Indo-Pak to restart composite dialogue in August

New Delhi, July 28:

The stalled Indo-Pak composite dialogue process is all set to restart in August with Islamabad proposing dates for water secretary level talks — meant to address the Wullar Barrage issue — and New Delhi "actively considering it". Pakistan, in fact, has also proposed a meeting between the two foreign secretaries but, as diplomatic sources confirmed, only after talks over water and Sir Creek issues are held, said an Indian media report. The dialogue process with Pakistan was thrown off the track by the January ceasefire violations, which led to killings of both Indian and Pakistani soldiers. The water talks that were to be held in late January were the first casualty of the impasse that followed. India decided to postpone the talks saying that its water resources secretary was retiring and instead proposed that the dialogue be held in March. The postponement came days after then Pakistani commerce minister Makhdoom Fahim called off his visit to India. "There are some proposals from Pakistan for the resumption of dialogue and dates are being

worked out through diplomatic channels," TOI quoted an Indian government source as having said. Diplomatic sources said Pakistan has sent a list of dates to India for all government-level dialogues, which are to be held in Islamabad. Pakistan wants the water talks to be held in the last week of August and Sir Creek in mid-September.

It has also said that foreign secretaries could meet in October to take stock of the overall situation. It has suggested that PM Manmohan Singh could visit Pakistan around the same time to further bolster the peace process. Indian government sources said there is no questioning of not responding favourably to the proposals by Islamabad as India has already agreed to a meeting between PM Manmohan Singh and his counterpart

Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of UNGA in New York late September. Sharif's special advisor on foreign affairs Sartaz Aziz had proposed in a meeting with foreign minister Salman Khurshid that the two PMs meet in New York to fast track the CBMs and composite dialogue process. Speaking after Aziz, Khurshid had said India was looking forward to meetings between the various joint-working groups in July itself. The list of dates for talks is yet another initiative by Islamabad to put the peace process firmly back on track after the victory of Sharif in the recent general elections. Sharif maintained throughout his election campaign that he wanted to repair ties with India. While he insisted after taking over that Singh keep his long-standing promise to visit Pakistan, Sharif accommodated his counterpart's reluctance to go there by proposing that the two meet in New York for the time being. The Pakistani PM then went ahead and appointed former Pakistan foreign secretary Shaharyar Khan as his special envoy for reviving the track II dialogue process with India.

Young SPO shot dead in Sopore Srinagar, July 28: Suspected militants on Sunday shot dead a young Special Police Officer (SPO) in Sopore town of north Kashmir. Superintendent of Police Sopore, Imtiyaz Hussain Mir told KNS that the pistol borne militants fired upon the 25-year-old outside his residence at Ontoo Hamam, Chanakhan Sopore around 0950 hours. After sustaining multiple wounds, the SPO— Mudasir Ahmad Dar son of late Gulzar Ahamd Dar—was shifted to Sub-

District Hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors who attended upon him, Mir said. The SPO is survived by a widow, mother and two minor siblings, he said. Police has registered a case and investigation has been started, the SP added. Meanwhile, soon after the incident, Army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles, 189 Battalion of paramilitary CRPF reached the spot along with SOG of police and launched a manhunt to trace the attackers. However, when reports

Violent protests in Hajin Minister forced to change the route

Hajin, July 28: Police and Para-military Forces ransacked scores of houses and beat inmates to pulp after the violent protests erupted in North Kashmir’s Hajin area of Bandipora on the second consecutive day. Scores of youth appeared on roads after the news spread that Minister for Higher Education, Muhammad Akbar Lone is visiting Banayari area of Hajin. Youth resorted to heavy stone pelting

while the men in uniform went for tear gas shelling to disperse them. Agitated youth, amid pro-freedom slogans burn down tyres on roads. They fought pitched battles with the police and CRPF personnel deployed in the area. A police official on condition of anonymity told CNS that Minister for Higher Education was supposed to visit Banayari area of Hajin. “Keeping yesterday’s occurrence in mind we had decided See Protests on Pg. 7

The attack comes two days after a Sarpanch was injured when militants fired upon him at Krankshivan Colony in the town. Meanwhile, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar has condemned the killing of (SPO) Mudasir Ahmad Ontoo who was killed by unidentified gunmen at Sopore in Baramulla See SPO on Pg. 7

Addressing a public meeting today at villages Omoh in Dooru, the Minister said governments’ priority is to upgrade communication,

education and health cover in these areas and extend help to generate economy and give fillip to education and health care facilities. Srinagar, July 28: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday claimed that New Delhi was ready to talk to separatists “but the latter were reluctant to talk to them and were instead holding meeting with agencies in closed rooms.” “Our job is just to facilitate talks between center and Hurriyat and we did that. Talks on Kashmir issue had to be carried by Hurriyat people. New Delhi is ready for that but separatists are not,” Omar told KNS in an exclusive interview. “In closed rooms they (separatists) meet different people. But people like Ramjeth Malani who come without anything they talk to him. They (separatists) take tea with agency people in restaurants and five stars and hold secret talks. But they don’t want to talk with center in open,” he said and added “Center is ready for talks, but with whom they will talk. NC, PDP,

