LETTER FROM THE CEO Happy New Year Zoo Miami family! We are thrilled to be looking forward at the coming year with supporters and fans like you. We ended 2017 on such a high and positive note, dazzling families with a successful Zoo Lights in December and celebrating the hatching of an endangered false gavial. Throughout the year, we had fantastic turnouts for our camps and education programs, forging valuable connections between wildlife and our future generations. Each year, Zoo Miami Foundation strives to show consistent dedication to our mission and efforts of encouraging an appreciation for wildlife and supporting Zoo Miami. This is why we are so proud to be recognized and awarded the coveted 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest and most-utilized independent charity evaluator. This is our third consecutive year achieving this prestigious award, verifying that our organization exceeds industry standards, adheres to best practices in our sector and executes our mission with financial efficiency. This award is truly a testament to the dedication of our staff and supporters. With 2018 ahead of us, we will continue building on this dedication. We are happy to welcome some new faces to our Board of Directors, including Mary Barley and Christopher Walters, and new Advisory Council members Alan Atkinson, Anitere Flores, Tina Furniss-Roe, Pamela Garrison, Gerald Grant, Randal Groh, Jennifer Jones, Dennis Olle and Joe Wasilewski. The New Year is already kicking off to an exciting start. Love will be in the air this February with the return of Sex and the Animals with Ron Magill, and Romance in the Glades for a unique zoo date experience. Bald Eagles Bald eagle courtship involved a lot of showy acrobats in the air, but they truly strengthen their bond through nest building. The pair usually returns to the same nest year after year.

Swans
Gibbons
After completing their “courtship dance”, swans are typically bonded for life, and will stick together to raise clutch after clutch of baby swans. Their consistent pairing helps them learn from their successes and failures each time!
Gibbon “couples” like to spend time grooming each other and “hanging out” together in trees! Pairs are also known to “perform” morning musical duets to stake their claim on their territories together.

Endangered Crocodile Hatches
at Zoo Miami
A false gavial, a very unique type of crocodile from Indonesia and Malaysia, has hatched at Zoo Miami! After an incubation period of 89 days, the baby hatched on September 1st and was one of two hatchlings that emerged from a clutch of 25 eggs. While the second hatching did not survive, this successful hatching is the first of this species at the zoo in over 25 years. The baby crocodile was born to 45-year-old male “Lockjaw”, who is on a breeding loan and arrived at the zoo in 2000, and a 31-year-old female “Nessi”, who returned to the zoo in 2010 after being out on a breeding loan to another institution. Not very much is known about false gavials due to their low numbers (less than 2,500) in the wild. They are considered endangered, and threatened by habitat destruction, overfishing of food sources and to a limited extent, the skin trade. 9

Whole Grain High Carb Mushroom Taco
West Kendall Baptist Hospital’s Executive Chef Rod Knight
What you will need: • ½ cup cooked red quinoa • ½ cup cooked mixed grain blend • ½ cup quick pickled onions (see below) • Half of a small white onion diced • 1 avocado • 4 baby radishes sliced thinly • 2 cups mixed mushroom • 1 plantain sliced into 1 inch segments • 4 whole wheat low sodium tacos • 1 green onion thinly sliced for garnish • Cilantro (stems removed) • 4 table spoons Olive oil • ½ cup vinegar • Cumin • Red pepper flakes • Cracked black pepper

Process: Cook grains and quinoa according to package instructions. Cut the red onion in half and thinly slice. Place in a small bowl and set aside. Bring vinegar to boil in a small pan or microwave and pour onto the sliced onions. Let sit for at least 20 minutes. Using the back of a knife smash the plantains into thin disks. Head a medium-sized skillet. Once the pan is hot, apply pan release spray and place the smashed plantain into the pan. You should see the sugar in the plantain caramelize on one side, then flip and repeat. Once these are done, set them aside until assembly. Return the pan to the heat. Once the pan is hot, add a tablespoon of olive oil and the diced white onion. Sautee until caramelized, then add both the red quinoa and mixed grains. Season with cumin, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste. Set aside until assembly.

Custom Crate Created to Transport Sick or Injured Wild Panthers
Zoo Miami Foundation, Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and the Florida Panthers Foundation came together to present a new custom crate made to transport sick or injured wild panthers. The branded, manufactured lightweight crate was made to replace the FWC’s aging, heavy wooden crate.
This project was made possible by a $12,500 grant from the Florida Panthers Foundation’s Community Champions Program to Zoo Miami in March 2017. The grant also allowed at-risk youth students from the South Florida area to attend a customized field trip highlighting Florida panther ecology and Everglades restoration. 15
