DIA DE LOS MUERTOS MUSEUM A SMALL MUSEUM IN DOWNTOWN TUCSON WITH SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR THE ANNUAL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS/ ALL SOULS PROCESSION EVENT IN TUCSON. THE MUSEUM IS SITUATED ALONG THE PROCESSION ROUTE, A PLACE FOR VIEWING AND EVENT RECEPTION SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM.

THE DESIGN WAS FOCUSED ON CREATING A UNIQUE SPATIAL QUALITY USING A SERIES OF PRECAST CONCRETE 'BANDS'; THE BANDS SYMBOLIZE THE EARTH/SKY, LIFE/DEATH CYCLES PROMINENT IN DIA DE LOS MUERTOS WITH THEIR CONTINUALITY. VARYING THE SIZES AND THE SHAPES OF THE BANDS CREATES A MULTITUDE OF LIGHTING CONDITIONS OVER THE COURSE OF A SINGLE DAY

 

ALL SOULS PROCESSION

ALL SOULS PROCESSION/DIA DE LOS MUERTOS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST NONCOMMERICAL PARADES IN THE U.S, ATTRACTING OVER 150,000 PARTICIPANTS IN A SINGLE NIGHT. THE PARADE IS INSPIRED FROM THE MEXICAN HOLIDAY OF THE SAME NAME, STRESSING THE DIVERSE LAYERS OF THE CITY. IT IS A REFLECTION OF LIFE AND DEATH, STRESSING THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE RATHER THAN THE PAIN OF DEATH.

ADAPTIVE REUSE: SITE PLANNING + PROPOSAL A NEW SECTOR OF ARCHITECTURAL EXPANSION IS ADAPTIVE REUSE / URBAN RENEWAL. NOT ONLY IS THERE A STYLISTIC SHIFT IN THE ARCHITECTURE TOWARDS THE BARE BONES, OLD WAREHOUSE AESTHETIC, THESE OLD LOTS IN OLD DECREPIT NEIGHBORHOODS ARE BECOMINNG THE HANGOUTS OF THE YOUNG PROFESSIONAL CROWD. THIS IS A PROPOSAL TO RENOVATE A LONG UNUSED MECHANIC'S SHOP INTO A RESTAURANT THAT WILL BE ALONG UNIVERSITY AVE. AND FOURTH AVE., TWO MAJOR AXIS' OF NIGHTLIFE AND FOOD IN TUCSON. THE RESTAURANT WILL SERVE TWO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS, AS A MIDDLE END RESTAURANT DURING NORMAL LUNCH AND DINNER SERVICE HOURS AND AS A DRIVE THRU OPEN TIL LATE INTO THE NIGHT TO SERVE THE BAR CROWD.

INTENT THE LOT WAS DIVIDED ALONG A TWENTY FOOT GRID INTO NINE EQUAL SECTIONS. EACH SECTION WOULD BE PORTIONED OFF INTO EITHER OUTDOOR SPACE, OPEN LIVING SPACE, OR PRIVATE SPACE. THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING WAS INTENTIONALLY LEFT EXPOSED AS A TRIBUTE TO THE ORIGINAL CHARACTER OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD; THE MAIN STRUCTURE, A SERIES OF LARGE STEEL COLUMNS WOULD 'ANCHOR THE LIVING SECTIONS ONE ABOVE ANOTHER.

URBAN EDUCATION CENTER THE PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN DOWNTOWN TUCSON IN AN OLDER DISTRICT THAT HAS BEEN HOME TO A LOT OF NEW DEVELOPMENT. THIS SCHOOL ITSELF IS A WALDORF SCHOOL, A TYPE OF 'ALTERNATE' LEARNING SYSTEM. THE DESIGN IS TO REFLECT THIS EDUCATIONAL METHODOLOGY AND IS TO RESPOND TO THE SITE AND NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY AS WELL. IN ORDER TO GREATER ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY, THE SCHOOL WILL HOST A BI-ANNUAL FARMERS MARKET USING CROPS GROWN WITHIN THE SCHOOL.

DENVER, COLORADO IS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING CITIES IN THE AMERICAN WEST. ONE OF THE CITIES BIGGEST CHARMS IS ITS ECCENTRIC AND LAYERED URBAN CHARACTER. IN ORDER TO DESIGN FOR A CITY, ONE MUST GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CITY. CAPITOL HILL IS THE OLDEST NEIGHBORHOOD IN DENVER AND IS KNOWN AS A MAINLY RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD. FROM THE TECTONICS ANALYSIS AND THE PHOTOS ABOVE, IT GIVES A SENSE OF THE LAYERS OF HISTORY AND CHARACTER OF THE CITY OF DENVER AS A WHOLE.