Srinagar, July 28: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Saifuddin Soz on Sunday termed the National Food Security Ordinance landmark step. Addressing a party function at Shastri Nagar in Jammu Soz said it will to ensure legal guarantee to provide adequate quantity of quality food at affordable prices to the people which would benefit more than 81 crore population in the country. Prof Soz said that after ensuring Job Guarantee to the poor people under

policies and exemplary initiatives have placed the State on the track of peace and prosperity. He affirmed that this “would be carried forward with a mission to ensure all-round development of rural as well as kandi areas.” The Minister said the initiatives taken by the government during the past over four years towards bringing accountability and transparency in the administration is worth appreciating. “The Right to See Policies on Pg. 7

Congress and BJP say we will solve the issue within constitution and they are talking with center. But those who want to solve it outside constitution (Separatists) they are not ready for talks.” Asked to comment about

separatists claims that New Delhi wasn’t serious on dialogue, Omar said, “Here lie is repeated so many times that people start thinking it is truth. Last time Prime Minister told them (separatists) that they should put their demands in shape of a memorandum. Let them

show it to the people whether they have put it before the PM. Center told them to give charter of demands on record which they didn’t.” Asked to comment on his recent statement that some elements within Hurriyat were ready to contest elections, the Chief Minister said, “What I said is some elements like Sajjad Lone are ready. He contested parliament elections in 2009 also. Others should follow. Some separatists are fielding proxies. But people know that.” Without naming Jamiat-eIslami and Syed Ali Shah Geelani, he said, “There target has always been NC. They help other parties through back channels. They give boycott call on one side and use militants to threaten people then on the other side they ask their people to vote for those parties. Omar said that they have talked about Kashmir issue See Meetings on Pg. 7

Kashmir resolution PDP's core agenda: Mufti Srinagar, July 28: Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Sunday said that settlement of Kashmir issue is the core of his party’s political agenda and they would strive hard to pursue its policies and programmes in this regard by taking all the relevant stake holders on board. Addressing a function on the 14th foundation day of the party at party’s headquarter Srinagar, Mufti said the issue of J&K can be resolved only by addressing it and any attempt at push-

ing it under the carpet was bound to fail. “My sole aim in life is to bring J&K out of uncertainty and the resultant darkness that has engulfed it for the last 65 years,” he said. Seeking a decisive mandate for his party Mufti said it would provide legitimacy to his resolution efforts. “I have no hesitation in promising a dignified solution to this vexed problem if the people repose their faith in my party,” Mufti said and added that very

MGNREG Act, this is another unique initiative of the Congress party to give legal right to the country-

men through a legislation for food at affordable prices. This will cover 75 percent of rural and 50 percent of urban population of

the country and the entire additional financial burden would be borne by the centre government. The function was organized to pay tributes to Mohan Lal Sharma on his 5th death anniversary, who served the party for a long time as President BCC Gandhi Nagar-Jammu. Prof Soz said that Congress party has the vision for the welfare and upliftment of each section of the society and for ensuring the overall progress and prosperity of the country, which has emerged as a major economy in the World. positive beginning in creating an atmosphere conducive to resolution had been made in 2003 with the watershed Vajpayee visit. He said for arriving at a resolution we have to create an internal atmosphere of trust and having an external environment of understanding between India and Pakistan is essential. “During our brief tenure we had attempted this and achieved a breakthrough. This process needs to be carried forward and the PDP would

pick up the threads again with the support of people.” Mufti claimed PDP had emerged as a credible voice of J&K and even though it hopes to receive a decisive mandate we will create an inclusive atmosphere to take very stake holder on board. “We don’t claim to have monopoly on all wisdom, popularity or representation but we will seek every body’s help in arriving at a just and practical solution of the Kashmir issue,” he said. The PDP patron said though governance is important See Mufti on Pg. 7

Mirwaiz demands immediate disbanding of VDC Srinagar, July 28: Stating that ‘communal thinking’ was attached to the institution of Village Defence Committee, chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Sunday demanded disbanding of VDC forthwith. Terming the Kishtwar gang rape incident as “shameful” and “aggression against the chastity of Kashmiri woman,” Mirwaiz said it was not the first time VDC members were found involved in criminal acts. Earlier also, he said, many VDC members have been found to have committed accesses against the com-

