LETTER FROM THE CEO Dear Friends, Happy New Year! We have officially made it through 2020, and it will certainly be one for the books. While some of our challenges from the past year may persist into the new one, we’ve learned valuable lessons that have made us more resilient. Here at Zoo Miami, education has always been one of the cornerstones of our mission and purpose, as it holds an immeasurable positive impact on the conservation of wildlife and betterment of our community. In the name of kicking off 2021 on a hopeful high note, we are absolutely thrilled to be opening the Conservation Action Center, presented by the Marc & Robin Osheroff Family! This new indoor interactive exhibit is filled with fun ways to play, engage, and learn more about the ways we are all connected to conservation. On January 16 & 17, we invite all of our friends and fans to come out to the opening to explore this new adventure at Zoo Miami.

Special thanks to Ana VeigaMilton and the Zoo Miami staff, for without these people, this publication would not be possible.
If there’s one thing we learned from 2020, it’s that whatever challenges we face, there is always a way to adapt and that through it all, we must find ways to strengthen our community connections. It is with this in mind that Zoo Miami’s adventures are more readily available to everyone through new digital experiences. Book a lesson for your kids’ group with our Virtual Zoo to You outreach programs, or purchase a personalized Virtual Greeting for someone special! Plus, thanks to our friends at T-Mobile, Zoocademy with Ron Magill has more incredible lessons to check out online, anytime. As we look to the year ahead, we are optimistic and excited for what’s to come. Of course, much of our confidence comes from knowing that no matter what, we have an incredible foundation of supporters in our community. On behalf of Zoo Miami and Zoo Miami Foundation, thank you for always being there to count on.
If you would like to support Zoo Miami’s mission, please give what you can.

THANK YOU! On November 19, 2020, our Zoo Miami fans and loyal supporters showed up in a big way to raise $70,184 in support of Zoo Miami Foundation on Give Miami Day! Despite this trying year, these funds will go a long way toward our mission of wildlife education and conservation.
New Year’s Resolution
Ideas 3
1 2 Get in shape
Get more sleep
Find a creative hobby
A classic New Year resolution, bringing more exercise and movement into your day can have tons of benefits and boost your confidence! Find a form of exercise that you enjoy to get in shape – like weight lifting, yoga, or running, sprinting, and charging like a rhino!
If you’re an always-on-to-go busy bee, maybe this is the year you prioritize getting more rest! Getting enough sleep helps to reduce stress and keep your mind and body healthy. Koalas can sleep for 18 – 22 hours a day to conserve their energy – so you could definitely fit 8 hours into your daily schedule.
You know that creative skill you’ve always wanted to sharpen or try for the first time? Make a plan to make it happen! Even some of our Zoo animals like Peggy the elephant make time to channel their inner Picasso!

Eat more greens
Visit the doctor more often
Become a morning person
Health starts from the inside, so make a commitment to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your diet this year! The Galapagos tortoise is a herbivore, and they eat a steady diet of grasses, fruit and veggies – making them total #healthgoals.
Visiting the dentist and doctor sometimes seems like an intimidating nuisance, but what’s more important than our health and wellness? Our animals take regular trips to the Animal Hospital for physicals, wellness checks and dental visits!
Have you ever wanted to be one of those up-and-at-em morning people? Channel your inner siamang! Here at Zoo Miami, our siamangs can be heard bright and early, performing their “morning calls” and vocalizations as part of their morning routine. Find a routine that helps you get energized and ready to start your day!

The Courtship Dance
In the wild, animals find a variety of ways to demonstrate their interest in potential mates. Mating rituals can seem beautiful, scary, or downright bizarre to us – but few are as mesmerizing as the dance of the argus pheasant! This stunning photo by Ron Magill captured a pheasant at Zoo Miami mid-dance and won a first place position in the 2020 National Wildlife Photo Contest! “Like a costumed contortionist, a male argus pheasant curls his ornate feathers into a cone, then peeks through the opening to impress a would-be mate. The elaborate courtship display of this Asian species is “quite rapid,” says Ron Magill, who caught the scene at Zoo Miami, which engages in global conservation. “The male runs around the female in circles, then stops right in front of her and snaps his wings into this painful-looking inverted position for a second or two to see if she’s paying attention.” How could anyone resist such an ardent gaze?” – National Wildlife Federation
See the dance in action with this video captured by Dolora Batchelor at Zoo Miami!

