HC orders new merit list for J&K migrants Mumbai, July 23: More than 400 Jammu and Kashmir migrant students, after securing admission to engineering colleges in Maharashtra under the J&K migrant quota, will have to pull out after the Bombay high court asked the directorate of technical education (DTE) to draw up a fresh merit list for students. The last-minute change was announced a week after the entrance exams, leaving students -- who had not appeared for the examination -- without an option of doing so.
The high court has now asked DTE to put on hold the admission given to around 400 students under the quota and draw up a new merit list on the basis of the students' Class 12 scores. With August 10 as the deadline for completing the admission process, the court has directed the DTE to come up with list before the stipulated date. Senior Akali Dal leader from Punjab Simranjit Singh Mann Tuesday said that without the intervention of any third country, Kashmir issue could not be resolved. “Indo-Pak dialogue on Kashmir issue has proved always futile and in future too it would be a futile exercise. Pakistan has no objection over the intervention of third party but it is India which is reluctant as India has occupied Kashmir forcibly,” Mann told reporters during a press
conference in Srinagar on Tuesday. He said India is acting like an Ostrich, closing its eyes and is not ready to accept reality. “It is a harsh reality that Kashmiri people want freedom from India and India is ruling over this piece of land by military might,” he said adding that India has let loose a reign of terror in Kashmir and it is following the policies which it had followed in Punjab. Coming down heavily on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for failing on every front, Mann said

roof of the house. The height of tyranny is that even after pushing him down, said police officer continuously beat him till blood started oozing out from his mouth and ears,” they said. The family members alleged that the said officer along with SHO, Safakadal visited SKIMS in plain clothes and enquired about the condition of Jan Mohammad from doctors. “When I told the Chowki Officer, why he beat Jan Mohammad, he said you can’t fight with central Government. I was aghast to listen
his reply that Kashmiri people can do nothing before the might of Central Government,” one of the family members said adding that the said officer even said they visited hospital to see whether we could file a case against CRPF or not. “It is absolutely wrong to blame CRPF. Islam does not teach what happened in Budgam
Have mainstream and separatist leaders gone underground? Shahana Srinagar, July 23: The eruption of group clashes in some areas of Budgam district have raised many questions about our social and religious bonds which have off late suffered because of the winds of intolerance and impatience. Islam is a religion known for its human values, co-existence, tolerance, brotherhood, amity, communal harmony and for recognition and respect of other fellow beings besides deliverance of jus-
tice, on the basis of equality before the divine law. This religion became popular within a short span of time, as it treated and provided equal opportunities to at par with monarchs; it delivered the justice without discrimination, it gave equal rights to all human beings based on justice and equality, it brought revolutionary changes in socio-religious and economic fields in the world and it never recognized sects and beliefs though it recognized and respected right to expression.
Despite its clear decrees, the Muslims in the whole of the world are in disarray because of their own faults of not following and adhering to the teachings of Quran and Prophet, who are Sunnies and who are Shias? Both followers of Islam, believing on the basic tenants of this religion as also the Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him), the last of the Prophets. If they follow the same religion with minor differences here and there, why should they become murderers, assassins and
killers of each other? Why should they damage the property of each other in a brutal and wild manner which the Islam never approves of? The happenings in Budgam in a society like ours is shameful and both the communities particularly the religious heads should introspect and take remedial measure so that such happenings never recur making us to bow our heads in shame. The valley was just recouping and recovering See Budgam on Pg. 11

When contacted Superintendent of Police City North, Tahir Saleem told CNS that the day stone pelting started in the area, police soon lodged an FIR in this regard. “He might have slipped himself and police is not responsible for this act. unacceptable and intolerable. Perhaps both communities have forgotten that one of the dictates amongst hundreds issued before every Gazwa (religious war) was that women, children, old people, crops and green trees should not be damaged but in Budgam reportedly, all these things were violated and that too when it was not a Holy war against the enemies but an ugly turn of events between two sects of same religion and on a very minor issue. How can we claim to be followers of Islam and Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) who was a symbol of tolerance and who was the victim of oppression and frequent attacks by his non-followers. Have Muslims of Budgam and the valley forgotten the behavior of “Hinda” and the treatment she got in return from Prophet (Peace be upon him). The whole world remembers it and will remember it till the dooms day. We have also forgotten whatever the misbehavior and intolerable actions we indulged in Budgam have been done in the month of holy Ramadan, the month of Prayers, the month of introspection and the month of seeking mercy of Almighty for our sins. Strange is the behavior of religious heads of both the sects that they never issued a strong statement condemning these heinous acts of violence and vandalism and never bothered to visit the affected areas for pacifying the people so that incident would not have taken so serious turn. It is unfortunate that this all happened in the land of the saint of saints Alamdar-e-Kashmir, Sheikh Noorud Din Noorani who was a symbol of tolerance and non-violence. There is no doubt that there has always been some tension between Sunnis and Shias during the Muhharam Processions but this kind of tension never took the ugliest turn like that of Budgam where even kitchen garden, paddy field and live stocks were not spared. It is time for repentance; it is time for exercising restraint and patience, it is time for introspection and it is time to forget everything that happened in the past. Let us come forward to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and communal amity, as expected of a good human being.