mon masses. In reality, Mirwaiz said a communal thinking is attached to the very foundation of VDC as an Institution. “Hence it has become very important that VDC should be disbanded to protect people from their oppression,” Mirwaiz said in a statement to KNS. He said “brutality and aggression” of VDCs against common people is not less than ‘infamous SOG.’ “So we demand these committees should be immediately disbanded,” Mirwaiz said, adding, “The accused should also be sternly punished”. within as well as outside Assembly. “As far as political issues are concerned I think no government in past might have talked about this issue so clearly.” On revocation of AFSPA, he said, “It is an issue where different people have different ideas. Should I accept defeat only after two years? Should I leave my mission? Those who have been demanding azadi for last 25 years and have failed then they should also accept defeat. In democracy everybody has his own perception. Those who don’t want AFSPA to go highlight Hyderpora like incidents. Then I quote Bandipora and Ramban incidents.” “Army has taken a tight line on AFSPA and we want dialogue on it. Was AFSPA an issue before two years? But now wherever you go people talk about it. Now it has become an issue after talked about it,” he claimed. Asked to comment on Sageer Committee report implementation, the Chief Minister said, “It is before CSC and they will see what can be implemented. It has asked for some more time. Different parties have different thinking. Coalition partners have different ideas which can be solved through talks. Political thinking is always different in coalitions.” On autonomy he said, “For autonomy there is need for a dialogue. Situation is peaceful in the state, but New Delhi is busy with elections now. Kashmir issue isn’t an election issue neither in Pakistan nor in India. If talks will happen it wont happen before elections.” Omar warned those elements who think Afzal Guru’s hanging had no impact in Kashmir. “I had warned New Delhi that it will have a long term impact in Kashmir. Situation in valley is more and less peaceful. What is happening in valley this time isn’t related with Afzal Guru. Yes it has an impact on the minds of people of Kashmir. Long term effect it will have. How it will that has to be seen. But if some one thinks that there will be no impact is wrong,” he added. On track II, he said, “Nothing has come from Nawaz Sharif government as of now. Only Mushraf had shown some relaxation on Kashmir. It is true Nawaz Sharif has taken some steps for revival of peace process but nothing has changed in Kashmir. Infiltration attempts are on rise.” Indo-Pak friendship is always in the interests of Kashmiris. Asked to comment on PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s recent statement that Omar has eroded the sanctity of the CM chair, he said, “I don’t want to react on it. I don’t take his or his daughter’s statement serious. It is Mufti who is using Raj Bhavan to grab the power. If there is one person who eroded special status of the state it is Mufti. What he did 1984 and who sent Jagmohan as governor. He begged in 2005 for CM’s chair. Will he give lecture to me? I know what he did to remain in power. He played Women’s Bill to remain in power. Rehabilitation resolution, he defeated in House to remain in power.” On Mufti allegation of police and Army highhandedness, Omar said, “Weren’t people dying in Mufti’s tenure. Just two days after he took over as CM, a mason was killed outside his house, an imam and his son were killed, cricket playing children were killed in Handwara and so on. When he sent Jagmohan as governor 50 people used to be killed in a day. His spokesman puts something in his ear and newspaper carry it.” However, the Chief Minister said, “I don’t say what is happening should happen. But it isn’t new. What was happening earlier has come down. Bandipora was the first incidents this year and we won’t allow it to happen in future. Who provoked people in Ramban has to be seen. Molvi spread rumours that Holy Quran has been desecrated which were baseless. It was that molvi who provoked people against BSF. Molvi provoked people to attack the camp,” he claimed. Omar also rejected Mufti’s claims that NC government neglected city in the last four and half years. “When he (Mufti) was CM for three years how much he spent for development of Srinagar. What system he wants to change now. They ignored whole city. I don’t need lectures from such people,” he told KNS. Terming center’s inability to take action against army men involved in Pathribal fake encounter as its weakness, he said,” CBI has found evidences against Army. If they (center) wants to win the hearts of people of Kashmir they should punish the guilty. People have lost the faith on institutions because of such issues.” “We have challaned all the incidents in the court. We have filed cases and now they are in courts. We have investigated everything. Pathribal happened in 2000 and case is still in court. I have told them (center) if they want to win back Kashmiris they have to do the justice with people,” he added. Asked about preparation of his party for next elections, the Chief Minister said, “Election is almost one and half years away. If opposition wants to tire them before elections we have no problem. When we lost elections in 2002 we were still single largest party. Candidate matters in the elections now. We have to work carefully on selecting candidates.” On reports of formation of third front he said, “It is good. It had come in 2008 also. These fronts become after elections. They fight for leader. Who will lead it is a big question,” Omar told KNS. Asked whether NC will enter into coalition with Congress before or after the elections, he said, “Farooq sahib has been authorised by the working committee to take a decision. Congress too has to take a decision. High commands of both the parties will take decision on it.” Omar ruled out possibility of assembly elections in MarchApril next year and said the polls would be held in OctoberNovember 2014. “We have working season which is summer and we will complete that. We also see who comes to power in center. We will also see what we can do at political and developmental front during that period,” he told KNS.

Mufti.........

and PDP has proved that a transparent and responsive system can make difference in the lives of people but J&K has a strong political aspect which can’t be ignored. “Though under the previous coalition lots of progress was made on political and developmental fronts but it needed a small spark to look all those efforts a waste when Ammarnath agitation engulfed the entire state,” he said.

