Rangi Ruru is an independent day and boarding school for girls in Years 7 to 13 in Christchurch, New Zealand, with a school roll around 700. Here, each student is supported in an environment which knows and cares about them so they can thrive in a complex, modern world.
School life is underpinned by a set of values (Respect, Aroha, eNthusiasm and eNdeavour, Generosity of spirit and Integrity) and our four key pillars (Be You, Belong, Be Your Best, Be the Change) which are all encompassed in our aspirational Rangi Graduate Profile.
Ākonga are supported to strive for and live these values, and our pillars summarise the key ways students are empowered by all that Rangi Ruru offers. The Rangi Graduate profile is a research-based framework detailing the essential attributes we believe will enable our rangatahi to live fulfilling lives— whatever the future may hold for them.
While we never know exactly what challenges and triumphs lie ahead, research shows there are certain skills and behaviours today’s students can learn and practise that will help them thrive.
These skills and dispositions are highlighted in the Rangi Graduate Profile. The profile outlines the skills and dispositions which help us develop these core strengths across all aspects of hauora, social, pastoral, academic, spiritual, emotional and co-curricular aspects of learning and development.
This profile helps provide a framework for all our students to become people who know themselves and their place in the world.

RANGI RURU IS A PLACE WHERE EVERY STUDENT IS KNOWN. WE ENCOURAGE RANGATAHI TO EMBRACE THEIR UNIQUE INTERESTS AND PASSIONS, AND SUPPORT THEM TO BUILD THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACROSS ALL ASPECTS OF THEIR LIVES. A TRULY PERSONALISED APPROACH TO EDUCATION MEANS EACH STUDENT’S NEEDS AND REQUIREMENTS ARE RECOGNISED, AND LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT ARE TAILORED TO THE INDIVIDUAL.
BE YOU.
YOU.
PERSONALISED EDUCATION TE MĀTAURANGA AROWHĀITI
Rangi Ruru is a place where every student is known and feels supported to be their true self. As a school this means recognising and embracing each student’s needs and requirements through a truly personalised learning experience in small classes, with opportunities and flexibility for each individual to explore their passions and interests.
At Rangi Ruru we deliver education differently. We believe every student learns and develops in their own way, often at their own pace and with their own unique goals. Being a small school with small classes means we can get to know each student not only by their name and interests—but by how they learn.
Learning is complex, but we know ākonga do better if they love what they do, and a personalised approach means we can design learning opportunities to support individual passions and strengths. Knowing each student enables us to support their learning and provides our students the best opportunity to succeed, whatever success looks like for them as an individual.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS
Rangatahi are active participants in their learning. This starts with Personal Development Plans (PDPs) created in partnership with kaiako (teachers), and often parents, at the beginning of each school year to set out goals, identify strengths and areas for development across all aspects of academic, wellbeing and co-curricular.
THE LEARNING CENTRE
The Learning Centre offers a range of services to ensure that ākonga have an opportunity to reach their true potential. Specialist teachers, teacher aides and outside agencies work closely with individual students one on one, as small groups or offer in-class support to improve learning opportunities.
The centre is designed to support any student who requires assistance with their studies or to access the curriculum fully. Specialist support is identified with whānau consultation and can range from supporting rangatahi with learning differences and organising peer tutoring to offering study tips and exam techniques.
HIGH-PERFORMANCE LEARNING
We provide additional learning opportunities, challenges, mentoring and support for students who have the potential for exceptional levels of performance. These services are provided across the school through relevant teaching and learning strategies in the classroom and with dedicated support from the High-Performance Learning (HPL) Coordinator.
Opportunities include: Mentoring and support; enrichment opportunities like workshops, lectures, special events and field trips and year level acceleration or multi-levelling. Opportunities include the Model UN, Actura/NASA events and attending the New York Academy of Sciences.
THE WAY GIRLS LEARN
TE TIKANGA AKO
O
NGĀ KŌTIRO
Extensive research shows girls in singlesex education outperform girls in co-ed environments on nearly all academic, social and emotional outcomes. Delivering our education and co-curricular programmes specifically for the way girls learn means our students not only achieve to a higher level but they feel more comfortable in doing so.

