Our Conservation and Research team continues to do important work, recently making a breakthrough in an age old mystery about the origins of Florida’s flamingos. Our very own Frank Ridgley and Steven Whitfield partnered with other scientists and researchers to publish a study in the American Ornithological Society’s journal “The Condor”. Their work gave some groundbreaking insight into the history of these iconic birds. Meanwhile, our park continues to grow and improve, as we celebrate the opening of our first indoor restaurant Nourish305. This trendy, Wynwoodinspired restaurant is located at the entrance to Zoo Miami, giving visitors views of the Florida: Mission Everglades as they dine on made-to-order salads, flatbreads and sandwiches. As always, we continue to host fun events for families to enjoy at Zoo Miami. We’ve just wrapped up our Egg Safari weekend, an event we and our guests truly look forward to each year. Once again, our egg hunt was the largest and “greenest” in Miami, as all of our eggs were eco-friendly and fully biodegradable, filled with palm-oil free or sustainable palm oil candy. Now, we look forward to our annual Earth Day celebration, Party for the Planet in April, and for the grown-ups, the popular New Times Brew at the Zoo is back this May. The evolution of Zoo Miami and our accomplishments along the way are a direct result of the hard work of our team, and of course, the support of our donors, Members and fans. We look forward to continue making strides together with you.
Special thanks to Ana VeigaMilton and the Zoo Miami staff, for without these people, this publication would not be possible.

FREE admission when you turn in a cell phone for our ECO-CELL phone recycling program! First 500 people each day get a free gift courtesy of The Panthers Foundation.
Did you know? Every cell phone turned in will also help save gorillas!
Cell phones include coltan, a mineral extracted in the deep forests of Congo in central Africa, home to the world's endangered lowland gorillas. Fueled by the worldwide cell phone boom, Congo's coltan mining business has in recent years led to a dramatic reduction of animal habitat and the rampant slaughter of great apes. By turning in your cell phone, we can hopefully reduce the need for additional coltan … and help protect the gorillas.

Is there an Animal Doctor in the House? A few of Zoo Miami’s animals recently paid the hospital a visit for exams and procedures to keep them in tip top shape. Bocco the 28-year-old chimpanzee underwent an ultrasound examination to determine the cause of localized swelling in one of his legs. The exam was performed by Dr. Forrest (Woody) Hayes, assisted by Dr. Dewey Carpenter. Zoo Miami Veterinarian Dr. Marisa Bezijan also oversaw the anesthesia and performed a dental cleaning and routine blood collection. Early indications of the exam did not locate any blood clots but suggest that Bocco is exhibiting typical symptoms associated with heart disease for an animal of his age. Once further tests are completed, that information will be used to formulate a treatment protocol best suited to his condition. Gabe the 21-year-old Malayan tapir received a double root canal on two broken lower canine teeth. In the wild, these situations can lead to serious infection and even death. The procedure was performed by Dr. Jan Bellows from All Pets Dental and fourth-year dental resident Dr. Elizabeth McMorran. They were assisted by Zoo Miami Associate Veterinarians Dr. Marisa Bezijan and Dr. Gaby Flacke. The procedure went very well, and is believed to be the first double root canal ever done on a Malayan tapir!
Quibble the 18-year-old porcupine underwent an eye surgery, and had his badly overgrown teeth filed down while immobilized. Unfortunately, the main procedure was to remove a badly diseased eye. The procedure was performed by veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Cherlene Delgado, and Zoo Miami Associate Veterinarian Dr. Gaby Flacke, assisted by University of Tennessee veterinary student Jenna Moe. 5

