LETTER FROM THE CEO Summer has officially arrived at Zoo Miami, and it’s easy to tell by the flood of excited Zoo Campers on our walkways, guests cooling down in our water play areas and of course, our upcoming $10 Days! Every year, we’re thrilled to celebrate both our country’s independence, and Zoo Miami’s anniversary by offering our community discounted admission and kicking off the summer with music, giveaways and so much wildlife to see. This year, $10 Days will be held July 4 – 8, and we’ll be celebrating our 38th anniversary! Meanwhile, a sold-out Summer Zoo Camp is a terrific example of how our education programs have been shining over the past year! Our awardwinning camp gives kids the opportunity to explore, learn and embark on adventures, all while connecting with nature and wildlife. We are also truly grateful to The Batchelor Foundation for providing scholarships and support to Zoo Camp year-round, giving even more kids the opportunity to experience this unique adventure. Throughout each year, education is a huge focus and component of our mission. Thanks to sponsors like The Peacock Foundation, Carnival Foundation, Shepard Broad Foundation, Coral Gables Community Foundation and Whole Foods Market, we can impact students in schools across South Florida, by providing STEM programs and opportunities for them to connect and commit to conserving wildlife. Of course, our animal residents are what truly makes Zoo Miami. We’ve been lucky and happy to welcome many new members to our animal family, including healthy babies like a giant eland, sable antelope and Somali wild ass. Plus, a pair of orangutans named “Kumang” and “Bella” from New York and a 6,300-pound Asian elephant named “Ongard” all the way from Australia! These births and successful arrivals are a true testament to the hard work of our team at Zoo Miami, as they continue to put our animals’ well-being above all else. Zoo Miami Foundation’s dedication to our mission, sharing the wonders of wildlife and helping to conserve it, have earned us a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator for the third consecutive year. This prestigious award verifies that our organization exceeds industry standards, adheres to best practices and executes our mission with financial efficiency. We could not be more proud of our work, and the people who dedicate themselves to it.

Thank You! To the Peacock Foundation for a very generous $35,000 grant to Zoo Miami Foundation. The funds will provide meaningful learning experiences to high school students through the Conservation Teen Scientist (CTS) and ZOOM Ahead programs.

ZOOm Ahead

Our CTS and ZOOM Ahead programs aim to promote informal education, build life skills and offer STEM career-focused learning opportunities for high school age students. The CTS program gives 9th – 12th graders the opportunity to develop practical life skills, including public speaking and team building, and to increase their knowledge of environmental sciences at Zoo Miami. Teens learn to interpret at animal exhibits and assist with customer service and events while networking with experts in their field, receiving community service hours and animal handling training. ZOOM Ahead is a new education initiative at Zoo Miami Foundation that will impact hundreds of high school juniors at Title I schools. This program will focus on providing an educational opportunity and greater understanding of what options are available locally, emphasizing the importance of practical skills, hands-on learning, scholastic achievement and networking. ZOOM Ahead intends to increase awareness of zoological park careers like animal science, veterinary medicine, business operations, horticulture, and more! 11

Senegalese Black Eyed Pea Salad with Mango and Avocado

Serves 4 Ready in 15 minutes

West Kendall Baptist Hospital’s Executive Chef Rod Knight

This recipe is inspired by the West African nation Senegal. This particular dish can be found along the coastal cities, and easily pairs with fish, shellfish, or grilled chicken. The addition of sliced mango and avocado gives it a special South Florida spin!

Nutritional Information

Instructions:

276 Calories / Serving Fat 101 cal Carbs 144 cal Protein 31 cal

1. Combine black eyed peas, mango, avocado, parsley, bell pepper, habanero pepper in a bowl and toss. 2. Add lime juice, olive oil, salt and pepper and mix thoroughly 3. Refrigerate until ready to serve (if planning to use the salad at a much later time, do not add the avocado in step one, wait until it’s time to serve and then mix in the avocado)

Ingredients: • 1 can black eyed peas, drained and rinsed • 1 medium size mango, peeled and sliced • 1 avocado, sliced • 1 cup parsley, chopped • 1 bell pepper, chopped • 1 habanero pepper, minced, to taste • 1 lime, juiced • 1 Tbsp olive oil • Salt, to taste • Pepper, to taste 14

With summer right around the corner, lighter meals are in demand. Pairing a protein with a well-balanced salad is always a quick and easy choice.

Powered by the Sun! We’re putting all of this South Florida sunshine to good use at Zoo Miami! We recently celebrated a new addition: FPL SolarNow trees and a large FPL SolarNow canopy, made possible through Florida Power and Light Company’s SolarNow program. In total, 200 solar panels were installed!

These solar arrays generate zero-emissions energy, provide shade for our guests, and inspire them to learn more about solar energy. Our installation is now the largest FPL SolarNow project in Miami-Dade County! 17