SMALL CLASS SIZES
NGĀ KARAIHE MATAWHĀITI
As the smallest independent Years 7 to 13 girls’ school in the South Island, Rangi Ruru students are known and cared for by our staff. Strong kaiako-student relationships are integral to productive learning and our small classes enable meaningful connections to be developed and nurtured.
Subject classes are limited to 25 students (22 in Years 7 and 8) with most classes in the senior school between 16 and 20 students. In this close-knit environment teachers provide regular and targeted feedback to mentor and enable each student’s learning.
Tutor groups—focused on students’ care and development and general wellbeing—are also small. Tutors connect with each student during Whānau Time at the start of each day, oversee Personal Development Plans (PDPs) and know how their students are progressing in all aspects of their learning and extracurricular activities.
YEARS 7 AND 8
Joining Rangi Ruru in Year 7, your daughter will receive a leading education within a broader secondary school community. Ākonga benefit from specialist teachers from Year 7 and have access to many of the same programmes, resources, and co-curricular activities, typically accessible only at secondary school.
A focus on literacy and numeracy underpins all aspects of the curriculum. Mathematics classes are grouped by ability and students study three languages over two years. In Year 8, they participate in the William Pike Challenge Award, which fosters resilience and adventure and reflects our values of aroha and endeavour. Our personalised approach in Years 7 and 8 ensures students are well-prepared for Year 9 and beyond.
CO-CURRICULAR
Rangi Ruru has very high participation rates in cocurricular activities across music, sporting, performing arts, service and sustainability.
As well as a mix of social and competitive music, sporting, dance and drama groups, there are over 30 different clubs to join including debating, speech and drama, environment, art, innovation and entrepreneurship, enterprise and robotics.
Rangatahi are strongly encouraged through their goal setting and PDPs to explore their passions and interests by joining these different groups, which also include leadership roles and responsibilities and provide depth for scholarship and tertiary pathways.

CARE & WELLBEING TE ĀTAWHAI ME TE HAUORA
An important marker of success at Rangi Ruru is the culture of the school and how students feel when they come here each day.
Our unique Care and Development Network provides pastoral support for each student with their Form Tutor, kaiako and year level Dean as well as peer mentors, coaches, two school psychologists, boarding staff, nurses, chaplain, Wellbeing and Digital Engagement Coordinator, Health Coordinator and a dedicated Careers and Pathways Strategist from international university admissions consultancy Crimson Education.
Students learn about themselves and the wider community and world through the Te Ara programme which weaves together strands of citizenship, careers and pathways, hauora (holistic health) and Te Ao Maori.
SISTERHOOD
& CLANS
Rangi Ruru’s tradition of sisterhood dates back to the eight Gibson sisters who founded the school in 1889 as a place for students to feel comfortable, connected and accepted for who they are. Now, the school whānau is larger and more diverse than our founders could have ever imagined.
Clans are an integral part of belonging at the school; celebrating both achievement and participation and encouraging students to think creatively, act with compassion and develop confidence. Each student joins one of six spirited Clans—named after Scottish castles—to participate in sporting, cultural and service events alongside ākonga from all year groups. Collective points are tallied each year for the hotly contested Clan Cup.
VALUES & FAITH
NGĀ UARA ME TE WHAKAPONO
We are guided and motivated by our school values of respect, aroha, enthusiasm and endeavour, generosity of spirit and integrity, and strive to embody our four key pillars—Be You, Belong, Be Your Best, Be the Change—in all that we do.
Rangi Ruru was founded on Christian traditions and our motto “Whāia tō te Rangi – Seek the Heavenly Things” reflects our commitment to nurturing a spiritual dimension through services in the on-site chapel, St Andrew's at Rangi Ruru. Students of all faiths and religious backgrounds are warmly welcome and invited to enrol at Rangi Ruru, including those of no faith, and our Te Ara classes celebrate our society’s diverse religious and cultural makeup.
We have weekly full school chapel services led by Rev Phyll Harris, moderator of the Alpine Presbytery who is also available for pastoral support to rangatahi and their whānau.