He said PDP’s fight is not against any party or individual but it wants to establish a true and all inclusive democratic set up in the state where each citizen can live with dignity and honour. He said peoples’ power has legitimacy in any democratic set up and cannot be ignored or taken for granted for mere individual considerations. He also said that the trust deficit prevailing between valley and rest of the country was not because of the people of Kashmir but it is result of the wrong policies and shifting stands of the leaders whom people have been choosing for long. “PDP during its brief tenure acted as a bridge to minimise the gaps.” Mufti while stressing the need for peace in the valley said that there is deep urge for peace among the people and the same needs to be channelized in a proper way and PDP with the help of peoples’ mandate would strive hard to usher in a new era of peace and development in the state. He said that PDP during its rule stood with its strong principles and tried to come up to the expectations of people by fulfilling almost all promises made in the election manifesto in 2002. Joining of intellectuals, thinkers, and people from different walks of life in PDP strongly reflects the growing faith and acceptability of the party among the masses, and that is party’s biggest achievement in itself, Mufti said. Complementing the officers and officials of the state administration Mufti said it was because of their efficiency and hard work that they could get huge funding from the centre for various developmental activities. “The misgovernance, unaccountability and chaos prevailing in the state is because of inefficiency of the rulers,” he said PDP during its brief time in the government was able to streamline the work culture in the administration which gave relief to the people who had been facing tough times over the years. Taking over of Auqaf by the government was historic in nature as it paved the way for us to develop two universities at Rajouri and Awantipora which have now become epicentre of higher education and most sought after institutions in the state. Mufti said that PDP has a vision for the overall peace and development of the state and if given decisive mandate by the people would be able to change the destiny of the state. He said the PDP with the help of the large reservoir of thinkers and planners is devising a practical road map for addressing problems of unemployment and power deficit in the state. He said these issues are of prime importance to us and the youth need to be liberated from fear and unemployment and provided with dignified avenues of growth. “Human resource development, power generation and return of our assets will constitute the core of our development policy, Mufti said. Speaking on the occasion party president Mehbooba Mufti termed Srinagar as the face of J&K and alleged it had always been the victim of political exploitation by the National Conference but PDP led government took some historical steps to bring back the capital city’s lost glory. “The beautification of Indira Gandhi road four laning of bye pass, ADB funding in core infrastructure development and development of banks of Jhelum River and other major infrastructural projects helped a great deal to give the city a new face lift,” she said is a proud movement for all that PDP has become the best alternative to the people of J&K given the fact that NC has never allowed the democracy to flourish here. “They (NC) have been always misleading the people of state on emotional issues with its hollow slogans but never achieved anything substantial. Srinagar is now a district with lowest plan allocations in the entire state and in spite of having all the 8 MLAs and MP from the ruling party besides the chief minister, the capital city looked orphaned,” she said NC’s description of accession as conditional revolves round only one condition; that it should be in power. "Once out of power Kashmir for this party becomes disputed" she said.

district. Describing the killing as inhumane and said that this type of attack is against the spirit of Islam and the people who are responsible for this dastardly act should be condemned by one and all. The Minister further maintained that these types of attacks cannot weaken the democratic set up and the forces who are carrying out these types of attacks want to create an atmosphere of chaos and disrupt the peaceful environs of the state.

Mirwaiz........

at Masjid Rehmat lal Bazaar, Mirwaiz said the sad incident of Batakoot and killings of two childrens at Bemina reflects that how the human values are being violated in Kashmir. He said it was a cause of concern that molestation and suicide cases have infested the Kashmir. “The immorality and materialism have ruined the society,” he said. Mirwaiz also called upon the people to devote their major time in offering salat (prayers) and reciting the holy Quran and beseech Allah for forgiveness and pity during the ongoing sacred month of Ramadan. He said that rewards of fasting are many, but in this month they are multiplied. He said that people should show magnanimity in this holy month and help the poor and needful besides contributing in charitable activities.

which can bring such revolutionary steps like Food Security Law, MGNREGA and Right to Information which have transformed the working of the democracy in the country. According to KNS, he said that Congress party has emerged a vibrant force in all three regions of the state and there is positive change in the mindset and the mood of the people in Kashmir valley also because of the policies and programmes of the Congress led UPA government resulting into massive developmental activities in the state. He said that his perception and understanding of the situation is that Congress would emerge as the largest party in the next assembly elections. “The Congress party has always stood for equitable develop-

ment of all three regions and strengthening of democratic institutions at all levels for devolution of powers to the people for their better participation in the governance.”

to deploy police and CRPF personnel in strength. Youth came to know about his visit and they blocked the road and started pelting stones on deployed policemen,” he said adding that due to heavy stone pelting, the Minister changed his route and reached Baniyari via Sodnara village. He further said that the Minister did not listen to us when we advised him to change the route. Agitated youth uprooted the sign boards of trader Noor Mohammad Wani who is said be the close aide of Minister Mohammad Akbar Lone. Pertinently, Ministers cavalcade came under attack on Saturday when youth pelted stones on some of his vehicles. Locals alleged that police and CRPF personnel barged their entry into the houses and smashed the window panes of houses and vehicles parked in yards and on roads. “Police and Para-military troopers went on rampage in Mir Mohalla, Par Mohalla and Parray Mohalla and thrashed people there which left many injured,” one of the residents told CNS. Despite repeated attempts the Minister for Higher Education was not available for comments.