Victim of obscenity
I
n yet another shocking incident in the rape capital, an unidentified man walks into a school in Delhi, accosts a Class 2 student, takes her to a classroom and rapes her. How could an unidentified man enter a school in the first place? Where were the school's security guards? Or were there none because government schools only cater to poor students? Recently, India witnessed several nervewrenching incidents of rape, out of which the most recent were of two minor girls, 9 and 5 years respectively, from Bhopal and New Delhi. Both were gang rape cases committed with a friend as accomplice, while the latter was a result of drinking and watching a porn video on the cell phone. The Asian Centre for Human Rights reported that child rape cases jumped from 2,113 in 2001 to 7,112 in 2011 in India. Even the latest data of the Union Home Ministry suggests that only the United States and South Africa are ahead of India in rape cases. These figures have raised concerns throughout the nation, where people took off to streets, holding signs and chanting angry slogans of “enough is enough” against the government and the police, both of which have failed miserably in curbing the crime, and one after the other, horrifying rape cases have been reported upfront. The inhumane gang rape on 16th December, of a 23 year old student, in a bus, was difficult enough for the people to forget; and the two recent cases have outraged the masses that are criticizing the measures taken by the police as inefficient and insignificant. As a fall out of these heinous crimes some families restrict women and girls’ mobility because of the risks. The mere thought of keeping them safe is what’s leading many families to keep their young girls home, instead of sending them out for school. Is this the solution? This brings us to the real question! How can one curb and control the heinous crime of rape? What penalty and punishment should the rapist bear? How can one feel safe if he is back in streets after serving some time in prison? Or, as a matter of fact, not caught or persecuted in the first place? What should be done? Enforce stringent laws, efficient police force or ban pornography; as the Home Ministry is in the process to decide. Even though publishing or distributing it, in print or on the Web, is illegal under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act of 2000, pornography is spreading rapidly in India due to rapid internet penetration and the spread of smart phones. What about one of the biggest revenue generating sectors of India, the Film Industry? There was a time when portrayal of sex, nudity, social unrest and violence was kept out of movie halls under India’s strict laws. But today, the industry demands a more open-minded approach. Does liberalism mean promoting nudity? If the demand is to allow sexually suggestive material, implicit nude scenes and scantily-clad ladies, then hell with this liberalism. The sexual scenes and the obscene hoardings of films around the nation is doing great harm in exciting men, who may or may not have any other outlets for their excitement. These images are vulgar, obscene and should be banned in public. But in contrast, the industry seeks more freedom to promote vulgarity and provocative scenes that could prove detrimental to the sentiments of different religious sects and minorities. With such demands from the film sector and artists, who knows where the Bollywood industry is heading? But one thing is for sure, that India is becoming a victim of obscenity!

Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH) Scheme to Reduce Vulnerability
A
dolescence is a decisive age for girls around the world. What transpires during a girl’s teenage years shapes the direction of her life and that of her family. For many girls in developing countries, the mere onset of puberty that occurs during adolescence marks a time of heightened vulnerability: leaving school, child marriage, early pregnancy etc. Adolescent girls are less likely than older women to access sexual and reproductive health care, including modern contraception and skilled assistance during pregnancy and childbirth. Many are poor, have little control over household income, have limited knowledge about sexual and reproductive health issues, and lack the ability to make independent decisions about their health. Adolescent pregnancy brings detrimental social and economic consequences for a girl, her family, her community and her nation. Many girls who become pregnant drop out of school, drastically limiting their future opportunities. A woman’s education is strongly correlated to her earning potential, her health and the health of her children. Thus, adolescent pregnancy fuels the intergenerational cycle of poverty and poor health. The younger a girl is when she becomes pregnant, whether she is married or not, the greater the risk to her health. Married adolescents may feel social pressure to bear a child and thus not seek family planning services. Unmarried adolescent girls face a different type of social pressure of fearing judgment or dealing with a socially-unacceptable pregnancy. About 16 million girls under age 18 give birth each year. Another 3.2 million undergo unsafe abortions. Almost 90 per cent of the pregnant adolescents in the developing world are married. But for many of these girls, pregnancy has little to do with informed choice and is often a consequence of discrimination, rights violations (including child marriage) or inadequate education. Adolescent pregnancy is an important health issue with the youngest mothers facing higher risk of maternal complications, death and disability along with their children. It is also an issue of human rights with the adolescent pregnancy often resulting in an abrupt end of childhood, a curtailed education and lost opportunities. So, we must provide all adolescents with age-appropriate, comprehensive education
on sexuality. This is especially important to empowering young women to decide when and if they wish to become mothers. In addition, we must provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services that cover family planning and the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Maternal health services that women need must be guaranteed. Adolescent pregnancies put newborns at risk. The risk of death during the first month of life is fifty percent higher among babies born to adolescent mothers. The younger the mother is the higher risk for the baby. Fifteen per cent of all unsafe abortions in low- and middle-income countries are among adolescent girls aged 15-19 years. In 2008, there were an estimated 3.2 million unsafe abortions in developing countries among girls aged 1519 and adolescents are more seriously affected by complications than are older women. Unsafe abortion is responsible for about 13 per cent of all maternal deaths, with adolescents disproportionately affected. Young people aged 15 to 24 accounts for 41 per cent of new HIV infections worldwide. Adolescent girls are at far greater risk of contracting HIV than adolescent boys. Young women make up 64 per cent of all new infections among young people worldwide. According to 2001 census data, there are 225 million adolescents, which comprise nearly one-fifth (22%) of India’s total population. Of the total adolescent population, 12% belong to the 10-14 years age group and nearly 10% are in the 15-19 years age group. This age group comprises of individuals in a transient phase of life requiring nutrition, education, counseling and guidance to ensure their development into healthy adults. Following data on adolescents from various national surveys call for focused attention with respect to health for this age group; · More than half of the girls in the 15-19 age group are anaemic - 56% (NFHS-3) · Over half (58%) of Indian women are married before they attain 18 years of age (NFHS-3) · 16% of girls aged 15-19 have already begun child bearing and 12% have had a live birth · Only 14% of women in the 15-19 age group have received complete ANC · 62% of currently married adolescents have had complications during pregnancy 52% of women in the 15-19 age group have
delivered at home · 8.3% of all pregnancies in this age group result in spontaneous abortions · 45% of all maternal deaths take place among the15-24 age group and Neo-natal Mortality Rate(NMR) is as high as 54/1000 among those in the age group of 15-19 years. · Neo-natal Mortality Rate among rural adolescents is as high as 60/1000. · 50% higher risk of infant deaths among mothers aged below 20 years (NFHS-3) · Only 66.2% of pregnant girls below 20 years of age have been given or purchased iron and folate tablets as part of antenatal care (NFHS -3) · 6000 adolescent mothers die every year due to anemia (NFHS -3) · 47 per cent girls in this age group are underweight (NFHS -3) Accordingly Government of India has accorded priority to Adolescent Health in the RCH-II programme. The Programme Implementation Plan (PIP) of Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH) focuses on reorganizing the existing public health system in order to the service needs of adolescents. Steps are being taken to ensure improved service delivery for adolescents during routine sub-centre clinics and ensure service availability on fixed days and timings at the PHC and CHC levels. Outreach activities in tune with this have also been initiated in some states. A core package of services includes preventive, promotive, curative and counselling services. Adolescent-friendly services are to be made available for all adolescents – married and unmarried, girls and boys – during the clinic sessions, but not denied services routine hours. All States have incorporated this into their State PIPs. There are close to 3000 adolescent friendly health clinics across District Hospitals, CHCs and PHCs. Efforts are underway to ensure availability of trained staff at these clinics as well as in routine OPDs. Medical Officers and ANM/ LHV/ Counsellors have been trained on offering adolescent friendly health services across the country. This network needs to be expanded and strengthened to increase access to quality services for adolescents. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has also rolled out a new scheme for the Promotion of Menstrual Hygiene among Adolescent Girls in the age group of 10-19 years in Rural areas. This programme is aimed at ensuring that adolescent girls (1019 years) in rural areas have adequate
