Avant-Garde
Avant-gardes are elite warriors who lead the troops to explore the future1.
Avant-garde art is a pursuit of ideal and a mission to reinvent culture: to revisit the past, to criticise the present, to subvert the mainstream, to guide thinking, to inspire imagination, to resist the kitsch and the superficial, and to create experiences that reflect intellectuality, humanity and diversity. Avant-garde art is of relative force of constructive revolution which pushes for social, political, and aesthetic evolution. It is neither entertainment consumption nor political propaganda, nor is it purely an artistic behaviour. It interacts with the society and influences social development. ZUNI ICOSAHEDRON’s avant-garde art looks for all boundaries in social systems and artistic value, and challenges all sorts of ideological bottom lines; through experimentations in different areas – creative theatres, installation arts, cultural exchanges and policy initiatives, exhibits a progressive and pioneering force. 2

The Avant-Garde September The season begins with the rerun of Eighteen Springs, a show featuring the storytelling form of Tanci about the prime time of our life which we have now passed and can no longer return to. This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the East Wing West Wing series, and the comedy will move back to its original small theatre space of 10 years ago and continue to give constructive commentary on Hong Kong’s politics. The Zen comedy The Kimchi Dream, an affectionate parody of The Diamond Sutra centered upon the theme of eating – its emptiness nature against eating and non-eating. Taking “Religion and Architecture” as its main theme, the 3rd “Architecture is Art Festival” will explore the different potentials of physical and spiritual space. Programmes include Oculus by Cloud Gate 2 as the opening performance; The Trial: Experimental Theatre, an experimental theatre on Chinese traditional opera presented on a stage with mirrors on four sides; A Tale of the Forbidden City, the last imaginary visit of Emperor Chongzhen to the Forbidden City; and the Siddham alphabets and World of Hua-Yen as revived once again in the third rerun of Hua-Yen Sutra 3.0. When September arrives, it brings forth the power of the avant-garde. 6

沈世鈞、許叔惠一雙好朋友遇上了顧曼楨。 曼楨和世鈞是兩情相悅的；而叔惠一顆心 向著世鈞南京公館的一位大小姐石翠芝。
Eighteen Springs is a tragedy of an ill-fated romance. Shijun and Shuhui, are good friends. Shijun works in a factory where he meets Manzhen, an innocent young woman, and they fall in love. However, Shijun’s parents had planned for him to marry wealthy Cuizhi, who instead becomes romantically attracted to Shuhui.

Manzhen’s elder sister Manlu lost her fiancé Yujin, the only man she had ever loved due to his mother’s opposition. Later, she became a nightclub hostess to support her family, and met a rich client Hongcai whom she married.

Millions of people cross paths every day, and in the vast ocean of time these seven men and women encountered each other and met their fate. Seven relationships entangled in a span of fourteen years…For young lovers, a few years might seem a lifetime, unlike middle aged people, to whom a decade felt like only a moment. As transient as images of a magic lantern, as fleeting as a shooting star is our existence on earth. Yet, we cross paths at this very spot and at this very moment in our journey of life, and our eyes meet. 故事由《金剛經》「一切有為法， 如夢幻泡影」出發。泡影如泡菜， 泡影如泡麵……泡影如泡飯……人生 如戲劇，戲劇如夢幻。 強國食品公司老闆「韓風」受佛教經典 《金剛經》啟發，推出「如夢幻泡菜」， 邀請來自上海香港台北首爾……4大4As廣 告公司構思廣告策略。 4大廣告公司創作人A、B、C、D為了 爭奪廣告合同，各出奇謀，各自構思 不同的「如夢幻泡菜」廣告策劃， 以「泡菜」談佛，在韓風中，尋找吃裡 禪機和商機，道出吃的眾生相。消費的 無常，慾望的空與虛，泡菜的長與短， 泡麵的方與便。
The story gets its inspiration from the most celebrated line in The Diamond Sutra (in Sanskrit: Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra) – “All conditioned phenomena are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow”. Be it the pickled kimchi, instant noodles, or cooked rice in hot water... Life is like a drama; a drama is like a dream, an illusion. A Mainland food company owner by the name of “Han Fang” (literally meaning Korean Wave) who has been greatly inspired by the Buddhist scripture The Diamond Sutra invites top-ranking agencies from Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei and Seoul to come up with advertising strategies to launch a new kimchi product called “The Kimchi Dream”. The four creative teams devise their own unique plans to pitch for the contract, creatively linking Buddhism and “Kimchi”. The resulting interplay of Zen and business opportunity, the universality of eating culture, the impermanence of consumption and the hollowing nature of desire all unfold in kimchi of various sizes and the convenience of instant noodles.