Information Act, Public Service Guarantee Act, holding of free and fair Panchayat elections were the landmark steps taken by the government in improving governance structure in the state,” he said. Highlighting the priorities under Tourism sector, the Minister said that all such areas having tourism potential would be brought on States’ tourism map for their development and creation of necessary infrastructure. Referring to the development of Dooru Constituency, the Minister enumerated several measures taken for holistic development of the area. He said besides up-gradation of infrastructure under core sectors, the varied tourism potential of the area received focused attention adding that work on several tourism projects has been already completed, while some projects would be completed this fiscal and many more projects are in pipe line including construction of Rope Way at Verinag. Mir said that in order to cater the water scarcity in the area, the construction work of 16 Water Supply Schemes have been prioritized to complete this financial year. He said due consideration is also being given to upgrade irrigat i o n , p o w e r, h e a l t h , education and road connectivity facilities in the areas. He said in this regard crores of rupees are being utilized during this fiscal and concerned Departments have been directed to complete the developmental targets well in time for the convenience of locals. The Minister called upon the people to come forward and take more and more benefits by the welfare schemes launched by the government for their economic transformation. He also asked them not to heed on the hollow sloganeering of vested interests, whose motive always remained to create wedge among the communities for their personal interests.

Junk Food and Health Hazards

M

ost of the young parents are heard of saying-our children eat everything except proper food that is rice, Dal, Chapatti, Vegetables. Instead they would love to have junk foods like chowmen, Burger, French Fries, Pizzas etc. Today their lunch boxes for school are not stuffed with rice, bread or homemade delicacies, but with maggi, pasta, potato chips and what not, at least never heard of in our childhood. Children and teenagers are craving for cold drinks and even so called energy boosters which are available in abundance without any check or accountability. Some reports say outdated cold drinks are on tremendous sale. All these habits do lead to serious health problems which right now parents may not understand. Credit also goes to media hype which helps to popularize as well as glamorize these packed junk foods in such a manner that these look to be only magic wands which can make children healthy and strong. For the sake of few bucks, national and international companies are playing with the lives of young generation. Even the mothers or women in homes are swayed by such media campaign to prepare such items at the very first demand of their kids. Moreover the role of house wife changing to working women has also added the new dimension to our lifestyle and food habits. Easy to cook, easy to eat, easy to cleanis the modern “Funda which we are learning from other cultures without hesitation. Not only this there is one more health hazard which is surfacing, speedily spreading and poisoning the health sector. In order to get good money by selling fruits out of season, fruit ripening chemicals are used to make them look ripe, attractive and lucrative for consumer to buy at the first instance. The chemicals used to ripen fruits and injections into water melons and melons can lead to mental illness, mouth ulcers, gastric irritation and even food poisoning. Even the apples grown in Kashmir are sprayed with chemicals at least ten times before they reach market for consumption. Some of the orchardists, traders and vendors use wax to shine apple. One can well imagine what nutrient values such fruits or vegetable will have as vegetables too are coloured to make them look fresh. Sometimes things are beyond repair. Same applies to the consumption of junk food. Now it is very difficult to change the taste buds of younger generation. But supplies of course can be cut if the state authorities take some concerted steps. There are provisions under food safety act. Regular checking and monitoring is the need of the hour to save our younger generation which already is under the strong grip of drug abuse. Timely steps may perhaps help to minimize the health hazards posed by the modern life style and food habits.

Development of Poultry

oultry development has been a household activity in India. However, scientific poultry production in India gained momentum during the last four decades due to concerted efforts of the Government of India through policies, focused research and the initiatives taken by the private sector. The poultry sector has emerged from entirely unorganized farming practice to commercial production system with state-of-the-art technological interventions. Poultry sector, besides providing direct or indirect employment to people, is also a potent tool for subsidiary income generation for many landless and marginal farmers. It also provides nutritional security especially to the rural poor. Poultry sector in the country has shown steady progress over the years. Currently egg production is around 66.45 billion. The poultry meat production is estimated to be around 2.5 million tonnes. The current per capita availability of eggs is around 55 eggs per year. Exports of poultry products were around Rs.457.82 crore in 2011-12 as per the report of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). Central Poultry Dev Organizations The Central Poultry Development Organisations (CPDOs) located at four regions viz. drug therapy can cut malaria infections

Malaria infections among infants can be reduced by up to 30 per cent when antimalarial drugs are given intermittently over a 12-month period, a new study has revealed.