BOARDING
TE NOHO Ā-KURA
Boarding at Rangi Ruru provides your daughters a safe, secure and caring environment in which they can feel happy and supported in all that they do. Our environment will help them focus on learning, discovering and exploring new opportunities and to have fun while doing it! Our boarders come from many different areas of New Zealand and the world, yet they all find a home in our boarding house.
At the heart of our boarding philosophy is valuing that each student is unique and supporting them to bring their own special character to our community. We encourage rangatahi to rise to our high standards of behaviour which reflect responsibility, and care for oneself, others and the environment.
Boarders live in our modern, 130-bed on-site boarding house with shared common rooms and access to the kura library, gymnasium, fitness centre, swimming pool and other facilities. All meals and snacks are provided in our dining room. We have 24/7 staff, tech-free time, special activities, social events and a formal buddy system.
In Years 9 to 10, ākonga share room of four, moving to two person rooms in Years 11 and 12 and to flats of six individual bedrooms in Year 13.
IN 2022, OUR DIRECTOR OF BOARDING, KYLEIGH LYTH, WAS AWARDED THE TOP BOARDING AWARD IN NEW ZEALAND, THE NEW ZEALAND BOARDING SCHOOL ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN 21ST CENTURY NEW ZEALAND BOARDING.
HĪTORI
RME TE KĀWANATANGA
angi Ruru was founded in 1889 by Helen Gibson as a place to educate and empower girls. For the next 60 years the school would be administered by Helen and her sisters Mary, Beatrice, Alice, Lucy, Ethel, Ruth and Winifred.
Originally housed in a large home built by the Gibson sisters’ father, the school relocated to its present site in 1923 when it was gifted the name Rangi Ruru (meaning wide sky shelter, a place for generosity and hospitality) by Ngāi Tahu leader and former warrior, Pāora Taki from Rāpaki. Te Koraha, the original school building at the Rhodes Street site, remains at the heart of today’s campus.
In 1946, the school was purchased by the Christchurch Presbytery, taking it from a private endeavour run by a family in the Anglican tradition, to a Presbyterian school registered with the education department and controlled by a Board of Governors.
Rangi Ruru is now an independent charitable entity administered by its Board of Governors, each member recruited to represent a cross-section of business acumen and competencies. The Rangi Ruru Foundation manages the school’s assets to ensure long-term sustainability.
Over many years the kura has grown its roll and evolved its curriculum and campus, notably with the commitment to a long-term redevelopment following the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. This redevelopment masterplan, named Project Blue Sky, has so far seen the construction of new state-of-the-art library, science, performing arts, humanities and sport and multi-purpose buildings.
HISTORY AND GOVERNANCE ALUMNAE
TE KĀHUI RAUKURA
Every student who attends Rangi Ruru remains part of our whānau for life through the Rangi Ruru Old Girls’ Association. School leavers are welcomed to RROGA at the Leavers’ Ball, a highlight of the social calendar held at the end of each school year for departing Year 13 students and their families.
RROGA keeps its members connected with news and happenings from the global alumnae community and hosts social events and reunions each year. Its committee members work alongside school management, staff and the Parent Teacher Association to keep these connections strong, and many alumnae return to the school as parents, grandparents and volunteers.
CULTURAL NARRATIVE NGĀ KŌRERO AHUREA
Rangi Ruru is committed to honouring and celebrating our story. Accepting that we have plenty of room to grow is essential. In 2022, after consultation with our wider community, a new Whānau Komiti was established to help Rangi Ruru explore its cultural narrative.
The Whānau Komiti provides time and space for ākonga to reflect upon who they are, the connections they forge and the difference they make, and wish to make, within the school. As the Komiti has grown, so has its mana and influence within our community, and we are excited by the opportunity to support all learners to belong and to understand our unique cultural narrative.
Rangi Ruru engaged Boffa Miskell to conduct a formal report into our bi-cultural history, heritage and values, developed in conjunction with kaiako, ākonga and their whānau. From this, our Rangi Ruru cultural narrative has been developed.
Rangi Ruru enjoys a relationship with Ngai Tahu hapū, Ngāi Tūāhuriri from Tuahiwi, where Pāora Taki—who gifted the school its name in 1923—is buried and who still hold his manuscripts and traditions within the community.
Te Ao Māori is a key part of our Te Ara programme, and our school kapa haka group is a popular co-curricular activity for students with performances at school events, as well as leading mihi whakatau for visitors.