Architecture is Art Festival is curated by Mathias Woo, who is also the Artistic Director of the event. It is an arts festival constructed around the theme of architecture. It allows us to look at, understand and learn about architecture from the perspectives of our daily life and arts. Architecture is Art Festival is a biannual event held since 2009. It teaches us how to re-experience architecture from an artistic point of view, and shows us the different creative possibilities of architecture through a variety of art forms. 繼2011年《5 Part舞》，進念再次邀 請林懷民創立的雲門2，帶來編舞家伍 國柱的作品《斷章》，原名Oculus， 拉丁文原義是「眼睛」；或指眼狀窗孔， 也是羅馬萬神殿大圓穹頂毫無遮蓋的 圓窗口。也許編舞伍國柱是想說： 在層層束縛的生命裡，也可以看得到 天光，看得到希望。2004年《斷章》 在德國卡薩爾劇院首演，2007年雲門2 在台灣演出全版，這次為《斷章》於 香港首演。
In succession to the 5 Part Dance in 2011, Zuni Icosahedron once again invited Cloud Gate 2, founded by renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-min, to bring the masterpiece Oculus by the late genius Wu Kuo-chu. Oculus is a Latin word for eye, or eye-shaped window; it is also the circular opening on the roof of the dome of the Pantheon. Wu Kuo-chu wishes that through Oculus one can see light and hope regardless of the layers of human bondage. This work was first performed by the Staatstheater Kassel, Germany in 2004, and by Cloud Gate 2 in Taiwan in 2007. This time it will be premiered in Hong Kong by Cloud Gate 2.

About Oculus
Oculus — 萬 神 殿 穹 頂 圓 形 窗 口 。 萬 神 殿 位 於 義 大利羅馬，是古羅馬時期的宗教建築，其主體呈 圓形，頂部覆蓋著一個直徑達43.3米的穹頂，穹 頂頂部有一個直徑8.9米的圓形大洞 ( Oculus )， 是萬神廟唯一的採光點，圓形的光綫從頂部照進 建築物內，並會隨著太陽移動而改變角度，讓人 感覺神聖莊嚴。
Oculus is the circular opening on the roof of the dome of the Pantheon. Situated in Rome of Italy, the Pantheon is an ancient Roman monumental building. The main structure is cylindrical, its VSSJßMW GSZIVIH [MXL LIQMWTLIVMGEP HSQI [MXL E HMEQIXIV SJ meters, on its apex opens an Oculus of a diameter 8.9 meters as the only source of natural light for the temple. Throughout the day, the light from the oculus moves around this space in a sort of reverse sundial effect, creating a sacred atmosphere. 支持 Supported by

The Trial: Experimental Theatre draws its spatial concept from the novel The Trial by Franz Kafka. The performance sets its theatre space with four mirror walls. Danny Yung will invite emerging Kunqu opera artists from Nanjing to participate in this performance. These new talents are successors of different traditional Kunqu opera roles. In the past 40 years he has been deeply involved in multifarious fields of the arts, mainly, theatre, cartoon, film and video, visual art and installation. In 2008 with Tears of Barren Hill he garnered the Music Theatre NOW Award given by UNESCO’s International Theatre Institute. He was bestowed the Merit Cross of the Order of Merit by the Federal Republic of Germany in 2009 in recognition of his contributions towards the arts and cultural exchange between Germany and Hong Kong.

明朝末代皇帝崇禎遇上幽靈蒯祥 —— — 正是兩百多年前營造 紫禁城的蘇州香山工匠，他們邊唱邊遊，沿著京城的中軸綫， 也是王者的軸綫，從午門一路北徑走出紫禁城，爬上煤山， 俯瞰這座堂堂方正的宮城，走完了生命的最後一段路， 明朝三百年的基業就此戛然而止。崇禎在蒯祥的指引下， 重新審視這座皇城的建造意圖，感嘆物質之宮殿與精神之 家國間若即若離般的滄桑流變，完成了別家，去國，辭祖， 祭宮的最後儀式。
LI HONGLIANG as Kuai Xiang
A Tale of the Forbidden City is an original Kunqu opera performance commissioned by the “Architecture is Art Festival” in 2009. It was invited to participate in “The 5th Chinese Kunqu Opera Art Festival” in Suzhou. Chongzhen Emperor, the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty, meets the spirit of Kuai Xiang, the architect, who designed the Forbidden City Palace more than 200 years ago. They sang as they strolled along the north-south central axis upon which the Forbidden City was built. They passed through the Meridian Gate, headed north and got out of the Forbidden City. The emperor climbed up Meishan (Coal Hill) and came to the last part of his life’s journey. That was also the end of the Ming Dynasty which lasted 300 years. Under the guide of the architect, Chongzhen reviewed the intention of building the world’s largest wooden-structure palace city. He sighed upon the fleeting changes between the material palace and the spiritual concept of home and country. The emperor eventually completed the last rites of his departure from home, from country, from his ancestors and gave offering to and bade farewell to the palace.

