PURPOSEFUL FORM. PLINTH’S ARE KNOW TO SUPPORT SOMETHING ABOVE ITSELF. THIS SYSTEM OF ORGANIZING THE UNITS, ACTS AS THE SAME. WITH EACH UNIT TAKING UP A VARIETY OF PATTERNS TO OFFER MULTIPLE VIEWINGS FROM WEST SUNSET TO ALSO SEE THE RISING SUN. THESE INTERLOCKING UNITS ALLOW FOR MORE OF AN INTERESTING SPACIAL CONDITION, FROM WITHIN THE UNIT ITSELF. THE FORM DEPICTS AN IDEA ABOUT KEEPING THE STREET EDGE FLAT AND BOLD. THE SITE RUNS PARALLEL TO A FAIRLY BUSY ROADWAY BUT ALSO FACES THE BAY AT WHICH THE SUN SETS. A BOLD LINE OR RECTANGLE OF UNITS ONLY ALL W THOSE FEW THE PRIVILEGE TO SEE THE SUN SET FROM WITHIN THEIR UNIT. WITH CUTTING WEDGES OUT OF A RECTANGLE, YOU INCREASE THE VIEWING OPPORTUNITIES BY THREE TIMES. THE AGGRESSIVE ANGLES ALSO WORK FOR THE EAST SIDE OF THE BUILDING SUPPORTING A PARK. THE TOWER POINTS ACT AS ANCHORS AND BE COME PART OF THE VERTICAL CIRCULATION. PARKING AND OTHER FEATURES ARE SUPPORTED UNDERNEATH THE PLINTH.

PROJECT INTRODUCTION:
OF MANY MAJOR CITIES LOCATED OFF A RIVER THAT LEADS INTO A BAY, TAMPA IS FINALLY MAKING ITS WAY TO DEVELOPING ITS WATERS EDGE TO THE PUBLIC. THE ADDITION OF BUILDINGS THAT REACH OUT TO THE SKY, BUT TO ALSO BE MINDFUL OF THE FLORIDA LANDSCAPE IT TRIES TO DISRUPT. TAMPA URBAN ALLOWS FOR A COMMON GOODS STORE TO TAKE THE WATERS EDGE WHILE ALSO PROVIDING HOUSING AND KEEPING THE NATIVE TREES AND LANDSCAPE MOSTLY UNTOUCHED.

ALL UNITS OPERATE OFF OF A HIGH-LINE CONNECTING THE ENTRANCE OF THE TOWERS TOGETHER. THE UNITS THEMSELVES SUPPORT THE ROLE OF A DONUT, IN WHICH THE CENTER IS UNUSABLE BUT NECESSARY AND THEN YOU HAVE 360 DEGREES OF DOUGH. THE HIGH-LINE CENTERS ON THE COMMON GOODS STORE AND BRINGS YOU DOWN TOWARDS THE WATERS CLEARING WHERE KAYAK/ BOAT DOCKS SUPPORT ACCESS BY WATER.

AXIS QUITO: A COMMUNITY IN NEED
ADVANCE DESIGN C: J. WAMPLER ‘15 CHRIS REYNOLDS JENNA SHAWVER ZORTH PILONIETA
Our master plan builds on the idea of community; to explain further, the new plan for Itchimbia develops a network of communities along a main path which ultimately acts as an axis. The axis not only connects the internal, smaller communities together, but also connects on a larger scale by bridging out and creating a physical connection to the history city. The connection is brought to fruition by our ‘People Movers’ which act as a main means of transportation in and out of our project. Ultimately, Axis Quito is a place that will thrive and become a partnership to the historic city of Quito.

The location of our site, on the mountainside of Itchimbia, has a unique history. A development of the hilltop caused the relocation of the inhabitants to seek better housing. The government supplied the housing, but left many details out. The intent of our project was to design with the mindset of creating a better life for the residents while simultaneously introducing a new style of living that relates to the historic times in Ecuador. We are proposing a master plan that not only highlights but enhances the cultural quintessence of Quito.

AXIS QUITO The site and its context has been the most influential aspect to the design of Axis Quito. The potential relationship between the historic downtown of Quito and Itchimbia is what is to be realized by the design of this project.

The junk model provides a means of exploration without preconceived limit and functioned as a tool to determine the necessities for a successful community. The model is a representation of the design concept for Axis Quito and highlights the three main nodes of the design; the nodes from bottom to top are as follows: agricultural center, place of worship/ library, and educational center. The dark grey material represents the pathways; the pathways are vital to the success of the nodes for they not only link the nodes to each other but link to the secondary plazas in the community, represented in orange. The success of the junk model was discovered when the design became just as important as the integration with the natural The massing model clearly defines the main pathway, the backbone, to Axis Quito. The three main nodes, denoted in orange, are linked by the path as well as view corridors. The residential buildings branch directly from the main path and main, densely public plaza to create secondary, more private plazas for more residential use. The linear growth of buildings allows for focus to be on the community as a whole; consequently, the linear growth enables housing to flourish for it permits all residents to be within close proximity, and thus, to be connected to all of the three nodes. Ultimately, the linear growth makes possible for a connection, an axis, to be made back to the his-

The People Mover is designed to not only transport people throughout Axis Quito but to also link the community to the historic city of Quito. The transportation system is designed to easily maneuver the steep climb in Itchimbia. The People Mover is also powered by solar panels and contributes to the sustainability of Axis Quito; the People Mover hub/ charging station is located at the top of the mountain in Parque Itchimbia. The station overlooks both the historic city and Axis Quito, and therefore, creates a visual reference. This transportation system will provide a key economic driver for Quito by offering a link to tourism, jobs, real estate development, etc. All in all, the People Mover provides not only transportation and adds to the culture of Quito, but can set an example for sustainability in Ecuador. The map to the right is a suggestion as to the path of travel for the People Mover. ADVPortfolio.indd 80

The buildings were designed to best suit the climate and culture of Quito. Space is captured and filtered by different means that are specific to each building and its use. The image above shows a public building used for office space while also concurrently hosting a means for vertical circulation to the public parks above.
The elevation study models explored the ideas of Axis Quito in a larger scale. Through a series of photographs of architecture in Quito, the interventions were used to distinguish how the successful architecture was used to capture, create, and differentiate spaces.

A place for worship in Hispanic cities becomes the center for community amongst its people. Similar to older cities, our center builds off this notion. The building opens up to the main plaza where areas for dancing and special events like “movies on the wall, happen. The use of the building becomes mainly public with the exception of the weather tower. The room for worship is located above the space for the Library.
The education center is found north from our main plaza and is the most elevated amongst the other nodes. Its location, safe from all forms of traffic, provides views out while also opening out to the fields where recreational sports can occur. This center has the capacity to bring children from neighboring villages in to learn. The students as they walk up the path towards the school, become part of the city’s daily rituals adding another source of life.
With the use of stepped agricultural fields, the town is able to produce some of its own food and also create a marketplace for its crops. This center prepares the produce for sale and for travel. It is also a place to learn how to cultivate crops and understand some of the sustainable features offered. The marketplace is where food (locally grown and imported) and other goods may be found. Restaurants also benefit from having a local source for produce, not only for freshness, but a sense of pride. ADVPortfolio.indd 84

The path is lined by commercial, residential, hotel, and public gathering functions. The path inclines slowly increases up the side of the mountain to allow for an enjoyable walking experience. Branching from the path, are gathering spaces that are shaded naturally with ficus trees or by man-made canopies that double as solar energy gatherers. ADVPortfolio.indd 89
