LETTER FROM THE CEO Dear Friends, It’s always incredible to witness how much can change in just a year. Around this time in 2020, we were celebrating Zoo Miami’s 40th anniversary with closed doors, still navigating the uncertainty and challenges of the pandemic. Now, a year later, our doors are open and our walkways are being explored every day by our wonderful visitors. In fact, we’ve even introduced a new way to enjoy Zoo Miami, through an Audio Safari tour that guests can enjoy for free! Summertime at Zoo Miami is truly special. With a sold out Summer Camp this year, our little explorers have taken over the zoo with eyes wide open, learning new things about animals, nature, and conservation that will inspire them for years to come. Kids and adults alike get to marvel at the early stages of life for our Spring babies, including our tiger cub, “Ndari,” an addax calf, three baby giraffes, three red river hogs, and more. And of course, every summer, we celebrate another year’s worth of adventure at Zoo Miami – this year, we turn 41! Just as in the world of nature, there is an ebb and flow to life. Sometimes there are challenges, but on the other side of that are triumphs and moments of pride. Thanks to our loyal and generous supporters, Members, visitors, and partners, we know that there are always bigger and better things on the horizon. Currently, Zoo Miami is looking forward to the opening of a new Sea Turtle Hospital that will help to care for and rehabilitate sick and injured sea turtles! This wouldn’t be possible without your support. As we are now halfway through this year, we look forward to what the rest of 2021 has in store for us, and we can’t wait to see where we are another year from now! As always, on behalf of Zoo Miami and Zoo Miami Foundation, thank you for your endless support. See you at the zoo.

Special thanks to Ana VeigaMilton and the Zoo Miami staff, for without these people, this publication would not be possible.

Zoo Miami Helps Discover New Spider Species!

Zoo Miami’s staff helped to discover a brand new species of large spider in the critically endangered pine rockland forest surrounding the zoo! The Pine Rockland Trapdoor Spider (Ummidiarichmond) was first found by a zookeeper who was checking reptile research traps all the way back in 2012. The keeper shared a photo of it with the Zoo Miami Conservation and Research Department for identification but it didn’t match any existing records for known spiders in the region!

More than two years later, another spider was found and sent out to experts for an evaluation. Eventually, it made its way to Dr. Rebecca Godwin of Piedmont College in Georgia who was in the process of looking at this group of spiders, which are related to tarantulas, and making detailed classifications and descriptions of the members of this Genus Ummidia found in North America. Dr. Godwin confirmed that it was a previously undescribed species. Considering only about 1.5% of the pine rocklands outside Everglades National Park are left in Miami-Dade County, it is likely that this endemic and elusive spider is already imperiled. Zoo Miami staff is grateful to Dr. Godwin for years of work in confirming the identification of this new species and are inspired that discoveries like this can still be made, even in the middle of a large developed region like the Greater Miami Area.

Baby Boom at Zoo Miami! Let’s meet some of the newest members of the Zoo Miami family!

ORINOCO CROCODILES

GIRAFFES

Just in time for Mother’s Day weekend, a set of critically endangered Orinoco crocodile eggs began hatching at Zoo Miami! 45 eggs were laid on February 5th and the first egg pipped on May 2nd, eventually fully emerging as other began following suit.

This past April, Zoo Miami welcomed three new baby giraffes! The first was born on April 2nd to 14-year-old mom, “Mia,” and made his exhibit debut just a few days later. Then, on April 5th, another calf was born to 6-year-old mom, “Zuri,” and a little over a week later, a male was born on April 15th to 10-year-old mom “Sabra.”

RED RIVER HOGS On May 17th, “three little pigs” were born to Zoo Miami’s 12-year-old red river hog, “Binti.” This experienced mom has successfully raised several litters before. This one was sired by 9-year-old dad, “Pua.”

ADDAX CALF In early June, a critically endangered addax calf was born at Zoo Miami, weighing in at just over 15 pounds. A neonatal exam confirmed the calf to be a healthy female! She is now doing very well and can be seen in her public habitat.

ZEBRA On June 22, an endangered Grevy’s zebra was born at the zoo. Zoo Miami staff has not yet been able to separate the baby from its mother to verify the sex of the foal, but it appears to be healthy and has been observed nursing frequently.

Ndari's MilEstonEs

Zoo Miami’s adorable Sumatran tiger cub is growing up fast and continues to make strides in her development and milestones! This critically endangered cub, born on January 5, 2021, has spents lots of time behind-the-scenes with her mom, “Leeloo,” but she is now exploring her habitat at the zoo daily.

a

Passed her swim test On April 8, this brave tiger took a big step (and splash) by passing her first swim test! As the tiger exhibit is surrounded by a moat of water, she was gently dropped in to test her instincts – which quickly kicked in as she paddled her way to the ledge of the pool. She even took it upon herself to leap back in for another swim!

a

Got a new name During the spring, we called on our Zoo Miami community to help us name our cub by voting online and on May 3, we announced the winning name: “Ndari” which is an Indonesian name that means “full moon.” This naming campaign raised $2,000, and all contributions were dedicated to tiger conservation.

a

Exploring her new habitat Now, Ndari and Leeloo are incrementally building up their time spent in their public habitat. They are given access and the ability to go back into their dens as they wish. This slow process is important to ensure their comfort and confidence. Hopefully, you’ll get to see them during your next zoo visit!

14

15

Otter Pups Debut On April 28, 2021, our new North American river otter pups made their public debut! These babies were born on February 5 and in the months following, they stayed with their mother in a den behind the scenes, where they were slowly introduced to a shallow pool to develop their swimming skills. Now, after some encouragement from their mom to explore their habitat in the Florida: Mission Everglades exhibit, they are using those swimming skills to visit with zoo guests!

Joe Did you know that observers from all over the world tune in to the live Meerkat Cam (affectionately known as the “Meerkam”) at Zoo Miami? People from New Jersey and Canada to Germany and Australia write and call to tell us they love them, ask questions, or alert us to when there is a pesky spider web blocking their view. “It is really heartwarming for us to get the personalized messages about how our meerkats are loved from all over the world and it’s nice to know that other people love them as much as we do!” says Animal Care Coordinator Kristen Kendrick. Our family of five meerkats consists of the 10-year-old mom, “Yam Yam”, the seven-year-old boys, “Joe”, “Diego”, and “Gizmo”, and our youngest little boy “Yuca,” who is one-and-a-half years old. You may see all five or as few as one or two at a time occasionally, as we regularly give them access to their back areas during the day so they can choose where to hang out or nap. One of Kristen’s favorite things to do is rearrange the logs that are in

their space to give them new places to explore, dig under, and stand on. We typically feed our meerkats three times daily; twice as part of training sessions and once from small bowls that look like rocks. The bowl feedings provide them with their carnivore chow as well as some chopped produce like carrots. During the training sessions, we give them meat and bugs (their favorites!) and ask them to do many different behaviors such as line up together, separate, target, and even allow us to touch and hold them for small periods of time (which is very helpful for monitoring their health). These meerkat training sessions occur usually between 9AM and 10AM and between 12PM and 1PM, though we like to keep the meerkats guessing too by switching it up!