Premiered in 2007 and rerun in Hong Kong and Taipei in 2008, the show will be staged in 2013 as Hua-Yen S ū tra 3.0 – Pu Xian’s Virtuous Actions for Awakening. The new version is based on the scripture of Hua-Yen Sūtra – The Aspiration Prayers of Samantabhadra for Virtuous Actions – with new arrangements of performance and music. Using live interactions of stage lighting, digital images, language, calligraphy, music and installation to create the Buddha’s Light – the light of enlightenment – and with monastic masters leading the Sanskrit chanting, the show brings together elements of Buddhist chanting and multimedia performance art to form a unique theatrical space for the audience to experience the moving power and endless inspiration of art and religion in the World of Hua-Yen.

郭寶崑是新加坡已故戲劇家，實踐劇場創辦人之一。身為新加坡戲劇開創先鋒，郭寶崑 40多年的戲劇創作歷程，影響新加坡戲劇界好幾代人。其代表作品包括：《棺材太大洞太 小》、《傻姑娘與怪老樹》、《老九》與《鄭和的後代》。
Playwright and theatre director Kuo Pao Kun founded The Theatre Practice in 1986 with Goh Lay Kuan. Arguably the father of Singapore Theatre, Kuo’s dedication and kindling of local theatre has influenced generations of artists and practitioners in Singapore. Some of Kuo’s best known plays include The Coffin is Too Big for the Hole, The Silly Little Girl and the Funny Old Tree, Lao Jiu and Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral.

One table. Two chairs. Four internationally acclaimed directors in search of Kuo Pao Kun. Much-loved Singapore theatre doyen Kuo Pao Kun’s influence and passion was not confined to the island he called his home, but reached far beyond our shores, touching and inspiring artists and audiences from other countries. Now, his good friend Vivien Ku (Managing Director of Novel Hall, Taiwan and producer of this show) has invited four directors from afar to gather and remember him by exploring his most popular and accessible work, Lao Jiu. Danny Yung, Li Liuyi, Lawrence Lei and Li Bao-chun embark on their own searches of Kuo Pao Kun through Lao Jiu, which tells the story of Lao Jiu (the ninth born), the only son of a family of girls who struggles between the pressure to fulfil his family’s hopes and aspirations for him and his own desire to chase his dreams. In each evening, all four directors will present their own takes, all bound by the concept of “one table, two chairs”. Join these celebrated directors as they pay tribute to the spirit and legacy of Kuo Pao Kun.

The Appreciation of Religious Music Series 香港文化中心大堂 Foyer, Hong Kong Cultural Centre
從2008年開始，進念定期在香港文化 中心大堂舉行免費演出及藝術示範， 介紹不同的表演藝術形式，提升市民 對不同演出類型的興趣和觀賞能力。 2011年推出「宗教音樂藝術賞析」系列， 讓公眾免費參與，每次以不同主題， 結合音樂教育及靈性導賞，讓觀眾從 宗教與藝術的交流中，提升藝術賞析 能力。過去主題包括《梵音妙法同悲 日劫 — 大悲咒唱誦導賞》、《焰口梵音 — 佛教的孝道》、《叩鐘偈 — 妙湛總持》、 《利樂人生的藥師如來》。 2013年進念將再接再厲，舉行「宗教音 樂藝術賞析」活動，讓公眾免費參與， 有關詳情，請密切留意公佈。
As from 2008, Zuni has been giving free performances and art demonstrations in the foyer of Hong Kong Cultural Centre with the aim of enhancing the public’s interest and appreciation of different kinds of performing arts. In 2011, the Appreciation of Religious Music Series was launched to allow free public participation in events that integrate music education and guided appreciation, each time exploring an aspect of the interplay between religion and art. Past events include Buddhist Prayers for the Tsunami Victims of Japan - the Great Compassion Mantra, Heavenly Music of Yann Kou: Buddhist Practice of Filial Piety, Awakening Music of Bell-chiming Chants, The Medicine Buddha - Bringer of Health and Joy. In 2013, Zuni will give shows in the Appreciation of Religious Music Series, again free of charge to allow more people to join. Further details coming soon.