THE SCHOOL’S MOTTO WAS CHOSEN IN 1953 AS AN ADAPTATION OF COLOSSIANS 3:1 WHICH WAS QUOTED ON MISS HELEN GIBSON’S MEMORIAL WINDOW AT ST MARY’S CHURCH. “SEEK THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE ABOVE” WAS TRANSLATED TO WHĀIA TŌ TE RANGI BY REV JG LAUGHTON, THE SUPERINTENDENT OF PRESBYTERIAN MĀORI MISSION WORK AT THE TIME.

LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT
ĀTAHITANGA & WHAKAWHANAKETANGA
Leadership and development opportunities begin as soon as students enter the school. Not only do rangatahi take an active role in their learning with their PDPs, but goal setting and reviewing is scheduled into Whānau Time and Hui Time. Careers and pathways planning begins in junior years through Te Ara, and there are opportunities for students access both extension and extra support.
Leadership opportunities also begin in the junior years, progressing to roles with more responsibility as ākonga enter their senior years. From classroom roles to those impacting the wider school and community, students can explore involvement with facets of school life which interest them, and causes they care about.

Scholarships were offered by all eight New Zealand universities, as well as overseas universities including California State University, Wagner College, and University of Hawai'i at Mānoa.
NCEA & RESULTS
NCEA ME NGĀ PUTANGA
We are committed to preparing our rangatahi for the internationally recognised National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) at all three levels.
We value NCEA for its flexibility as a standardsbased qualification that combines both internal and external assessments. This approach allows ākonga to develop essential competencies, including analytical and critical thinking, communication, collaborative participation, and self-management.
At Rangi Ruru, students have the opportunity of studying for NCEA and University Entrance, as well as entering Scholarship Examinations.
NCEA is typically undertaken by students in Years 11, 12 and 13, though flexibility at Rangi Ruru allows for multi-levelling.
Rangi Ruru students consistently achieve within the top 3 percent of NCEA results nationally.

"WE HAVE A STRONG TRADITION OF SPORTING EXCELLENCE, HOWEVER WITH PARTICIPATION RATES CONSISTENTLY ABOVE 85 PERCENT, WE ALSO HAVE A TRADITION OF INVOLVEMENT AT ALL LEVELS."
SPORT
HĀKINAKINA
Sport at Rangi Ruru is as much about participation and fun as it is about competition, challenge and success at the top level. The essence of sport at our kura is found in the opportunities provided for students to find the activity or sport which inspires them.
We have a strong tradition of sporting
excellence and currently hold several regional and national sporting titles across a variety of codes with close to 15 students representing New Zealand on the international stage in 2024.
However, with participation rates that consistently sit about 86 percent, we also have a tradition of involvement at all levels.
We invest in quality coaches, managers and convenors to support our rangatahi to flourish, and offer extra support like strength and conditioning, mental skills coaching and wellness monitoring. We are also the only school in the South Island with a dedicated equestrian programme, and students can bring their horses to school for stabling and grazing nearby.
S.O.A.R
Supporting Outstanding Athletes at Rangi Ruru (S.O.A.R) is built on the premise that better humans make better athletes, and caters to high-achieving athletes who meet eligibility criteria. S.O.A.R provides training and nutrition advice, access to impressive guest speakers and AlthleteDISC profiling.

Our expert staff offer support and guidance for those at any stage of their theatre arts journey—whether they are looking for a bit more social confidence or aiming to complete Scholarship assessments in Year 13.
Theatre Arts focuses on building students’ knowledge and practical skills, as well as developing understanding of the historical context of style and form. We work alongside ākonga as the leaders of their own learning to build confidence and guide their progress.