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS! These awesome Zoo volunteers have been with Zoo Miami for 40 years! Let’s hear more about what they love about volunteering.
“
Being in beautiful surroundings, sharing my passion for wildlife preservation, while interacting with visitors, volunteers, amazing animals, and the incredibly dedicated keepers and vets who care for them. All this makes volunteering at Zoo Miami a very rewarding experience.
Rosemarie Twinam
“
Favorite Animal: Elephants
Interacting with friends I have made over the years and those who visit the zoo. Being at Zoo Miami is a wonderful experience because it is zoogeographic, and visiting the different areas of the zoo takes me back to Africa, India, and Nepal.
Margo Williams
Favorite Animal: Cats always steal my heart. However, it’s hard to make a choice, I love them all!
“
What better way to spend one’s time than in a place of great beauty among earth’s beloved creatures and with colleagues of outstanding character and equal commitment to the betterment of the planet’s wildlife and environment? I will always be grateful for the life-changing good fortune I’ve been given to serve as a Zoo Miami volunteer.
“
Favorite Animals: Big cats, bears, elephant, tortoise, sloth---feathered, furry, large, small…cannot choose, I love them all!

More than 5 years in the making, Zoo Miami’s new Conservation Action Center has transformed what used to be Dr. Wilde’s World into an engaging interactive experience designed to connect guests to wildlife conservation efforts in a fun and inspiring way.
Combining hands-on games with impactful visuals, this new state-of-the-art exhibit will not only feature some of the many conservation efforts being done by Zoo Miami around the world, it will also show the visitor how they can make a positive difference in their own homes and backyards on a daily basis.
Crawl through a larger-thanlife Burmese python and learn how this and other invasive species labeled as, “Florida’s Most Wanted,” have negatively affected our environment and what you can do to help. 10
You’ll be introduced to some of our live native species in the “Meet Your Neighbors” area, where zookeepers will give regular interactive presentations. Keeper Corners throughout the exhibit feature revolving images of zoo staff working behind the scenes and in the field as well as some of the amazing animals that call Zoo Miami home. Explore “What it Takes to Save a Species” and sit in a golf cart to take a virtual behind-the-scenes tour of Zoo Miami’s Animal Hospital, Nutrition Center and Butterfly Research Lab. Plus, several interactive games have been designed to expose visitors to some of the interesting challenges faced by zoo staff such as “What’s the Poop at Zoo Miami” where you can compete to see who can scoop the most poop into a compost bin or be a game show host in “The Mating Game” and pair a gorilla with the best possible mate. See how high you can score in “Habitat Whack-A-Mole” while trying to eliminate environmental threats as quickly as possible. Finally, guests will be able to walk through a typical house and learn how they can best share their habitat in a way that supports wildlife and its conservation.
Conservation connects us all and the goal of the new Conservation Action Center is to show that to all who visit!
Special thank you to our incredible donors and sponsors for making this exhibit possible: The Marc & Robin Osheroff Family, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, Florida Power & Light Company and its charitable arm NextEra Energy Foundation, and the Romano Family Foundation.

DENTAL WEEK AT ZOO MIAMI Dental health is a key component of the Animal Health Department’s preventative medicine program at Zoo Miami. A variety of issues ranging from gum disease to broken teeth can lead to critical care issues that may result in serious infection and even death without treatment. Because animals generally do not complain about dental pain, dental disease is often referred to as “silent suffering” in the animal health field. By the time serious signs such as loss of appetite and weight are evident, the disease or infection process may be quite advanced and can be a debilitating and sometimes fatal issue in animals that do not receive the proper care. As part of the overall preventative medicine program at Zoo Miami, dental exams are routinely done on a variety of animals during regular general health exams. If and when issues are diagnosed, depending on the severity of the problem, Zoo Miami’s team of veterinarians will either perform the treatment themselves, or, when there are more complicated cases, enlist the assistance of a veterinary dental specialist. Back in October 2020, veterinary dentist, Dr. Jamie Berning, DVM, DAVDC, from Midwest Mobile Veterinary Dentistry, along with her veterinary technician, Jill A. Bates, RVT, traveled from their home in Columbus, Ohio to perform a series of procedures on a variety of animals including a lioness, gorilla, chimpanzee, tapir, aardvark and otters. The procedures were done over several days and ranged from general consults, cleanings and exams to extractions and root canals.
12
All of the patients have since been returned to their habitats, certainly much more comfortable following the extraordinary care they received during “Dental Week” at Zoo Miami.

Each year, as part of the mission of the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment, Ron Magill awards a $5,000 scholarship to a deserving high school senior or undergraduate university student who has demonstrated a passion for wildlife and a drive for protecting it in an exceptional way.
We’re celebrating the arrival of dinosaurs at Zoo Miami with limited-edition items for our Members! Stay tuned on how you can get your hands on these artifacts before they go extinct.
This year, two exceptionally outstanding candidates stood out so much so that he couldn’t award just one of them so they both received a $5,000 check! This year’s winners, Maria Clara Figueredo and Jose Bisbe-Ochoa are both FIU juniors who emigrated to the U.S. (Maria from Uruguay and Jose from Cuba) and overcame significant hurdles to work on conservation initiatives, especially in marine biology. They are true role models for everyone who cares about the environment and wants to make a difference.
We’d like to extend a huge congratulations to Maria and Jose, and thank them for their dedication and passion for saving wildlife! 16