Creativity is an attitude, a kind of knowledge, a means. Creativity is creating something out of nothing. Getting to know oneself is a good starting point of experiencing the basics of creativity because we ourselves are the source of creativity, expressing oneself begins with one’s voice, and recording one’s feelings begins with words, then come images, metaphors… “The Basics of Creativity – Youth Summer Art Camp” is a cross-media event with a number of experienced multimedia artists from Hong Kong as instructors. These instructors would lead participants to get to know themselves. The participants would learn how to think independently. 進念聯合藝術總監暨行政總裁，從事編劇、導演、監製和策劃等多方面的工作，劇場 作品逾六十齣，作品曾應邀於世界各地演出，近年作品包括《半生緣》、《萬曆十五 年》、《華嚴經》、《東宮西宮》及「多媒體建築音樂劇場」系列等。2009年策劃 「建築是藝術節」。
Co-Artistic Director cum Executive Director of Zuni Icosahedron, Woo leads a career as a scriptwriter, director, producer as well as curator, and is recognised for a portfolio of more than 60 theatre works, which have been invited to cities around the globe. His recent works include Eighteen Springs, 1587, A Year of No Significance, Hua-Yen Sūtra, East Wing West Wing and “Multimedia Architecture Significance Music Theatre” series.
畢業於香港中文大學地理系，副修音樂，現全職為電影、錄像電影、廣告及舞台演出 創作音樂，並為本地及華語流行歌手作曲、填詞、編曲及監製唱片，包括梅艷芳、楊千 嬅、彭羚、黃耀明、何韻詩、麥浚龍、林二汶、梁詠琪等。其專欄亦見於《壹周刊》， 《MilkX月刊》及《南華早報》大中華聞摘等。
Graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992, Yu Yat-yiu has been active in performing arts, working as a composer and sound designer. Yu also composes music for many Hong Kong pop singers, such as Anita Mui, Miriam Yang, Cass Pang, Anthony Wong, HOCC, Juno Mak, Eman Lam, Gigi Leung, etc. Yu also writes columns for Next Magazine, Milk X Monthly and South China Morning Post Greater China.

A graduate of journalism, Dick Wong gave up publishing to pursue a career in performing arts in the mid 90s. In 2004, commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival, he created B.O.B.* and touring in Europe and Asia. In 2010, he was laureate of Paris’ International Residence Programme at Recollets and was invited by Paris’ Cartier Foundation to present 1+1. In 2011, commissioned by the In Transit Festival, he premiered Be Me in Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
Hui graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Master degree in composition and electronic music. He is a member of the experimental electronic music group VSOP, an underground DJ, as well as a regular collaborator of local theatre group Zuni Icosahedron. Hui’s creative works have been presented at various festivals in Hong Kong and Overseas.

香港重要的獨立創作人之一，從事漫畫創作十八年，於香港，台灣，法國等地出版漫畫二 十多部。作品曾於香港各報章雜誌連載。2000年獲國際交流基金會(日本)及台灣邀請前往 當地參與展覽與及文化交流。2008年及2011年兩度獲邀參與歐洲最大型的漫畫節 — 法國 「安古蘭國際漫畫節」。
Lai is one of Hong Kong’s most important independent comic artists, and has professed in the field for 18 years. He has released a rich portfolio of more than 20 conceptual and experimental comic publications well received in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and France. His comic strips had been published in various newspapers and magazines. In the year 2000, he was invited to both Japan and Taiwan for exhibition and cultural exchange. He was twice invited to the renowned Angoulême International Comics Festival in France in 2008 and 2011.