knowledge and information about hygiene and the use of sanitary napkins. This scheme has been launched in 25% of Districts in the country i.e. 152 districts across 20 States in the first phase. Further, the School Health Programme has been launched to address the health needs of school going children and adolescents in the 6-18 year age groups in the government and aided schools. This is the only public sector programme specifically focused on school age children. Its main focus is to address the health needs of children, both physical and mental, and in addition, it provides for nutrition interventions, promotes physical activities and counseling. This preventative and curative service provisions have long fetched dividend in the future MCH and RCH profile. Components of School Health Programme include screening and early management of disease, disability an d common deficiency, supplementation, health education and health promoting schools. Health service provision through screening, health care and referral specifically for general health, assessment and follow up of Anaemia /Nutritional status, visual acuity, dental check up, common skin conditions, heart defects, physical disabilities, learning disorders, behavior problems. Basic medicines are being made available for common ailments prevalent among this age bracket. Biannually supervised schedule for deworming, as per national guidelines is being followed. Fixed day immunisation coupled with education about the issue, as per national schedule has been included in the package of service. Referral service connectivity from primary, till super specialist health facilities has been initiated. To conclude, the actions to meet adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health needs would protect their rights and help prevent girls from having too many children too early in life, which threatens the health of mothers and children and strains young families’ limited resources. Preventing unintended adolescent pregnancies and investing in girls’ educatio n, health and rights have powerful ripple effects in other areas of their lives. Educated young women offer a powerful boost to their families’ wellbeing, contributing to increased household income and savings, better family health and improved opportunities for future generations.
Competition Commission of India - 4 Years of Enforcement of Competition Law
F
ree and fair competition is one of the pillars of an efficient market economy. Competition has become a driving force in the global economy. May 19, 2009 changed the paradigm of doing business in India. That is the day the enforcement of the Competition Act was started by the Competition Commission of India. During its brief existence of about 4 years, CCI has come a long way. Though relatively short in terms of life span, the Competition Law is hugely significant as a building block for economic development and rising levels of economic welfare. Evolution of Competition Law in India India was among the first developing countries to have a competition law in the form of the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices (MRTP) Act, 1969. The MRTP Act was designed to check concentration of economic power, prohibit restrictive or unfair trade practices and control of monopolies. Then came 1991, which has proved to be a watershed in the history of India’s economic development. The new India required new rules. Hence, the need for a new competition law. Accordingly, the Competition Act was passed in 2002 and amended in 2007. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) was established on March 1, 2009 as an autonomous body comprising of a Chairperson and six members. An appellate body Competition Appellate Tribunal was also set up in May 2009 with final appeal lying to the Supreme Court of India. Subsequently, the MRTP Act was repealed, MRTP Commission established under that act was abolished and its
pending cases were transferred to the CCI. Sections 5 & 6 relating to Merger & Acquisition were notified in June, 2011. Developments Over the Past 4 Years Since the notification of provisions of sections 3 and 4 relating to anticompetitive agreements and abuse of dominance in May 2009, CCI has received more than 350 matters and passed final orders in more than 260 cases. The forms of enforcement include a wide range of anticompetitive issues like cartels, bid rigging, abuse of dominance, after markets etc. Under Sections 5 & 6 of the Competition Act, more than 120 notices have been received and disposal rate has been more than 95%. All the notices were cleared within the self-imposed limit of 30 days wherein the Law allows a period of upto 210 days for clearing the notices. Major Sectors Covered under Various Orders of CCI The sectors that have been covered are as diverse as infrastructure, finance, entertainment, IT, telecom, civil aviation, energy, insurance, travel, automobile manufacturing, real estate and pharmaceuticals etc. Cement is a crucial input in construction industry vital for economic development of the country. CCI imposed a penalty of approx. Rs.6700 crore on eleven cement manufacturers and their trade association for behaving like a cartel. The cement manufacturers and their trade association have subsequently preferred an appeal before the COMPAT. Even while the hearing continues in the case, COMPAT has directed the cement companies to deposit 10% of the penalty
