Two-toed sloths are not currently endangered, however, much of their habitat is being lost to deforestation and urban encroachment. Marge, Montey and baby are on exhibit at the Zoo, while fellow two-toed sloths, Penelope and Chelsea, live behind the scenes at the Zoo’s Critter Connection and serve as ambassadors for their species.

President & CEO Message Dear Friends of Zoo Miami, For over 60 years, Zoo Miami Foundation (ZMF) has made incredible strides in supporting Zoo Miami’s mission to conserve wildlife and encourage an appreciation for it within our communities. Each year, as we surpass our own success and create new milestones, we continue to clear a path forward, and our sense of purpose grows stronger. We began fiscal year 2019 with a new mission statement. “Zoo Miami Foundation fosters community pride and involvement with Zoo Miami and secures financial support for the Zoo.” This solidified our commitment to building new, prosperous partnerships within our community that would push our efforts even further, both locally and around the world. ZMF partnered with the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment to fund scholarships for students who are the future of conservation, and global field projects that offer real-world solutions to wildlife issues and threats. We also collaborated with Reclaimed Earth, Inc., to bring Wildlife Guardian gift boxes to children in South Africa, using our plush animals to build connections and awareness of their native animals. Through sponsorships including Carnival Foundation, Mercedes Benz, The José Milton Foundation, The Kirk Foundation and many more, we are able to forge stronger connections with our local community through engaging education programs. We have also been fortunate to have top-notch doctors and veterinarians from around the country provide our animals with world-class health care, and even the historic birth of our baby rhino. And of course – our ongoing partnership with Zoo Miami’s fans and supporters. In the wild, we have what you may call a symbiotic relationship. We are proud to bring valuable, educational and fun experiences to our guests. In turn, our supporters make us stronger – this year, helping us raise a record-breaking $66,840 on Give Miami Day, consistently selling out our education programs, and even helping us name our baby hippo, Aubergine. I extend the deepest gratitude to our organization’s backbone: board volunteers, Zoo members, teen and adult volunteers, and our dedicated staff. Each relationship makes us that much stronger, and it is because of all of you that we can leave a lasting impact on our community, the animals we protect, and the environment we share. Thank you for your pride. Thank you for your involvement.

Connect. Care. Conserve. Through the leadership of the Zoo Miami Foundation Board of Directors, we are launching a capital campaign to establish a Conservation Action Center, build a new animal hospital, and renovate the tiger exhibit to include a nose-to-nose feature. CONSERVATION ACTION CENTER Longtime Board Director, Marc Osheroff, kicked things off in a major way with a $500,000 gift toward the Conservation Action Center. Marc first joined the Zoo Miami Foundation family to help rebuild the zoo post-Hurricane Andrew, and he and his wife, Robin, have been staunch contributors ever since. Thank you, Marc and Robin, for your leadership and unwavering support. Slated to open in 2020, the Conservation Action Center, a $1.2M project, is an immersive, interactive exhibit that introduces guests to conservation stories from around the world, and here in our backyard at Zoo Miami. The State of Florida granted Zoo Miami Foundation $412,000 toward the Conservation Action Center. ANIMAL HOSPITAL To build awareness for the growing needs of the animal hospital, Dental Leaders: K. Randall Groh, DDS, Richard R. Souviron, DDS, and Adrian J. Correa, DDS, hosted a cocktail event last spring at Riviera Country Club.

A group of 50 attendees listened in to Ron Magill and chief veterinarian, Gwen Myers, DVM talk about animal care and the importance of building a new hospital. Since the opening of Zoo Miami in 1981, the number of animals under our care has more than tripled, and the zoo now serves, as needed, as a triage point for injured native animals, thanks to collaborative partnerships with local, state, and government wildlife agencies. Though we have a remarkable veterinary team and external specialists that graciously offer their skills and time pro-bono, we have reached a threshold where our animal health facilities and equipment are inadequate to meet the demand placed upon them. We are building a $12M new animal hospital, but only with community support, and that began with a $100,000 grant from the State of Florida. TIGER NOSE-TO-NOSE VIEWING The tiger temple was a showstopper when Zoo Miami opened on July 4, 1980, and has been a fan-favorite ever since. So, it is no surprise that it is time to give this landmark exhibit enhanced features that will give visitors an up-close and personal experience to view the tigers ‘nose-to-nose’ through a glass viewing wall. The ZMF Board of Directors approved raising $1M toward this immersive project that is in the early planning stage as architects work to imagine how to bring these renovations to life. Stay tuned for more exciting campaign updates.

ZOO TO YOU

CARNIVAL KIDS PROGRAM

Zoo to You makes science come alive in classrooms through educational animal presentations and project-based learning activities.

For over 23 years, Carnival Foundation has supported Zoo Miami’s Learning Experiences program through Carnival Kids, a unique standards-based interactive program designed to challenge fourth and fifth grade students to become the next generation of environmental stewards.

Collaboratively funded by: Carnival Foundation, The Miami Foundation, Whole Foods Marketplace, Dunspaugh Dalton Foundation, Shepard Broad Foundation, Inc., Coral Gables Community Foundation, and Peacock Foundation, Inc.

This program promotes wildlife conservation and is specifically designed to provide opportunities to local, underserved students. To date, the program has impacted 11,500 children. “The Carnival Kids program is an exemplary program for our community,” said Bill Moore, ZMF President and CEO. “Together with Carnival Foundation we hope to continue inspiring the love of science for another 20 years and beyond. Thank you for your unwavering leadership and investment in our children’s future.”

Outward Bound: Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay and Coral Gables granted ZMF $30,000 for the lease of an educational outreach Metris van! This custom-wrapped van delivers “Zoo to You” outreach in the community.

