In 2019, we celebrated several animal births, welcoming new members to our wild family. In January, a litter of endangered African painted dogs was born at the Zoo, starting the year on an exciting note! In April, we welcomed a greater one-horned Indian rhino calf – the first successful birth of her species anywhere in recorded history to be the result of induced ovulation and artificial insemination. This calf – named Akuti – captured the hearts of so many worldwide as she was quite the media sensation! Then, in July, the birth of a two-toed sloth made history again, as the first to be born in Zoo Miami history. The list goes on, and includes several giraffes, zebras, hoofstock, and recently – a flamingo chick! In the years that lay ahead of us, Zoo Miami & Zoo Miami Foundation are committed to strengthening our efforts to conserve and protect wildlife around the world and educate our community to do the same. To begin this year, we’ll be opening the popular Dinosaurs LIVE! exhibit, bringing several life-sized replicas of these prehistoric creatures to Zoo Miami. This exciting exhibit is a fun and interactive way to reflect on the past to save species for tomorrow. Of course, our achievements each year are only possible with the continued support of our community. As we’ve just celebrated our most successful Give Miami Day to date, we are more confident than ever in the power and dedication of our supporters. We are incredibly grateful and look forward to the strides and impacts we will continue to make together.

SHOP SUSTAINABLE Every purchase you make can have an impact on the future of the world we live in and share with wildlife. Did you know that the use and production of unsustainable palm oil is destroying tropical rainforests around the world? These forests are home to orangutans, tigers, and more!

ACTION:

Download & consult the Sustainable Palm Oil Shopping app

RECYCLE SUPPORT CONSERVATION PROJECTS When you contribute to a local or global conservation initiative, you are helping to further the work and impact. Did you know that Zoo Miami has conservation & research projects dedicated to helping Florida flamingos, harpy eagles, Florida panthers, and more? CLICK HERE to learn more about our programs.

ACTION:

Donate to one of Zoo Miami’s conservation initiatives or our general fund HERE

We’re not just talking about your plastic water bottles. Did you know that recycling your cell phone can help wildlife? Mining for minerals like coltan, which is found in cell phones, impacts the habitats of animals like mountain gorillas.

Flamingo Chick Hatches AT ZOO MIAMI

by Matt McHale, Breeding/ Propogation Animal Care Coordinator

For the first time in over ten years, Zoo Miami has hatched and raised a baby flamingo! This bird was very lucky and wouldn’t be here if not for the keen observation from the Florida Everglades staff and the front office staff, who helped with egg sightings. The egg this flamingo hatched from was found in the water adjacent to its nest. Flamingos build tall nest mounds shaped like cones, with a small indent where the egg sits. This flock was recently moved to its new exhibit and sometimes, disagreements over nest sites and eggs can occur, resulting in some physical aggression. During these fights, the eggs often fall out of their nests. This is how our egg found its way into the water.

10

Keepers quickly got the egg to the Breeding Center, where the staff set the egg in an incubator. They weren’t holding out much hope since this was the 11th egg they had set this year with no luck in fertility. Sure enough, after six days, the keepers could start seeing the embryo develop! After 31 days (on September 25, 2019), the flamingo hatched inside the breeding center’s brooder box. The hatched egg shell was sent to a lab for DNA sexing and within a week, the lab informed us that we had a male flamingo chick. This was the beginning of a lot of work for the breeding center staff and the zoo nutrition center. Zoo Miami’s nutritionist, Dr. Treiber, painstakingly put together a formula and a plan for the flamingo as it developed. The nutrition staff made all of the chick’s formula, helped with the transition to pellets, and made the whole process easy so that the breeding center could focus on the chick. Breeding center keepers had the awesome responsibility of feeding this flamingo using a gavage tube and a syringe. With a squirming flamingo, this was not the easiest job! As they grow, flamingos are walked around all day by their parents to develop muscles and learn how to be a flamingo. So, breeding center keepers walked the flamingo many times a day to ensure the legs would develop properly. The flamingo chick follows the keepers close because he has imprinted on them. The breeding center was even adapted for this flamingo’s needs. One of our more construction-savvy keepers, Terry Casanova, constructed a 20’ x 4’ sand box for the little guy to walk and run around in.

After another few weeks, the breeding center had a lanky grey flamingo about two feet tall that was ready for his next adventure over in a holding pen in the zoo’s Florida: Mission Everglades! He will grow adult flight feathers that will remain gray for the first year before the caretenoids from his food will start to turn the feathers pink. For now, the little guy gets walked from his holding pen to the adult pen where he gets to spend some time learning the sounds and sights of a flock of flamingos. Very soon, he will be integrated into the flock so next time you are at the zoo, look out for the only grey flamingo in the flock. That’s him! Caribbean flamingos are common in the wild but they are closely monitored by zoos and aquariums for genetics and breeding as part of a special program. This program, the Species Survival Plan (SSP), ensure the pairs that breed successfully are genetically diverse so that we can keep a sustainable population in Zoos. These programs are great conservation measures that make it possible for zoos to maintain populations without pulling birds from the wild.

Special Thanks to

Joshua Randle, Susanne Gigler, Susan Kong, Nicolle Mierisch, Dolora Batchelor, Caroline Kistler, and Ezequial Bugallo for the successful hand-raising and many walks you guys helped with.

A Very Special Kiwi Naming Ceremony!

On November 4, 2019, Zoo Miami welcomed Her Excellency Rosemary Banks, New Zealand Ambassador to the United States. Along with a special delegation, she traveled from Washington, D.C., for a special naming ceremony for the first kiwi ever to hatch in the state of Florida! Ambassador Banks was accompanied by Mr. Chris McKenzie and Mr. Paora Haitana, both iwi leaders of the indigenous Maori people, who traveled from New Zealand to perform the official naming ceremony, as well as Nancy Gilbert, New Zealand Honorary Consul to the State of Florida. The historic kiwi was named “Paora in honor of the iwi leader who has dedicated himself to wildlife conservation in New Zealand. 14

This special kiwi was hatched on April 9, 2019, from a fertilized egg that was received from the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. The egg was sent to Zoo Miami as part of a special loan agreement between the Smithsonian National Zoo and the Government of New Zealand, which is where kiwis are naturally found. Kiwis are the unofficial symbol of the country and the nickname given to its citizens. Every kiwi that is found outside of the country remains the property of New Zealand and the indigenous Maori people there. Kiwis are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

Join us on an after-hours walking tour, as our safari guide takes you on a journey to discover over 10 of these prehistoric creatures. Wear comfy shoes in case we have to make a quick getaway!