Native to Florida
Flamingos have come to be recognized as an iconic Florida symbol, with the Miami Vice flair of their hot pink feathers. But in truth, there’s been an ongoing debate over the past few decades about their true native origin. Spotting flamingos in the wild in Florida is actually very rare, and when they do turn up, many believe them to be escapees from captive populations or perhaps wanderers from Mexico, Cuba or the Bahamas. In fact, the state’s position has long been that flamingos are not native to Florida.
?
These findings could serve to help change flamingos classification by the state as natives – endangered ones at that – which would entitle them to special protections by the state.
Now, we finally have an answer! Zoo Miami’s Conservation and Research Team, Frank Ridgley and Steven Whitfield, teamed up with botanist Tony Pernas, Audubon Florida’s Pete Frezza and Jerry Lorenz, biologists Anne Mauro and Judd Patterson, to publish a study in the American Ornithological Society’s journal The Condor. Their findings confirm that flamingos are likely native to Florida, though with a very light footprint here. The details of the study were shared by the Miami Herald, New York Times, and more – ending an age old mystery surrounding these conspicuous birds. Dr. Frank Ridgley at Zoo Miami 6

Double the Stripes! Zoo Miami celebrated the births of not one, but two endangered Grevy’s zebras on Sunday, February 3, 2018! Both were born after a gestation period of about 13 months. The female foal, weighing in at 115 pounds, was born to a seven-year-old zebra that came in from Zoo New England. The male foal weighed in at 110 pounds to a six-year-old mother that came from the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska. Both babies share a father, an 18-year-old zebra that came from White Oak Conservation Center. The foals both received neonatal exams and were given private bonding time with their mother before being welcomed to their exhibit. They are the 21st and 22nd successful zebra births at Zoo Miami! 8

Cashew Béchamel Buckwheat Soba with Heirloom Tomatoes and Micro Spring Vegetables
Featured during this year’s Feast with the Beasts!
Ingredients: • 2 cups cashews, raw unsalted • 4-6 cups warm water • 1 cup onion, diced • 1 ½ cups vegetable stock • 2 cloves garlic, minced • Pinch of nutmeg • Pinch of white pepper • 2 tbsps. olive oil • 1 tsp sea salt • 1 cup Soba noodle, prepared as package instructs • ½ cup local heirloom tomatoes, halved • 1 package micro vegetables such as garlic, beets, radishes
Process: Step 1: Prepare the cashews by soaking them at least 4 hours in the warm water. Best if the cashews are soaked overnight. Step 2: In a hot sauté pan add 1 tbsp. olive oil, then the onion. Turn the temperature to medium low to be sure not to brown the onions. Once the onions are translucent, add the garlic, white pepper, nutmeg, sea salt and sauté a few more minutes. Step 3: Drain the cashews and discard the liquid. Add to a blender along with sautéed onions & garlic, and 1 cup of veg stock. Blend on high speed until smooth. For a thinner sauce, add the remaining vegetable stock in small portions until desired consistency has been achieved. Step 4: In a hot sauté pan add 1 tbsp. olive oil add the tomato halves to the pan and sauté until heated thoroughly but still maintaining their shape. Add the soba noodles to the pan and sauté until warm. Step 5: Add enough béchamel to coat the noodles, toss gently to combine, plate and serve. Remaining sauce can be stored in an air tight container for up to 4 days refrigerated.

Special Thank You to Mr. & Mrs. Ron Medford Ron Medford was a beloved volunteer at Zoo Miami for almost 19 years. He and his wife Kathy donated about 51,000 hours each of their time to the zoo before Ron passed away in August 2017. Kathy Medford has generously decided that any donations made in her late husband’s name should be received by the Zoo Miami Animal Hospital. Together, the Zoo’s volunteers recently collected $2,000 and presented the check on his behalf to the Animal Hospital. We are truly grateful for the Medford’s for their commitment and support of Zoo Miami throughout their lives. 17

Primate Stories with Patti Ragan
Clyde the chimpanzee lived in a cage in an Ohio garage for 45 years. Radcliffe spent a portion of his life in a small roadside attraction. Katie was kept as an indoor pet in a tiny cage in New Jersey. Patti Ragan found the Center for Great Apes in 1984 to be a sanctuary for chimpanzees and orangutans where “chimps can be chimps” and “orangutans can be orangutans.” The exotic pet trade in South Florida is a serious issue, particularly when people buy primates as the “pets” they are not meant to be. Hear the stories of these animals as Patti shares the dangers of the exotic pet trade and how we can make better choices to support primate conservation.