TE KAWEA ŌU
BE THE CHANGE.
RANGI RURU WAS FOUNDED TO CHANGE GIRLS’ LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION. TODAY, WE EQUIP ĀKONGA WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND MINDSETS TO TAKE ACTION ON THE CAUSES IMPORTANT TO THEMSELVES AND SOCIETY.
THE CHANGE.
We believe a sustainable school is a great place to learn, where ākonga develop a social conscience and are educated on the principles of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and are empowered to live out their values by taking action for the environment.
With an on-site Eco-Action nursery, Rangi Ruru ākongahave helped cultivate tens of thousands of native seedlings which are used to regenerate the earthquake-affected Christchurch Red Zone. The school vegetable garden grows vegetables for local women and children in need, and clothes, shoes, toiletries, toys and books are collected for donation at our Reuse Depot.
Rangi Ruru is proud to be an Enviroschool, a Fairtrade School, a KNZB Sustainable Schools Award finalist, and a finalist in the New Zealand Sustainable Business Network Awards. We audit, and are committed to reducing, our carbon footprint and use compostable and fair trade products where available.
Sustainability learnings are embedded not only into the operational running of the school, but through Te Ara classes and co-curricular offerings.
SUSTAINABILITY SERVICE WHAKAUKA
MAHI AROHA
Community service is an integral part of our co-curricular offering, with ākonga connecting to and seeking out opportunities to contribute to local, national and global community groups, events and charities.
Rangatahi work towards the nationally recognised Student Volunteer Army (SVA) Service Awards, with more than 10,000 hours of community service typically recorded by Rangi Ruru students each year. A student-led Service Council works with our Head of Service and Community to organise events such as Harvest Festival, 40-hour Famine, Daffodil Day, supporting the Years 7 and 8 William Pike Challenge, promoting the SVA awards to all year levels, and running ad-hoc fundraisers and events when need arises.
In 2023 our on-site nursery grew...
18,000+ an abundance of fruit and vegetables for wāhine and tamariki in need
TE ARA
THE PATHWAY
Te Ara is designed to enable students to participate fully in their life at Rangi Ruru and the world beyond by focussing on the four strands of Hauora, Citizenship, Te Ao Māori and Careers and Pathways.
Te Ara aims to help students develop the Rangi Graduate Profile skills and dispositions across a vast range of subjects including religions and beliefs, health, life skills, Te Ao and Te Reo Māori, wellbeing, psychology, sustainability, philosophy and careers and pathways.
These classes form part of students’ weekly timetables and develop with students as they progress from Years 7 to 13. Through Te Ara, we aspire to empower ākonga to be people who know themselves and their place in the world, locally, nationally and globally.
RANGIX
RangiX is learning at the intersection of innovation, technology and entrepreneurship to develop graduates equipped with future-focussed skill sets, tool sets and mindsets to thrive in a diverse and dynamic world.

RangiX is our commitment to providing opportunities for ākonga to develop knowledge, skills and experience through initiatives that not only build digital capabilities but allow students to grow as innovative and entrepreneurial humans with the capacity to sense, seize and transform opportunities.
Students access RangiX learning through pre-existing classroom subjects, as well as standalone classes as part of the Te Ara curriculum, co-curricular options and online learning modules.
ENROLMENTS
WHAKAURU
Enrolling at Rangi Ruru is the start of an exciting journey, and our dedicated Enrolments Team are here to assist you and your daughter every step of the way.
Enquiries for enrolment are welcome for all year levels, however, Years 7 and 9 are our two main intake levels.
For all day and boarding enrolments, applications can be submitted any time from birth, and once received, your daughter will be added to the enrolment waitlist. Please note an application does not guarantee placement in the school.
The formal enrolment process begins approximately one year prior to your daughter’s anticipated start date, where we work through the enrolment waitlist and invite ākonga to interview with the principal. These interviews are prioritised for siblings of current or past ākonga, daughters and granddaughters of alumnae, then by the date an application was received.
If an offer of a place is made following the interview, payment of the confirmation fee will confirm your daughter’s place at Rangi Ruru.