imposed by CCI. This is a significant development in the process of enforcement of Competition law in the country. Earlier, in another case with major ramifications for consumers, the Commission had imposed a penalty of approx. Rs. 630 crore on DLF, a major real estate player. It was found that it had abused its dominant position by imposing arbitrary and unreasonable conditions on the apartment owners. Subsequently, CCI issued an order modifying the terms and conditions of the agreement signed by the companies with its investors to ensure that the terms and conditions between the buyer and seller were fair and transparent. This order may well become the harbinger of change in the real estate sector for the benefit of consumers. Suo Moto Actions The CCI not only hears and investigates cases based on the information received by it, but it also takes suo moto action wherever it finds that a prima facie violation of Competition Act has been committed. In 2011, the Commission had taken suo-moto cognizance of the reported manipulation of the bids by manufacturers of LPG cylinders for supplying cylinders to the Indian Oil Corporation. A penalty of more than Rs.187 crore was imposed on parties to the bid rigging. Many more such notices have been sent by CCI in the Petroleum sector, Agricuture sector etc. taking cognisance suo-moto. Public Procurement and Competition Law Another issue which has been of paramount concern to CCI has been the dimension of public procurement. Public
procurement is a contentious issue vis-àvis application of competition law due to a number of factors. Competition Act does not make a distinction between a public and private enterprise. As such, public enterprises, which are generally the big procurers, are subject to competition assessment. In recent months, the Commission has decided a number of matters, including cartelization in government contracts. Penalties have been imposed on firms to discourage the anti-competitive practices and abuse of dominance. Wherever, after inquiry, it has been found that competition could be enhanced if certain policies of government were modified, the Commission has suggested changes in such policies. Orders have been passed in more than 21 cases wherein SOEs and Government Departments were a party. Some of these include Oil Companies, Railways etc. CCI has been taking up the issue with the public procurement agencies and has had number of interactions with the nodal officers of more than 50 Ministries/ Departments to ensure that the practices followed in the public procurement are in compliance with the letter and spirit of the Competition Act. Four years is a very small period to judge the effectiveness of a new legislation. However, as the developments of the past four years suggest, Competition Commission of India is set to change the rules of the game and play the role of a watchdog to check anti-competitive practices in the market. The Competition Act and the culture of competition are slowly but definitely finding their feet in India.

Have a salmon fish dinner. Snack on a handful of nuts. Pour a dash of olive oil in your salad. And bite into that sinister chocolate. Now you can do all this guiltfree! All these foods help in fighting bad cholesterol. According to the American Heart Association, 'You can reduce cholesterol in your blood by eating healthy foods'. So, here we are today with our list of top 10 cholesterol fighting foods. Oats: If you change your morning meal to oats then you can do your cholesterol level a whole lot of good. Do note that two servings of oats can lower LDL cholesterol by 5.3% in only 6 weeks. Essentially, oats contain a substance called beta-glucan which absorbs bad cholesterol. Red Wine: Here's yet another reason to toast to your health. The red grapes used in the manufacturing of red wine have an important effect on cholesterol levels. Two glasses of red wine in a week can do you a whole lot of good. Salmon and fatty Fish: Full of Omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is a natural health wonder, which helps in keeping heart conditions
such as heart attacks, stroke and high cholesterol levels at bay. Fishes such as salmon, sardines and herring help in raising good cholesterol levels by 4%. Nuts: Mono-unsaturated fats (found in nuts, seeds etc.) have the lowest fatty acid molecules and are the best of the three fats, namely poly-saturated fats, saturated fats and mono-unsaturated fats. Nuts are the best way to get those required healthy fats into your body without feeling guilty. Since the fats that come from nuts are natural and are not chemically processed, this makes them heart healthy, filling, and nutritious options. Beans: Excellent for the heart, ½ a cup of beans added in our diet (in the form of any dish or soup), helps in lowering cholesterol levels by 8%. You should try black, kidney, or pinto beans; each one of them supplies about one-third of your day's fiber needs. Tea: Tea has antioxidants and less amounts of caffeine than coffee. An eight-ounce cup of coffee contains around 135 mg caffeine; tea contains only 30 to 40 mg per
cup. Tea helps in protecting your bones because of the presence of phytochemicals in them. It is also a great defense against LDL cholesterol levels. Chocolate: Chocoholics can celebrate with a healthy dose of dark chocolate as it is full of antioxidants and cholesterol-reducing properties. According to a Spanish study published in 2010 in the "Journal of Hepatology,", "the
Yoga during pregnancy helps relieve pain Many doctors and health professionals are encouraging pregnant women to do yoga, as it helps increase their strength and relieve pregnancy discomforts. This form of exercise is favoured by some of Hollywood's newest moms like January Jones, Hilary Duff and Pink. "Yoga during pregnancy helps a woman increase her strength and flexibility, even as her body goes through the dramatic changes of pregnancy," Fox News quoted Mary Barnes, director and owner at Yoga for Two in New York, as saying. The postures yoga offers
may also prepare women for childbirth and help relieve discomforts, such as back pain and swollen ankles. Apart from building strength and relieving pregnancy discomforts, it
also helps increase pain tolerance. As yoga focuses on lengthening the breath, this creates endurance, calms the mind and can increase a woman's pain threshold during labour.
