THE OLYMPIC AMSTERDAM GRAND OPENING Following a major renovation, a new area christened ‘The Olympic Amsterdam’ celebrated its grand opening last month. Retired politician Hedy d’Ancona did the honours by lighting the Olympic flame. It was she who prevented one-time plans to demolish the Olympic Stadium and got the building added to the heritage list. Now the stadium has been renovated and a whole neighbourhood has risen around it, with 500 new homes as well as cafés and restaurants. We say it’s a terrific addition!

TRY AN E-BIKE OR SPEED PEDELEC FOR TWO WEEKS From 1 January there are even more great reasons to lease an e-bike or speed pedelec for work, making this the perfect time to try e-cycling! An e-bike pilot will be launched again in March, open to employees who live ten kilometres or more from Zuidas and normally don’t commute by bike. Participants will have a chance to try out an e-bike or speed pedelec for two weeks.

ZUIDAS WELCOMES HAPPYHAPPYJOYJOY On Tuesday 28 January Happyhappyjoyjoy opened its fift h establishment here in Zuidas. For this location, the popular Asian restaurant teamed up with IQ Creative and Crowne Plaza Amsterdam-South. The result? A fun and fabulous mash-up of colours and styles that’s carried through in the varied menu. As well as a big outdoor terrace sure to make this a hot spot for drinks in summer, the restaurant also has a private dining room complete with a karaoke system!

ZUIDAS A SOURCE OF ARTISTIC INSPIRATION As a social sciences student at VU Amsterdam (1998-2002), Ineke Hofste noted developments in Zuidas with great interest on her walks from Zuid/WTC Station to the VU campus. During that time she saw structures like the ABN AMRO tower go up. Almost 20 years later, Zuidas still exerts a magnetic pull. Now a professional artist (AKI 2011), Ineke is particularly interested in the world of construction and architecture in the urban landscape and takes much of her inspiration from Zuidas. From 6 March to 29 May nine of her pieces will be exhibited by Art Angels in the WTC building.