A three-year clinical trial in Papua New Guinea showed the drug regime was effective against both Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria, the first time antimalarial

drugs have been shown to prevent infections by both species of malaria. The treatment regime, called intermittent preventive treatment (IPT), protected the infants against malaria for at least six weeks after the end of treatment, showing that it had an ongoing protective effect and did not hinder the development of natural immunity. Lead author Professor Ivo Mueller from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute’s Infection and Immunity division, said that the findings could lead to trials of IPT in other regions, including South-East Asia and South America, where malaria, particularly P.vivax, is a major health problem. IPT has been used for number of years in subSaharan Africa, where more than 80 per cent of all deaths from malaria are in children under the age of five. “Plasmodium vivax

is the main cause of clinical malaria in infants outside of Africa,” Professor Mueller said. “What this study has shown is that IPT can be useful in regions other than sub-Saharan Africa, that it can be an effective tool against P.vivax, and reaffirms that we need to effectively tailor preventive drugs to different malaria species in different regions.” IPT uses sporadic, short courses of combined antimalarial drugs to provide protection against malaria infection. “IPT is a cheap and easy way to decrease the burden of malaria in those most susceptible to clinical illness, such as young infants and pregnant women,” Professor Mueller said. As part of the clinical trial, infants aged three to 15 months were treated with a long-lasting antimalarial drug combination at three, six, nine and 12 months.

Professor Mueller said the most effective drug combination in the trial was the long-lasting antimalarials sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine and amodiaquine (SP-AQ), which act against the two most lethal species of malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. In the trial, SP-AQ treatment decreased infant infections by 35 per cent for Plasmodium falciparum and 23 per cent for Plasmodium vivax.“These are quite remarkable figures,” Professor Mueller said. “Different treatment strategies are required for different regions, depending on the dynamics of disease. The drug combination that was most effective in PNG was very different to the drugs you would use to treat malaria in Africa and also different to the drugs currently recommended for treating malaria in PNG.”

being stretched during pregnancy and the birth of the baby. Those stretched muscles may never regain their former tone, especially if a woman fails to do pelvic floor exercises. They are crucial in the six weeks after delivering a baby, if you want to avoid incontinence for the rest of your life. But pregnancy isn’t the sole cause. After the menopause, lack of oestrogen weakens the exit valve from the bladder and it may leak if pressure inside the abdomen increases (coughing and sneezing). That’s called stress incontinence. Post-menopause, the lining of the bladder may

become unduly sensitive to the presence of any urine and try to empty itself that’s irritable bladder. Either of these two conditions is made worse by obesity. Fat will compete with the bladder for space, reducing its volume and increasing its internal pressure. Firstly, a urine infection must be ruled out or treated. An examination will reveal a bladder prolapse, which can be repaired surgically. The next step is referral for a bladder X-ray, a cystogram and EMG to trace the muscular contractions in the wall and exit valve by a bladder specialist.

Self-medication is common for gastrointestinal ailments like heartburn, heaviness of the stomach, indigestion, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. People think nothing of popping antacids or antibiotics for these ailments. Some even try stronger antidiarrhoeal drugs for these symptoms without consulting a doctor. In emergency conditions, occasional use of antacids is okay, but regular use without consulting a medical practitioner is not good. Diarrhoea may be a result of a viral or bacterial

air pollution: Impact on heart health It’s a known fact that heart attacks are linked to hypertension, diabetes and smoking. Now urban India can add one more cause of concern to heart health disease, air pollution. It affects the expansion and contraction of the blood vessel as a result affecting blood pressure. According to French researchers from the Paris Cardiovascular Research Center, the high levels of main pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and soot particles adversely affect the heart. What is more unnerving is the fact that if each of the main pollutants is increased by 10 micrograms per cubic metre, you won’t know the differ-

ence in the air you are inhaling. But this heavily polluted air increases your chances of having a heart attack by 1-3 percent. According to cardiologist Dr. K.K. Aggarwal, “Particulate matter absorbs ultraviolet B waves, responsible for vitamin D. This deficiency leads to heart diseases. Exposure to high pollution level also increases chances of thrombosis (blood clot) and blockages in the heart.” There are four ways pollutants can increase your chances of cardiovascular diseases. - If your blood pressure increases, your heart rate increases and constricts blood vessels. - The number of blood clots increases as the stickiness of the blood increases. - It results in the thickening of the

foods get converted into sugar, so there is no need to eat more sugar,” said senior author Barbara Kahn MD, the George R. Minot Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and

However, there is something - albeit very little - that you can do about combating air pollution’s effects on your heart health. Dr. Aggarwal explains, “One can practice simple exercises and take some precautionary measures to avoid diseases caused by air pollution.” - Use air conditioners to filter the air during times of peak symptoms. - Close your windows at home as well as when you’re in the car. - Showering before going to bed washes allergens from your hair and skin which helps reduce contamination of the bedding. - Use saline sprays and rinses to wash off the allergens from the nasal lining after you have been outdoors. - Practice Pranayama and Jalneti to cleanse your cardiorespiratory system. infection, or of intestinal diseases like inflammatory bowel disease, parasitic infestation , food intolerance and reaction to different medicines. Different treatment strategies are required for different causes of diarrhoea. Diarrhoea caused by viral infection does not need medicine but only fluids as it resolves in a few days. However, diarrhoea caused by bacterial infections may require antibiotics. To treat diarrhoea by self-medication , a person must be able to differentiate various causes of diarrhoea on the basis of symptoms,

and this is usually not possible for someone without a medical background.