antioxidants in dark chocolate reduce the damage that can occur to blood vessels, which can further threaten the health of people with cirrhosis. The dark chocolate can help prevent the blood vessels in the liver from rupturing". Medical experts suggest that munching on 100 grams of chocolate every day helps in reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular mishaps by 21 percent.
Like human beings, foods can also bring out the best in each other, nutritionally speaking. Read on to find out who should date whom for your good healthYou already know a lot about what foods are good for you. But there's more to healthy eating than just that. Sometimes, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And this especially true for some food combinations, even if they sound weird when you first hear about them. Dietician Sheela Tanna tells you how to pair food to unlock the benefits of individual ingredients. Turmeric and salmonTurmeric has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Salmon is low on carbohydrates and high on protein. When the two are combined, the properties of Omega 3 fatty acids present in salmon get a boost and it guards the nervous system against the effects of ageing. It also
Top 6 fats that lower cholesterol Often given a bad name, fats can be a good addition to anyone's daily diet. In fact, one should never, completely, cut good fats out from everyday meal plans as they are very essential for your body. While some bad fats may pose grave risk of cardiovascular diseases, others may shield your heart. An important source of essential fatty acids and concentrated energy, fats are full of fatsoluble vitamins, they assist in cooking too and also keep hunger pangs at bay. Today, Delhi-based Diet Consultant Munisha Bhanot tells us about the top 6 fats that help in lowering cholesterol. Sip red wine, instead of cocktails. Red, blue, green cocktails look tempting, but these drinks are full of calories. So, if you are health conscious, then avoid cocktails. Instead, you can sip red wine because it is full of antioxidants, which are helpful in preventing different types of cancers. And an even red wine has saponins, which help in lowering bad cholesterol LDL. But intake of red wine should be limited. The American Heart Association recommends that you limit your daily intake to two glasses (for men) or one glass (for women). Best oils for low-cholesterol cooking. All the oils and fats have some good qualities for our health. So we should not stick to one type of oil or fat for cooking. We should follow rule of rotation of oils. For example, in one month you can use sunflower oil and in the next month you can use mustard oil. Or you can even use different types of oils in your meals like one vegetable in sesame oil and another in mustard oil. The low cholesterol cooking oils are olive, canola, sesame oils and mustard oil. Good quality oil is also found in avocados and avocado oil, nuts and their oils, corn, cottonseed, and safflower oils; sunflower seeds
and sunflower oil; flaxseed and flaxseed oil; soybeans and soybean oil; tub margarine and soft spreads; and seafood. Monounsaturated fats are the healthiest fats. There are two types of cholesterol - one type of cholesterol clogs our arteries, it is known as bad cholesterol or LDL and other type helps in removing these clogs, it is known as good cholesterol or HDL. Monounsaturated fats decrease your total blood cholesterol but maintain your HDL (good) cholesterol. Monounsaturated fats, therefore, help lower the risk of heart diseases. Olive oil has 75% of monounsaturated fat. Examples of monounsaturated fats are macadamia nuts (80% of fat is monounsaturated), avocados (71%), almonds (70%), canola oil (59%), and peanuts and peanut oil (46%). Other sources are almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, natural peanut butter, pecans, pistachios, sesame oil and sesame seeds. Polyunsaturated fats may also be somewhat healthy. A polyunsaturated fat has good cholesterol but it decreases your total blood cholesterol by lowering both the LDL (bad) cholesterol and the HDL (good) cho-
lesterol. Because of this reason we should use them in moderation. The good sources of polyunsaturated fats can be found in corn oil, mayonnaise, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseed oil, hempseed, hempseed oil, soybean oil, and pistachios. Liquid plant oils should be your best bet for daily use. It is general tendency to use butter or ghee for cooking and baking. But butter and ghee are high sources of bad cholesterol or LDL. They increase risk of heart diseases by clogging your arteries. So, to prevent this we should use vegetable oils like soya oil, sesame oil, canola, olive, mustard oil etc. for cooking and baking. These oils have high level of good cholesterol HDL and lower our LDL levels. Meat fats also help in lowering cholesterol. However, it is important that one reduces the fat content of meat. There are many quick ways to reduce the fat content of meat. First, always buy lean cuts of meat. Before cooking, remove and cut the all visible fats for example remove the skin from chicken because there are fat deposits just below the skin.
