a landslide vote by our Zoo Miami community, the new cub’s name was announced! As a special blend of her parents’ names, the cub has been named “Lani,” which means ‘Heaven’ or ‘Sky’ in Filipino. 10
Leeloo and Lani are now being given access to their outdoor habitat from 11 AM to 2 PM daily! During her first two days with habitat access, the cub demonstrated hesitation and caution, exploring the area immediately surrounding the doorway without going into the habitat. However, each day, she demonstrates more bravery.
The public is invited to come and see if they can catch a glimpse of this precious new cub. Remember, it will be up to the animals as to whether they come out of the denning area into public viewing. 11

Baby Boom
AT ZOO MIAMI
While our tiger cub has certainly taken over the spotlight, we have had quite a few additional births we’ve recently celebrated at Zoo Miami! Get to know our new cubs, calves, and babies!
GIANT ELAND
On November 18th, a rare giant eland was born, weighing in at 53 pounds. The male calf was the second offspring for the eight-year-old mother, and the first for his seven-year-old father. The following month, two more calves were born, one on December 4th and another on December 5th!
NYALA
On November 7th, after an approximately seven-month pregnancy, a female nyala calf was born. Soon after, on November 10th, a male calf was born! Both calves and mothers have been doing well.
14
SAKI MONKEY
On September 27th, white-faced saki monkey was born to 13-year-old parents “Alejandra” and “Mack.” This new addition can be seen in their habitat at the Flooded Forest Building at the zoo’s Amazon & Beyond exhibit.
BANTENG
On October 10th, zoo visitors got a special treat as an endangered banteng was born right on the public habitat! The mother, “Phyllis,” gave birth to a female calf, who has been doing very well since.
SLOTH BEARS
On the morning of December 4th, a four-year-old sloth bear named “Kematee” gave birth to two cubs, born a few hours apart. This pair are the first offspring for both Kematee and their 11-year-old father, “Hank.” 15
ANimaL Hospital VISITS HOWLER MONKEYS
On October 24, 2023, Zoo Miami’s pair of howler monkeys underwent routine physical exams as part of a carefully managed preventative medicine program. Both individuals – a 14-year-old male named “Rico” and a 19-year-old female named “Lenny” – went through a series of radiographs, had their blood collected and had general dental exams as well as ultrasounds to evaluate organ health. They also received tetanus shots and a tuberculosis test. Lenny had two teeth extracted as well as the surgical removal of a small mass to be examined for any potential problems that may be associated with it. Both individuals have since been returned to their habitat where they are recovering from the procedures without incident.
LION
On October 26, 2023, “Jabari,” a 16-year-old, 423-pound male lion was transported to the Animal Hospital to receive an annual physical exam. The exam included the collection of blood and urine, radiographs, an ultrasound, dental cleaning and routine eye and ear exams. He also had a minor manicure by having his claws trimmed and cleaned. In addition, he received vaccinations for rabies, canine distemper and feline distemper. Other than some small skin issues that were biopsied in an abundance of caution, Jabari appears to be in good health and has since returned to his habitat. 16