COMMUNITY In July 2018, Zoo Miami Foundation and Zoo Miami became a Certified Autism Center through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Educational Standards. As part of this certification, staff completed a training and review process with the goal to better serve individuals with autism and other sensory needs. This initiative has increased impact within the special needs community, especially through our education programs funded by the Do Unto Others Trust and The Miami Foundation. #ZooMiami

Ron Magill Conservation Endowment Fund Ron Magill has worked with the Pan-American Conservation Association for over 10 years. The Pan-American Conservation Association is a wildlife conservation non-profit that rescues and rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned animals, providing long-term care for those that need it. Through educational programs, they promote environmental awareness and community involvement in protecting wildlife. Their main goal is to rescue and release wild animals to their natural environment to help protect the biodiversity of the environment. They are considered the number one rescue and rehabilitation organization in Panama and are especially well known for their ability to rescue and rehabilitate sloths. Zoo Miami is home to two of the sloths saved by this organization and presented to the zoo as ambassadors for their species in grateful appreciation for the support given by the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment. During Ron’s work with this organization helping to rescue a variety of wildlife, he couldn’t help but notice that the dedicated individuals within the organization were using their personal vehicles to rescue these animals throughout the region. He decided that they needed a proper vehicle specifically designated to do this so it was with great pleasure that the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment provided the funding to purchase a brand-new van. That van now travels throughout Panama in an endless effort to save some of Panama’s most precious wildlife. In addition to the work with the Pan-American Conservation Association, the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment provides annual funding to the following conservation partners:

10

AUDUBON FLORIDA:

EARLHAM COLLEGE:

Funding supports scientific research and monitoring in the Southern Everglades and Florida Bay, most notably to track and better understand the roseate spoonbill.

Funding supports The Jim Fowler Wildlife Conservation Fund that provides financial assistance for Earlham-led conservation research.

FLORIDA ASSOC. OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS (FAZA): Funding matches FAZA travel dollars to assist AZA-accredited staff to participate in efforts to benefit wild plants and animals in Tropical America and the Caribbean.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA: Funding supports The Ron Magill Conservation Scholarship that is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Wildlife, Ecology and Conservation pursuing studying species in Tropical America and the Caribbean.

ZOO CONSERVATION OUTREACH GROUP (ZCOG): Funding supports The Ron Magill Conservation Heroes Award that recognizes outstanding contributions to in-situ wildlife conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin.

Sea Turtle Project Thanks to $200,000 support from the Zoo Miami Foundation, Zoo Miami will soon be building a facility to aid in the rescue and recovery of sick and injured sea turtles. Currently, sea turtles found in need of medical attention in the Miami-Dade area need to be transported to facilities in Boca Raton or Marathon, which can delay medical care. The goal of creating a facility at Zoo Miami will be to support efforts to rehabilitate and release all patients by providing world class veterinary care. The center will have five large saltwater enclosures, which will be able to house up to 16 turtles depending on the size and species of patients. The center will be located at Zoo Miami behind the scenes, directly across from the animal hospital. Anticipated debut is late 2020.

ECO-CELL RECYCLE Eco-Cell hosted a nationwide campaign to inspire recycling of ‘electronic waste’ and Zoo Miami Foundation answered the call! In our community, a total of 977 cell phones were collected, 271 by Westminster Christian School, and $1,500 was raised to support Gorillas on the Line, a conservation initiative to support gorilla conservation.

BELLA GETS A NEW DENTAL MACHINE When our six-year-old orangutan Bella needed help, our community stepped up! A few years back in her previous home, Bella got stuck between the bars of her enclosure and suffered a compound jaw fracture. Since then, she’s needed nine dental procedures and has been trained for voluntary dental x-rays. Through donations from our generous community of supporters, we purchased a much-needed dental x-ray machine we can use to monitor Bella and her beloved Zoo animal friends for years to come.

A SPECIAL KIWI A kiwi was hatched last spring at Zoo Miami, from a fertilized egg received from the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. The kiwi name, Paora, is named in honor of a New Zealand leader who dedicated himself to wildlife conservation. Every kiwi that is found outside of the country remains the property of New Zealand and of the indigenous Maori people. Kiwis are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

AUSTRALIA OPEN Through the Gail S. Posner Trust and Sanford J. Schlesinger, Trustee, renovations and expansion are complete and the Posner Australia Center is now open. Zoo Miami is now home to a breeding pair of koalas, breeding pair of Matchie’s Tree Kangaroos with joey, a new wallaby and our wonderful new wombat.

GOPHER TORTOISE RELOCATION The Zoo Conservation & Research team led the effort to relocate gopher tortoises at Nixon Smiley Pinelands Preserve just north of Zoo Miami. Gopher tortoises are a threatened species in Florida, but they are often displaced by people and cannot be returned to their homes. The relocation site, where only a few tortoises still survive, serve as a new home for displaced tortoises and will help restore the population there. Last fall, Drs. Whitfield and Ridgley hosted a gopher tortoise research skills training for gopher tortoise biologists from Florida Atlantic University and the Broward Co. Parks Dept. at the relocation site.

Conservation Teen Scientist Volunteers The Conservation Teen Scientist (CTS) program is an opportunity for 9th - 12th graders to join the Zoo Miami team to develop practical life skills like public speaking and team building while increasing their knowledge in environmental sciences. 104 Students this year got to network with experts in the field, go on field trips, receive community service hours, educate and assist guests at the zoo and more! After one year of participation, CTS students may even receive animal handling training to work with our ambassador animals.

“

The CTS program provides high school students a unique opportunity to expand their education and careers that otherwise not be possible if not for the efforts of Zoo Miami and the Zoo Miami Foundation. - Norma J. Abraham