A natural solution to backache
Many of us are afflicted with back pain, which we tend to ignore or pay very little attention to, during the course of a busy day. But you cannot overlook the fact that back pain can make it difficult for you to stand up, sit down or even walk around comfortably. So it's best you try some of the following natural remedies and get yourself some relief. Increase your intake of Vitamin D - A study looked at the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in 150 people with chronic musculoskeletal pain and found that 93 per cent of patients had vitamin D deficiency! So all people with persistent, non-specific musculoskeletal pain should get themselves screened for vitamin D deficiency. Indulge in some music therapy - Low cost and enjoyable, music has been found to reduce the disability, anxiety, and depression associated with
increases the level of HDL (good cholesterol) which improves heart health by keep the arteries clear of bad cholesterol. The combination is also believed to slow tumour growth by keeping the cancer cells from multiplying. Whole grains and onions Whole grains, such as maize, brown rice, barley and wheat contain iron and zinc in different quantities. The two minerals are absorbed by the human body more easily in the presence of sulphur compounds present in onions - which is also what makes you cry when you slice them. Beans and greens Beans are rich in proteins and iron. When paired with veggies rich in Vitamin C such as spinach, sprouts and potatoes, it aids weight loss. "Your body uses three times more energy to metabolise proteins than carbs and fats," says Tanna. "Vitamin C
chronic back pain. It has an immediate effect on reducing pain, although the results are not statistically significant. Try some breathing techniques - To reduce pain, try some breathing techniques that make use of the mind-body connection. These techniques integrate body awareness, breathing, movement, and meditation. The best thing about them is that they are safe, free
rich foods do not aid weight-loss directly. But they have water soluble nutrients which make them very low calorie foods. The combination of beans and veggies won't let you gain those extra kilos."Also the iron content of beans gets better absorbed in the presence of Vitamin C from vegetables.Tomato and olive oil Tomatoes contain Vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene in substantial quantities. This antioxidant lowers the risk of cataracts, osteoporosis, cancer and the effects of ageing. Olive oil, also rich in antioxidants, promotes the formation of HDL (good cholesterol) in the body. Lycopene gets better absorbed in the presence of olive oil and is highly beneficial for the heart. It purifies the blood and dissolves gallstones. The combo also boosts liver function of protein synthesis and detoxification of the
of cost and you can do them at home! Get a soothing massage The first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a backache is to get a nice massage. Massages may be effective for sub acute and chronic pain. What's more, they reduce anxiety and depression associated with chronic pain. In fact, massage therapy is the most popular therapy for low back pain during pregnancy.
body. It's believed to reduce effects of hypertension.Broccoli and mustard Broccoli is a good source of Vitamin C, antioxidants and a compound called sulforaphane. This compound exhibits anti-cancer and anti-diabetic properties. The absorption of sulforaphane is better in the presence of myrosinase, an enzyme present in mustard. The two combat bacterial infections in the urinary tract, excretory system, digestive system and the colon. Iron is part of blood cells in the body and carries oxygen from the lungs to muscles and organs. Zinc helps in healing wounds. Antioxidants and Vitamin C present in onions also facilitate the iron absorption from whole grains.Whole grains are also rich in Vitamin E which when combined with Vitamin C become beneficial for the skin.