Let the infection out:

Some drugs reduce diarrhoeal frequency by reducing the speed and frequency of gut contraction, but if the diarrhoea is caused by an infection, then it may

•Eating food much more quickly than normal. •Eating food until feeling awkwardly full. •Consuming large amounts of food when not feeling hungry. •Consuming food in a separate room, or in isolation so as not to feel embarrassed by the quantity or style of eating. •A binge eater tends to feel very appalled with oneself. A deep feeling of depression or guilt lingers on after the completion of an eating spree. Here are a few tried and tested ways to avoid binge eating: •Distract yourself from the food and indulge in an activity you love. Rush for a warm water bath when you think food is overpowering you. Go for a nice chocolate pedicure session or may be light some nice scented candles in your room and play some light music rather than eating. •In other times, you might

find this a tad bit boring, but sip small amounts of water whenever you feel you are in the mood to indulge. •Always choose healthy food and drink. Ensure that something healthy is always available to you, like a glass of milk, whole grain pasta, reduced fat cheddar cheese, eggs, lean meats, fruits and vegetables. These good foods will encourage fullness by keeping you energized all throughout the day. •Trick your mind into eating something that is healthy in the middle of your binge. For example, if you start by munching on a handful of cookies, gather the strength to add a pear and nut butter in between your cookie eating act. This will switch things in your mind for a bit and will ultimately keep binge eating at bay. •In the end, have a backup plan. Binge eating is normal. We all do it sometimes. Once a binge

aggravate and also lead to complications as the infectious agent remains inside the intestines as the stools are suppressed by medication . Hence, the infection keeps multiplying inside the gut and may even penetrate the gut wall to reach other areas, leading to serious infections . Dosage and duration is important, so let the doctor decide this according to symptoms . Self-medication may even lead to resistance .

Beware of antacids:

Antacids are also used carelessly for treatment of

heartburn, heaviness and indigestion. Some of these medicines neutralise the acid produced in the gut, while others decrease acid production. These medicines may temporarily control the primary disease responsible for the symptoms, but sometimes, the primary disease might be serious - such as oesophageal cancer. Antacids may decrease the abdominal pain, but won’t cure it completely. So a thorough investigation of these should be done by a doctor to know the exact cause of the diarrhea so that the right treatment is give.

layer of fat that gets stored on the sides of the waistline. This spilling tyre of body fat can be embarrassing and tricky to get rid off, and is a very common problem area for many people's physique. Love handles also pose several health risks. People who have love handles are overweight and have excess of abdominal fat. This unhealthy combination of being overweight and excess abdominal fat make one prone to a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes. Also, blood pressure, hypertension and heart-related diseases. Here are some ways how you can get of them: Stand with your feet apart at about shoulder width. Twist and move your waist and upper body to face your left, keeping your legs intact. While twisting to the left, swing your arms to right. Next twist to your right and swing your arms to the left. Do 20 repetitions and gradually increase the number of sets. Stand straight with your legs apart at about shoulder width and the knees slightly bent. Lower your upper body sideways towards your left then slowly rise up and then do the same towards your right side. Do 20 repetitions and gradually increase the number of sets.

widely used by medical experts, health insurers and the fitness industry, may be categorising almost half of women and just over 20 per cent of men as healthy when their body-fat composition suggests they are obese, a US new study has found. The study uses a patient’s ratio of fat to lean muscle mass as the “gold standard” for detecting obesity and suggests that it could be a better bellwether of an individual’s risk for health problems. The researchers suggested that body fat would predict individuals’ health risks better than the BMI, the LA Times reported. To measure fatness, they used a costly diagnostic test called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DXA, and calculated subjects’ level of obesity based on fat-composition standards used by the

Is Binge Eating a Mental disorder?

ccording to the latest draft of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in the American Psychiatric Association (APA), binge eating is a mental disorder. Health professionals refer to this document to conclude whether an individual is suffering from a mental disorder or not. In the manual, binge eating shares place with grave medical conditions such as substance-related disorders, sleep disorders and anxiety disorders. But does this mean that if you chug cheese burgers, you are suffering from a clinical eating disorder? Let's find out... Binge eating depicts a lack of control over one’s eating habits, a feeling where one has no control over how much or how many times one is eating. The top characteristics which distinguish binge eating from normal eating are:

tabolism of the fat cell so dramatically and then, that turning on this master switch selectively in adipose tissue is beneficial to the whole body,” Kahn said. Twelve years ago, Kahn first demonstrated that fat cells are a master regulator of healthy levels of glucose and insulin in mice and require sugar to do the job. In the latest study, evidence suggests the newfound gene also may account for the protective effect of glucose uptake in human fat. German collaborators found more gene activity in people with greater insulin sensitivity, based on 123 adipose tissue samples from non-diabetic, glucose tolerant people. The fat gene activity also correlated highly with insulin sensitivity in obese, non-diabetic people, as measured in 38 fat samples by another pair of co-authors based in St. Louis. In fat cells, the newfound gene acts as a glucose sensor that converts the sugars into fatty acids, which may play a role in the powerful systemic effect. In response to rising glucose levels, the gene makes a more active version of itself.