進 念 聯 合 藝 術 總 監 榮 念 曾 應 香 港 演 藝 學 院 邀 請 ， 於 2 0 1 3 年 任首位戲劇學院D e a n ’s M a s t e r A r t i s t ，給該院校學生策 劃一 系列從創作至藝術行政、從理論至實踐的培訓項目，項目內容包括劇場元素專題講座、藝術工作者對談、創作工作坊 等；榮 念 曾 將 擔 任 該 項 目 之 藝 術 總 監 ， 而 進 念 為 駐校藝團，期間將進行一系列以「一桌二椅」為主題的創作工作坊，並 邀請來自中國、日本、泰國、印尼及香港的傳統表演藝術家、當代藝術家及藝術行政工作者擔任客席導師，以使學生獲得 具有亞洲視野，既全面又專業的學習體驗。 「一桌二椅」系列計劃是由榮念曾所策劃及發展的一個劇藝交流平台，以中國戲曲傳統中一桌二椅為創作場景，讓來自不 同 界 別 、 地 域 的 藝 術 家 進 行 創 作 和 對 話 。 自 1 9 9 7 年 開展以來，有超過1 0 0 名兩岸三地和國際間的藝術家參與，包括導演 張平、王景生、賴聲川、林兆華、李六乙、楊德昌、蔡明亮、關錦鵬等。近年，榮念曾積極將此概念進一步發展為培育 新晉的創意教育、傳統與當代的系列活動。
Danny Yung, Co-Artistic Director of Zuni was invited by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts to be their first Dean’s Master Artist of the School of Drama in 2013, to design a series of programmes for their students. These programmes cover areas from creation to arts administration, projects of theoretical to practical trainings; and include activities like seminars on theatrical elements, dialogues between artists, and creative workshops. Danny Yung would be the Artistic Director of this series of programmes, and Zuni Icosahedron would be company-in-residence. A series of workshops based on the concept of “one table, two chairs” would be held, and creative personnel of traditional performance arts, contemporary artists and arts administrators from China, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong would be invited to be guest instructors, to enable students to obtain a more comprehensive and professional learning experience with a better perspective of Asian vision. The “One Table, Two Chairs” Series is an exchange platform for theatre arts designed and developed by Danny Yung. The concept comes from the basics of traditional Chinese operas with one table and two chairs as the scene of creation; and Danny would use this platform for artists from different disciplines and regions to carry out creative activities and dialogues. Since the inception of this series in 1997, more than 100 international artists and creative personnel from across the straits have participated in related projects. These artists include directors Zhang Ping, Ong Keng Sen, Stanley Lai, Lin Zhaohua, Li Liuyi, Edward Yang, Tsai Ming Liang, Stanley Kwan and many more. In recent years, Danny has been very active in developing this concept further in numerous series of activities in creative education, traditional and contemporary arts in order to nurture new talents.

進念通識及藝術教育計劃 Zuni’s Liberal Studies & Arts-in-Education Programme 「進念通識及藝術教育計劃」是進念自 2009年起，為配合新高中學制和通識教育 的推行而推出相應的藝術教育活動，主題 涵蓋本地社會時事、公民教育，以致有關 於歷史、哲學、文化、藝術概念等。透過 專為中學團體而設的學生導賞場及工作坊， 在觀賞演出以外，即場與老師同學進行 導賞、專題分析和討論，探討社會、歷史、 文化、藝術議題，幫助青少年掌握事實、 理解現象、澄清概念，以達致培養識見， 及批判反思、獨立思考的能力。
As a response to the new needs generated under the implementation of New Senior Secondary Academic Structure and Liberal Studies, Zuni introduced its Liberal Studies and Arts-in-Education Programme in 2009. The programme covers topics from local social issues and current affairs to concepts related to history, philosophy, arts and culture; addresses and explores issues that are of social and cultural concern by employing theatre and other different art forms. Guided viewing sessions and workshops are specially arranged for secondary school students, with the aim of fostering their ability to grasp facts and to interpret an array of concepts which in turns nurtures and enhances their competence in developing personal insights as well as their independent and critical thinking skills.

文化視野 Cultural Vision
《文化視野》期刊由胡恩威主編，進念E+E出版，從香港本土文化發展 的角度出發，以全面和多層次的角度，剖析及評論香港本土不同形式的文 藝發展狀況，並以文化政策和體制角度，論述未來發展的可能。《文化 視野 02》於2013年春季出版，探討中港兩地民間文化組織的困境與發展， 研究西九文化區發展策略與本土文化的互動，並刊登英國倫敦大學學者評 價進念多媒體建築劇場 Looking For Mies 和《中國旅程》的學術論文。
Cultural Vision is a journal with Mathias Woo as the Editor in Chief,
published by E+E of Zuni Icosahedron. This journal analyses and reviews the various forms of local literary development from a comprehensive and multi-faceted point of view, as well as from a perspective of local cultural development. It also discusses the various possibilities of future cultural development from the angle of cultural policies and institutions. Cultural Vision 02 would be published in the spring of 2013, examining the plights and development of various NGO’s related to culture in Hong Kong and China; exploring the development strategy of the West Kowloon Cultural District and its interaction with local culture. In the journal there would also be critical essays by scholars from London University evaluating the multi-media architecture theatre of Looking For Mies and Journey to the East. 55

Zuni Icosahedron is a registered charitable cultural organization. In 2009 Zuni joined the Hong Kong Council of Social Service with the aim of allowing more people from different sectors of society to get in touch with the theatre and experimental arts, and raise the interest and awareness of the public in the area. Zuni Welfare Ticket Scheme was revamped in 2009, since then the number of people benefited has amounted to 40,000. We strive to create a more caring and harmonious society.