20 Best workout snacks
If workout snacks confuse you, look no further. This is the list you've been waiting for - here are 20 best workout snacks, complete with calorie counts. Apples: Apples are to bananas what slow carbs are to quick carbs. To elaborate, they give you slow release energy and are therefore, great for long workouts or if your workout is an hour or more away. One standard issue red apple gives you approximately 60 calories. Energy gels: Carbohydrate-based snacks designed mostly for endurance events, energy gels are often used by runners, cyclists and mountaineers. These come in single snack servings and since they are meant for athletes who cover long distances, are usually high on calories for the average person. Yogurt parfait: Perfect for light to moderate workouts recovery, yogurt parfaits are just a French way of saying yogurt mixed with chopped fresh fruits. One 60 gms bowl of skimmed yogurt with one whole fruit will cost you about 100 calories. Honey or cinnamon can be great natural sweeteners at just 10-30 more calories. Energy bars: If you have no time to keep the kitchen stocked with natural workout foods, rely on energy bars. However, be weary of the fat, carb and sugar content in these snacks. The lower and non-existent these three are, the better it is. Calories differ from brand to brand. For instance a standard granola milk bar will be approxi-
mately 120 calories. Eggs and toast: Great as pre or post workout snacks, one or two eggs on toast will give you the perfect carb+protein fuel or recovery benefits. Two full eggs on one toast will give you about 220 calories. Vegetable omelet: Calorieefficient, energy-packed, and full of protein - a vegetable omelet might be just what your fitness routine is missing. Skip the egg yolks to make it even more performance-friendly. A simple omelet with a carrot and onion in with 1-2 whites will give you approximately 90 calories. Oats: A small bowl (5080gms) of quick cooking oats with fresh fruits like bananas, apples or pears, makes for a good snack worth about 250 calories. This needs to be prepared with water. Dark chocolate: A great antioxidant, dark chocolate is considered good for recovery after an especially grueling workout. Buy dark chocolate that has low to no saturated fats (esp. Tran's fats) and fewer artificial ingredients. A 100gms cube is a good enough quantity. Calorie count defers from brand to brand, so check the label before buying. Chocolate milk: Recent studies have hailed chocolate milk for its postworkout recovery inducing properties. Drink a glass (about 250ml) of chocolate flavored milk for a 150 calorie-worth post-workout snack. Smoothies: Yogurt smoothies help replenish your body after a workout
and are great for comfort. Rely on healthy skimmed yogurt and skimmed milk, fresh fruit smoothies and you'll be richer by approximately 150 calories. Protein shakes: If you get all your protein requirement (from .8 to 2gms per kilo, depending on workout intensity) from natural foods, without eating in excess of your body's daily needs, then you're golden. If not, you need a little supplementation. Remember that the trick to the right protein shake is research and expert consultation. Ask your doctor and fitness trainer for advice. One scoop will be anything between 30 to 90 calories, depending on contents. You could also look at raw eggs and dairy natural protein shakes, if so inclined. Egg whites: Eggs are quintessential fitness foods. Eat them before or after a workout and you'll be a happy fitness enthusiast. A couple of egg whites before and a couple or more after (depending on workout intensity), will serve you 40-100 calories of extreme goodness. Avocado: Infamous as being high fat fruits, avocados deserve to be let off the hook. While it's true that one whole avocado will give you 250-300 calories (except California avocados, which are smaller varieties), if your workout is heavy, these will be calories well spent. On the other hand, split it into two servings, and you've still got a great snack of about 120 calories. Almonds and walnuts: Full
of good fat richness and energy powerhouses, almonds and walnuts (about 7-12 almonds and 2-4 walnuts) can be good energy suppliers. Look to get about 200 calories from here. Dried dates stuffed with almonds/walnuts: A nice little variation for those who eat dried dates often. Simply pit the dried date, and stuff with whole almonds or walnuts, or slivers. Each almond or walnut stuffed date will give you about 30-50 calories. Dried dates: Similar to figs with respect to calorie counts (approximately 100-150 for about 4), dried dates are performance packed. Eat these if your workout calls for every bit of energy in your body and eat them just before the workout. Dried figs: A great source of iron and roughage, dried figs are old age's best kept secret. Don't wait to hit your 50s to discover this miracle food. 2-4 dried figs are worth about 100-150 calories. Apple slices topped with peanut butter: For those who're avoiding processed cereals, spread the peanut butter over a few apple slices. Extra crunch and flavour guaranteed. This will cost you no more than 120 calories (lesser if it's just 1-2 apple slices). A slice of bread with peanut butter: Peanut butter packs an extra punch with its creamy nut butter and omega goodness. Spread a spoonful on a slice of bread and you've got a great preworkout snack of about 150 calories.