Always be good to your stomach

Stop a weak bladder from ruling your life One in four women suffer from incontinence. It’s a nuisance and an embarrassment and yet hardly anyone talks about it Urinary incontinence is an occupational hazard for women. The aftermath of pregnancy can be quite a physical burden for some - weight gain, droopy breasts, a painful episiotomy scar and urinary incontinence. The latter is always on the horizon. One in four women get it and it’s a nuisance, an embarrassment and hardly anyone talks about it. It’s all down to damage of the pelvic floor muscles, which hold up the bladder and help to stop leakage,

Researchers have shed light on how fat cells protect the body against diabetes - the finding that may lead to a new therapeutic strategy for preventing and treating type 2 diabetes and obesity-related metabolic diseases. In the last decade, several research groups have shown that fat cells in people play a major role in controlling healthy blood sugar and insulin levels throughout the body. To do this crucial job, fat cells need a small portion of the sugars derived from food. Obesity often reduces the dedicated sugar transport molecules on fat cells, blocking the glucose from entering fat cells. As a result, the whole body becomes insulin resistant, and blood sugar rises, leading to diabetes. The new study by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) revealed why glucose is so important to fat cells. The team discovered a new version of a gene inside fat cells that responds to sugar with a powerful systemic effect. “If we change that one gene, that makes the animal more prone to or more protected from diabetes. Many

begins, it is difficult to control it, so stay away from triggers and avoid that in-between compulsive bite. If your top four weaknesses in food are pizza, ice cream, deep fried snacks and chocolates, here's how to deal with them in a healthy way: •Pizza: Go for healthy topping pizza such as healthy eggplant pizza recipe and healthy mushroom and gouda pizza recipe. •Ice cream: Who doesn’t love ice cream? Made from dairy products, artificial preservatives and white sugar, they only wreck your weight loss plans. Go for healthy probiotic varieties which are made using skimmed milk and light sugar substitutes. •Deep fried snacks: Replace deep friend evening or mid-morning deep fried snack temptations by eating roasted vegetables, roasted moong dal, roasted or boiled tangy channa, plain murmura.

The results also suggest that the BMI is a poor measure of fatness in men - but not always in a way that underestimates their obesity.

In all, 20 per cent of the study’s men shifted from normal and healthy into the obese column under the new measure. But far more frequently than was the case among women, men who were obese by the BMI standard were reclassified as normal and healthy when they were measured with the DXA. “We may be much

nation’s crisis of obesity, the researchers wrote. In an interview, Braverman derided the BMI as “the baloney mass index” and said that its widespread use was “feeding the failure” of public health policies and treatments aimed at fighting obesity. The 1,393 patients in the study were from his Manhattan practice. Efforts to get patients to shed extra pounds have produced weight loss in the short term but fatter patients in the long run as weight is regained, Braverman said. Medical interventions would be more successful if, instead of focusing on weight, they encouraged patients to shift their body composition toward lean muscle mass by recommending more exercise, more sleep.

Early cancer detection is the key

•Chocolates: Often considered healthy, too much of this deadly sin is sure to show on the luxury of your waistline. Go for dark varieties of chocolate if you want to eat one as it helps in lowering blood pressure by improving your concentration levels. Replace sweet temptations with healthy yogurt recipes, which are not only healthy but will satisfy your sweet tooth too.

If you think you are too young to be afflicted by cancer of the colon and rectum, here's some expert advice - Colon cancer can strike anyone. A check-up to detect colorectal cancer can diagnose early symptomless cancers - or even precancers when they are in highly curable stages. Here's a list of risk factorsEnvironment : The incidence of the disease is much greater in industrialized countries. Family History : The risk of developing colorectal cancer is greater if there is a history of cancer incidence in close relatives (parents, children or siblings) Age : Beginning at age 50.Preventive measures Early-detection test : Don't delay getting the screening test. Estrogen Replacement

Therapy (ERT): Women who take ERT to alleviate symptoms of menopause may have a significantly lower risk of fatal colon cancer. Take your physician's advice before getting it done. Aspirin : People taking an aspirin every other day for 20 years may cut the risk of colon cancer almost in half, according to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. However, consult a doctor before taking any medication. Exercise and Weight Control : The risk of developing colon cancer may be lower inwomen who enjoy regular physical activity and avoid obesity.Eating Habits : Research suggests that eating low-fat, high-fiber foods would help lower the chances of developing colon cancer.
