Cabinet condemns excessive use of force Sanctions ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin Srinagar, June 19: The State Cabinet which met here under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today condemned the excessive use of force in Gool area of District Ramban and extended condolences to the bereaved families and sympathies with those injured in the firing incident. Cabinet also extended extra ordinary ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the firing incident. It further ordered that government job will be provided to a family member of those killed in the incident.

Policeman dies in ‘accidental’ fire Handwara, July 19: A police follower lost his life when his service riffle went off ‘accidently’ during the wee hours on Friday in North Kashmir’s Handwara Town. Superintendent of Police Handwara Chodhri Mohammad Aslam told CNS that police is investigating the matter whether the said police follower committed suicide or died due to accidental fire. Police sources said that Abdul Majeed Khan resident of Hafrad Vilgam died due to bullet injuries under his chin at the Handwara camp of special operation group. Khan, who was working as a follower in the police, sustained the injuries in “accidental” firing, the sources said. It was not immediately clear whether Khan was killed due to mis-firing from his own weapon or from the weapons of any of his colleagues.Police has started an inquiry into the incident.

Agriculture Minister meets Governor SRINAGAR, JULY 19 - Ghulam Hassan Mir, Minister for Agriculture, called on N. N. Vohra, Governor, at Raj Bhavan here this evening. The Governor and Mir discussed the longer term adverse consequences of climate change on the agricultural and horticultural productivity of the State and the measures which must be implemented in the short and medium term. They also discussed issues arising from the growing shortages of water faced in several areas and the need for urgent steps being taken by farmers and growers to optimize available moisture resources. The Governor and the Minister also discussed issues relating to delays in democratic decentralization.

Rs15000 fine imposed under FS & S Act UDHAMPUR, JULY 19:- Additional Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Surat Singh, who is also the Adjudicating officer under Food Safety & Standard Act, Friday imposed a fine of Rs. 15000/- on three defaulters namely Shakti Kumar of Basantgarh, Vishaw Kishore S/O Isher Dass and Rakesh Gupta S/O Ramesh Kumar of Udhampur under the Act. All the defaulters were found selling miss-branded food items on prosecution being launched by Food Safety Officer, Udhampur, Zulafkar Ali and Food Safety Officer Block Ramnagar, Sanjeev Kumar. All the three offenders confessed the offence and were warned to desist from carrying out such anti-people activities in future. The Adjudicating Officer asked the Food Safety Officer and the designated officer under the Act to launch public awareness programmes by organizing camps at various locations across the district.

Amid curfew, restrictions, 2 injured in clashes Situation remained by and large peaceful in Kashmir: IGP Srinagar, July 19 At least two persons were injured in clashes that erupted at various places across the valley on Friday against the killing of four civilians in Gool area of Ramban yesterday in BSF firing. Authorities clamped curfew in most parts of Kashmir and several areas of Jammu to thwart separatists protest calls against the killings. Sources told KNS that at least two persons were injured in police action at Kurhama near Ganderbal. They said police used force to quell the protesters who were demonstrating against the civilian killings by BSF at Gool. Reports said protests also rocked several areas of Jammu division against the killings in Ramban where curfew remained in force. ‘Centre to fund for modern drug testing lab Srinagar’ Srinagar, July 19 The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry would provide funds to the State government for establishment of modern Drug Testing Laboratory of International standard at Srinagar and asked the State government to identify alternate land for the purpose to create necessary infrastructure well in time. This was apprised by Union Joint Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Dr. A.K.Ponda to the Minister of State for Health, during his meeting with him held at Civil Secretariat last evening. The meeting was also attended by Drug Controller General, India, Dr. G. N. Singh, besides other Senior Officers of Union Health Ministry and State Health Department. During the meeting several issues related to strengthen of Drug and Food Testing Laboratories besides ensuring supply of quality drugs in the State were discussed and decisions were taken for im-

FSL submits its report regarding Civil Secretariat blaze Srinagar, July 19 The Forensic Laboratory (FSL) authorities have submitted its report regarding the recent fire incident in the Civil Secretariat campus to the government on Friday. Sources told KNS that the FSL report indicates that the fire was caused due to kerosene oil and has rejected the initial claims of the authorities that it occurred due to the short circuit. “Immediately after the fire incident the FSL experts had collected eight samples from the spot. However, they collected four more samples on the instructions of Secretary General Administration Department (GAD) Sheikh Mushtaq Aha-
